We chose Carlton Park for a 4 night camping weekend as it's pretty close to the Suffolk coast.
There are 2 fields. 1 for Caravans/Statics and the camping field next door. The camping field is only slightly sloped but has flat pitches which are large, leaving plenty of space for other tents.
We were actually the only tent for the weekend and had a lovely pitch next to the old Oak Tree (with resident crows) The grass on the site is well looked after and was cut short. It's quite a pretty site with the sports facilities nearby and there was a cricket match on the Sunday we were there.
As previously mentioned the toilets and showers aren't the most modern, but were clean and there was plenty of hot water. There's also decent washing up facilities along with (paid) washing machines and a freezer for ice-packs.
Saxmundham itself is lovely with a new(ish) Tesco & Waitrose & the town has a fantastic fish & chip shop (The Trawlers Catch) perhaps a 10 min walk away. But easy to drive to.
The site manager is very helpful and friendly so no worries there if you have any issues. Which of course we didn't. He obviously takes pride in his site :-)
There's a good play area for children and plenty of local walks nearby.
We chose to stay here as the site is near RSPB Minsmere & the lovely coastal towns of Aldeburgh & Southwold.
So, in conclusion. A pretty site, well looked after and clean, slightly dated showers/toilets, but this is camping. And I certainly had no cause for complaint.
Would I come back here again? An absolute YES!
I'd certainly have no hesitation in recommending Carlton Park to anyone.

Loved this site and will return we found the site to be informal and relaxing with plenty of open space for ball games and no set in stone rules.
Split into two sections one field for the seasonals and the other for the visitors.
Both tents and vans pitched and it did not feel crowded the pitches are slightly sloping some a little so more than others, the grass was cut short and the cuttings collected, hedges surround the field and we did not hear any noise from the road.
The facilities are in the seasonal field buildings look a bit unkept from the outside and they are not the most modern but are plentiful and very clean, with separate family and disabled shower/toilet rooms as well. We did not use the washing up or laundry rooms.
The site is a part of the sports club so there are tennis courts available to hire for a reasonable fee.
The sports field behind hedging is available to use and is the local football teams home ground we did not find the saturday game a problem and walked up to watch.
The play park is excellent with plenty of slides and swings and benches and shade to sit a watch the kids play, it is a public playground and is situated across from the football pitch.
There is no shop on site and with a easy walk into saxmundam taking around 10/15 mins with a path all the way it is not needed anyway. Tesco, waitrose, pubs and the usual take aways are easy to find.

I stayed here for our family holiday and had a great time.
Toilet block was always clean although had to wait for showers on numerous occasions. Did find it slightly strange that the block was situated in the caravan field. Also they close from 11 till 12. Having to leave your pitch by 12 and having small children to prepare for a long journey home this was inconvenient!
The sports club actually has a bar and is open at the weekends was very noisy and slightly annoying that we could go!
The children's park was the best 1 we have ever been to, the photos on here are very old and do not do it justice.
The pub that was recommended to us was a very long walk away but great little place for food and drink although didn't serve food till 7pm so not practical for kiddies really!
Saxmundon itself seems to have everything needed. Its a 15min walk away but has good fish n chips and a great Indian restaurant for food and Tesco and Waitrose for shopping.
They do charge for children as well which I wasn't expecting as all other site we've stayed at you pay pitch fee then per adult, so worked out expensive for so few amenities
There was a few large groups but overall a very peaceful and relaxing time was had by all!

Good campsite within easy walking distance of Saxmundham which is a nice little town with a couple of Supermarkets, plenty of pubs and a great fish and chips shop.
Big spacious camping field, right next to a sports club, so plenty of room for football, cricket etc. Saxmundham FC actually play on the football pitch so the weekend we were there we actually sat and watched a game.
The washblock is the sports club changing rooms, so plenty of room and always clean with plenty of hot water.
No on-site shop, but site warden is very friendly and helpful.

An absolutely superb site, quiet, clean, spacious and the wardens were really friendly with no pressure to pay or be off the site at a certain time.
The location is perfect for site seeing, walking or just relaxing on the site. Saxmundam is only a five minute walk away and has every amenity you could want, Pub, Supermarket, Shops, Takeaway, Restaurants, Parking.
There is a massive playing field which was a perfect run for the dogs. Booked to return later in the year.

I have just spent a week at Carlton Park in our new Vermont XL with friends. The camp has loads of room on the pitches and room in front for kids to play ball games, run around and let off steam all within your view.
There are also huge playing fields for them to run around with kites and then a great adventure playground a two minute walk through the fields. Too far to let little ones go on their own but great for a family trip before dinner.
The electric hook ups are only 10amp and we had to share ours and unfortunately that meant that we kept having power cuts every time we turned on a kettle and also our new camping fridge would not work.
The toilets and showers are part of the sports club changing rooms and are clean but they are how you would expect a 1980's sports club to look like and could do with some updating.
Although they were cleaned I think more could have been done and more often to make them a bit better. There are two single showers in the womens toilet and then you can go through to the group shower rooms one that has two showers in it and another with three, so if you have children it is great as you can all shower at the same time.
There is no shop but the main street of Saxmundham is a 5 min drive away with a Waitrose in it amongst some other shops.
We stayed on pitches 67 & 68 which were right in the corner and would definitely have those again but they are the furthest away from the toilets.
Aldeburgh is a short drive away as is Dunwich beach. Southwold is not far either and worth a visit.

Visited Carlton Park on our first camping trip for 4 nights, and don't think we could've picked a better start to start out with!
I'll try and keep it brief :) This is a lovely quiet site. Visitors in one field and caravans in another near the shower block. To the rear of the site is a cricket/football/running club with a small pavillion and a huge field area open to all.
The tent area is backed by fields, with a very pretty little church. Did hear the odd train in the evening when all was quite, but not loud enough to keep us awake. The pitches were nice and big - thought we would be crammed in with the neighbours in our Maritsa 600! Plenty of space in between pitches for sitting out and the little one to practise her first steps!
Toilet, showers and washing up facilities were basic, but clean and well looked after. Never ran out of tissue and the water was steaming hot! Worth taking a wander out of the corridor because we found a disabled toilet with 2 shower heads and a family bathroom with 3 shower heads - very useful for taking the children and not worrying they are about to whip open the curtain/door on you!
The playground is well worth a visit! It is in really good condition, very well looked after! It has a climbing frame, 3 slides (one is built into a hill and kind of zig zags back down) a zipwire, lots of see-saw, bouncy things and is enclosed in a big crater so sheltered from the wind. Too far for little ones to walk alone though, as you have to walk past the shower block, and over the cricket pitch and field to get to it. Kept my 1 and 5 year olds happy for hours!
There is a Waitrose just down the road, plenty of people were seen walking back with bags of shopping. The town of Saxmundham itself seems busy, but not really a lot there for us as a family. We went out most days, exploring Southwold, Aldeburgh, Pakefield, Thorpeness and Orford, as well as a nice little trip to Easton Farm Park.
We will be coming back again

We found this to be an excellent site. Good value, clean, spacious pitches and friendly.
Tennis good value, play park excellent (although it is a public play park. ) John was helpful and communication was good prior to stay. Facilities were never overstretched, lots of space to play.
Well placed for the area (aldeburgh, snape, thorpeness, framlingham, southwold, walberswick, orford etc. )There is a waitrose in saxmundham and some nice little shops.
Would definitely stay again and recommend highly.

Spent 4 nights at this site with friends. We were 3 families and were given ample space to set up our tents.
John the site manager is very helpful and can be seen throughout the day on site.
There were lot's of children on site so various ball games going on, none of the children were any bother.
It was a bit noisy the first night as there was a large in the bottom corner of the field, but the second night we invested in some earplugs, never heard a thing after that - nice!
The campsite is nice and clean. The showers are adequate and have plenty of hot water, although only having 2 in the ladies could be a problem if the site is full, saying that I never had to wait.
The washing-up room is clean & tiday and the freezer for ice packs is useful.
Saxmundham itself is OK and has a nice size Waitrose for the essentials milk etc.
We had a lovely trip into Southwold, a walk along the old fashioned pier is a must.
We also had a trip to Easton farm which is a bout 25 minutes away, that was a lovely day out for the kids. We had lunch there and the food was very reasonably priced and I highly recommend the home made cakes.
Suffolk is a lovely place to visit.

This was my second visit to Carlton Park. First time, a couple of years ago, it was just myself, wife and two kids. This we brought some friends and their families with 4 tents between us, and for two families it was their first time camping.
This site is ideally located for exploring the east of Suffolk, only being 20 minutes from Southwold (Adnams Brewery) and Aldeburgh on the coast within easy reach. Facilities, although basic, are good.
Being in and around a sports pavilion they have a plentiful supply of hot water. There are also family showers and I have never had to queue to use the facilities.
There is no shop or bar on site, but the town of Saxmundham is an half mile stroll away with a supermarket and a handful of pubs, restuarants and take aways.
For kids there is a large playing field adjacent to the touring field with plenty of room for ball games and kite flying. There is also an extremely well appointed adventure playground across the playing field, but it is a fair distance from the touring field so it isn't advisable to let really small children go off on their own.
In summary I thoroughly like this campsite and I will definitely be returning.
