We first stopped here for one night in July 2008 on our way further south and always said we liked the site and would come back again one year and spend longer. Aug 2010 we booked in for a week this is a great site with so much to do, the pool was warm although I don't think its heated, plenty of sun loungers around the pool.

Tennis courts, a Big childs climbing frame, crazy golf, pedal go carts and a fishing lake which when I first saw the lake it looks like a big garden pond, there were lots of small fish jumping about. However when my 15 year old son put his line in within about 10 mins he had caught a large fish which nearly bent his rod double, within 3/4 hour fishing he had landed 6 large fish.

The site is medium in size and most of the pitches are large, we have a 9 berth tent and we fitted in easily, although we were right by the kids play area, I thought it might be noisy but by 9.30pm it was quite.

The pub/cafe is good the food is ok, but everything with chips, but do you expect 5* food on a camp site very fast service and always with a smile. There are plenty of toilets and showers always very clean and plenty of hot water no matter what time of day or night you go.

One tip if there are more than about 5 showers in use at one time, wait because what are power showers with only a few in use, do end up just dripping if they are all in use at the same time, as I found out one time.

Off site there is plenty do in nearby Bayeux and the Normandy Landing beaches are all close by. All in all a good site would we go back yes we would.

I first visited this site over 20 years ago and the memory of the idyllic setting drove me to take my family back there - it is just as beautiful. It is just about the most spectacular scene welcoming you with a tree lined driveway up to a magnificent manor house.

We stayed at the top of the main driveway, closest to the house. The pitch was enormous, with a water tap and electricity very close by. The toilets were conveniently just across the drive in the woods.

The children loved it - the swimming pool, play areas, go-karts and mini golf were all tested and passed! Roaming in the woods was also popular. We tested the takeaway food which was extremely tasty, though not very large portions and not any cheaper than the restaurant prices.

The local area is a must visit for all, rich in history, culture, cheese and cider! We did visit the Cora hypermarket, but slightly closer is Intermarche, if you turn right when you reach the Bayeux periphique. Definitely worth the journey rather than paying site prices.

The campsite was in general very peaceful. However, the farmer was harvesting on two nights we were there and the sound of the combine harvester a few feet away from the tent is by no means peaceful!

The facilities were the site's key weakness, and this is a real shame. We found them to be well below the standard of other Castel sites, and this was mostly down to cursory cleaning. In the block we used, there is a shower right in between two toilets and therefore the toilet floors were very frequently badly flooded.

The free wifi was a welcome bonus, although we could only actually get it whilst sitting on the stone bench under the tree to the right of the chateau.

Overall, an excellent location, outstanding setting and reasonable facilities.

The date above was actually our last visit to Martragny - we've also been three times before and will, after a one year break for reasons of childbirth, be returning in 2012.

Ok let's get the 'possible' negatives out in the open before we begin: this isn't a cheap site by any means - around 50% more expensive than sites with comparative facilities that we've stayed on in the UK; it's not right by the sea - realistically about a 20 minute leisurely drive from the nearest beach; it doesn't have the bells and whistles of some more 'commercialised' and 'Brit friendly' sites.

Ok now the real review:

Martragny is possibly the most pleasant, marvellously understated, laid back and generally congenial site we've used. Hence our return for the fifth time in August. We've tried other sites in Normandy but keep returning to this one. By the end of the season we will have clocked up around two months on this site in total, so I guess we can claim to know it well.

Facilities include generous pitches over the majority of the site (most if not all with hookup), two decent sized and one small toilet/shower blocks (never excessive cueing), swimming pool, tennis courts, play area, fishing pond (lake would be a bit of an overstatement), bar/restaurant, laundry and shop.

The site and facilities are well maintained, the shop is well stocked with essentials (though sometimes quite expensive - not unusual for any campsite), the fries from the restaurant are wondfull as are the croissants and fresh bread from the shop each morning.

The site is perfectly situated for exploring this part of Normandy: Bayeux 15 mins, Aramanche 20 mins, Caen 20 mins, Port En Besin 25 mins, Hon Fleur 45 mins, Rouen 45 mins. Although in the middle of nowhere you have a major road on your doorstep, a huge supermarket (Cora) about 10 minutes away and gorgeous countryside all around.

The site is very cosmopolitan and free from the scourge of over-anglicisation. We've enjoyed the company of French (obviously) Dutch, Belgian, Danish, German, Irish, Swiss, oh and one or two Brits while camping here.

If the idea of an overcrowded, over busy, over British, over commercialised site is your idea of Hell, but you want good facilities, a good location and a friendly, laid back camping experience, then give Martragny a go. Chances are you won't regret it.

We stayed here for five nights at the end of a three week visit to France on our way back from the Dordogne.

We were excited about the prospect of staying here having viewed the website, but were shocked at our pitch upon arrival which was extremely small and the whole site felt very tightly packed. Once pitched, there was barely enough room for our small porch awning and car. We felt being packed this tightly this could be dangerous in case of fire.

Apart from this, other disappointments included dirty, smelly toilets and showers and the immediate surroundings of the site, which is very close to the dual carriageway just beyond an industrial/retail area. Having said that, the site is close to Bayeux and Caen and is well placed for visiting D-day beaches.

Washing and drying facilities are good, the bar is in an attractive barn with pool tables and wifi. We didn't use the pool, but it didn't look half as big in real life as it does on the website. The shop was well stocked, but expensive. We didn't make use of the restaurant.

Staying here has taught us a lesson, we now go to Google Earth to check out the immediate surroundings of a site.

As you can see, we wouldn't stay here again.

I agree with the previous comments. On arrival this campsite is very impressive. We were able to check out all available pitches which was a nice touch.

The restaurant/bar had limited choice but the food was good on the occasions we ate there.

The big let down for this site is the toilet/shower facilities. The ladies toilets closest to our tent consisted of 6 cubicles. They were so close together you couldn't open the toilet door if someone was coming into the block. They also had a constant smell. Cleaning was very poor. The showers were tiny with limited shelves/hooks and it was impossible to shower with my child. It is such a shame as this site has such potential.

Although perfectly situated for sightseeing (and we did have a great holiday) we definitely wouldn't return to this site.

This was our second short stay, the first was in August 2008 when we stopped with our 2 young daughters in a tent for 4 nights. We loved this sight so much that we returned for a 5 night stay at the end of August 2009, this time with our caravan. We noticed that the site was far quieter this year.

The site covers quite a large area and in some places it did does appear that the pitches were quite close. However, there are some very quiet and private pitches with tall hedges separating each pitch. The shop is rather expensive, but is well stocked. The restaurant is also good, and there is a local pizza/cafe about half a mile out the site. Fantastic location, pool is fine and located in the gardens of the Chateaux. We found the facilities clean and well maintained. My daughters loved playing tennis and swimming. Would we return for a 3rd visit.Yes we would in a flash.

Had an enjoyable 14 nights on the site. We had pitch 15 was was located behind reception across from the toilet and shower block. The site is only 7 miles from nearest beach. We drove from Calais which is 240 miles away and took around 4 hours driving. Tolls were around 30 euros.

The hookup electric polarity is same as Uk sites but was only 6 amps. Huge Cora supermarket 15 minutes drive which stocks everything you need. The campsite is expensive especially the shop prices. We found that the wifi for our daughters laptop was totally useless. We were charged 2 euros an hour for it and could never get a signal longer than 5 minutes and we were not the only ones to complain but the English owners seemed not too bothered and in our opinion a little distant.

The showers were very good but we found the toilet block behind reception always had a horrible toilet smell and it was not just the gents. The cleaners came from a contract company and did just the bare minimum which was not enough. We loved the hens and cockerels and watched one hen look after 9 baby chicks but lost one during our stay. Watch the cockerels and larger hens all roost in the trees next to the washing up sinks its quite comical to see as are the calls of the cockerels 1 or 2 sounded like they had sore throats. The pool was great with plenty of sun loungers and not too cold. The fishing was really just an ornamental pond and not really ideal for fishing in my opinion. There were 4 toilet blocks around the site though we only visited 2

.All in all a great site which was quiet after 10pm, the only noise was from the constant banging of toilet and shower doors which if you pitched nearby can become quite annoying. A bonus for us was we had great weather during our stay.We took the children to Feistyland which was a waste of money, hardly any rides but maybe was ok for under 5`s.

Plenty of beaches nearby.I would visit again but not stay as long as 2 weeks on the same site was a little too long. If driving from Calais the drive over the Pont De Normandie bridge is great.

We have stayed on several castels sites over the years and they are usually excellent. This time we were disappointed. The toilets were not cleaned properly while we were there and were quite dirty by the time we left.

Some of the pitches were really small, and despite being in a tent we were sited right next to the sewage works, which whirred on and off all night. I also agree with the previous review - the shop was very expensive, even considering the exchange rate. They charged 2Euros to freeze 1 ice block.

The other 4 star sites we stayed in had freezers in the washing up areas that were free to use. We stayed for 3 nights - we had actually booked for 5, but couldn't stand it any longer!

2nd campsite of 3 we stayed at in July 2009.

On arrival it looks pretty impressive and lovely - driving down the long road to the chateaux. Tents are pitched on either site without hedges on the long road in, as you get nearer to the chateaux and reception there is a large footie field and then a few hedged pitches to the right. Reception friendly enough but were given no info on arrival (the last site had given us a booklet with site rules and info about bins, facilities etc - as a result we couldn’t find the chemical disposal point or the bins at first.) We pitched on the pitches directly behind reception but at the bottom near to the very small kids park and the tennis court. The pool area is behind a wall / gate right next to park. Wasn’t particularly delighted with the pitch as we spent 4 days looking at the back of someone’s tent and in close proximity of the others on either side BUT was pwerfect to watch the kids on the park– I wished we’d have asked for another pitch but it was so packed, we didn’t bother. The layout of this site would suit some people , but I like space and to see the views of the site rather than being squashed next to others – BUT , in defence, we did ask for a pitch near to the park and pool and this what we got. The pitches on the other side of the wall (on the left of the chateaux seemed to have a little more space). One more gripe (sorry!) is that the grass hadn’t been cut and was quite long on our pitch.

Toilets were standard, could have done with more cleaning throughout the day when it rained and showers were nice and very warm. Bar was ok with basic menu if the day …. With chips. We only ate once there. There is a laundry and washing up facility

Shop seemed well stocked but expensive for some items such as hams, cheese etc. We just bought drinks, milk and baguettes there. There is also a freezer for ice packs. Also had some nice gifts on display. The pool wasn’t heated and very cold – didn’t bother my kids much but a no no for me!. My hubby commented that it should be bigger for the size of the site as it got really crowded in the day. The small square lake was great for the kids to fish. We bought a fishing rod/ line from the site shop for 3 Euros and this was so much fun! This was lovely in the evening and we even caught a few fish!

Very handy for Bayeux and Arommanches D –Day beaches. Massive super market a few miles away too. I can see why so many people would love this site – great location and very relaxed but I like Le Brèvedent more for the surroundings, site layout, warm welcome and things to do etc…

Just can’t quite make my mind up if I actually loved this site or not and think that a different pitch would have helped. On reflection, my review sounds a bit of a whinge BUT overall it was a lovely site and very good if you have children…do try it - it is in such a peacful surrounding and everyone seemed to be asleep by 11pm.

This site was fantastic! Would definitely go back there again. Great location, away from the main road and feels out of the way, which is great. Nice and peaceful! But still in a great location for all the museums and sites.

The drive up to the chateaux was beautiful in itself! Its a long road (which was once used as a runway during the war) and the view is fantastic!

Pitches were a great size - nice and spacious, even if your in a caravan, tent or motorhome!

We were behind the chateaux, away from the main toilet blocks, but there was a smaller block near by. The facilities were kept very clean! As someone else mentioned on here, the sinks are in the same cubicle as the shower - which does make a nice change!

An english couple run the site, who were lovely! Very welcoming and helpful.

There is a swimming pool and a fishing lake at the bottom of the site, which will entertain the children. There is also a small shop on site, which sells the basics. There is a supermarket, just a short drive away.
