I am reluctant to add a review about this site as I want to keep this gem all to myself!
New wardens are lovely- even invited us to their birthday bash at the local pub. Owners of caravans who have seasonal pitches are all friendly too and made us feel welcome- unlike some sites where you feel like you are intruding on their patch.
Woodlands walks nearby. Very scenic. Quiet. No play area. (I have 2 daughters and they loved exploring and never missed a play area). Excellent shower/toilet facilities.
A nice little find.

This is a very friendly and quiet site, an excellent base for exploring Hadrian's Wall and associated Roman remains.
Toilet & shower block very clean - plenty of hot water.
We intend to visit the area again - a weekend wasn't enough, and we would come back to this site.

This was our first time camping and I must admit we cheated a bit as our friends have a caravan on this site and fed us. But never the less we had a good time the toilets and shower block were spotless and the park kept nice and tidy. We went with 2 children aged 7 and 14 and although there was no play areas they never once said they were bored for once they had to entertain themselves without a computer or TV which they managed very well. We are now hooked on camping and now have our own cooking equipment for our next visit. If you want peace and quiet this is the site for you. Everyone on site very friendly and helped with putting our tent up.

We arrived on site wondering what we would find as the previous reviews were a little mixed. There was a small office for Reception with a very small Shop adjacent. The lady was very welcoming and at £38 for a frame tent, 2 adults, 1 car and 1 dog for 4 nights at a Bank Holiday we were well pleased. A chap on the lawn mower said that if we followed him he would show us to our pitch. They both fell in love with our Staffie. The site was well wooded with silver birch and contained lots of permanently sited touring caravans. The tent pitches were on the northern edge of the site out of the trees and in some respects a bit exposed on a windy day. It might not suit everyone but it suited us. We had clear views over open countryside, were not overlooked by the caravanners and were not under overhanging trees. The Toilet and Laundry Blocks were in the middle of the site and a distance from the tent site especially for those with kiddies. It was, however immaculately clean with about a dozen washbasins, half a dozen loos and half a dozen showers with loads of free hot water. Everyone was very friendly. There was no play area for children and ball games were banned but there was not much room between the caravans. We went in the Sun Inn at Acomb and were soon sat with the Locals and being made to feel at home. There were two other Pubs in Acomb and a Hotel on the lane to the campsite. We had such a good time in the Sun we did not try the others. In summary we feel that it is a good site but can understand not suited to everyone with children (although there were plenty of kids about when we were there). We liked being camped away from the caravans and the pitch was soft level grass. The toilets were closed for two hours everyday but they were not just clean they were polished. There were a few notices pinned around but no more or less than anywhere else. I suspect that if we were all considerate campers there would be a few less. This is Geordieland, walking distance from Hadrians Wall. If you don't enjoy it here then you probably need an Easyjet to Spain.

I just wanted to add my comments for this site. We only stayed one night but it is extremely well laid out and the people who run it are very friendly. I am fairly new to towing and they led me to the pitch and guided me in and help level the van. We drove to the Hadrian Hotel in Wall and had a fabulous bar meal. The toilets and showers are immaculate too. We will definitely return.

This is a lovely site - not at all snobbish - tents actually occupy the "high ground" on this hillside site . Only 2 statics - a lot of seasonal pitches which are well kept. Wardens and site so impressive we have actually now taken our caravan up to leave on a seasonal pitch. Really useful for breaks with our daughter and dog

Lovely retirement site. Nothing for the kids to enjoy. Lots of laminated rules to read. Wardens not the most cheerful. Toilets very clean but closed for 2 hrs every day. Ok for a one nighter but no longer.

June 2003 Agree with Mini Mansell's with comment snobbishness. Although toilets are beautifully clean, they are closed for 2 hours each day, "Read your rulebook!" Most inconvenient with young children. Even the disabled toilet is closed. Suggestions about possibility of leaving one toilet open, during cleaning time, met with, "No intention of changing anything - we've always done it this way!!!" Village pubs cosy, friendly & reasonable with family barbecue area in garden.

Strange site.. tents are not allowed by the side of Motorhomes or caravans on the site itself so if you have Children who like to sleep under canvas while you in a bed you have to go to the tent field, this means no power or lighting. site has a snobbish feel to it with statics at the top and tents a deffinate bottom place. having said all that i did like the look and its a beautiful site the pub is a litle like the slaughtered lamb *watch an american warewolf in londo to get the idea* but its quite close and the beer is fine if you like tetleys

This is a very organised site divided into several areas all called after Roman people. The tent pitches are at the furthest place from the toilet/shower block so it is a longer trek at night. The site is set in woodlands so watch out for the migdes at night. Very quiet secluded site with very good free showers. There is a very old fashioned pub 5min walk down the road which is like sitting in someones living room but very friendly.
Take a torch for the walk back or just walk along admiring the stars. No other facilities within walking distance. Bikes can be hired from reception and there is a brick B-B-Q in the tent area for use by residents. Convienent for touring the Romans sites in the area, Hadrians wall etc.
Would recommend this site
