Very nice little site in a couple of fields down by the river. Good flat land for tents, with nice soft soil for pegging in. Other facilities: toilets and showers were both good, (shower needs 20p piece).
Even though I was camping right by the river, there were none of the midges which afflicted my night in Keld just a few miles up the road; don't know why, but it made all the difference to how much I enjoyed the stay.
The site is conveniently placed: on the main road, but also at a point where three different footpaths converged too. The location is remote though, so the road is very quiet at night so there's not a problem with any noise.
Muker village is half a mile away (by footpath or road) with a great pub and a few shops. Swaledale in general was a revelation to me: the limestone scenery (flat-bottomed valleys, spectacular white scars on the steep hillsides, abundant flora) was very picturesque and the night I spent here was one of the best in my week around the northern Dales.
Friendly welcome too: I arrived early (mid-afternoon) when the owners were out, so a neighbour told me I'd be fine just pitching up where I wanted and coming back later to find them and pay for my stay.

Usher Gap campsite was a delight! The toilets, sinks and showers, albeit antiquated, were spotless and maintained with regularity. A credit to the site owners.
Having read earlier reviews there is little more that can be added about the site and the general area, all positive. However, due to the fact the site is in close proximity to water be prepared for midges.

Lovely location but facilities inadequate for the number of campers. This site can hold upward of 100 people and one toilet for men and one for women is not enough. I had to queue for the toilet each day when there were only about 30 people on site. The washing facilities are also inadequate - two sinks used for both personal washing and for dishes. Just two showers - OK when site not full.
Lovely place but I advise taking your own toilet & washing facilities. Good beer & food reasonably priced at Farmers Arms ten minute walk away through fields.

Swaledale is ridiculously beautiful, especially in the early summer with the buttercups and wildflower hay meadows. The site is about halfway between Muker and Thwaite, a 15 minute walk either way. Both have nice little pubs, small village shop and tea rooms. The Metcalfe family still run it from the 50s and it has a lovely laidback atmosphere.
The on-site facilities consist of a gents and a ladies toilet with wash basin, two washing up sinks, two unisex showers (20p but warm and long enough), a tumble dryer (20p again) and freezers in the garage.
There are two fields either side of the farm and road. We stayed in the lower field next to the beck. There is a fence for safety but plenty of access for the kids to wade up and down all day. There is also lots of visiting wildlife to be seen all around.
The only downside is that road. Though not very busy at all the few cars do come at a fair speed. All the facilities are on the other side, or, from the other field, the beck is on the other side. It is all secure and safe but crossing can be a bit of a pain.
I felt the site was definitely worth that small downside and would certainly return.

The site is so laid back that you would think you where in paradise, it's what I call back to basics but every thing is clean and well kept.
The lady who runs it is one of a kind,we have been a few times now yet we have never got to know her name. We went on some of the best walks ever, because we went a bit later this time we actually saw a lot off birds nesting, some with chicks and even a roe deer.
Down in the village, 15min walk away is The Farmers Arms, excellent pub, excellent food, excellent owners, even the locals made us feel welcome. There is a village shop that sells the basics, we even got to hear the Muker Silver Band in the village hall. All in all a great holiday

Just spent 4 days at this lovely farm camp site in the Yorkshire Dales. The owners are extremely friendly and welcoming. The site is basic in so far as there are 1 male and 1 female toilet. There are two showers which are used for both male and female at a cost of 20 pence per normal length shower. There are also two sinks in the shower complex used for both washing up and cleaning teeth etc. Under the sinks there is a tumble dryer which takes 20 pence's. Fresh drinking water is available by the camp site entrance.
The site is split in two halves by a B road. There is a smaller camping area next to a small river and a larger field which is accessed through the farm yard. If you are in the smaller field then you will need to cross the road to reach the toilets and showers. The smaller site has very flat pitches and the larger filed there is a mixture of flat and slopping grass area. You are able to choose you're own pitch and is on a first come first served basis
For my stay I was in the larger field which provided lots of space for families to play games. The views from both sites are wonderful looking at the hills around and of course some great walks as you would expect in the Dales.
The site is extremely cheap and has in my opinion all you need. There does not seem to be any extra cost on pitch sizes for large tents but camp fees are per person basis. Also on the day of leaving there is no rush to get off the site at a particular time, some stayed all day and left late afternoon.
Muker is half a mile form the site and can be reached by walking through the fields where you can find a tea shop, The Farmers arms pub and a small shop. Going in the opposite direction is Thwaite which also has a very nice tea room and pub and seemed to be a little quieter when I was there. Had a very nice lunch in the tea room which was not expensive.
The site has no shop so planning is needed in advance for provisions. Hawes is around 6 miles away and reached across the pass which has an array of shops. Reeth is around 10 miles in the the other direction from the camp site and has a lovely village green.
I would say the only negative comment I have is that the four farm dogs which are chained in the yard can be a little noisy as people walk through the yard to the showers etc. But they are put inside after 11pm at night. As this is a working farm you can expect early activity in the morning.
I will certainly be staying here again

Just got back from a fabulous few days at Usha Gap. It's beautifully simple, clean and a warm welcome awaits.
The river next to the campsite not only gurgles and bubbles at exactly the ride speed for relaxation but it doubles up as a wonderful playground for the kids.
Views stunning, lovely off road walk to village, where they rival Devon for a cream tea. Great walks in the meadows straight from site, so really no need to be on the road at all.
All in all - unspoilt, time forgotten and idyllic

Just got back from a 2night stay on this campsite. Views was excellent really quiet and peaceful. Wensleydale cheese factory 7miles from the site.
It rained the 1st night we stay and it was freezing but we got the bbq going and put a bit of fire sticks, off it went, nice and warm.
Lady owner very nice and friendly we had a warm welcome from her. Def worth a visit even though we got lost twice!
No mobile phone signal on my network, I was using google maps on my phone it got cut off 3 times.
The toilet facilities were excellent and always clean even at night.
There's a small village pub a short walk from the campsite as well. Definitely coming back this year again. Lovely!

Just got back today sat 26 from yet another great week at usher gap, we find it a very friendly & welcoming site. The toilets & showers are basic but are very clean. The surrounding country side is to die for, fantastic walks. Great scenery, and plenty of wild life, we even had the biggest hedgehog I have ever seen in our tent twice. A short walk down the lane in the village is the farmers arms hosted by Dave& Sheila, two of the best people you could ever meet, we definitely will be going every year.

Friendly site in a beautiful location and a good base for walking breaks with a number of walks in the vicinity. Toilet facilities as mentioned by others are limited but as there were only 3 tents around when we visited this wasn't an issue.
I have to reiterate the warnings about midges - after 8.00pm it was impossible to sit outside without being thoroughly molested by them. Luckily the pub in Muker is only a short walk away so we were able to take refuge there.
