Incredibly friendly welcome to the site on arrival and all appeared to be good.
We were booked onto a hard standing and found that it had probably seen better days. After a night of rain and storms we found the ground soaked inside the awning and out due to water running off of the main field and onto our pitch like a small river. In addition due to this car sank overnight and I had to be towed off by a fellow camper with a 4x4.
Toilet/shower block is very old and in dire need of modernisation. Shower head did not fit in holder and the cubicle itself had some sign of mould on the wall. One of the toilets had a broken seat, which was met with the response of, 'I'm fed up fixing it and it being broken so I'm not bothering now. '
This site has great potential due to it's location, but it has just been overlooked in the modernisation programme. This resulted in a poor experience I am sad to say. C & CC Club need to invest in better amenities block, and look at improving drainage around the edges of the site, something which could be achieved really easily.
Sadly I cannot recommend this site.

This was a very well maintained site with good quality facilities - a little rough around the edges due to age, but very clean which is most important. There were no super service pitches available which was a shame. There was a selection of grass and hardstanding - I was on grass which was well maintained and drainage was fine. There is a playground and plenty of space. The site is accessed along a country lane which is easily drivable with a tourer. Access to East outer London areas is easy via the M25 although I would advise avoiding the country lane that leads towards the M25 as this held me up in a traffic queue for about 20 minutes due to badly timed traffic lights. Although an urban area, it feels very secluded as it's rural in nature around the campsite.

I really enjoyed my short stay at this site. It's basic, clean, quiet and functional. There were plenty of toilets and showers which were spotlessly clean. It rained and rained but didn't cause any problems as the drainage was good. We arrived after the campsite office was closed but there is a bell to get attention. Staff and other campers were very friendly.
This campsite, with not being very far from the M25, it is very convenient for Southend on Sea which is roughly 30 -40 minutes away and London. The only downside is negotiating Brentwood's weird town centre. Highly recommended

Visited this site over the April / Easter bank holiday weekend and stayed for three nights.
Initial impressions upon arrival were positive although this isn't a typical C&CC site, it has a more rustic casual feel to it. The wardens were very friendly, gave us a choice of pitches and showed us to the one we selected and left us to it (no hanging about making sure we were millimetre perfect on our hard standing).
This is a pretty quiet site, it has two fields - East and West. We were in the East field which I think is the slightly smaller one out of the two. I've read reviews that state the drainage is really poor, as we didn't have much rain I can't confirm or deny this but everything appeared ok whilst we were there. The children's play area is sandwiched between the main office and the East field, separated by a small wooden bridge over a little stream. The play area is basic as per most C&CC sites but has plenty of room for football and general messing about. There is also a small wooded area where the children spent time exporting.
The shower / toilet block is pretty old as has been mentioned before. However, it was always spotlessly clean and the showers were lovely and hot and extremely powerful (none of that push button nonsense) Only slight negative here is that there are only 3 male / female cubicles each so you might be waiting if you don't plan your visit!
Digital TV reception on site was reasonable, a bit of fiddling around and the use of the 'antenna aligner' app had us up and running in no time. The site has had its wifi upgraded and that's evident with the new masts dotted about, I didn't use this facility as I prefer to use 3G / 4G mobile wifi services instead as we have more than one device connected at a time. For anyone interested, you should have no problems using EE 4G data services, I had download spreads at over 20mbps so the use of live services such as iPlayer were no problem at all.
We had to visit the Secret Nuclear Bunker with it only being a couple of miles down the road and it was brilliant, as was the quad biking. There is also a tree top climbing type assault course which looked really good but very busy and needs to be booked prior to turning up.
Saturday night is curry night in our house and the same rules apply when away in the Caravan, this called on the services of the nearby 'Indian Spice' takeaway (about a 10 min drive towards Brentwood) and it was excellent. There is also a Chinese takeaway in the same parade of shops. Sainsburys is also on the same road about another 5 mins further.
All in all, a very enjoyable stay and a site we will return to again for a quick, relatively local get away.
I hope you find this review useful.

I was nearly put off this site by some less positive reviews, but was glad that we went in the end. Having not camped since I was a child, this was the ideal site for us to find our feet again, and test out the new tent and accessories whilst being close enough to friends in Southend. We visited twice in 2013 and will no doubt return next year.
I agree that the facilities are in need of renovation - but are definitely useable and were spotless for both of our stays. The whole site in fact was exceptionally tidy - both times we visited it was quiet though and we had a good amount of space around us. We don't have kids or dogs so no comment on that side - although there is well signposted facilities for both.
We had a warm welcome at reception and were shown quickly to our pitch - we had EHU both times and no issues with this (apart from deciding it doesn't feel like proper camping!)
Overall we were impressed and will recommend this site. The location feels secluded but not far from the nearest towns and villages if you need supplies and the nuclear bunker just up the road is fascinating.
See you in 2014!

We are not C and CC members, though we used to be until we left the UK to live in France. I have never thought their 'Friendly Club' tag line was particularly appropriate, and our recent experience reinforced this view.
We were visiting the UK with our caravan and wanted a campsite near Chelmsford for a one-night stay on our way north. There is a lack of well-reviewed sites in this area so, slightly reluctantly, we decided to stay at Kelvedon Hatch. We arrived and were greeted pleasantly enough by a lady warden. While checking in I asked about their wi-fi, and she told me to settle in and then come back to pay for the wi-fi. She then contacted another warden and asked him to show us to a pitch. He guided us to a pitch in one of the two fields, not far from the facilities. We set up the caravan, plugged in, etc and then I went back to pay £2 for the wi-fi and get the necessary code.
When I returned to the caravan I found that there was no signal, so I went back to reception to check if anything was amiss. Both wardens were present. I was told that the wi-fi did not serve the field we were in. I said that, in that case, I would like my money back, to be told that there were no refunds. I was told that I could bring my computer to their information room, or they could move us to another pitch. I told them that neither of these options was satisfactory, especially that latter after we had set up and plugged in. A heated discussion ensued, which was only resolved when a third warden - clearly the boss - appeared and told the others to refund my money.
Incidentally, the toilet facilities at this site are some of the worst I've encountered in the UK, but the club has applied for planning permission to replace them. I won't be going back to try out the new ones!

Just had 3 nights. Very nice stay. Lovely big site, which wasn't a problem for use of the faciliaties. Plenty of hot water and clean.
The grass was nice and short. Plenty of trees and walks. Very. Good value for money and even got discount for age in August.
The bunker is well worth a trip, also has paintball, archery and low ropes. However, it was not as close to southend as I thought at least an hour away.

Had a great long weekend at this site over Fathers Day weekend. It was excellent. Friendly wardens, immaculately kept if a little dated in places. Very rural with some excellent footpaths around the surrounding lanes. Nuclear Bunker was great and Highland Park near Chelmsford worth a visit. South Weald great for dog walking. A notice on the site says improvements to Kelvedon are not far off. Well worth a visit.

This was our second visit to Kelvedon Hatch so thought it time to review!
The site is simple, basic and in a lovely rural Essex setting only about 20 minutes from home, so nice and handy for quick get-aways :-)
There are 2 main camping fields which have nicely spaced pitches and the site is edged with mature trees, giving it a nice secluded feel, Toilets are oldy-worldy (think Carry on camping) but are spotless and perfectly adequate, the showers are piping hot and have brilliant pressure, better than some more modern sites that we have visited, there are 3 washing up sinks and one for laundry as well as a laundry room.
The dog walk is handy and away from the main camping areas too.
Site staff are very friendly and helpful and the pitches are well maintained and tidy, a very small 'shop' stocking sweets etc is in reception.
I agree that if the C&CC invested a bit of money then this site could be a goldmine but as it is, it is great for just kicking back and relaxing, especially in the summer months when the site is better drained (it does get a bit swampy when wet as we found out last July!)
I would disagree with the other reviewer about the lack of things to do in the area, I know I am probably biased but I know there are lots more things to do than just the nuclear bunker and all within driving distance. Lakeside or Brentwood for retail therapy, the little towns of Ongar, saffron walden and Maldon are worth a visit, Southend-on-sea for typical seaside fun or Leigh-on-sea for a bit more'trendy', Epping forest and lots of other country parks and the lovely antiques centres at Battlesbridge and Rettendon to name but a few. Not to mention al the great pubs and restaurants in the area.
All in all, I would recommend this cute little site for those wanting a quiet place to relax in rural Essex, a good old fashioned campsite that I will definitely be using again.

We have just returned from a 3 night break at this campsite which we stayed at to attend an Olympic event.
Wardens were very helpful & we were very happy with our pitch.
Toilet blocks could do with some updating & they could do with more showers (only 3 for ladies currently). Also the one shower was blocked when I went to use it. However the toilets/showers are clean.
We always use the dishwashing sinks and more than one would be useful.
Children's park is basic but my 3 year old still enjoyed it. The site is very peaceful which we liked & there was no late night noise unlike some sites we have to.
I think it was very good value for money to be able to stay so close to London during the Olympics.
Improvements could be made to the site but on the whole I would recommend it & we had a lovely holiday.
