We booked this site a week before we went and had to book for 3 nights as it was a bank holiday weekend, although during our stay there were numerous tent users just there for 1 night. An attractive and quiet site with ducks running across the field during the day. Facilities were good with plenty of hot water, which is always welcome.
The pub is at the front and we knew where the reception was having read another review. Dogs are not allowed in the pub so we did not get to sample the food although other people did recommend it.
Ellesmere is 3 miles away and worth a visit and we also visited Llangollen and witnessed the Wild Wales bike ride.

Lovely site & owner very friendly & helpful. Showers newly refurbished & very good that they're including in the price of £16 per night.
The site is approximately equidistant between Overton & Ellesmere (both asbout 2.5 miles) where you can get your newspapers etc. Ellesmere as well as the mere (lovely) also has a small marina & a newly built Tesco next to it.
For anyone who likes to enjoy a drink/meal in the pub it is only open 3.5 days per week at the moment. Wednesday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday lunchtime for a Carvery.

A beautifully maintained campsite in a quiet, relaxing area. The facilities were spotless and the ducks extremely entertaining!
When my husband and I arrived on a Sunday afternoon the small pub / restaurant was quite busy and looked very inviting. We set up our tent, put everything in place and decided to have a drink for our efforts. We were very disappointed to find that all signs of life at the pub had disappeared - everything was closed until Wednesday!
One of the reasons we had chosen this campsite was the pub being on site, having a relaxing drink in the evening with only a short walk back to the tent sounded blissful! Nothing had told us (on the website or in their brochure)that it was only open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch time!
There is a silver lining to all this however! Luckily we do enjoy walking and on that Sunday set off on the country roads. We fortunately came to the village of Dudleston Heath and The Parish Pump. A delightful evening was spent in the company of the landlord and locals. Des, our host, even lent us a map of the area and very kindly gave us a lift back to the campsite!
If peace and quiet is required then this campsite is perfect, however do not expect a country pub but just a small dining area with very limited opening times.

Used this site as it was close to Ellesmere for the Food and Drink festival. The owner was very helpful - and 20 minutes after we'd arrived and chosen a lovely spot near the lake offered to drive us into Ellesmere - free of charge.
The toilets and showers were simple, but clean. Dish washing facilities there also. As it was adult only - it was quiet in the evening, and the grounds were spotlessly clean and tidy.
Ducks made their way around from van to van hoping for leftovers!
Fishing on site in 2 small ponds and seemed to be enjoyed by several visitors while we were there.
I wouldn't hesitate to visit again if needing to stay in the area.
Reasonable charge of £16 per night total for both of us in the van and this included the electric hook-up.

First stay at the Trotting Mare and all in all it wasn’t too bad at all.
Getting there was easy as it is located on a main road, but be careful with children and dogs, this is a 60mph road and many vehicles were flying past well in excess of that.
On arrival a sign instructs you to attend the reception but the reception itself isn’t signed, a guest directed us to the bar which is of course the reception. Once at the reception Gary was welcoming and gave us the park information sheet and receipt which from looking at appears should be posted out with your receipt prior to arrival, this would help! Also a £5 deposit is required for toilet keys which seems only fair; I don’t think you could replace them for the £5 deposit. The toilets are good, recently re-modernised by the look of them and never had a problem getting a shower or toilet even though there are only two of each. They were very clean and heated, could do with soap in them though. The waste water arrangements were different to other sites with grey water and chemical disposal going down the same hole, this is well fenced off and a hose is there to clean down but it isn’t well described, whilst I was happy disposing of grey water I was looking for a separate chemical point was, a fellow camper directed us to the same point. Bearing that in mind please have the consideration to clean down the drain site after disposing of your chemical toilet cassette, the facilities are there!
There are ponds on the site and fishermen doing there stuff but again be aware of young children, a few times I saw unaccompanied youngsters alone next to the ponds.
Children seem to enjoy themselves here but unfortunately there is no play park for the little ones!
Dogs are welcome and as a dog owner I think that’s great, not once did I see any mess and all dogs were on leads and pretty well behaved. For the first day we couldn’t find a place to exercise the dog, not on the site certainly. However if you leave the site there is a public footpath which follows the site fence line through farmers fields. The first field had cows in and so the dog was kept on his lead but in the second it was empty and just been cut so we let the dog go, just head for the small yellow arrow on the opposite side of the field.
On the site the pitches are very close, maybe even very very close. It didn’t bother us as our neighbours were also in a caravan which keeps the noise in and they were considerate. This couldn’t be said for all the guests though unfortunately, I know this isn’t a reflection of the site but we did have some people playing football at 8 am. The same miscreants then took it upon themselves to throw tennis balls around within feet of peoples tethered dogs who as you would guess wanted the ball.
On the site there is no shop for your consumables but I know from a sign that planning permission has been applied for to turn the old soft play area into a store, this would be a good addition for the site. Anything you need can be obtained from the store in Overton which is just a five minute drive away, or in the beautiful Ellesmere which is much bigger and has more shops, cash points etc (Gary will do cash back at the pub). Ellesmere is a must for a visit, it was our first visit and it’s an amazing place. The mere is huge and has boating, play park, and great walks. On a nice day you could spend the full day there.
The site is priced at about the right fee I believe, £14 per night for unit with hook up. Under 5’s no charge but I can’t understand why any extra guest over 5 is £5 per night. I have been camping for years and can’t recall any other site with such a fee for extra guests; the norm is £1-2. This could effectively price the Trotting Mare out of budget if you had a few children in the party, which would be a shame because I think it is worth a visit.

Kids loved it did a bit of fishing and doing nothing, lovely. As karina said shower was cold but the site was full, all in all a good site. The owners very helpful. If you head towards Ellesmere it is only 3 miles into a village with shops and a chippy.

Just come home from a very nice weekend break. I was in a caravan and our friends were in tents the owners found space so we could be together. We all had electric hook up.
The pub was very friendly and the food was very good.
The nearest shop was a car drive away, if you wanted to walk it is on a main road with no foot paths.
The site had a security barrier and you pay £5 deposit for the key to the Shower block.
Very well kept site with level grass for tents and hardstanding for caravans. The facilities were of a clean standard and looked new. There were two toilets and showers in both the ladies and mens. The only negative I can give is the shower did go cold quite quick.
Fishing in the pond was very popular by other campers.
We went to Bangor races on Saturday it was a great day out would recommend a visit.
The weather was a bit damp and drissly but this did not make any difference to our stay had a great time.
The owners are friendly and helpful.
All in all a good place to stay.

Well this is my second time at the Trotting Mare and I shall definitely be back Feb 2009.
A great little site, food and beer reasonably priced, had a 3 course meal on the Saturday night and coudn't fault it. The landlord Gary is a really nice guy, very helpful.
The showers and toilet were always clean and adequately heated and the site fees are very reasonable given that you can almost pay double on some commercial sites.
I notice some criticism by some people but then again you cant please everyone, but my advice is if you want 100% perfect facilities go and stay on a C.C Site and pay £20+ a night.

Ok as always the not so good bit !
Approach to the campsite is not well signposted. I would suggest some signage further along the road in both directions.
The pitches are in dire need of a purpose road putting in. There were old rusty rock pegs that could have done serious damage to the tyres of car and van found on the hardstanding. The hardstanding area is large and to access the grass area you have to drive through the hardstanding area. Watch out for those rusty rock pegs that get left behind. The two we found were disposed of.
Washing up area has no lighting or if it has it wasnt working.
Ok now the good bits.
The toilets are clean and tidy. There was no paper in them in the morning but was quickly remedy and for the entire weekend was kept up. The showers have good pressure and are very hot. Again push button ! heating is on a timer so check when the timers set for and shower time accordingly. It is clean and tidy full marks for this.
Washing up facilities get a mention. Very hot water. Be careful it is hot.
The pub serves local and national ales. Not being pub people we will struggle to give any real comments other than it is clean and tidy the reception was fine.
The evening meals menu is quite extensive for a rurally remote pub ! it appears reasonable value. We had the carvery menu, although not a large choice of veg it was well cooked, hot and certainly value for a carvery.
Overall it appears to be a reasonable place to stay. We met friends and that made a massive difference. We dont think we would go on our own but to meet up with friends for a weekends BBQ and pub meal then this is a reasonable site to go to.

Booked this site with a view of attending the New Years Eve party at the pub on site. The facilities are great, clean toilets and showers and enough space for all. The main caravan park was full but we and 2 other vans set up in the car park at the rear of the pub. We had full electric facilities by means of extentions provided by the owner Gary. We bought tickets for the party well in advance, which by the next day (nursing sore heads) we realised what good value for money it was. Included was a hot buffet, disco and Kareoke which went on through till 2.30 am. Credit has to go to all the bar and cooking staff and of course the owner Gary who made the night the success that it was, (nothing was to much trouble for him, he did everything to make the stay great.) Being from Liverpool of course we helped out a little on the karaoke , sorry for 'hogging the mike'. The finale at the end with all in the pub up on the dance floor singing 'unchained melody' was memorable. I think I can speak for all who attended to say what a fantastic stay we had. And no expensive taxis home, just 15 yards to walk. Thanks Gary, the young chef, (great food mate) the girls behind the bar and a few of the locals. Will be back again. We promise to give others a go at singing!Even you Gary.
