It wasn't for us at all and is in the middle of nowhere. Pub looked okay but if you're not into pubs then there's not much else on the site, especially for kids. When we stayed it had rained quite heavily and the 'pitch' was flooded , which is okay in a caravan but no good with an awning and 4 of us in the van. Just not our bag I'm afraid

We arrived at the site which is located behind the pub and thought that this looks nice (the pub was nice). Got booked in and straight on to a pitch no problems at all, although a little crowded. Once set up I went for a shower only to find that there was no water pressure at all (regardless of what time I went). There were only 2 toilet cubicles and showers with one wash basin in the gents which on a bank holiday was extremly busy. The washing up facilities werent much to shout about either as the roof line was low, great if you were about 4 feet tall. The campsite was kept clean and tidy so had no issues with this. There was lots to do if you have the time as you could drive into Wrexham or go to Chester City or even go to Chester Oaks the outlet village in Ellesmere Port all of which are great if you like shopping.

Stayed at The Trotting Mare again last weekend. This has to be my favourite site, not least because it's not far from home! Have been going there now for more than 3 years and, although the withdrawal of the children's play area was a blow, the overall standard of the site has continued to rise as the owner carried on with his planned improvements.
The site was quite full but the facilities were more than adequate and there is now a washing up area. We had a carvery lunch in the pub on Sunday which was very nice and good value.

My wife and I plus 2 other couples have just returned from a 3 day stay over the August bank holiday weekend. What a pleasure it was. Staff where extremely pleasant and helpful. We were staying in tents but where put up in the main caravan area as the electric points on the main camping field where already booked. The toilet block is excellent. Although only 2 showers and 2 toilets per male and female, we never had to wait for any ‘annoying’ length of time. Washing area would benefit from an additional sink, although we did not find it a big problem. Site pub, beer and food are also excellent. Nearby Ellesmere is a lovely place to visit. Besides the scenery, it boasts English, Indian & Chinese Restaurants, plus 4 pubs. Wrexham is only a short drive away and is obviously awash with all kinds of shops. There are also a few nearby 'car boots', if that is your thing. May I just add that the owners of the caravans that are left there permanently and come every weekend are also very friendly and helpful people. I can highly recommend this site.

Stayed at this site recently. The site is very clean with spotless shower and washing facilities. Plenty of gravel hard-standing with electricity and marked pitches. A small lake is on site for those keen on fishing. Located on the Shropshire/Wales border in quiet countryside with the occasional bit of noise from the main road. Great for Chirk Castle, Oswestry and Wrexham. The pub is a gem with home cooked food to suit all tastes. The excellent beer in particular the mild is a triumph. We'll be back.

Well what can I say! The trotting mare is brilliant! Excellent food served in their restaurant, a choice of different bitters n beers, atmosphere if fab. Very friendly staff ready to help with any queries. The site itself has ladies and gents shower blocks, toilets, washing up facilities, great fishing ponds. Just got back from a fantastic weekend there really relaxing just what you want, will certainly be back for the next bank holiday weekend to sunshine and knocking the froth off a couple of beers ha ha.! :O) Keep up the good work-

We visited for a long weekend over Easter and the site was pretty full. Nonetheless there was plenty of space for the grandchildren to play around and they took great interest in the duck ponds. However, (and I note the comments regarding cost) the facilities were somewhat limited. A shower block that had 2 showers each (sometimes without hot water) and 2 toilets was a bit short on availability. The lack of washing up facilities is a shame it is not beyond the wit of the owner to upgrade what has been put in and make sure that there is hot water etc. I know this is not France but to have to take away all your greasy dishes to wash at home is a bit much. The area is very good and we particularly enjoyed visiting Ellesmere - the Black lion does very good food at reasonable prices.

I want to leave a possitive review about our stay over the Easter weekend at The Trotting Mare, we had a really great weekend of course the fantasic weather helped! I have read negative reviews about this site, but I can confirm that shower/toilet blocks were clean, they have dishwashing facilities, rubbish was removed daliy & we found all staff really helpful. We ate at the pub/resturant & had a two course carvery for £9.95 the food was really nice, quick service & not overly priced! There was an Easter egg hunt for the children on sunday which was great fun & each child that completed the hunt got Easter egg. We will be visiting again!

Hi all, we found the site as described no promises that were not kept and a lot more improved than ten years ago (it used to be muddy). The people are pleasant that run the site and were eager to please us caravanners. You cannot ask for more than that. Those people who are unimpressed should look at sites carefully and make sure they know what to expect. E.g. If you require dishwashing sinks then make sure the site has them when you book. Common sense when you think about it. The pub has a nice atmosphere and I thought it was lovely that it was non smoking which is refreshing considering the ban is not yet in place, I applaude the owners for that. The food was nice and hot and the beer flowed nicely. To the owners well done for the improvements so far keep up the good work. To the moaners Rome was not built in a day.

We had a very enjoyable stay at the Trotting Mare caravan site from Feb. 15th - 18th as guests at the North Wales D.A camping and caravanning club rally . Over 30 vans attended the rally and the owner of the pub and site gary was very helpful and friendly. The facilities were good with a small toilet / shower block which was clean and well kept also plenty of hardstanding available for caravans although there are only four showers and four toilets available two of each for men and the women they are quite adequate for this small site We ate in the pub twice during are stay and the food was excellent and although the pub was very busy we were served in good time . overall a cracking little site to stay at I also notice that there have been one or two negative reviews by some members regarding the site fees perhaps these people should wake up and smell the coffee ! But there are always some habitual whiners when it comes to money
