This is my 3d visit to this campsite, just me and my dog,
I absolutely love this place its what camping should be, basic beautiful location, ok it can be noisy on bank holidays but I found the noise generally dropped after eleven. Farmer and his helper are friendly. It wouldn't be my wifes cup of tea as she likes her facilities/hot showers etc. Me I just boil water for a wash or use the river. I love how you arrive and don't have to use the car as the walks/fells are all around you. I don't use the pub as don't allow dogs, so cant comment
Got to say my last visit the weather was fantastic and the site wasn't busy so a perfect weekend. 10/10

A nicely placed little site, and handy for the Coast to Coast walk.
Upsides - very pretty, very cheap, and the pub is 5 minutes away.
Downsides - the facilities extend to flushing toilets and running cold water. The covered washing up area was handy as I could pack my kit under cover thus keep it a little drier. However wild camping offers much more for no charge.
The area where I was pitched (southern end of the site closer to the pub) was very stony, and it was hard to get pegs in to any depth. The ground felt hard to sleep on as well. A tent opposite me had pulled three or four pegs and was setting off to the Isle of Man. You will need a mallet and good pegs here, or improvise and use the rocks that lie around all over.
The pub is small and gets busy fast - bookings are essential if you want to eat.
The site is unmanned which I guess is one reason you get the rowdy element mentioned by other campers. It also meant there was no one to pay for my stay.
No regrets about staying here but that was an overnighter on a weekday; I wouldn't come back at a weekend or plan an extended stay to be honest. Sorry NT.

I've been to this campsite both with my family and with groups of Bronze Dof E students for about the last 5 yrs and I love going back each time.
I must admit I try to avoid holiday times as it does get very rowdy with car stereos and lots of boozers, but they generally move on once the farmer has told them to be quiet.
I love having an open fire and as long as its not on the ground and you bring your own wood fires are generally acceptable but if you burn the grass you will be warned and then asked to leave, as this campsite should not be ruined by human invaders!
The toilet system is now the 'reed system', which is coming along nicely now the reeds have started to grow but it can be quite smelly when you pass it on the way to the loo, so don't camp too closely to the toilet reed area. Highly recommended just not on bank holidays.

The campsite is accessed via a very stony uneven track, drive very slowly if you don't want your car damaged!
Its priced at £5 per person a night. There are toilets (no lighting at night) and washing up sinks, but no showers and no hot water.
There is also a stream running through the site which is cold but great fun for having a wash for the more adventurous!
We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon and the site was already quite busy but it was half term. You just pitch anywhere, we got a lovely spot by the stream.
It was lovely and peaceful until Friday afternoon when a lot of big groups arrived with loud car stereos and a lot of shouting, we decided to walk to the pub (about a 5 minute walk) and go back a bit later when I was hoping everyone would have quietened down. This wasn't the case and the music from various cars and groups was still going past 11 which is when the no noise rule kicks in. I felt really sorry for the farmer because he came down about 4 times to tell everyone to be quiet. They weren't listening but I managed to fall asleep at around 1am thanks to ear plugs!
Very Early the next morning the farmer was back to kick 3 (around 20 people) groups off the site for the noise they made so I was very happy that tranquillity had been restored!
Even after this I can say this is one of the most beautiful campsites I have visited and we will definitely be going back. If you turn to the left as you go into the site there is a smaller area to camp which was much more peaceful where we will be going next time.
Perfect for any campers including families although the proximity of the stream may be a worry for very small children. The lack of shower may be off putting for some. No electric hook ups but this is a site that is perfect for those who like to get back to basics when they go camping!
Nearest pub about 5 minute walk (reservations required for eating) also a small cafe selling ice cream. The nearest shops are in keswick which is a 15 minute drive from the site and there are plenty of other pubs and hotels on the way there.
Considering the price of some campsites in the lakes this was well worth it just for the beautiful location. We will definitely be returning!

Just thought I would give you all an update on this great basic site. There is now washing up facility joined to the toilet block (not hot water)
I was there with my grandson and the dog and it never stopped raining all week except for 1 day but that did not stop us from having a great time. I just hope all is ok since the floods and I can not wait to go back next year.

Hello! if you want almost back to basics, this is the site to go for! I first went about 5 years ago, then insisted my friends from uni go there for a reunion. The atmosphere is very relaxed, just take into account families might be camping nearby and keep the noise down.
Misjudged the first reunion and went over a bank holiday,BUSY! ok, we might be a group of 8, drinking till early hours, BUT, we did respect other campers and kept our voices low (honestly!)
As others have mentioned, the farmer is an absolute star, but he will not tolerate loud groups, especially those who go into the protected area of woods nearby and start breaking branches of trees to burn, sadly I have witnessed this and couldn't believe it! BUY YOUR WOOD IN KESWICK! also, if you havent brought anything to light an open fire on (don't put it on the ground!) there is ALWAYS something useful to be found near the bins/recycling point.
Infact, almost feel bad recommending this place as its so beautiful, the less people know about it, the better.
Ps, ive rated site facilities 2 out of 10, because there are only two - loos and sinks. If you like any form of luxury, I cant recommend it. If you like spectacular panoramic views, fresh air and a bath in a raging torrent in a morning, then this is the one to go for.
Oh heck, nearly finished. Lovely pub nearby, bit on the expensive side but v nice (midges can be a bit keen if sitting outside)decent vegetarian choice, shop a bit further on, also expensive, but hey! this is probably the cheapest campsite in the country, stop complaining!

Me, the OH and a group of friends visit this campsite yearly and really would recommend it to those who don't mind the 'basics'. The track down is rough, there are no set out pitches- just grab a spot so it can get a little cosy as it is an extremely popular site. The toilets are always clean, the farmer very plesant and although it says no camp fires, he will happily provide you with a tray to keep it off the floor (just doesn't want the grass burning). The walks are lovely and the waterfalls are gorgeous. The stream running through is freezing but shallow. Do expect to wake up to the sound of sheep being rounded up by a dog and a quad bike- 6am! luckily I was already awake thanks to the cuckoo! we tend not to leave the campsite by car once we are there as it is a single track full of craters so when you get half way and meet another car nobody wants to reverse! -fab campsite all round.

We arrived at this campsite on a Friday afternoon and although it was raining quite hard we absolutely loved it, the location and scenery is the best I have ever seen.
Facilities are new, clean and more than adequate!
The farmer is chatty, friendly and very helpful.
HOWEVER! I would not recommend going there on a weekend. Now before you read this I would like to explain that we are a young couple ourselves and enjoy a bit of a drink and a laugh when we go camping, we are certainly not the type to be asleep by 9pm and are definitely not the complaining type. BUT, Shortly after we pitched a group of young lads turned up, before long the happy hardcore music started blasting out, not to my taste but I didn't mind too much as the farmer assured us that they would quiet down at 11pm He couldn't have been more wrong, at about 11 a load more of them turned up so there was now about 15 of them, and the music got louder.
The farmer told them several times to be quiet and they completely ignored him, so eventually he told them to leave, of course they continued to ignore him and there was nothing he could do.
So, we had a hellish night, fortunately they left late the next day.
It was such a shame as this is an amazing place and these complete scumbags ruined it.

I've been to this campsite four times in the past two years.
Contrary to other reviews, the road into the site really isnt that bad. If you think it is, you're driving too fast. There are several places where two vehicles can pass (I have experienced this several times without issue).
One of the really cool things about Stonethwaite is the variety of people you get there. I have met people from Newcastle, Liverpool, Scotland, the South (wherever that is) even one really nice chap from Japan. Everyone is usually friendly (well they are on holiday so its what I would expect).
People can be a bit noisy but if a collective complaint is made, its usually ok.
If you're not fond of dogs, its probably not ideal as there are often dogs running around loose (and in my case urinating on my possessions (the dogs, not me))
Its a very basic site and this is precisely why I like it.
I don't bother with bottled water as the river water is fine once boiled.
Just behind the site is the imposing High Raise.
I climbed/walked this with my son as far as High White Stones and around Sergeants and Eagle crags.
I don't normally use this word as I feel it is over used but the view all the way to Grasmere from the top is truly stunning.
I have been to a few other sites but they have all disappointed me after Stonethwaite.

This is my 3rd year at this camp site. Nick the farmer/owner is a great bloke and very helpful. I have never been to any other campsite and will not find a better place. It is basic as mentioned in previous posts.
There is a toilet block and wash basins basic but that is all you need. You do get the odd rowdy lot who think they can just pitch and make noise but Nick is well on top of that now and I have often seen him evict campers who do not stick to the rules.
I have found the majority of other campers friendly and helpful. The walks and scenery I don't think could be beaten any where else in England.
When it rains here though it rains and if you get the wind as well you could be like me and lose 3 tents of which I have in the past 12 months. But it has not put me off as when you do get the sun it is glorious.
You don't need showers or washing up facilities there's a beck/Stream and cold water taps. After all what did we do before we had the comforts we have at home, if you want comfort the home is best, but if you want really fresh air and invigorating walks and scenery then this place is the best.
I have read the reviews on campsites with all the comforts and rules and regulations this site has only the country code and a no camp fires and no noise after 11pm. I have a lot of respect for the ones that follow these few rules on this site.(No Hook ups)
