A good functional site.
The visitors field was nice and spacious, pitches were a nice size. Toilet blocks and washing up area were fine and had an entry code on the door which the kids thought was great and meant they wanted to do the washing up all weekend!
Gentleman popped round to collect money, very casual laid back feel to it which was nice.
The playground is quite away from the park but had a lot for the kids to do there, also in a dip so bit sheltered from the wind (weather horrible when we went!).
Saxhumndham town has supermarket, pubs, take always etc and is a 15 min walk or short car trip away. Southwold beach nice and has everything you could want with kids. Would revisit site again.

Just returned from a group camping trip to Carlton Park. We had a fantastic time! There were 17 adults and 15 children between us and to be honest we initially picked the site as it was one of a handful that allowed group bookings.
The pitches were nicely spaced out and the facilities although basic were clean and plentiful.
The toilets were quite a walk from the visitor pitches for the little ones in the tents though so we would ask to be closer next time. We didn't use the local shops as had everything we needed, some of the group did and seemed happy with what they found.
Overall we would recommend the site and are already looking to book a return visit.
Excellent playpark at far end of playing field, the adults had lots of fun too!

We have just spent a week at Carlton Park and it does everything a campsite should do and very well. Whilst amenities are basic they are well managed and the facilities are more than adequate.
The site is split between two fields, one is for permanently pitched touring caravans the other for visitors.
The site is also home to Saxmundham Recreation and Sports club so the toilet facilities are also shared with the football and cricket teams. Not a problem as there were no games on, but the real bonus is the showers are built for the teams to change in. The 'family' showers are actually shower rooms for home and away teams so are absolutely huge - five showers and a toilet in the room I used every morning. You just need to explore the whole shower block as the first male toilet only has two toilets and two showers. Follow the signs for the larger showers.
Tennis courts and crown green bowling is available on site through the sports clubs, make enquiries before to see if general public access can be arranged.
Washing up facilities are in a large timber building which also houses a washing machine, spinner and tumble dryer. Washing was £2-3 a load depending on programme, dryer was 20p for 10 minutes. Large freezer for ice blocks.
Children's playground is large with plenty of equipment, none of it damaged which makes a change! Large field for football, kiteflying etc.
We arrived and a pitch had been reserved, but we had been told we could pitch anywhere where there was no reserved sign so we moved to be nearer the toilets. Site wasn't busy - no more than 15 tents during the whole week with plenty of space for a large tent and the car.
Site manager did his rounds at least once a day on his bike. Had a chat, explained where things were and took the money - in our case just £100 for the week for a non EHU pitch.
Site is located half a mile from the centre of Saxmundham which wouldn't be in the top ten of Suffolk small towns but it does have everything you need. You can walk along the main road, or there is a footpath through a local back streets.
The site is adjacent to an industrial estate, which whilst not being over intrusive there is the noise of reversing 'bleeps' from forklift trucks etc from early morning and all weekend. Whilst we were as far away as we could have been the pitches to the north are adjacent to the boundary of the park and this noise may be more noticeable.
Small Waitrose was more than adequate, an independent petrol station which is expensive, Chinese takeaway was good and the fish and chip shop, whilst being a little chaotic at what they think is busy (6 in the shop!) produces excellent fare at reasonable cost. It has a railway station with a two hourly service north to Lowestoft or south to Ipswich with some services going thorugh to London Liverpool Street.
Plenty to see and do and whilst places are some distance the roads are so quiet it never takes long to get anywhere. Southwold is about 15 miles, Aldeburgh 10, Dunwich 10 or so. Flora's in Dunwich is a great cafe - a real throwback to cafes of old. Unlike the money robbing tourist centres of Devon and Cornwall if you are prepared to get to the coast early you can park for free right on the seafront and for as long as you like - Southwold by the pier and Aldeburgh 5 minutes stroll from the centre passing the fishermen selling their catch of the day. The bass and sardines we bought were beatiful cooked on the bbq.
The Long Museum in Leiston is really interesting if you are into industrial heritage - for one company based in such a small town to have produced such a leading edge number of products is remarkable.
We'll definitely be back to Suffolk - for the middle of August we couldn't believe how quiet everywhere was - just as we like it and we wouldn't hesitate basing ourselves at Carlton Park.

A very pleasant site. The camping field is uncrowded and with some 'levelled' pitches to counteract the slight slope. Toilets and showers were clean and seemingly never busy. The site is surrounded by quiet countryside with pleasant walks on public footpaths past corn fields and woodland. The 'Poachers Pocket' pub can be reached after a 15 minute walk across the fields past the church - sadly cannot review as we arrived an hour before opening time!
The children's playground is reached after walking across the sports fields and is excellent - it is set in a deep hollow in the field with several slides, a zip wire and various other modern equipment. Our kids (6 and 4) loved it! There are also several picnic benches to sit at whilst supervising. The only downside is that it is too far from the campsite to allow young children to visit without supervision. The only other slight negative regarding the site is that the toilets will be a significant walk from some corners of the camping field.
Saxmundham (shops/pubs/Waitrose) is a 5 minute drive away and Dunwich / Aldeburgh / Southwold on the coast can all be reached in about 20-25 minutes.
All in all we found this to be a great and inexpensive site - we certainly aim to visit again soon.

We visited Carlton Park on a lovely sunny weekend in June 2010. The site wasn't too busy and we found plenty of room to pitch our tent at the bottom of the visitor field by the tennis courts.
The site facilities are not that new but are fine, plenty of hot water in the showers which were clean - never had to queue for showers. Saxmundham has a supermarket and take-aways and we weren't too far from Aldeburgh and Southwold. The warden came round in his car on the first night and asked if everything was OK and then again on Sunday morning to collect the pitch fees. The playground was too far away from the tents though for our 9 year old to be able to go and play alone.

Our second go at camping and this was a great site. Plenty of room for the kids to run around. As mentioned by others not many tents on site which was fine by us. Loos all clean and hot water.
Only found the playground when we were leaving. Nearest supermarket we found was Waitrose, a little pricey but great for the bbq food!
Would recommend to anyone.

Just returned from an excellent week at Carlton park. The camping pitches are spacious and they keep tents to a limited amount rather than cramming as many on as possible.
The owner came on his bike to take the money, have chat and made sure we had everything we needed. Toilet and shower blocks were very good, no problems there.
All in all it was a great site which we will be returning too soon. No hidden charges either, great site.Child and dog friendly too

This was our first time camping. My wife and I and two children (8 years old) thoroughly enjoyed our weekend here in our new tent. The children especially enjoyed the adventure playground which had so much for them to do that they really did not want to leave the site.
The showers and washing facilities were first rate, and we especially liked the family showers as we could all get ready together and keep an eye on the kids at the same time. All in all I would recommend this site for noobs like us, and speaking to more seasoned campers they too could not speak more highly of this site.

Just spent a great weekend at Carlton Park. The site is well kept and very peaceful. The toilets and showers were never busy and there was always plenty of hot water and loo roll!
There are some nice walks locally and the play area was fantastic - even for two teenagers (and adults!)
Unfortunately we couldn't get EHU for this weekend so cannot say if this was ok but the hoopups were sited in the middle of the small camping field around some trees and on the higher drier ground. It is quite a sloping site and we were at the 'bottom' and it did get quite cold and very damp at night.
There are lots of rooks/crows around this site and plenty of rabbits hopping around which is lovely to see.
Waitrose is about a 10 minute walk from the site (in Saxmundham). The town itself has plenty of shops and there were several fish and chips shops that looked nice.
This is a great site for visiting some beautiful places along the coast and we would definitely return again.
