We took our folding camper to Crowden for a weekend with a teenager.
It's easy to get to off the main Woodhead Road, but the turning is quite sharp, although well signposted. We didn't struggle with our trailer, and there were bigger units on site. Traffic is notoriously bad coming off the M67, but it is just a slow queue.
We booked grass, but were moved to hardstanding because of water logging on the grass pitches, I suspect that might be a fairly common occurrence given the location. The warden was very helpful, and lent us some extra rock pegs just in case we fell short.
Its a lovely site, quite small, mostly level pitches, usual high standard of facilities I expect from the Camping and Caravanning Club. No recycling facilities unfortunately.
No phone signal or wifi, and I understand no tv signal either; we had a very peaceful weekend!
Close to both the Pennine and Transpennine Trails, it's easy to walk directly from the site, with low level walking available around the reservoirs, and more challenging higher level walks nearby.
There are pitches and arrangements for backpackers as well as bigger units.
Shops and takeaways are a short drive away.
It suffers from midges, so take your repellent!

Small but very clean and well presented. Bit in the middle of nowhere so make sure you bring everything you need and enough to last you the duration of your stay.
It wasn’t an issue to us but we couldn’t get WiFi so something to bear in mind.
We loved it here and plan to come back!:)

Lovely site, very quiet. Surprisingly so, as it is close to the road.
Good for hillwalking, straight from site.
Pitches are level and the toilet facilities are spotless and kept warm. Fantastic for this time of year.
I would recommend this site.

Lovely friendly woman who greeted us and kept checking up on everybody.
There was nice facilities like a social area to have a fire.
There was plenty of stuff to help you build your own fire safely too.

Small site for a variety of campers - safari chalets, camping pods available as well as pitches for caravans and MOHOs.
Immaculate facilities although only 2 showers for each M/F block but no one queued.
Perfect overnight stop for hikers walking the Pennine Way.
Small shop on site which has varied basic provisions. No other shops within 40 mins walk nor any pub/ cafe etc. So the site is quite remote. Glossop is about 6 miles away by car for larger town style shops Tesco, M&S simply food and petrol stations.
Walking and cycling - Pennine Way and other public footpaths/ bridleways easy to access from the site. We went on a walk which was not on marked paths following a route description and found it quite tough going and navigating was not easy. Best to keep to rights of way.
Can recommend the Longendale Trail and Trans Pennine Trail for mountain bike also Pennine Bridleway from Hadfield.
We loved this site and the location although might not have been so positive in bad weather.
Very limited mobile reception no TV reception. The site staff can hook your tv up to satellite for a quid or 3 per night. If you walk 250 yards to the road you can pick up a phone signal unless you are unlucky.
Great site for dogs and owners.
Staff are very helpful and friendly.
Crowden might not be everyone’s cup of tea but we are looking forward to going here again and exploring further as we felt that 5 days here were not enough to do everything we might have liked to.

A wonderful, well cared for site, with genuinely friendly helpful staff.
Male toilets and showers clean and warm.
Extra gender neutral shower in between make and female block ideal for families, and disabled users.
Walks straight from campsite and across the busy A road walks to reservoir.
Only drawback was heavy lorry traffic noise.
Otherwise I loved it

Lovely location in the high peaks. Sadly the reservoir below means you need to be inside early evening to avoid the midges.
The staff here make the site and experience great. They are always on the go cleaning and maintaining the site. I must say they are the best camping and caravan club staff we have ever experienced.
No phone reception, Wi-Fi or tv so they provide great value satellite connection and decoder hire.
Although some of the facilities are a little dated due to the attention to detail by the super staff you overlook this.
Great walks from the site and a pub close by.

Our second visit to this lovely site. Not too big and decent with hardstanding or grass pitches with hookup.
Facilities not available at the time, but we were self sufficient. Water, cassette emptying and waste bins all in one nicely arranged area. Check in very straightforward.
Great area for strolling on Logdendale trail or hiking in the Pennine hills. Beware crossing the A628, a fast and twisting road.
Parking in nearby Tintwistle/Hadfield hard to find, as was a decent supermarket, though I'm told Mottram has a big Tesco. Perfect for a short break.

No car walking in and out
Stayed here part of pennine way walk. There are a number of small huts with heating for rent.
Wash rooms modern and clean. Laundry with washer and dryer change available at office reasonable price. Plenty hot water in showers Small essentials shop on site.
Phone signal 02 and Vodaphone not any others. Two chaps Graham and Roy run this site really friendly and helpful.
Be aware if walking The Bull Heads is some distance away walking and very dangerous if you walk along main road. Cabs seem reluctant to come out to campsite JRS cabs did come out.
Excellent site nice and quite. There are NO buses. Only bus stop is National Express which has to booked by phone or internet no signal remember.
