We had an absolutely wonderful stay here. It's a perfect cheap, basic campsite with just taps and toilets. A river runs alongside which was fantastic for washing in and the pools higher up were joyful for swimming.
The views are jaw-dropping, there are plenty of flat spaces for setting up in and there was a warden on site for most of our time there which came in handy when the large party who pitched up next to us were very noisy.
We took incredible walks directly from the site and there are many, many more just a short drive away. There's a bus route on the main road about a mile and a half down the track if you don't want to drive.
When the noisy neighbours had gone the nights were silent, the night sky awesome and the remoteness meant no invasion from the usual incessant notifications - all we could get was a radio signal and that suited us just fine!
No need to book, you just pay in cash every evening when Nick the farmer or Holly the warden come around. Only one caution - the road up to the site is narrow and rocky so take care for your suspension.
Larger campervans would find it difficult and caravans would not be able to access the site.

It is the best campsite I know. Last year it was ruined by covid-denying large groups intent on partying and leaving rubbish. This year a full time warden is in place working hard alongside the farm owner, a very positive, professional and cheery man.
The warden was seen clearly being firm but fair and reinforcing the site rules. Things were back to that calm family and walking groups vibe that Stonethwaite is so good at.
Night times for sleeping were quiet, and those planning otherwise were asked to leave. Facilities are back-to-nature basic, a toilet block, taps and bins, and that is one of the attractions for me.
From the site we walked over Dock Tarn and down to Rosthwaite, and next day up mountain and stone quarry to Cat Bells and back along the riverbed.
I was too stiff to move on the third day, so a bimble in Keswick (massive traffic queues, took us an hour driving around to find somewhere a mile out of town and park) followed by a walk up the valley from the campsite for a swim in one of the many wild pools before driving home.
Brilliant place, and my favourite part of the Lakes for walking and wild swimming. Thanks so much to the farm owner for all the thought put in to making things work well this year and his kind approachable manner always.
I will be back.

A beautiful basic campsite which is great value. There is a rough track to get down to access it but we managed to get the campervan down it. Motor homes or caravans would not fit!
It was very quiet due to the time of year with few hardy campers and camper vans only. The farmer who runs the site was really friendly as always.
Just don’t expect extensive facilities.

Most amazing setting I have ever been for a campsite and I like the fact you can turn up when the English weather is good and set up camp (midweek). The toilets were better than I expected and clean gents and ladies separate.
The no showers and hot water didn't bother me as the surroundings made up for it. I would bring bottled water next time as it is a bit brown after bad weather. So we boiled the tap water to drink. It was relatively quiet midweek I wouldn't like to come at weekends after reading other reviews.
I have heard unfortunately the campsite is closed now due to irresponsible people. The farmer said the 2 men next to our tent didn't pay and left their broken tent. Such a shame for the farmer and wife, I'm not surprised they have closed it.
The Scafell pub we went to for food each night, both nights not great meals. The menu sounds posh but the food is not. Puddings we're cheap ice cream and not even worth the eat out to help out reduction price. Unless they have changed the quality of food mon-wed??? Hmmmm
We went to the wild swimming pools, it took us about 1. 20mins to walk with young children on very difficult paths in 30 degree heat. But absolutely worth it! We all loved the safe natural centre parcs. Bring your goggles! And arm bands for the kids.

We absolutely loved the campsite, we chose a beautiful spot, right by the stream, it was quiet, peaceful and stunningly beautiful,
The views around the valley were tremendous and it’s perfect access to an amazing walk upstream to some great swimming spots including black moss pot and it’s terrific upper and lower plunge pools!
Highly recommend, can’t wait to plan another visit. Excellent value for money.

Fantastic getaway for a few days into the outdoors. Brilliant location for walking the Cumbrian Way and exploring Black Moss Pot. The campsite is situated close to the river which offered a picturesque setting and lots of wild swimming opportunities. I enjoyed the remote feeling of ‘getting away from it all’. No phone signal which was a blessing. Zero light pollution in the valley which meant stargazing was incredible.
Lots of variety on where to pitch. No frills, very basic facilities, the washing-up facilities were a nice surprise as I was only expecting toilets and running water. The reedbed waste system was a clever way of preserving the environment & good to see that the site promoted the Leave No Trace ethos.
This stay was at the start of the ease of lockdown & when the sun came out it was clear to say the staycation is definitely upon us! The site implemented social distancing well and the friendly farmer/owner checked up on pitching to ensure social distancing was achieved between pitches, and even opened up two more fields to accommodate everyone.
The addition of the herd of sheep heading back to the hills via the track along the campsite was an amusing alarm for the everyone at 6:30am, my daughters loved the amount of livestock that were around the neighbouring fields and fells.
Thank you again Stonethwaite campsite for a wonderful few days of escapism. We will return again!

Loved the remote and scenic location of this site, even though there is zero phone reception and the access road isn't the best.
I stayed mid-week and it was relatively quiet, plenty of space to pitch away from other campers.
Only downside is no shower facilities or hot water.

Love the setting in the valley with the trees and the river.
Sadly I checked the website before leaving to read fires weren't permitted so we didn't take a fire pit but they were actually permitted with the campsite even selling wood. That was a little disappointing. The group next to us also played loud music until 3am.
The owners do a great job of coming around at 11ish asking people to turn the music off but that didn't stop the music going back on again.
Would like to come back mid-week when its quieter.

Back again, at one of the finest locations for scenery, tranquility and vfm.
Liked- tranquility, 5 quid pppn, walks, fires off ground allowed, the farmer is very chatty, wildlife, pub 5 mins walk, bus to Keswick 15 mins walk.
Dislikes- grass uncut, no showers, not enough water taps.
The down sides to this site are massively trumped by the laid back vibe and remoteness.
Minimal rules, semi wild camping at it's very best.
Very, very busy weekends and bank hols.
Midweek- virtually deserted.

Breathtaking location.
This is walking country, at its finest.
No showers (swim in river), no electricity, no phone signal.
Toilets adequate.
Very busy bank holidays.
Stone track up to site is not the widest, but transit van size vehicles will just do it.
£5 pp per night.
Laid back vibe, and the farmer is very friendly and charismatic.
One of my favourite sites.
PS. A walk up to blackmoss pot (40 mins from site) is highly recommended.
