 We were welcomed and told we could pitch in the orchard, our favourite part. The receptionist looked us up and was pleased to see we were returning each year! As we were driving out that Erving to go to a friend's nearby for a meal we asked if there was anywhere we Should pitch but she was adamant that we could pitch anywhere as they have no gate closures. The pool was good, the small sanitaires we used in the orchard were clean. The price was the highest we paid all round France this year as ACSI isn't applicable in June. BUT we do love our end of holiday evening here so will return!

We stayed at this site for 4 nights last year & enjoyed it so used it for a stopover night this year. We arrived on 30/5 & the site had only just opened so we had a large choice of pitches in the orchard area so close to the newer toilet block. Good access in & out of the site. Good free wifi on our pitch. The toilets were clean & tidy. We used the bar & restaurant as it was our first night & it was nice albeit a little pricey for food. The reception staff all spoke good English & we're very pleasant & helpful. Even though the site had just reopened for the season, there was still fresh bread & croissants available in the morning. All in all a pleasant site.

We stayed at Chateau de Martragny for three nights following a two week holiday in the Vendee. The site was booked many months prior to arrival. The location could not be better for those choosing to explore this area of France eg Bayeux and Caen as well as the Normandy D-Day beaches. The approach to the Chateau and ultimately the main camping area is perhaps one of the most impressive you are ever likely to encounter. The dead-straight private drive, bordered on either side by mature trees, that leads from the road to the Chateau is at least 1/2 mile in length! As such, there is no encroaching noise from traffic at all.
The date of our arrival appeared to coincide with a wedding reception at the chateau. Our impression was that the chateau did not want the reception interrupted by the arrival of touring units as we were hastily directed towards the rear of the grounds and told to find a pitch. (The only apparent member of staff ran out from the chateau reception and quickly ushered us around to the rear of the property before we had even stepped out from our car). Although understandable under the circumstances, having spent over 6 hours travelling to reach the site we did feel slightly awkward. Not quite as awkward, perhaps, as the wedding guests who took a stroll around the grounds in their best suits and dresses and who wandered around the orchard camping area admiring the different units. Very surreal!
Although there were ample (large, level and shaded) pitches on either side of the driveway, these appeared to be kept free of units (again, because of the wedding?). We were directed to an area within which we found four of five free pitches, most of which were of a similar size (although varying in shape) and, thankfully, one larger one that would accommodate our 26ft tourer. The pitches are all grass and I believe all have electric hook-up. Most appeared to be reasonably flat and level, although the location of apple trees in the orchard meant that those with a motor-mover would find access onto any pitch; those without may struggle to gain access to some of them.
Having set-up, we went back to reception where we were warmly welcomed by the (apparently only) member of staff who had earlier directed us around to the rear of the Chateau. It was then that we discovered that the Chateau, the courtyard, bar and restaurant were all out of bounds (again, probably due to the wedding) and that the restaurant had been closed for several days prior to arrival and was not expected to open until the day before we left. The nearest place to eat, the assistant helpfully offered, was Bayeux, some 10km away.
I have no idea whether the Chateau had attempted to call us prior to our arrival that the dining facilities would be closed during our planned stay, but judging by the reaction of other people who arrived after us, I suspect not.
We were given free wi-fi access but reception can be patchy, especially the further away from the Chateau you are located. Our daughters mobile 'phone picked up the signal reasonably quickly whilst on our pitch but our i-pad struggled on one day to connect at all.
The stay had not got off to the sort of start we had hoped for.
That said however, we were immediately charmed by the ambience of the site. Very cosmopolitan with at least half a dozen nationalities encountered on-site. The tranquility of the site coupled with the setting quickly soothed away any misgivings and all of us agreed that we would happily return to the site in the future.
There is a hard-court tennis court and a lovely well-heated outdoor swimming pool (that was warmer than the pool we had used in the Vendee!). The grounds are extensive and well maintained with not a hint of litter anywhere. There is also a lovely ornamental fishing pond to which residents may cast a line. With ducks roaming freely around the pond it would be a very enjoyable way to while away a few hours.
There is an obviously new, purpose-built wash/shower/ablutions block that resembles more a conservatory than a traditional brick-built outhouse, that is both warm, spotlessly maintained and together with the existing facilities that have been retained, offered ample opportunity to ensure that queueing for the use of any of the services is unlikely; even in peak season.
There is a small shop on-site that offers the basics should you find that you are in need of replenishment.
The poor girl who worked on reception (and was dealing with the wedding reception guests) also staffs the shop and apart from the chef, bartender and waitress/kitchen support lady, who we met whilst dining in the restaurant, we saw no sign of any other staff.
We managed to eat in the restaurant on the final evening and was rather disappointed that most of the menu items were unavailable. In the end we settled for Salmon fillets with side salad. The food could not be faulted, either in its appearance, taste or service. We put the lack of options down to the wedding reception and that we were heading towards the end of the touring season.
Overall, the experience was not unpleasant nor tainted. We put the circumstances down to coincidence and will happily stay at this site again. We feel it wrong to mark down the Chateau on the basis of this 'one-off'? event and so have graded the 6 questions accordingly. Certainly, whilst we were there, there was a friendly ambience around the site. Subdued lighting allows reasonable unaided access through the orchard at night without being intrusive. By 9 -9. 30pm most evenings the site was extremely quiet, with guests showing respect for one another by not playing loud music or playing ball games where they ought not.

Stayed here for 4 nights to explore Normandy and it is perfectly situated for Bayeux and all of the D-day beaches.
The site itself was fine, we were situated in the top right hand corner and just about had room for caravan, awning and car on the pitch. Swimming pool was basic but strangely had an extremely deep section (2. 4m!) in the middle with shallow at both ends, didn't see the need for this as it made it difficult for kids with little or limited swimming skills to enjoy the small pool properly.
The new toilet block behind the bar complex was lovely but not many showers here, more in a separate block next door.
We ate in the restaurant which was adequate, there was also a simple takeaway menu, basically burger and chips. Small shop on site which seemed to stock mostly alcohol and chocolate! Can get fresh baguettes etc.
The best thing about the site is the surrounding area - we enjoyed a day at Cabourg which has a lovely seafront and beach, The Bayeux Tapestry Museum and several of the D-day beaches in particular Omaha and the American Cemetery there - this was absolutely amazing, very humbling and emotive. Would consider returning to explore the area more.

We were very lucky to get a pitch here after having to leave another site unexpectedly. We only phoned up the night before and the nice lady on reception managed to get us a pitch in the Orchard near the swimming pool. Our pitch was quite big enough for our Ducato motorhome but other people did not have the same amount of room, being very crammed in next to their neighbours. Pitches at the top of the site near to the reception were a bit shaded and didn't seem to get anywhere near as much sun as further down behind the office block. Didn't use the swimming pool, but it looked excellent and was used by plenty of people. The fishing pond is crammed with thousands of small common and mirror carp about 1lb to 1. 5lb and if you don't catch here you are doing something wrong. (Tip - use sweetcorn not bread and you will bag up every time. ) The toilet/shower block is the best we have seen - brand new with loads of choice of WC's, showers and hand basins. Only downside is it is quite pricey for the site fees but it is super clean. There is plenty to do and see in the area, especially if you are in to WWII history.

Having been a bit disappointed two years ago when we stayed here we were pleasantly surprised this time! We picked out pitch and chose the orchard, next to the swimming pool. The shower and toilet blocks were very clean and adequate for the numbers there. The site wasn't full. The swimming pool was fine and the plastic grass was very successful around the edges!
The shop was pricey but useful to have one. It was a pleasant site for our last night in France.

We stayed for 4 days / 3 nights during the D-Day 70th Anniversary celebrations.
The site was completely full with additional campers staying on the overflow area near the front entrance.
Our pitch with electric hook-up was on the avenue running up to the chateau.
We went to reception on arrival and were greeted cheerily by the receptionist and given a map showing where we would find our pitch. She explained where the two toilet / shower blocks were located and explained about the opening hours of the bar, restaurant and shop.
The pitch numbers are clearly marked on the trees and we found ours without trouble. The pitches are situated amongst the trees which provided welcome shade when the weather was hot and it was very hot for most of our stay. One of the downsides to the shade though is that it slowed down the drying process after the overnight rain that we experienced. This left the clay soil very wet and it was difficult not to traipse the mud into the tent.
The electricity supply failed during the night of rain which we traced to the main breaker inside the supply box. It was easily reset once we checked that our neighbours hadn't tripped it deliberately.
On the first morning the closest toilet / shower block had a blockage in the toilet waste pipe. This caused the cubicles to be unusable although the urinals and showers were OK. This block was clean and well maintained for the rest of our stay once the blockage was cleared which was done very quickly after it was reported.
The other toilet / shower block at the rear of the main building is of a very high standard. It looks brand new and has automatic doors at the entrance. It was beautifully clean and well maintained throughout although, on the first morning, the showers were cold which necessitated walking back to the first block.
The shop has a limited stock but has the basics and is open from early till quite late. The bar was very busy when we visited and it took a while to get served. The food looked good and we heard positive comments about it but again the wait caused us to decide to eat 'at home'.
The campsite is on the edge of a small village which didn't appear to have any bars, shops or restaurants. It is only a 7 - 8 minute drive into Bayeux so this would be the best choice as it has all the services of a large French town / City.
Overall, the site is very good and we will return if we are in the area and would recommend it to others.

This was the first time I had ever towed a caravan abroad and only the second ever I had towed any distance.
We arrived in the late afternoon and were shown our pitch. After a while we asked if we could move because our power cable would not stretch to the supply, that was no problem and we chose another. The staff were very helpful and spoke english. The toilet block, shower and washing up facilities were very good with plenty of hot water. We did not use the pool as the weather was too cold. The bar and grounds are very pleasant and well kept. The ideal place is the area away from the road at the rear of the chateau. The whole place seems very friendly and the other caravan owners even helped us put up our awning as we were making a complete hash of it!
There is plenty of D-Day stuff to see and Mont St. Michael is not too far. Supermarkets etc are quite close and Bayeaux is well worth a visit. All in all a good site and well situated. We want to visit Normandy again next year and will stay there again.

Firstly I would like to say how much we enjoyed this site, so much so we cut our week in Vendee short to return! However we had two different experiences.
The first week we arrived early evening on a Saturday in August after a horrible journey down from Calais (school boy error!) The site was very busy but we paid the balance and went off to pick our pitch.
The campsite has two areas to pitch in, the paddocks and the drive. We chose a pitch in a corner of one of the paddocks close to the new, fantastic toilet block.
We spent a glorious week here among some lovely (mainly Dutch) people. A very friendly and laid back atmosphere with people enjoying themselves but total quiet by 11, perfect! The pitches in the paddocks are quite small and mostly irregular shapes but I never felt cramped (and we have a large tent).
The pool is quite small but never really crowded. It has a very shallow end that is separated from the main pool which was perfect for my 3 year old and the main pool has shallow areas at both ends with very steep slopes down to a 2. 4m deep middle (it catches you out!)The view from the pool up to the Chateau across the pond and garden is wonderful!
There are two play areas, one small and shabby and one fairly new decent sized one that kept my two amused for hours.
The shop isn't cheap but then when are site shops? Loads of lovely baguettes, Pain au Chocolate and other pastries available as well as other staple items. Bayeaux is just a few miles away and we always found the Carrefour quiet, cheap and even friendly!
We used the bar / takeaway once. The beer was expensive as was the take away food. The food was really disappointing. I ordered a hamburger and chips, The hamburger was a microwave job you pick up for a quid! Oh well, just didn't use it again!
The electric hook ups are all old French style and sometimes hidden in bushes (ours was 6 feet back in a copse!), the shop sells adapters for 14 euros so make sure you bring one with!
The site is great for the Normandy beaches and museums. If you use the rear entrance to the site then you are only 8 miles from Arromanches.
We left the following Saturday and took the trek down to St Jean du Mont. Well, the sites down there could not be more different. Loud, hectic, unfriendly place where the traffic is a nightmare. We took four days of it and returned to Martragny!
This is where we saw a differnt side to the site. There were no paddock pitches left so we had to stay on the drive. The pitches are bigger but as you have the main road to the site in front of you the security we had for the kids in the paddock was gone.
The toilet block by the drive was, well, grim to put a positive spin on it! It doesn't look like it has been cleaned properly this year and the showers were very small. So we took walks to the new block! In the new block everybody cleaned the showers and toilets after using them. Squeegee's were provided and used every time as were toilet brushes. It seemed like as the area was new and looked after so everybody bought into that. A completely different story in the other block.
A lot of people use this site as a transit stop and if that was how I was going to use it then the drive pitches would be fine however if I turned up for a week and I had to stay there - well I don't think I would last!
Overall though a great site, always pretty full but never feeling that way. I will go back but I will try to get a decent pitch reserved if I am going for a week! A little expensive for what it is though!

I cannot over recommend this campsite to you.
It is a large campsite with all the facilities you would expect, but it still has an intimate appeal. Even though the site was busy it was very quiet.
The pitches were large enough and the shower and washing facilities clean and tidy.
The only small possible niggle was that the service was slow in the bar on occasion, but roll with it and relax - you are on holiday!
Overall this is one of the the campsites I have ever been to
