We stayed here August bank holiday weekend, found it hard to get on any other site because we were a group booking. When we arrived at the pub the owner showed us to our pitch on his tractor, the site was quite expensive for what you got 2 showers and 2 toilets each for ladies and men, no dish washing sinks, I had to resort in using the tap that the tourers use to fill there aqua roll. They had a fishing pond, no play area for the children, the pub was very expensive for meals. I do know that the showers are quite new but I think they should upgrade a bit more for the price they charge.

We've just got back from this site and will unfortunatley not be going again. Admittedly it was bank holiday weekend and you can expect a site to be a bit crowded but they really squeezed them in. There was no grass at all for the hard standings except for a little bit in the middle which ended up with two large trailer tents on it. There is a small toilet block with two toilets and two showers each (gents and ladies). Only one toilet in each had a toilet roll, the other didn't even have a holder. There was no soap and no means of hand drying. In the ladies, one toilet had no lid and the other one was broken. The toilet roll was replaced during the morning but had run out by tea time. There was no chance at all of getting a shower in the morning because of the number of people there. It wasn't cheap either - £15 for the pitch and £1.50 for the dog - £49.50 for a weekend - but we accepted that, because we had left it until the last minute and everywhere else was full. There didn't appear to be anywhere to walk the dog and we weren't given any information about where anything was - bins, waste point etc - and were just told to find a pitch. The girl in the pub who took the money couldn't have cared less when I mentioned the toilet rolls and shrugged and said she knew nothing about the camp site and immediately said that if I had any complaints I should contact the owner - and gave me his card. I got the impression she's heard it all before.

We had a good time at this relaxing site. Some pitches are hard-standing - bring good shoes as it is a bit uneven. There is a large field without hook ups which is prettier. The owner is not bothered what time you arrive and leave and this was much appreciated. The kids had a great time playing in the field and made lots of new friends. On the down side, the toilets are undergoing a refurbishment and need some hooks to hang your clothes. The dish washing sink needs to be plumbed in too.

After several visits to Trotting mare, I am really sad to say I will not be returning, they have removed all play areas so nothing to do for the kids. If you are Adults with no children you will love it here, but families I would not recommend. The fishing ponds are still lovely and the toilets are good. No washing up facilities and bit pricey £15.00 with hook up to receive no washing area. The owners are turning old ball pool into a gym/sauna. So will be ideal for Adults having relaxing weekend.

We visited this site purely for a relaxing weekend away after a very stressful few months and I would like to say that we succeeded in achieving just that. There are refurbishments ongoing at present ie toilets and showers are working, but as yet are not separated by the individual cubicles, so you have to lock yourself in to the shower block to avoid being walked in on. The new showers are fantastically powerful and really hot, a bit like a jet wash for your skin.
The pub on the site serves wonderful, if a bit pricey, meals and this is also undergoing a refurbishment over the next month, they are aiming at more restaurant style service and totally non smoking, the play barn that is attached to the pub will be closing at the end of May, never to reopen much to my nieces disgust.
If you are after a really quiet weekend with the chance of catching a few little fish (son caught 16 in 2hrs) then this is the place and once all refurbishments are finished we will not hesitate in another quiet weekends break at this site. The only thing that we would of found useful if you have young children would of been a laundrette if we were staying longer, but there is one in Ellesmere so not that much of a problem really.

June 2005 The location of the site is excellent. We were situated towards the back of the site away from the main pitches. The site is flat and has a small pond well stocked with fish. Fishing is free and the kids loved it. Hard Standing and grass pitches available, plenty of room on pitches.
The toilets and showers where housed in a small building located in the middle of the site. Whilst the building is of modern construction the inside of the building showers and toilets were below standard and in need of improvement. This is the only shortfall of the site and we are told work has been carried out to improve the facilities with major works planned for 2006 to completly refurbish the plumbing.
The site is located behind a nice family pub, with childrens play area and ball room.
In conclusion lovely site, Shower facilities a bit basic but to be refurbished. We all loved it particularly the kids and will be back.

June 2005 Visited this site on 3rd-5th. Found it very friendly, and our five kids were hardly spotted as the play area was fantastic!! They made friends. We were situated by some trees and near a tiny lake where you can fish.
Our lights failed and one of the campers were kind enough to lend us a lamp, so whatever your name is, Thanx.
The toilets where cleaned every day although their was a leak. The site had a pub on site which was really nice and the food was very good. Soda water was free so the kids where watered well.

May 2005 The location and layout of the site were excellent. Lovely little pond. The toilet/ washing facilities were abysmal and the gents was out of order the whole stay. The owner needs to sort it out badly. If he does I'll be back. The nearby pub was nice but the kids area smelled a bit. Again it would not take much to sort this out.

May 2005 No sign of any horse poo. Door of toilet OK. New owners are making some small improvements - re-gravelling of roadway & hardstandings currently underway. Pub, Restaurant, Play Barn etc all excellent as usual. There is a kebab/pizza shop in Ellesmere which will deliver to the site if you don't want to cook or use the restaurant.

June 2004 I thought this site was excellent I will be booking for the UKCampsite meet definately. Ok shops and towns are only accessible by car but at night you can have meal and leave kids in the ball pool, which is excellent they loved it.. Could do with a few more toilets and showers but it is only a small site..
