We visited the site as a base in Normandy but only stayed one night as we thought the standard was very bad. We have stayed at Castel sites before and found them to be of a good standard, this is not true of this site. The sanitary facilities were poor, the toilets dirty, the showers cold and the standard of cleanliness throughout was poor. The approach road may look impressive but it is badly rutted and the site is very expensive, 43 euros 66 cents for the night for 3 adults. There is no security whatsoever on the site. We did not see the swimming pool or the children’s play ground so can not comment.

Pay by camping cheques in low season its far cheaper!

The location and the entrance to the site is visually impressive, with a long drive up to the 'house' with trees and plenty of greenery. The site is split up into small areas which makes you feel that you are in a smaller site. The reception area /shop was well stocked with information and provisions, although some items were over twice the price of supermarkets. The service was prompt and efficient, however with only one person covering both areas delays of 15 mins were common at peak movement times, which was not good.

The facilities for children are good and the pool was so tempting we went in every day, even when it was raining(warmer in than out)

Good location for exploring this part of Normandy: Bayeux 15 mins, Caen 20 mins, Aramanche 20 mins, Rouen 45 mins. Although in the middle of nowhere (no shops in village)you have a major road on your doorstep, a huge supermarket (Cora) about 10 minutes away and gorgeous countryside.

The bad bits:- the showers, wash hand basins, laundry sinks and the dish washing sinks in the main block adjacent to the bar and reception areas ran out of hot water by 9-15 three times in 6 days (low season!)they did not know what had happened, the toilets weren't usable two days and odd ones were blocked at other times (reception informed and they were fixed by the following morning, blockages cleared reasonably promptly). The shower cubicals are also small in this block, washing a child with you cannot be done. Did not see any baby washing facilities.

Disabled facilities are located in the toilet block adjacent to the drive, so if you want room to move when you shower these are the ones for you and the normal ones are twice the size of those in the old blocks.

There are no hard standings and we found that our steadies had to be adjusted daily and that the wheels had sunk into the grass by 2', a motor home put wedges under wheels to level it up, only to find that they were fully embedded in the ground in the morning.

The Chateau also looks very tired and unloved! Not like other Chateau camp sites we have stayed at.

We felt that the place does need updating and we have stayed at 3 star sites that we felt were better than this 4 star one.

We will probably not be staying at this site again, because of the toilet/hot water situation. We are on Holiday after all!

My husband and I stayed here for a week in Summer. We came up from Brittany to look around the D-Day beaches and memorials. The campsite is beautiful - centred around a charming 18th century chateau and within easy reach of the beaches and the Bayeux tapestry. The staff were helpful and the washrooms and toilets were spotless (we saw a professional cleaning team at work at least twice a day!). Unlike the previous reviewer we were not disturbed by any 'early morning' cockerel. Perhaps we were far enough away from him or maybe the owners have taken note and removed the little beast! Would definitely recommend this site to anyone looking for a bit of charm and tranquillity whilst researching the D-Day area.

Arrival was impressive. A long drive to a typical French Chateaux. Reception was fine and very efficient. We were staying just overnight, having travelled up from La Rochelle to catch the morning Ferry from Caen. We were allowed to swap pitches so we ended up on the main driveway, where the pitches were much more open and spacious - probably not ideal for young children as it is the main drive in and out.

A walk around the site suggested that the other end, by the pool, was quite cramped for space. I am glad with a larger van didn't have to squeeze in. The space on the main drive allowed you to almost have car and caravan ready to pull off in the morning with minimal fuss. The electricity supply was the euro connectors and state of the boxes suggests the wiring was dated and may struggle to pass UK safety tests. It worked and polarity on the box we chose was not reversed.

The toilet blocks were a let down. Smelly, basic, poorly maintained and cleanliness. The block in the woods off the main drive were poor quality and small and dated. None of the toilet blocks were of usual Castel standards. We didn't have long to get to know the site. It was very easy reach of the tapestry at Bayeux (10 minute drive). 40 minute drive to the Port on a Monday morning. Cheap diesel at Intermarche at Bayeaux - Credit card machine on a Sunday.

Some people mentioned the road being noisy, Have to say didn't notice it, although very handy to get back on the main routes, and we had left before the main rush hour.

A handy overnight stop and it served a purpose. Would I go back again? Overnight - Yes. Any longer than one night? Definitely not. I am sure there has to be better in the region.

The cockerels are allowed to freely roam around the site 'cock-a-doodle-dooing' waking you up every morning between 4am and 5am! They are very loud and extremely annoying.

Also, the toilet and shower blocks are very basic. There are no sinks and soap within the WC block. If you go for a shower, you will have hardly any room to change and move around.

On a positive note, the site is within a reasonable driving distance of Bayeux, Caen and the surrounding D-Day tourist attractions. The staff are friendly enough, the restaurant is ok and there is free WiFi. The kids have a basic playground, a swimming pool and a tennis court, although 5 Euros per hour for tennis is quite expensive.

Despite the few positive aspects, the cockerels really spoil the site, so for that reason I will definitely not be coming back and would urge caution for those considering coming to the site. That's quite a shame really.

Last stayed here many years ago when our children were little and they still had us on records! They offered us choice of pitches where we had stayed so long ago! Chose pitch next door to gateway to swimming pool in orchard which was lovely, so convenient for pool and the toilet and shower block, which was spotless and showers were hot. Many Brits on way down or back to ferries, convenient for Caen and Cherbourg. Would aty again. Takes camping cheques out of season so good value for money. Shop has basics, no fresh veg or fruit. Bar looked inviting but didn't use it.

A nice site, just a good distance from Calais on our way to Brittany.

The toilet block next to us was clean and tidy, very French,a walk around the site was a pleasure we met some nice people, some use this site either going to or coming fron the Caen ferry only 25k away.

The staff where great helping us,when we called back on our way to Calais with finding a garage that could get us some new tyres after a blow out on the French motorways.

The Restaurant and bar was a little basic but it was still nice to have a small drink sitting in the sun shine at the end of the day.

With the D-Day beaches very close to their seams lots to do.Their are some big supermarkets close by for a big shop, we got some of the basics from the shop on the site.

A nice site and we will use it again.

We arrived on the last week of the season, first impressions wow! lovely setting, very nice English couple made is welcome. BUT had 2 cold showers, complained and the next day it was better, the showers were grim, OK it was the last week of the season, but our money is as good as anyone elses (not cheap) for the last week. The shower walls had pink slime on them, we were in the part where there were 4 showers + 2 toilets, tried the main block near shop, not much better. We had a meal on the Thursday evening our last night and the chef's, we felt like we were being pushed out of the door. This is our 5th Castels' site and the worst, a great shame as a fab setting

We stayed here last year for 2 weeks in August. The site is right next door to a very busy road which we were a little disappointed about although it was then easy access to the surrounding area. We were given a pitch on the drive leading up to the Chateau which was disappointing as with three kids and the tent pitched on the side of the road we felt this was not the ideal place. We asked to move but were not allowed/were not offered any other pitches. During our stay as described in the other posts the toilet block wasn't the best although the smaller blocks towards the pool were a lot better. The washing & drying facilities were good as we used them most days due to the terrible weather. The surrounding area was brill lots to see and do if of course you are interested in history/wars. My parents were booked into staying in the chateau which to be honest was grim and in the end they stayed with us in the tent. All in all we have stayed in other castels sites and this one was a little disappointing. Great for a stop over of a few days but wouldn't want to do 2 weeks at it again.

Stayed at this site for 8 nights in August 2010. The women's toilets stank for the whole time we were there. There was no soap in any of the toilet blocks, a tiny wash basin with cold water in the women's and nowhere to wash your hands at all in the gents. The showers were never particularly clean.

The 'heated' swimming pool was freezing cold. The free wi-fi was broken for all but the first day of our stay. The on-site shop was massively over-priced. Great location, beautiful-looking site but just not up to scratch on facilities or cleanliness and definitely over-priced.
