This is the first time I have submitted a review, but I felt that I should let people know about the facilities on this campsite. Don't get me wrong the campsite it's self is in a lovely area and has beautiful views and also has the stream railway running right through the middle of the site which our children thought was great. When we arrived at the site we couldn't find the reception at all, the only signs we found were informing you that you were not to have BBQ's on the grass but no sign's for the reception at all. We finally found our friend who pointed us in the right direction towards the house informing us that the reception is actually around the back of the house no clues given though so spent most of the weekend pointing fellow campers in the direction of the house. The facilities though were something else ! The site has three camping fields and a small field at the bottom for the electric hook ups. For all of these people there was a toilet block comprising of 3 toilets and 3 showers for both the men and women ! So you can imagine what state they got in after a few people had used them, very muddy and old, and if your at all claustrophobic you wont like the toilets ! and worse of all there was ONE ! sink to wash yourself and your pots in which is disgraceful. A real same that the site is let down by this as Goathland is a beautiful place and this site is in a lovely spot.

Lovely site but wasn't impressed with unfriendly reception on arrival!
Although we'd previously booked and explained during a telephone conversation we weren't C&C club members, we were going to arrive late and we were camping, we endured a finger wagging and paid extra 'visitors fees' for the above reasons.
Would say that it's a lovely site as it's a stones throw from Heartbeat country and our 2 year old thoroughly loved seeing the steam train 'choo choo' past the site every hour or so. However, the attitude when we arrived made us feel very unwelcome.

After struggling down the very long unmade road we arrived at a very muddy field which was OK. The toilets were dirty but this may have been due to the weather. The site was very basic and was a long walk to the village along an unlit track. We intended to stay for the week but moved on after two days mainly due to the rocky road.

We really liked this site. It was very quiet, sheltered and secluded with lovely views. It also had great wildlife: we had visits from a fox and a squirrel, spent many a late evening watching bats fly over our tent and saw kingfishers on the adjacent beck. The location is great too, ideal for exploring moors and coast.
We camped in the field on the right as you enter, which had plenty of level areas for tents. Another great advantage is that it was a pleasant 15 minute stroll from either the Goathland or Mallyan Spout hotels, both of which were dog friendly and served reasonable evening meals. We can't comment re the muddiness of the tracks, as we were lucky with the weather and only had one very wet night and morning during a 10 day stay. The heavy rain didn't cause a problem and the owners have made a lot of effort to improve the tracks by putting down crushed concrete.
We were as far from the showers as you can get and they were still only about 250 metres away - hardly a major hike -and when it was wet we cheated and drove down there. Although the showers appeared basic, they worked as well as any campsite showers I've ever used - endless hot water at decent pressure and plenty of space in the cubicles to hang stuff and get dry. While they were sometimes grubby, this is no reflection on the site owners but on the campers who seem to find it necessary to wear their dirty boots right into the shower cubicles.
The owners were helpful and friendly and for £6 pp pn we thought it was very good value. We'll definitely be going back

Beware - if you have a caravan the lane to this site is very long and very very bumpy. In fact, quite unsuitable, really, it shook my 'van to bits. Layout and facilities are basic and few. Mud potential is huge. 4x4s only recommended!

May 2005 Managed to find space here after not liking the look of the site we had booked for May bank holiday. Camped in the lower (turnip) field. This gave a good deal of shelter as wind was blowing a gale. Toilet facilities basic but adequate - a bike is useful to get down to the bottom ones under the bridge. Bottom field would be very slippy if wet, particularly with a trailer.

August 2004 Have just had to move from this campsite due to mud!!! Had intentions of basing ourselves here for a week and lasted 3 days!! Had problems leaving site with vehicle as very wet!! Not the fault of the site.
Campsite very basic, with loo blocks a good 5 minute walk from main camping area down an unlit track. Toilets in the top field were always dirty and no lighting at night. Not a good site with children wanting to make friends as it seems to be more of an overnight stopover for walkers.
Lovely if you are an avid steam train enthusiast as the North Yorkshire railway runs through the site!!

oct 2003 I've been visiting Goathland and the surrounding area for many years, and stayed at this camp site for the second time. The site is in the most wonderful location next to the railway ,with well kept fields although the amineties are basic and the track to the site is a back breaker

10th July 2004 As a large party of adults we were directed to a field off the main site which suited us just fine as we had no wish to disturb families upon our return from the nearby pub and could chat into the night. Full english breakfast for £2.70 was delivered to our tents by the friendly owners who also provided a lamb curry at tea-time for £3.00 - the home-made chocolate cake was excellent for 50p. Facilities basic but clean and because of a group discount we only paid £3.50 per person per night. A lovely site with steam trains running through at intervals. We had a great stay and will be going there again.

Easter 2004 Nice scenery and next door to village/pub/steam railway, but facilities are VERY basic. Only two toilets in what looks like my garden shed, 3 more down a very muddy path!
Shower was nice and hot in the morning, but there are only 3 and they are mixed sex. Another problem was the amount of mud was horrendous even though you could see this poor guy trying to brush it away with a broom - a losing battle!
But if you don't mind going back to basics, then you'll like this site!
