Corker of a campsite! This little patch of peacefulness is perfect, next to the river with stunning views of the fells around Borrowdale and surrounded by wildlife.
We visited during the heatwave so the river was very low, and a few mornings just after sunrise we saw 3 mink going up then down the far riverbank, one sunset there was a beautiful fallow deer skipping up the middle of the river, as well as numerous heron fishing in the pools and stunning dragonflies.
Loads of walks from the site and in Borrowdale ranging from easy to down right crazy, and just a short walk up the river are lovely pools where people were swimming, looked great fun for kids!
The site itself is what we love, nice flat areas and no strict rules about where to pitch, simply choose your spot! Fires allowed but in fire baskets etc. Facilities are nice and basic, toilet and taps - what more do ya need?
The site can get a bit busy on weekends, but all our neighbours were nice and not too obtrusive. The farmer/owners collect payment of £5 per person per night in the evening and are quite relaxed and friendly, and there doesn't seem to be any stress on leaving by a certain time when you go.
The road to the campsite though, I cannot stress enough about the road! It's a very stony narrow twisting turning track with only 2 very small almost passing places - two campervans meeting would struggle! I was so intimidated by the track that when we parked the van up I didn't start it again until we left 1 week later, lol. We used the bus which is a 15 min walk from the site, and goes to Keswick or Buttermere and all the lovely little villages in between, and not driving gave me the perfect excuse for a midday gin!
All in all it's a perfect site, I wouldn't even want the road repairing as it adds to the charm!

One of my favourite campsites in the Lakes. Even in the summer school holidays it was reasonably quiet a it’s at the end a valley so no through road/traffic.
The campsite is large, and spread out along the river with plenty of space for people to spread out and have their own space. Basic toilets (no showers), and tap water. All you need and for £5 a night, it’s just perfect! No need to book.
Lane up to it is a rough track so don’t bring your sports car! Dogs welcome. Pub two minutes walk away. Walks aplenty and no need to use your car for the duration of your stay.
Recommended for any who love the lakes but hate the crowds and tourist hot spots. Just don’t tell anyone about it!

Been here many times now and plan on going back at a fiver a head per night I have no complaints. It's peaceful during the week and has a nice walk up the river to black moss pot. Which is safe enough to jump in and cool off.
Roughly 15-20 minute drive into Keswick town centre and a local pub a walk up from the campsite. The farmer is friendly and keeps an eye on the site. Drinking, dogs and raised camp fires all allowed as long as you keep your neighbouring campers in mind.
There is no signal so a perfect escape from technology and toilet facilities with cold running water to clean pots etc. This camp site is perfect for tent camping especially in small groups.
We have been in a group of 8 all pitched together around 1 fire. Have also seen a few camper vans which seem to be popular for this site. I have been back rain and shine every year since my first visit.
I'm not a pro camper and not particularly passionate about it but I enjoy getting down to Stonethwaite Farm Campsite once or twice a year

Absolutely love this site, been coming here several years, with our son and even granddaughter,
Yes it's very basic, toilets and cold water only BUT the location and views are stunning!
Lovely and peaceful through the week but the weekend and bank holidays can be noisy and very busy, ,
The farmer is a lovely man, and makes regular patrols to keep things in order,

Stunning, rural campsite. Basic facilities, but you know that already from the reviews on here.
Lovely flat grassy pitches which allow you to use BBQs and camp fires if raised off the ground.
Toilets and pot washing facilities use cold water only and a reed bed waste system.
You really are in the middle of nowhere here, so don't expect a mobile phone signal. But, do expect to feel your shoulders start to relax and the joy of not worrying what your hair looks like after a few days!
The location is right in the heart of the Borrowdale valley - on the banks of the River Derwent, which is directly accessible from near the toilet blocks - great for cold storage and washing!
Please beware that access to the site is via a very narrow and rough dirt track which will test your vehicle and possibly cause some underside damage. Definitely one for the rally drivers amongst us! Meeting a vehicle coming the other way is eventful so be prepared to reverse.
There are many and plentiful walks upriver and downriver directly from the site. Upriver are stunning rock pools, waterfalls and natural pools in which you can laze, swim, leap, relax, clamber and cool off. Take a picnic and spend the day exploring - plus some wetshoes to avoid cuts and scrapes on the soles of your feet.
Venture out to Grange for a day and experience wider, calmer river in which you can enjoy a tranquil day.
You will need to go as far as Keswick (20 mins drive through winding roads and stunning scenery alongside Derwent Water) for camp supplies - but plenty there is!
If you don't fancy another night of campsite BBQ food, pub grub is available nearby just down the bottom of the rough dirt track but also in nearby Rothswaite, which was very good.
The kids also enjoyed ice creams from the little shop at the bottom of the track (which only sells ice creams/sweets so don't expect milk etc!)
Be prepared for rain (it is the Lakes after all) and midges - you are next to a river!
The owners are very relaxed but do patrol every day and we were there on a busy school holiday weekend in July. Site gets busy on the weekend but not disturbingly so and got noticeably quieter on the Monday.
Enjoy this campsite if you don't mind basic facilities in a stunning location right next to some fantastic scenery and walks. Totally unspoilt.

We came from London, I arrived at the campsite at night time around about 10 o'clock, it was pitch black so we set up our tent and just went to bed.
In the morning I had the biggest surprise ever, how beautiful was this place? The views are stunning. The river is fantastic and amazingly clean, we got in with our welly boots a couple of times.
Owner/warden is a nice bloke, very friendly. Really enjoyed my experience here with the exception of our last night which we were absolutely battered by wind and rain, but obviously nobody is at fault there.
Please note that this campsite is in the absolute middle of nowhere so you might want to drive into town near Booths-the supermarket to get signal.
We couldn't find any bins so we burnt the rubbish we had left over from our trip over our campfire which was elevated off the ground by rocks we collected from the river and an old metal oil barrel we found in the woods.
Overall its a great experience and recommend that you go here if you really want to get the most out of your Lake District experience.

A truly fabulous, but basic, campsite. Don't come here expecting hot showers and an EPU! But do come to get away from pseudo campers and to get truly back to nature. We spent two glorious nights here with a group of friends. Campfires (off the ground) are allowed, and the pitches are level and spacious.
Avoid bank holidays if you don't want the festival atmosphere, and camp nearer the (very basic, but perfectly good) toilet block for a quieter nights sleep. A few minutes walk from the site upstream you'll find pools to swim in and rocks to splash from. Take a 5km hike up the river and you'll reach a fabulous deep splash pool to dive into.
Beware windy conditions, we broke a tent pole on our final night as the valley is a wind tunnel. The farmer is great, and dealt swiftly with a rowdy group the next morning! There are NO showers on site but that didn't bother us even though we were there for three days as we swam in the river (the weather was perfect apart from the last night). The pub next to the campsite is well worth a visit, the food was fantastic and so were the beers.
It cost us a mere £5 per person per night and we are definitely going back again next year.

Arrived in a LWB Mercedes Sprinter campervan which was our first time camping
we found this site by sheer luck at 5pm, we were extremely surprised on how quiet it was, the only noise we heard was the running river which was beautiful.
We were a bit unsure whether we could actually get the van up the track as it is very narrow, after a hairy and scary drive which was extremely tight we managed to arrive at the campsite.
Excellent weekend, lovely walks for a nine year old girl and dog. Would definitely go again. Be aware the track is very tight and a wide campervan/motorhome would probably not get through.
Great weekend. Cant comment on facilities as we had our own.

We have camped here for a number of years, both in tents and a campervan and keep coming back. The site is really only accessible with 4 wheel drive or smaller van with good clearance underneath due to the rocky road. We once did it in a Jag. But wouldn't recommend it.
When you get there its well worth the journey. No modern technology just a toilet block and dish washing area, with cold water. The waste water is filtered by a reedbed system.
Old fashioned camping at it's best the scenery is fantastic and the atmosphere is friendly. Swimming is possible further upriver in several spots.
Although its quite a distance from any shops there is a Pub that you pass on the way, for a drink and a meal.
NB. If you do have a fire or b-b-q please keep it off the ground and ensure it is doused with water and completely cold before abandoning it. Our Labrador once stood in the what looked like cold embers of an earlier fire on the riverbank. Which were actually still hot and badly burned his paw.

A superb site, very quite at this time of year with a few families and a group of Duke of Edinburgh only. Toilets and cleaning area immaculate. Site has many differing pitches. The road to it is ok but not for cars with low slung chassis as will hit rocks etc. Meal in The Longstrath Arms was outstanding. Will definitely return, given previous reviews I will give Bank Holidays a miss. Super value in a gorgeous setting, excellent as a base camp for Scafeel Pike or over the top to The Langdales, many routes to choose from. No frills but lovely.
