Please note we have been advised that this campsite has closed, and no longer offers camping, motorhome or caravanning pitches although the pub itself is still open. If you know that this situation has changed in the future, please could you let us know. Many thanks

I have mixed views of this site. The owners and the staff in the pub are lovely and very helpful. The food in the pub was good and value for money.
The fact it is near to a main road didn't really bother us. The field we were in had a big gate so our toddler was safe. The grass could have done with a cut, it was a good job we took James waterproofs and wellies with us as the grass was over him knees. There were a few animals to keep him entertained cows, sheep, horse and a dog.
The thing that let the site down is the toilets and showers. There are 2 of them and the showers and toilet are in the same wet room, which never seemed to be dry. They also could be which a more regular clean. Apart from that we had a lovely time (not sure the other campers did as James was crying at 4am).

Two nights on this C&CC Certificated Site midweek. The five hardstanding were full the first night and one tent in the field. Two motorhomes left on second night.
The site was as described but it did not seem to be a priority for the owners. We were told to pitch anywhere and had to look round ourselves for the facilities. Not a problem to us but others may need assistance. The grass had not been cut and gave an unkempt appearance.
The pot washing facilities are still not under cover. The showers were clean but wet floors did make them not very pleasant if you just needed the loo and there was no mop or squeegee to dry it.
The Chemical Disposal point used as we left was bunged up with toilet wipes so not a very pleasant experience.
The hotel only has three rooms and I am sure the owners would not treat those the same. However, having used our own caravan facilities it didn't cause any problem for us. A good dog walk adjacent to site.

Just returned from two glorious days at the Waterloo hotel. Fabulous small site just at the back of the pub fabulous views. Really lovely pub serving good home cooked food at reasonable prices.
There are just five hardstanding pitches all with 16 amp hook ups. Just below the caravan field is a spacious field for tents. The showers and toilets very clean. Lovely beer garden to sit in and enjoy a drink. The site is on the A6 but traffic noise was not a problem at all. The Waterloo is well situated for all the main attractions in the area

We booked the function room for my wife's 40th. We managed to fill most of the campsite. The owners and staff did a grand job of feeding us all. We had a baked potato/chilli buffet thing going on which worked well. We took their recommendation of having a local DJ and his disco. Top class.
During the day we walked through the stunning Cheedale Gorge, which is within walking distance.
The facilities at the site were perfectly adequate. Overall I'd say that we were well looked after and us and our friends enjoyed the Waterloo Hotel Experience.

Just returned from 2 nights at the Waterloo, lovely basic clean site close to the start of the Monsal trail which is the reason we chose it. The site is relatively flat and a good size, no tents are pitched too close, lovely atmosphere to the place. The owners couldn't do enough to help, putting an extension on the electric so we could have a hook up further up the field. No noise from other campers even though one party had a birthday celebration they didn't disturb anyone else and kept the noise to a minimum ending it at a reasonable time. The site is very exposed and the only downside is the proximity to the road (very busy A6) with earplugs in at night this didn't prove too bad. All in all a good site, well situated, clean and friendly would return.

Just got back today from this site and have to say I have mixed feelings ! The site was ok but in need of some tlc, as wash area was full of bits off of the surrounding trees which blocked the sink. Not being undercover didn't help. Toilet areas and showers were ok. Pub is nice and the staff are very friendly. Rubble behind pub gives it a unkept look. Field we were on was ok not the best but the views are to die for. BUT what really peed me off about this weekend was the car rally that turned up at Saturday night and continued to do so all night, with lights forever lighting up our tent from 11pm and car engines being revved all through the night. We finally gave up at 3.30am when this was still happening, got up had a drink and packed up about 4.30am when light. To top this off when we were packing they decided to move cars onto the field next to our tent ! So if you decide to give this a go, please check before going if they are having a car rally !

We have just returned from a four night stay at The Waterloo Hotel. We chose this site after reading reviews from others.
The site is great with room for 5-6 caravans and a large camping field that you could put a caravan on if you did not need electric hook up. The showers and toilets were spotless and the superb hot showers are free.
From what I understand is that the current tenant of the hotel only took over at the back end of 2010. There seems to be many new items that must have been put in since he took over, the latest is a pot wash area for the campers that is in the process of being formed.
It will have hot and cold water to a large stainless steel sink with pot draining areas, all will be under a lean too cover. I would say that this will be up and running in the next couple of weeks.
There are a good selection of beers and lagers in the pub with a very friendly atmosphere. The meals are all freshly made using local ingredients and are superb. We had two wonderful meals last night after having a fabulous breakfast earlier in the day before settling down to watch the wedding.
Will we be back? you betcha. The area is beautiful with loads too see. If you are a walker or cyclist you would be in your element.
There is one small down side, there are no play facilities for small children.

We have just spent three nights on this delightful site and enjoyed it considerably.
At first we thought it was miles from anywhere but the walks around this area are fantastic, particularly along the river in the nearby gorge and Bakewell and Buxton are not far in the car.
The site has two showers and toilets which were quite new and clean and there was lots of hot water. I'm not sure that this was really enough as it was quite busy over this weekend.
The showers and toilets are in the same room too, which makes it awkward for those just waiting to use the toilet. The pub itself is great with a very welcoming landlord.
We would definitely use this site again.

Dont camp here if you have young children or babies!
After reading the fantastic reviews on this website we decided to book this place in January for the Bank holiday. When I booked I asked if this was a family friendly site as I had a young baby as well as a young toddler staying with us. The Landlady admitted that there wasn't really any facilities but to come anyway and she was sure something could be done to ensure our children could get washed.
When we turned up to the site I could not contain my horror. After eventually finding someone to help us to pitch up, I found that we were situated directly behind the pub, which seemed to be on the small grass area beside the car park!
There were three plots with concrete beds here and by the following day a motorhome and a tourer ACTUALLY parked on the concrete road and adjacent to us was large field for tents. The washing up facility consisted of a sink fixed to an outside wall with no cover or protection from the wind, 3 toilets with showers contained which seemed of a decent size but the toilets repeatedly misfunctioned (so one can imagine the queues in the mornings and evenings)and there were NO facilities for children at all.
I sent my husband round to see if the kids could get bathed and was rebuffed by the landlord so then I took it into my hands to have words with the landlady. After a very cold affront she decided we could borrow one of the guest rooms that they rent above the pub to let them bathe. I was duly informed that the landlord was going to Buxton to get a baby changer the following day but that didn't arrive (despite having 5 months' notice that we needed these facilities), and so had to use b&b their facilities again.
There was constant disturbances every evening from 6. 30 to around 9pm with their son driving his off-road motorbike up and down the road where we were all stationed. Having young children and trying to get them to bed with this noise really wasn't easy.
I cannot comment on the public house.
As you can imagine, I would not recommend this site to anyone.
