Booked a last minute night. 24hr notice. £25 1 night hook up. Easy to find close to overton and ellesmere. Warm welcome fromGary. Helped you to your pitch etc.

Shower block clean and all working. New block been built too. Site is clean lovely gardens. Hard standing l think on all pitches. Narrow road way. Only niggle.

Pub on site very good food served lovely hospitality by the landlords. Wifi in pub and on site.

Leaflets and rules given out on arrival.

Dog friendly and walking area.

Walking distance to Overton were we stopped for a drink in a lovely pub The white horse. Excellent recommend. Took 1 hour too walk at a normal pace.

Ellesmere is appox 3miles otherway. However l do believe there are taxi to come back.

Adult only site very peaceful and everyone so polite and friendly. Recommended site

No shop etc on site

Very disappointed. Over priced. Not suitable for disabled people. The fella helped us site the caravan gave us some adverts.

Never told us where the toilets/showers were, didn't know where the chemical toilet disposal was.

On the stones or gravel where our awnings was there is no drainage, we had 2 days of heavy rain and it was water logged inside awning, we had to roll our trouser legs up so they wouldn't get wet.

Lovely peaceful site, pitches are well laid out,

We enjoyed our stay very much and thought the site was lovely, very clean and tidy,

We had a meal in the restaurant, which was very nice, not too expensive,

The only cons I would say, is hubby used the showers during his shower someone flushed the loo, which ruined the shower, cold then hot,

I would recommend the trotting mare caravan site, but I personally feel that £30 a night for a nice pitch is a bit expensive.

Went to this park for the fishing, but didn't see many other people fishing, and only landed small fish, even though the owner kept saying they had 'big' fish in the ponds. Still a work in progress, and construction work going on, unsightly in places.

Very noisy site, the owner seemed to like using power tools and ride-on mowers endlessly. Seemed they neglected the toilet / shower block cleanliness, lots of dust and toilet leaking in the gents. We paid £25 for a small pitch with no awning, we would have had trouble getting in the car if we did have an awning.

Lots of gravel everywhere, not good for the dog's paws, and dog walk was a bit worrying as it frequently had cows in the walking field, was worried about the dog or us getting attacked by the cows. Would only consider for a stop-over in the future. Overpriced

One redeeming feature was the pub, very nice food at a reasonable price.

We've just returned from a 4 night stay on this site. In brief, it has a mix of seasonal caravans and some pitches for those whose stays are of a shorter duration. Apparently, the mix is fifty-fifty. A couple of reviews mention there being lots of gravel on site. Can I put this straight? It is stone chippings not gravel.

Gravel has a light, pleasant colour, stone chippings are darker, sharper and get trudged into the van only to come to light when you stand on them in your stockinged feet. As this is a year-round site I am guessing the inordinate amount of chippings is so one doesn't get grass and mud in the van during winter and wet periods.

In my humble opinion it is a mixed blessing. A bit of grass around the van is altogether a nicer option especially if there is hardstanding to park on.

There is EHU, a grey water drain and fresh water tap on pitch. It has an ablutions block with two separate men's and women's loos, two showers. Close by the block is a chemical waste area. The site is situated behind The Trotting Mare pub, serving reasonable food. The managers are absolutey lovely and very helpful if, like me, you are a vegetarian. Very friendly, they were.

In essence: Pros -

Quiet adult only site.

Nice pond with resident ducks.

Some attractive grass areas on parts of the site along with flower beds (well, strictly speaking, shrub beds. )

Clean facilities (apart from the top of the shower stall - historically important dust samples to be found).

Cons -

Unpleasant amount of ultra crunchy stone chippings.

The aforementioned historically important dust, and shower gel bottle receptacle inside the cubicle which was seriously yucky inside. Also, the industrial type rubber mats for stepping out of the shower onto were uncomfortable and not particularly nice to look at. Still, the important bits of the facilities were nice and clean so that's the most important thing.

The price - for 25 quid a night I expect a little more than a dated ablutions block with a knackered outer door sporting a draught-inducing gap where one of the panels has slipped.

The size of the pitches, at least the area where we were was skimpy. There's no way we could have put up an awning, not without creating a tripping up situation for people crunching, sorry, walking to the showers.

Once more, in my humble opinion, the three pitches where we were should have been no more than two. We were stuck on the end - pitch no. 15 - and, unless you enjoy the sense of being like a pea on a drum, parked on the end with no privacy, reject this pitch if you're offered it.

I'm sure other parts of the site would evoke a different response from me but I can only speak as I find - it is neat and tidy, and quiet but overpriced.

We visited this site due to a last minute change of mind for going away at new year and I'm glad we did. From my first initial phone call to check if they still had a space which bear in mind was the day before New Year's Eve to us ending up staying an extra night.

Gary the owner met us upon arrival and was very helpful and even reversed us into our spot.

The site had a nice mix of seasonal and short breakers and we were made to feel very welcome.

The food and entertainment in the pub was excellent, as were Barry and kath who run the pub and were excellent hosts.

Site nice and quiet- showers and toilets were always clean. Nice to hear music on when showering (it's the small touches).

Lots of gravel on site which was slightly annoying as quite noisy but that's the only thing I can say that is negative about the site.

Ellesmere village approx 10 min drive, so you did feel in the middle of nowhere but again that didn't bother us.

We shall be returning again in the future.

We have visited the trotting mare on numerous occasions in the last three years. The site is an adults only site. We had never been to adults only before we couldn't believe how quiet it is. The park is beautifully kept by the owner and toilet block is clean and warm.

There Is a pub on site that sells lovely home cooked food. On site there are some seasonal pitches and the people we meet always welcome us each time we come.

The owner is always very helpful and would do anything for you. We will be coming back we enjoy it every time we come. Mr and Mrs Dutton.

This is a very friendly site and does have a lot of friendly seasonal pitch holders. I must correct the previous reviewer on their facts, the incident in question took place at quarter to two in the morning not half past eleven when the reviewers party of 2 tents, 4 people and 5 dogs were still drinking and shouting which is a little inconsiderate when you are directly behind a caravan.

They were supplied with a regulation hook up cable as well as the extension lead. I'm sorry they didn't enjoy the site, maybe it just didn't suit their particular style of camping.

Yes there is a lot of gravel around the site as it is being landscaped over the winter. The site is a credit to the owner.

If you like gravel you are in for a treat, it's everywhere. There is even a big pile by the front gate in case they run out. We recently stayed two nights here as my partner was taking part in a local bike challenge. We very much felt the experience was like camping in a gravel car park and not what we normally consider to be our preference. Most of the pitches are season pitches and all the pitches are packed very tightly. We were told to camp directly behind a season pitch and given an indoor extension lead as our paid for electric, which we felt would be a little unsafe to use. The season pitch users all sat and watched their televisions, but we enjoy the social aspect of camping. At half eleven we were approached by one of the season pitchers, swearing and being aggressive and told us to stop talking because he was going to bed and it was a quiet site. The next night the pub had a karaoke which went on to the early hours, contradicting the request to stop talking the night before! The toilets were clean and simple. All in all if you like camping on a car park and irritable season pitchers then this one is for you.

I have just returned from a lovely week at the Trotting Mare. Could not fault it at all despite the weather not being very kind to us. When we arrived we were met by the owner who not only showed us to our pitch, but hooked us up and assisted us to put the awning up. Very helpful chap indeed! The site itself was well maintained, toilet and shower block was pristine the whole time we were there. So all in all I would thoroughly recommend this site and look forward to returning in the not too distant future.
