This is a great little site with lovely views to the South Downs and no pitches are shaded so you get the sun all day wherever you are.

Pitches are well spaced on level ground. The amenities are really clean in the one toilet block which is quite a walk if you’re pitched over the far side of the site. The showers are free, hot and the push button variety. 20p for the use of hairdrier.

There are a few items of play equipment situated in the middle of one of the two fields and plenty of space for ball games. There is an additional hard standing area which is being developed.

Firepits with logs are available to hire.

There is EHU available on a lot of pitches.

On out of season weekends there is probably no need to book for a tent but they are restricted on the number of caravans they can take, so do check beforehand.

The village is a short distance away but there are no pavements on the busy road which runs alongside the campsite. Do expect some traffic (and aircraft) noise.

Staffed by friendly volunteers as it is a charity (Sussex Lantern), it is kept really well and they are still making improvements. I really hope they do well here as it is a lovely location and they are so hardworking and dedicated to their cause. Fees can be gift-aided.

My 7yo daughter wanted to go camping for February half term. When that was thwarted by a family obligation, she was keen to go for a weekend instead. There's not a huge choice of campsites which are open to tents in January and within striking distance of South London for a quick weekend. Adding to that list 16A EHU and a well heated facilities block, we found ourselves pitching in the dark at Southdown Way just as storm Gertrude was getting into her stride.

It's a big site at 26 acres, with a dozen or so hard standings and the rest grass - so soggy at this time of year that we were shown a patch of grass (not a regular pitch) by the entrance, which was the driest area to be had. Even that was pretty boggy, but my nylon deltas held despite the 50mph gusts. (My 10' T-pegs had been whipped straight out of the ground, so despite the odd stone here and there this is definitely a site for plastic pegs). Given the conditions this was an ideal pitch, being relatively sheltered and about twenty yards from the facilities block, plus we could leave the car in the nearby visitors' parking area so it didn't sink.

The facilities are superb and the lovely site managers are rather proud of them. They are cleaned seemingly constantly, warm, dry and bright with hot hot water, excellent, spacious showers and generous pot-wash sinks. The hand dryers are those Excelerate ones which are so powerful that you can make farting noises with your hands. Endless amusement. All this is wheelchair accessible. The laundry room also has a fridge, a chest freezer, a kettle, toaster and microwave. If our tent had died in the storm we could have spent a very comfortable week end in the facilities block!

Hugh and Christine, the site managers, are tremendously helpful and considerate. We'd said we planned to visit Brighton and they checked the trains were running and told us the best place to park for Hassocks station, even bringing us a list of suitable trains. On the drizzly Sunday morning Hugh came over to say that the forecast was for drier weather later on and that we were welcome to wait around for a dry pack up.

The site is conveniently located for lots of days out. There’s a BT Wifi-with-Fon hotspot, but it wasn’t doling out IP addresses. We got an impressive 30mbps with a 3 mifi however. There is some traffic noise during the day if you’re pitched near the road.

We’ll definitely be coming back - although we’ll wait till the ground has dried out a bit first.

Stayed for a single night on a fully serviced pitch with our new caravan, owners are very welcoming and made us feel at home straight away. The shower block is kept spotless and the addition of a microwave & kettle in the laundry room is very thoughtful for those under canvas if needed.

Site is near a road so there was a little noise overnight however the views of the south downs and facilities more than make up for this. Walking around the site the grass was naturally wet this time of year but is nice and flat and the pitches are spaciously set out with low hedges to break up the camping field. We look forward to returning for a longer stay.

Lastly the ability to book online is great!

Had a weekend here in early October and I really could not fault the site. It is well run with great facilities and very reasonably priced.

The fire pit hire sounds expensive when you book but it included a bag of wood and fire lighters both days so is actually quite good value.

The site is located a short walk (half a mile) from the Greyhound pub in Keymer although the road is quite busy making it a bit of an unpleasant walk for the first 300yds until a pavement starts. It is also only one and a quarter miles walking from the South Downs way.

We have just returned from our this campsite and really enjoyed our stay. The site is in a wonderful location with lovely views of the South Downs and Jack & Jill windmills. It is a spacious and flat site with plenty of space midweek although I felt it got too crowded at the weekend with several groups arriving. (Like many other sites, people had booked one space and then arrived with a large tent, pup tent, gazebo and 2 cars and wondered why it felt crowded!)

The staff there could not have been more welcoming and were constantly busy checking the site and cleaning the washrooms which made this feel so much better than other sites we have stayed in. The facilities were excellent - the ladies block had 6 large shower cubicles and 6 toilets were ideal with plenty of hot water (There was an issue with a boiler breakdown while we were there but there were tradesmen on site late in the evening to fix it)

The field we were in had play equipment in the centre and plenty of space for children to play and be seen by parents preparing meals. We all enjoyed the fire pit rental which was a wonderful change since many other sites do not like open fires. My children said this was the best camp site ever!

The location was really handy for family friendly activities - we enjoyed 2 days in Brighton and a day at Newhaven Fort which was impressive. Local shops in Hassocks included a Sainsburys Local and the Forgetful Cat which made a great lunch, cake and coffee stop.

The only improvement I would make would be to ask the site to check whether large groups are family based or a group of young people as we were located directly behind the latter type who drove us mad with their music choices and late nights! (My 5 year old came home with a new word we wish he hadn't heard!)

Overall this is an excellent site and we will definitely be returning.

We have just returned from a few days here. We opted for a full service pitch and were amazed to see other people from the next field coming to use our water tap (as well as others on service pitches). The showers etc were sufficient during the week but for the weekend at this time of year not enough. Having had cold showers and washing up on our first morning we thought it was because of the amount of weekend people. Sadly this was not the case. We each only had one good hot shower during our time there. We did not think there was much room between the pitches if you had an awning out. We foundthe bus stop in Hassocks a bit of a stretch. Our only other problem was the road noise - HORRIFIC. The staff though were extremely friendly and obliging.

Southdown Way is a great site, lots of room for children to play in safe view of their parents, wished we had had our granddaughter with us. Clean toilets and showers, plenty of hot water. Friendly helpful wardens and then sadly we were let down, we hired a fire pit it was dropped of with wood in good time. We really enjoyed it so the next day, I paid for more wood, £5 not the £12 you pay the first time. There was no wood when we arrived back, when it finally arrived, it was far too late. My friend spoke to the warden the next day, to suggest the £5 was kept as a donation, and he said that I had not paid anyway, clearly very poor customer service, made me quite sad.

We’ve just got back from our second trip to the site and it won’t be our last. The site is clean, very tidy and well maintained.

We were met by a very friendly warden who was very helpful and showed us our pitch and explained all of the site amenities.

The site is perfect for all types of holiday. If you like walking it is on the South downs way. A 15 minute walk gets you to Hassocks railway station and for £4. 90 off peak return you can get to Brighton, which is about the cost for one hour parking. The site is a great base for touring around both East and West Sussex.

Hassocks is well served with local shops, banks and take-aways, the Greyhound Pub a short walk away serves good food and some great beers.

Hope to get back to the site soon as we didn't get to do all we wanted.

Stayed here in August, warders were very friendly and helpful. Toilet block is very clean with 6 showers.

Use of fridge, freezer and microwave which was excellent.

Washing machine and dryer had a charge of £3 each which was very reasonable.

Small play area for children on the big field but apparently bringing more in for the children which would be a plus. Plenty of paly areas though for ball games etc

Really enjoyed our stay and will return

Nice, basic, quiet site. Level field. Warden was friendly. Toilets and showers were modern and clean. Showers included in the price so no scrabbling around for 20p's(but I think the hairdryers in the ladies were 20p. )

Close to the village of Keymer. We walked to The Greyhound pub - the ales and food were good.

Very close to the Southdowns Way and Jack and Jill windmills. Jill Mill still works and you can go inside at certain times - check thier website. Very interesting and we had a lovely walk to Ditchling Beacon. Look out for the dew ponds on the way.

And to top it all, it's run by a charity, the Sussex Lantern, so you're helping them by staying here!
