Just spent a weekend at The Trotting Mare and had a lovely break. On arrival and throughout the owner could not have been more welcoming and helpful. He even reversed the caravan for me.
The site is set in the rolling farmland and is very well maintained. The facilities are very good, showers hot and everything kept very clean. Pub is great with excellent beers and lovely food.
We took the bikes and rode down the canal from Ellesmere to Colemere and the next day we rode the canal from Chirk to Llangollen.
But if you just want to relax and take it easy the site is ideal with lots of well manicured grass and a fishing pond. There is so much to see and do within 10 miles of the site that we have booked again for September.

Arrived on a blustery day but managed to pitch the tent quite easily. Really nice field and quiet at night which are pluses.
On the down side I thought the facilities were lacking as there is only one sink in the gents which meant that if it were busy washing your hands after visiting the loo was a problem.
The headroom at the pot wash is about 5' 6' which is another problem if you are of average height and have a lot of pots to wash (backache).
The site isn't that far from Wrexham and Oswestry but you do need transport.
Overall not the best I've visited but certainly not the worst, worth a visit if you intend camping in that area.

Just got back from a great weekend. Campsite was clean and tidy. Showers need to be updated. As the site was busy they became very cold in either of the showers. And also no heating was on brrr it was cold after a cold shower.
The owner of the site was friendly, if you were in his bar! But not when he had a problem with electrics. That was our problem apparently! We won't be going back in a hurry.
The site was quite far from any shops so being in a motorhome was a chore. The food in the pub was good but was quite expensive, we couldn't eat there every night.

Just had a lovely bonfire weekend at the Trotting Mare, it started at six pm on Saturday with a lovely meal, a choice of casserole dishes which were lamb, chicken curry, mushroom, and pork, rice and veg, jacket potatoes, you could go back as many times as you wanted for more, then at half eight went outside for fireworks, they were superb, best we had ever seen and we have been to plenty of displays very professional. After the fireworks we went back inside the pub and had a choice of desserts, black forest cake, lemon meringue, cheesecake, a choice of cheeses and crackers, it was £60 per unit for 2 adults for a 2 night stay on site and included the meal for two and firework display, excellent value for money, the site owner is very welcoming and friendly and made everyones night very enjoyable. Already looking forward to next years.

Been here before, had some good drinks with the landlord. Toilets very clean, site very tidy. The only downfall is the pub is not open until weekend, not open Sunday night. As there is nowhere close by you have to stay dry, or sit in your van and look at her indoors. Made friends with others on site will be back again soon. The lake is small I have seen fish caught. Elsmere is 3/miles away ideal if you have a caravan not if you have a big motorhome and have to put every thing away if you want to go out, but wouldn't put me off going there again as owner very friendly

We have stayed at the Trotting Mare on numerous occasions, and we have found Gary the proprietor to be very helpful and accommodating. The pub opening times are quite limited - Friday and Saturday night and Sunday lunch - might be nice to have a drink of a Saturday lunch time, the food, though was very good. The facilities are very clean and tidy but the showers were cold at times due to over use and only have two showers in each facilities. It is an adult only site, which is sometimes nice when you don't want unruly kids running round. Ideally located for shopping in Wrexham, Shrewsbury and Oswestry and the local villages of Overton and Ellesmere are only 5 minutes away.
Limited local taxis services, so advisable to book in advance if you require their service.
All in all a good site, which we use again and recommend to others.

Just returned from a lovely weekend on this site. On arrival we were met by the owner who could not have been more friendly or helpful, and we were left to choose our own pitch (hard standing or grass) we chose a grass pitch next to the duck pond.
Facilities on site were good, but it was a little walk to the grey waste point. We ate in the pub once and had a superb meal, the pub has only the dinning room open with a small bar in the corner, and opens Wednesday Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtime for a carvery (at least it did at the time we visited).
Please note this is an adult site and a sign at the site entrance states no children under 16. It was very quiet at night, just the sound of the odd cow. We would love to return but may have to wait a while as we have a one year old daughter.

We used this site as a base to go canoeing on the nearby River Dee, most other campsites in the area were closed at this time of the year and this one had the added bonus that they did not object to us lighting the wood burning stove in our tipi to keep warm.
The chap who owns it couldn't have been friendlier, coming out to greet us on the very cold evening of our arrival with several inches on slushy snow on the ground. Despite the fact he was wearing a thin jumper and none waterproof shoes he still insisted on walking around the site with me giving me the pros and cons of the various areas, he then proceeded to return with a shovel and broom and the offer of clearing a pitch for us.
Both nights he made the 7 of us dinner in the bar, all cooked from fresh, all coming out at the same time, two vegetarians options and all delicious with nice bottled beer to go with it.
The toilet block was clean and the hot shower well needed after the days paddling.
The few other people staying there were in caravans and seemed to be regulars, everyone was very friendly and fascinated by the fact we were canoeing in January and had a tipi!
We will return

This is our third visit in two months to this campsite and although I reviewed the facilities after my first visit, I now wish to comment on the food in the bar. I attended both the Christmas Fayre and Valentines Day events and I can honestly say that the food for both was absolutely superb. First class for price and quality and I would recommend it to anyone. So if you're like myself and enjoy a lovely clean site with a facility to enjoy a good meal this is definitely one of those sites.

We have just enjoyed a remarkable New Year break at this site. Facilities on site are clean and well maintained. We booked for the normal 3 night package but stayed an extra night. The New Year celebrations couldn't have been better. The choice of food was fantastic, hot and cold buffet which included, chilli, curry, beef and pork casseroles, salad bar including cold meats and smoked salmon. This was followed by dessert and cheese and biscuits and also included a lovely glass of bubbly to see the New Year in. We met so many really friendly caravanners that we intend returning to one of the other special events that Gary has planned throughout the year. We had snow, ice, rain and sunshine but nothing stopped us making the most of this exceptional venue. Thankyou Gary and staff for a great New Year.
