If you want basic this site is it. As other reviews have stated the road into the site is a bit hairy to say the least. This was the very first and only campsite I have ever been to. I started coming here in 2006. I visit at least 3 times a year and although this last visit was rather wet it did not stop my Grandsons, my Daughter, dog and myself having fun.
My Daughter arrived a few days after we did and then left with her 2 boys aged 9 and 11 to give me some peace with my dog. It was sods law as it stopped raining after they left, just long enough on the Thursday for me to take off on one of my walks.
Although I have to be careful on letting the dog have a run and a swim because of the sheep I love Stonethwaite. I have encountered a little rowdiness but this does not happen very often. I have found everyone very friendly and the only time my dog barks is if anyone comes very close to the tent at night but once I explain I find they give my tent a wide birth.
Poor Nick the Farmer is the only other person my dog barks at but then its only to say hello when he arrives to collect the fee's.I have always found the toilets very clean.
This year was the worst for weather but if it's peace and quiet meaning no phones no radio reception and apart from the occasional car stereo this site is perfect.I have been searching the internet for other campsites a bit closer to home but none can compare to the tranquillity, scenery and the price of £4 per person per night.

I stayed here last Saturday night and thought it was pretty good. It's a nice secluded setting, no chance of hearing road noise from here! The track in is very rough, as described by others, and it was quite painful hearing our car getting scraped on the way in/out! (It's only a Focus, nothing particularly low!)
As it's by a beck, there are midges which is a bit of a pain, and I also got a tick! Can't really blame that on the campsite though.
Toilet blocks were ok, clean enough although not lit up at night. Could have done with a sink to wash dishes in. It's quite a big site and there's only 1 loo block so it would be a fair old walk if you're at the other end.
Not being able to drink the water was a hassle, expecially as we only had a a frying pan to boil it in!
Despite the 'no camp fires' signs, several people ignored this and there were quite a few fires after dark, plus remnants of fires & disposable BBQs lying around here and there.
We didn't have a problem with noise, even though it was a Saturday night on a hot weekend in June.
The walk to the Langstrath Inn in the village was great - over a stile and across a field! I did like that. Nice little characterful pub too with lovely outside seating area. There were signs up saying they didn't serve drinks to non-diners but we didn't have any trouble. Pretty expensive, but that's normal for The Lakes.
All in all I thought it was a pretty nice site, and at £4 per person you can't argue, but I don't think I would go back in a hurry - too many others to try.

Fantastic campsite, great views. The road in is a bit poor but perfectly managable on motorbikes. The site owner is a very helpful guy bringing bottled water to all campers to make up for the lack of drinking water on site. Any noisey idiots soon quieten down after a brief chat!. All in all a very enjoyable stay. The pub in Stonethwaite is a no no. But the pub/ hotel in Rosthwaite is superb, with good food and drink. Will definitely go back. Dont be put off by the road in or tales of noisey idiots at weekends. Walk to the waterfall (superb). Toilet block was fine and very clean.

We saw this site while on a day's walk with our two children and just had to pitch our tent here. It is in the most peaceful, remote and picturesque setting, with 360 degree views of stunning ridges and crags, river frontage and several waterfalls and swimming holes nearby. Our first night, Thursday, lived up entirely to our expectations. The access is a bit rough, as previous reviewers have mentioned, but we chose a great pitch, lit our barbecue (off the ground) and enjoyed sitting out while the dark descended. There were owls, bats and not too many midges. There are no showers, but the toilet block is quite decent. There were some problems with the water supply which meant campers were advised to boil all water before drinking. Small price to pay for such a wonderful place. We wondered if our fellow campers knew something we didn't when almost all the other tents were taken down on Friday morning and we were left with only one or two other tents in the main field. The rot set in, when through the afternoon cars and vans arrived with car stereos blaring and it appeared the tranquillity was about to be irrevocably ruined. A request to reduce the noise was met with the response, "it's only music and we come here every week." Despite campsite rules stating no excessive noise especially between 11pm and 7am, the noise continued and grew worse, with even louder "music", shouting, rawcous singing and motorbike engines revving until finally the farmer came onto the site after 2am and managed to achieve silence. To be fair the miscreants were ejected next morning and the farmer was apologetic and did not charge for that night. Can't be good for his business. The broken glass and campfire scars on and near the riverbank SSSI must make his job harder too. There can be only one solution to prevent this site becoming a no go area for families, fell walkers and tranquility seekers at weekends - zero tolerance for amplified music and strict adherence to the rule that there should be 6m between tents (honoured more in the breach than the observance in the offending areas of the camp). I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for the use of the site, despite lack of facilities if I could be assured of a peaceful stay. In the meantime we would love to come back but it will be weekdays only, though we might just stick to the official National Trust sites where rules are policed.

Arrived around 8pm on Monday night. One or two on the site but not many. It was drizzling and the clouds were low over the valley. It really was beautiful. If you like to get away from society, and welcome a feeling of remoteness, solitude and non conformity this site is for you. There are no electric hook ups and no shower blocks. Just a basic toilet block situated at the near end of the site, hidden amongst some trees. I stayed in a converted camper but I was charged the same rate as my friends who were staying in tents £4:00 per night which is very fair indeed. They really need to do something with track that leads from the village to the site, it is bad! But worth it! The site is located about 5 -7 miles outside of Keswick and a bus runs from the top of the village. We had a Bar B Q (off the Grass) and a Fire ( in a portable Bar B Q) although it was damp it didn't prevent us from enjoying our first night. The next day was glorious sunshine and we headed to the nearby lake "derwent water" where we hired some small motor boats for an hour, had our lunch and returned to the site and went upstream to some lovely waterfalls and swimming area, it was great fun. I will return. I am returning tonight in fact, even if its is chucking it down. So long as I can get on ok and its not flooded I will enjoy this beautiful site.

Myself, my mate Denise and her dog Riley arrived on Sunday early eve 6th May expecting the site to be heaving but it wasn't which was nice, as had only read previous reviews from this site and was anticipating a mad crowd of beered up kids on the rampage! Maybe that happened on the sat night instead??? First time in this area and the campsite is surrounded by breath taking scenery, totally off the beaten track which is what we wanted. Yes, the unmade road is a bit hairy but totally ok for my humble megane to negotiate. There are def no showers on this site but the toilet block is ok, basic, with some cold running water taps. The waterfalls are amazing!
Nick, the owner is a sweetie, comes round bout 8am ish to collect £4 per person per nite, which is great value. Helpful guy too with what to do and how to get there etc.
There is a pub/hotel in Stonethwaite which is bout 5 min walk from campsite through the fields next to the river. It is ok, but not really geared up for campers/walkers etc as most of the tables of an eve are reserved for the hotel guests and the bar area is quite small to stand around in. However. bout another 10 min walk away is Rothswaite which has a place called Scarfell Hotel which looks very posh from the outside but has a walkers bar at the back which is a great place to hang out & have few beers n chats with other hikers/campers etc. Also dog friendly. The beer is very good too & the and food we saw coming out of the kitchen looked very appetising! There is also a fantastic little convenience shop a bit further on from the Scarfell Hotel that is tiny but has nearly everything you could think of. Our list consisted of camera film, vodka, postcards & BBQ briquettes amongst other stuff that was all readily available. We went to the nearby Trout Farm in Seathwaite, didnt fish, but went to this lovely little cafe there and had fresh homemade soup and panfried trout with salad which was divine.followed by sticky toff pud n cream!
We have really enjoyed our stay in Stonethwaite esp staying in a campsite with such basic facilities.the surrounding views more than make up for lack of amenities. Anyway our previous "campsite" was some woodland forest in Brinscall Lancs but that's another story.

My two friends and I arrived on Wednesday, 4 April 2007 this year. A day earlier than usual. I'm glad we did because when we got up on the Thursday morning, the whole place was almost full! Wednesday night the tent literally froze. I ended up spending the night in the car! The rest of the weekend (we left on Bank Holiday Monday) the weather was outstanding. Definitely shorts and t-shirt weather. Ok, so the site is still as amazing as ever. The scenery still beautiful, the stream gently crashing over the rocks of a night time, the toilets still without electricity (glad I remembered my torch this year), and the Geordies were still rowdy! Before I get on to that matter, I'd like to say that whoever wrote in their review of this site, saying that there were now showers, I'd like to know where. Unless they are solely in the mens toilets, there wasn't any. Back onto my moan. Last year the lads and girls who came over from Newcastle were loud: This year my friends and I didn't sleep for three nights because these "chavs" insisted on staying up drinking, shouting and playing their club music till dawn. I did, however, get my own back on them a couple of times. Nights one and two, I woke them all up by putting my car radio on full blast in the morning, and night three I'd had enough, so I complained to Nick who then kicked them all off site. Another point I'd like to make is that fires are no longer allowed on this site. The stream has been fenced off (pitiful), and there is a strict policy in effect. I think a fire must have got out of control for Nick (the farmer) to do this. On our first night, we were having a BBQ (lifted off the grass by flat stones in order not to burn anything) and two lads came over talking to us. They left the next day. It's such a shame because they were really nice people and I would've liked them to stick around. (If you're one of these lads, I think one of you came from Caldbeck, PLEASE message me). So all-in-all, that's my "new" review of the place. I'm not letting a load of trish-tradh keep me from my favourite place in Britain.

What a place - have been twice in the past 3 years and cannot beat this place. The campsite is as described previously by other people. It's along a narrow path, not car friendly but manageable. The place itself it set in between the hills of Cumbria, pitch your tent near to the river and crack open a beer and the BBQ - will defiantly be travelling this time round again and climbing up the hills to review the whole landscape. During the day, there is Keswick 10 mins driver and a pub literally 2 mins walk from the site. If you do decide to attempt hit the summit of one of the many hills - watch out for the goats - they run fast.

Absolutely loved this site! Really let us get away from it all. It is down a rather narrow unmade road that my car didn’t like too much, would be better with a 4x4. The site it’s self is great we didn’t see and shower block but it was raining rather heavily all the time we were there, got soaked a lot but all added to the fun. The waterfalls are really near by but not close enough to keep you awake. Not sure if it had hookups as we have not got anything to plug into them. The toilet block was clean enough but didn’t have any lights, again didn’t bother us as we had a torch. We pitched near the far end by the stream and there was not much soil before the pegs hit rock so had to put the pegs in almost horizontal, but the tent stayed up very well. All in all I would love to come back to this site time after time.

Did this site last weekend [19/20 Aug 06]. Been here before a long time ago. Great little site. Good for people who don't like conformity. Very basic site, in a very beautiful place. It now boasts a shower block - 50p per shower. Toilets - 2 each. Outside washup facilities. Lady comes round to your tent every morning. 8am- ish for your £5 per person per night. Our trip there was only spoilt by some young 'uns coming back from the pub and talking / laughing till 2am. They got kicked off the site the next morning, but we had only 1 hours sleep - Unlucky. Yea I'd definitely go again, but with hindsight I'd pitch my tent as far as possible from the car park, because young 'uns are lazy buggers and pitch their tents close to car park. Miserable? me? nahh, just need my beauty sleep.:-). I love Borrodale.!
