What a great site!
We stayed here for two nights and had a great time.
Arthur the farmer was very friendly and made an effort to speak to everyone on the campsite and he was always flying about the site on his quad making sure that everyone was ok and that everyone was having a good time. Tried to pay for our pitch twice when we arrived but Arthur was more concerned with making sure that we got our tent set up and got ourselves settled and told us to come and see him before we set off. This showed a lot of trust and was just one of the many things that makes the site so wonderful.
The campsite is very basic, but it is in a beautiful location and it has a very laid back atmosphere.
When we arrived a sign was up saying that the site was full so I was expecting a cramped weekend, but the site has been laid out to make sure that everyone has plenty of room and the site never felt cramped at all.
I think the only drama we had was when a hot air balloon crash landed in the field next to us.
This campsite allows fires and some of the pitches even had stone fire pits already set up. You can buy a bag of firewood from Arthur for £2 and he will bring it to your tent for you.
The weather was amazing (but it rained on the Sunday), Arthur was very friendly and the site is in a beautiful location. 10/10
I would happily go back again and may even splash out and stay in one of the pods.

Another fantastic visit to this site. We are regular visitors and every time we have been Arthur works tirelessly to make sure the facilities are kept in immaculate condition. Theres always hot water in the very clean showers and always toilet roll (bonus!) Even though the site was fairly busy as it was bank holiday things were still kept as well as when its not so busy. We will be visitng again very soon.

Visited this site 10th may. Basic facilities but generally clean and showers nice and warm.
Lovely location about half a mile from Grizedale, 3 families camped in the centre of the large field, kids loved playing in the stream and the horseriding on site.Farmer very laid back and welcomming, he loved his quad bike and all our kids loved having a ride round in it, as did a group of lads who must have gone off to the pub.
Visited Grizedale which was very quiet but great and the pub near the site which served local beers, very nice.
Weather fantastic this weekend, 98 degrees in one of the tents. And then United won the title! Marvellous.

Visited this friendly site for two nights in March. The site has two camping parts:- 1) A large field for family tents. 2) Small pitches within a hilly wooded area.(almost a wild camp)
We really liked the look of the wooded area and was able to pitch our 4 man tent on a nice level pitch. The kids loved it here (3&7yrs) running up and down the hill through the tress, and we found it so scenic and peacefull. The kids (inc the big kids) loved being able to attempt lighting a fire, which was situated well away from the tent with lots of fire points near by.
This site is very basic but what is there is fantastic. Clean toilets, shower and washing room. The area is quite remote with no shops but this did not bother us as the wooded pitch was more than worth it. Grizedale is only a short way up the road with a large play area for kids so didn't need one on site. Would more than recommend and we will be back!

Just got back from a lovely weekend in Grizedale. Myself and partner arrived late on Friday and it was so nice to receive such a warm welcome from the owner. The Location was brilliant for us and all the facilities were fine. Some of the pitches are set on the hillside on leveled platforms which makes a nice change. There are also numberous stone circles for you to do a campfire.
We would definitely recommend this campsite and will be returning!

We only stayed at this site for 2 nights, and it rained the whole time (not the fault of the campsite obviously!). Although I thought the site was very good for the money, agreeing with all the positive comments below, it did suffer from only having 2 toilets. The farmer and wife were lovely, the fresh eggs and sausages delicious. The riding facilities were excellent. One thing I will say is that it was a treacherous path to the toilets in the rain, especially at night, and the entrance to the field completely flooded, so watch where you pitch your tent. Lovely situation although the Hawkhead Village seemed a bit too full of camping and hiking shops and not enough variation! Only cash machine in Hawkshead is in the Coop and it charges - or you can buy something and get cashback for free.
The Eagle pub is lovely, food is expensive though. The local ales are really very good.
Overall I would recommend this site to campers if a cheap, no frills site in a beautiful setting is what you're after. Careful of the rain though!

Just got back from a lovely 3 nights at this campsite, probably the best we have ever been to! Very reasonable prices and basic supplies available at the house. Ideally situated right in the centre of grizedale forest, 5 mins from Go Ape and the visitor centre. 10 minute drive from the ferry that takes you directly into Windermere and Bowness. Coniston is also a short drive away. We didn't get to try the food at the Eagle's Head pub as it was closed when we passed by, so we went to the next nearest one at Outgate, which was very good if a little overpriced and quite restaurant like rather than pub grub. We loved staying on a working farm, there were horses and cows in the field right next to us, and we loved being able to have a campfire. I agree with all the comments below except the negative ones! Lovely free, hot, electric showers and plug sockets so you can take your hairdryer if you want! I do agree that there are only two toilets and two showers but we've got to remember we are camping not staying in the ritz- if they are busy earlier you can always have a shower later on when its quieter! And the quality makes up for the quantity. Relaxed, friendly owners who just want you to enjoy yourself, a refreshing change from many campsites where there are too many rules and rip off prices! Very quiet and remote, we were woken each morning by the sound of cows mooing echoing around the valley-extraordinary! Highly recommended, we will definitely be back.

Number in our group: 7
Nights stayed: 3 – Friday 28th Sept-Monday Oct 1st.
What a great campsite!
We arrived late on a Friday afternoon, and pitched up in the lower main field as this was flatter than up on the hill. We found a spot with a picnic table and a circle of stones set out for a fire…. Which was particularly useful.
There was no overcrowding when we stayed, what the reviewer below is on about there being 100 cars on the field I’m not sure, as the farmer wont let that happen.
Good location, a few miles south of the Grizedale visitor centre, a pub 10 mins walk away, and a few miles further to Hawkshead.
Toilets and showers were in pristine condition, ok there may only be 2 showers and a urinal/toilet for men, but so what if you have to wait a minute for it to become free.
Firewood is available to buy, as are eggs/bacon etc etc.
The reason we chose this campsite is that Go-Ape is just up the road, but we will definitely be going back.
Great value for money too, £5 per person per night.
And the farmer, Arthur, is a really friendly bloke too, just what you need.

We arrived the Friday after the Bank Holiday weekend having booked 3 weeks in advance over the phone with Arthur (farmer/owner) . We camped in the main field - where the free-for-all comprised of many large groups clustered around gazebos and randomly parked cars. In the evening the camp fires made a heavy blanket of eye-watering smoke across the field. Noise was an issue for us too - the African drums were charming at 10pm, less so at midnight and at 1am enough was enough. The camping field would have been more aptly named Barter Town - rather than Bowkerstead.
The facilities are of good quality, but poor in quantity. Endless supplies of hot water are available, toilets and showers are modern and clean, but inadequate for the numbers of people on site - we counted 100 cars on the field. There are two toilets and two showers for the ladies the chaps get get one urinal, one toilet and two showers.
I can't confirm whether the local pub in Satterthwaite serve good food or not; we arrived at 8:40pm to find that they finish serving at 8:30pm. They do serve crisps and beer.
In summary - the owners needs to exercise more control over pitches and numbers. For us this is a good site spoilt by overcrowding.

Just arrived home after a fantastic weekend break at Bowkerstead Farm. Arrived Friday teatime, there was plenty of room to pitch our tent, although I would advise to book to be on the safe side. The facilities are really clean. Two showers and two loo's for girls, and one loo,two urinals and two showers for the boy's. Only had to queue for the loo once that was on Sunday morning.
When we arrived we pitched our tent and walked up to The Eagles Head pub for a drink and some food. It was lovely, the pub is quite small and it was very busy. Its only a 3min walk, and do book if you can, the tel number is in the first aid room.
On Saturday after breakfast and showers we headed up to Hawkshead. Its a lovely village, with souvenir, outdoorsy type shops and a few pubs. Worth a visit! We then went to Grizedale visitor center, bought a map of walks and headed off into the forest. It was great!
In the evening we baked potatoes in the campfire and had a BBQ. You can buy a bag of wood from the farmer and light fires in the circles of stones which are doted about the field.
We had a brilliant weekend, would highly recommend this site and will certainly be returning, there's so much to discover, it beats sat at home watching TV!
