Myself and my partner went to this site in May. We have been before around two years ago and loved it so we were eager to return. What drew us back was the stunning location, peace and quiet, and the privicy of this site and the fact that camp fires are welcomed. The facilities are basic but that did not put us off because we knew that other things made up for this. We even took our own shower this time. We also have a small dog which was welcomed. The area is well served with lovely little coves and beaches, a steam railway and corfe a nice place although busy. Worth matravers has a great little pub too.

I rang a few weeks before our visit asking if I could book and a women said you do not need to book just come on down. I told her that it was just myself my partner and my dog. To which she replied 'well as long as the dog is under control and you don't play loud music it's fine'. Ha Ha famous last words.

Everything was going fine but then on the second night in the middle of the night a very large dog started snooping around our tent and kept us awake, although it wasn't aggressive it was a pest trying to get in to find food. On the Friday the weekenders arrived. One particular group destroyed the peace and quiet by partying until 4 in the morning with loud music and singing with no sign at all of anyone from the farm intervening. When at 4 this group decided to go to bed they called 'goodnight' to anyone who was awake including me. The following Sunday night again the large dog made his presence felt around our tent and this time left one or two calling cards. On both occasions I went around the fields to look for the owner of this dog but the only people who had a dog was us. I can only presume it belonged to the farm.

Although we enjoyed ourselves and still love the place I was put off by what I had experienced and that having been told not to bring loud music and an unruly dog I had both imposed on me. It might be a good idea for the farmer and his staff to take the time to ask visitors about their stay while they are there so that they are kept well informed and to make a check late at night so that they can hear the party music for themselves. We had difficulty speaking to anyone on the farm as they were always out and about.

One the whole I still enjoyed it and will go back but this lovely space may lose visitors unless they are very noisy weekenders.

We had a brilliant weekend. The site has fabulous views and the Ridgway is a great walk. No facilities but good clean loos. We bought wood from the farmer for the bonfire. More enjoyable and peaceful than a commercial campsite.

I hear there is the Purbeck Folk Festival is being held at the farm in September. Perfect place for a small festival.

The only things I can say about this site are good things! If you like 'back to basics' style camping, then this is the place.

We went in the may bank holiday, we expected it to be full to the brim, but there was plenty of room left for a decent, if slightly sloping, pitch in which to set up.

The farmer and farmhands are very friendly, they come round on quadbikes with a trailer full of wood, so you can have a nice campfire of an evening.

We stayed for two nights, and each night it felt like there was a certain 'vibe' about the place, children ran around freely, their parents and other adults were relaxed and generally everyone was happy to be free from the stresses and strains of the modern world. This to me is what its about.

There are, however, no showers or hot water, but to be honest I think it should stay that way, as it separates discerning campers from people who want to 'find' things to moan about! If you want modern comforts, stay in a hotel!

A great campsite in a beautiful valley.

But contrary to the last few reviews I know the owner doesn't encourage music late into the night. More like tolerates some but will get up in the night and ask music to be turned down.

They're not keen on the last few reviews and mentioned them to me when I was there.

I'm pretty liberal and tolerant but I and my kids were kept awake by early hours music. It wouldn't stop me going back but it'll ruin the place if anyone thinks it's a party place.

I never thought I would like this sort of camping, but it is so lovely to go with a group of friends, kick back and enjoy the views and the simple life again. This is the first time I have stayed somewhere without a kids area. They have the whole of nature instead and they had the best of time! This really made me remember the camping I did as a child, simple family fun.

I must admit I don't think I would have enjoy it as much in the rain as the two times I have been, they have been the sunniest we had all year.

I think two nights would be my max without a shower.

A quite brilliant campsite that takes you back to the basics of camping with the most stunning views a site has to offer.

This site is definitely for the camper who likes to party and not for the camper who likes their privacy with everything neatly laid out in regimented lines and for silence after dark, there are plenty of campsites for you so please don't ruin this one.

The plus points of this campsite are endless which include no marked out pitches, campfires, plenty of space to play games and no worries about making noise well into the night, in fact it almost seemed to be encouraged by the simple, laid back nature of the owner.

The setting and surrounding area are just idyllic, and as you drive to the site you simply know it's going to be good and as soon as the van door was open, the flags, buzz and bongos from all around the site confirmed this instantly and as darkness descends and the fires are lit it becomes a quite magical place.

Toilets and facilities are basic to the extreme and can be a very long way from your pitch, which will almost certainly be on a slope, there are no hard standing or hook up pitches and water taps are rare, therefore, staying here for more than two nights could prove a real struggle. There are also no pubs or shops within a reasonable walking distance.

The sea, with a small, stony beach is a hilly, half hour walk away, but is well worth it. We were fortunate that it was the hottest weekend of the year and therefore, the sea was the warmest I can remember experiencing in this country.

Owner's comments :

"Whilst some after-dark activity is permitted, all campers are expected to be courteous and considerate of other campsite users. Behaviour that causes a nuisance or offence will not be tolerated."

Last Bank Holiday (24th May) we went to join some friends for supper and packed the tent (just in case) We go to Steeple Leaze frequently as we live in Dorset, and when we got there on the Saturday evening, despite the severe weather warning we decided to stay and ended up there for two nights, only giving up on Bank Holiday Monday morning as it was too rainy and windy to get either the fire or the gas going to make brekkie!

I am a camping novice and less than two years ago would have preferred to book into the nearest 5 star hotel rather than consider putting myself in a tent but I can honestly say, either I have had an epiphany for some strange unknown reason or Steeple Leaze provides everything for the person who 'never gets stressed' to de-stress magnificently!

Adrian, the farmer is a great guy - very easy going and YES there are many, many more pitches than the 10 mentioned at the top of the page. There are probably 5 or more fields to my knowledge and when we we there although there were loads of tents and caravans it never seems crowded.

On a practical level, Wareham is only about 10 - 15 minutes drive away if you need to refresh grocery supplies. There is also a great little Aladdins Cave of a camping shop if you need it.Places to visit are Corfe Castle, The Square and Compass Pub at Worth Matravers for homemade ale and cider, Swanage is also only around half an hour to drive.

If you are intending on walking over the ridge and down into Kimmeridge Bay,(30 minute hike) I would suggest pitching at the top of the hill in the two far fields. (To give you a head start) Although you will be on a slope here you will get the most amazing views and sun sets. I hope Adrian does not put in showers, as selfishly I think it will keep the crowds at bay! The camp fires make the whole place look so beautiful in the evenings. It is a rustic, beautiful place and as I said earlier we go back time after time. Have fun if you go

We have been back to Steeple leaze three years in a row now, and we go back about six times a year.

I love the place, relaxing, back to basics, slow your pace of life right down style camping, the night views are as amazing as the day as you can see all the fires round the site.

Word of advice, take some insect repellent, its right by the coast- a half hour sturdy walk to the sea. But you get buzzies in the early evening but if you get a fire smoking it usually does the trick.

There are no showers, but adequate facilities for the price. And we take a portable shower so not an issue, Yes take your own loo roll.

Be prepared for sleeping on a slope though for the best views.

Enjoy- I highly reccommend

Excellent campsite with the added bonus of allowing campfires.

Views are superb.

Highly recommended if you are happy to go back to basics as there are no showers.

Will be going back next year

Just spent a great bank holiday weekend at Steeple Leaze.  This was the first time I'd been to this site and it's a lovely spot with great views across the countryside.  There is loads of space (about 6 huge fields) - much more than the 10 pitches it says on this website!  I think there were about 500 people there this weekend but it didn't feel crowded at all.

The only downside was the lack of showers.  Not a single shower for probably 500 people staying - ok for a couple of nights but not for a week!  There were only 3 loos too, so always a long queue.  Building a few showers would make a significant difference to this place.

That said, it was a great place - especially as campfires are positively encouraged!  I'll be going back.
