An interesting site part set amongst trees with gravel roads, immaculate toilets and very friendly staff (John and Sue). Electrics were a bit 'iffy' if you pulled too much power but it was NOT inconvenient once you had mastered the principals. Showers were hot and powerful and WITHOUT those annoying taps you have to keep pushing every 10 seconds or so, although the number of showers is limited particularly for Ladies. Small shop for essentials (milk etc.) and a daily newspaper if you ordered it.
BEWARE of the Tom Tom Satnav route. It takes you down a very narrow road and at the very end there's an extremely narrow gate. Luckily I'd discovered this problem before we left otherwise my caravan would not have gone through. Old MacDonalds farm is worth a visit, £36 for a family of 5 but kids under 10 will love it. The Toby Carvery just through Brentwood is also excellent value. We will be returning.

We visited this site on the first open weekend(March 14-16) and were very impressed, the signage to the site was very clear. We were met on arrival by the Camps Management Team who welcomed us like old friends even though we had never been there before. We were escorted to our pitch and full assistance was given to pull our puck (600Kgs) in to position in order that we could face our friends who were yet to arrive but had already been allocated the pitch next to ours.
The toilet/washing/laundry block were immaculate and well maintained whilst we were there and I agree with the earlier reviews that the shower pressure was excellent. We were impressed with the water and waste disposal area on both grass areas, excellent, which was positioned right in the middle near enough but not to near the pitches. Our only comment was that as it was very wet under foot walking across and was slightly boggy but obviously no solution can be made for this eventuality unless you put stepping stones in, but I think this would then spoil the grass areas given the amount of pitches around the site.
During the weekend we found the Management Team constantly on the go, obviously last minute preparations for the season but they always had time for advice or a friendly chat or advice on where to visit, what to do or supply us with items that we needed. (You must try the eggs which we found huge and made a fabulous omellete on both days, also liked the fact that you could order your daily papers.
All in all an excellent site which was our first experience of caravanning and despite the inclement weather has made us look forward to our next adventure in our little Puck.
Other positives from our stay at Kelvedon Hatch was the visit to the 'Secret' Nuclear Bunker which I found exceptionally informative having served Queen and Country during some of the period covered and am looking forward to returning to catch up on the bits I missed/couldn't take in. The Chinese Restaurant was excellent within the Golg Course at the end of the road, as are the pubs in the village, we did however find that two of them although stating they were open all day on the signage were shut when we went for a pre-dinner drink at about 4.30pm on the Friday evening. They were open the following evening and we enjoyed an excellent meal in olde worlde surroundings with excellent service at the Shepherd.

Well another one for us that we have visited.
First the warning.
SAT NAV TO HERE FROM M25 WARNING. Watch out for this as it will try and take you up a road which is only 6ft 10 wide and signs are not brillant. Take A1023 from M25 Jnc 28 and go into Brentwood high street and then onto A128 Ongar road its much safer.
Anyway this campsite is truely lovely. The shower in the mens is probably the worlds most powerfull shower its mega ! the toilets are very clean to a high standard. The disabled facilities are extremely first class.
The pitchs are lovely and clean there are some hardstandings. You are escorted to your pitch and helped into position. There is an excellent feel to it all and the evening views of the stars are lovely even being so close to our capital city.
This is a top class site and worthy of high praise. We will certainly go back.

This is a nice site which is within walking distance (through the woods) of the nearest village with pub. We did go on a busy bank holiday weekend and we were squashed into a small pitch, but we can imagine it is much nicer when less busy. Toilets and showers were good.

This is a nice site. Mainly caravans but a good mix of tents as well. The reception was very friendly and helpful and I was shown to a nice pitch but given the choice to pitch wherever I wanted. The shop sells fresh eggs, bacon, etc & there is a kiddies play area which looked clean and lots of fun. The field I was in was well kept, mown grass and flat. In the middle of the pitching area was the drinking water supply and rubbish disposal which was convenient for all but not to close. There are open pitches or you can choose a more sheltered location near the perimeter tree line. The toilet block was very clean and totally acceptable. However there was only one shower cubicle in the male block, but it wasn't a problem that night even though the site was pretty full up.most seem to use the facilities in their camper homes I reckon. The site wasn't very noisy after dark, most seem to respect the need to let others sleep. I was just a solo cycle tourer with a small one man tent but I was treated well, welcomed and I would have no problems at all in recommending this site to others.

We've just returned from spending 6 nights at this site near Brentwood in Essex. It's fairly easy to get to from J28 of the M25, although a sat-nav will take you down the most convoluted route which for anyone with a caravan would be horrible - our tip would be to just head for Brentwood town centre, and then get onto the A128 towards Chipping Ongar - you'll see the familiar brown signs pointing right.
The site itself is excellent. It's nice and flat, surrounded by trees with trees around the place. There's a small but pleasant play area for kids and the toilets and showers sparkled - they were immaculate and we didn't have to queue. They were split into two blocks, mainly toilets in the one, mainly showers/washing in the other. One comment would be though that in the Gent's washing block, the mirrors were a little on the low side - I'm not short and it was a back breaker, although there was one mirror above a sink that was a little higher. Similarly for the washing up sinks - there are four, and three of them are really low down and back breaking. I know that a lot of kids do the washing up, but.! Otherwise excellent. There is also a laundrette on site.
Regrettably we did have problems with some noisy neighbours who decided to hold a bit of a drunken party at 10pm lasting until past 4am. Quiet time starts at 11pm at Camping and Caravanning club sites, and we expected this to be upheld. We made two direct complaints to the people concerned but it didn't help, so at 3.30am we had to go see the site managers who had a word and things did quieten down eventually. The managers' attitude seemed a little nonplussed about it all though, especially as they'd only received the one complaint - from us - but we were the only ones in a tent in that immediate area, whereas all others were in caravans, which are a tad more soundproofed and we had been woken and being kept awake. The people in question did apologise and all ended well between us and them
All in all we've enjoyed our time at Kelvedon Hatch. There are loads of things to do in the local area, such as the Nuclear Bunker, Old McDonald's Farm, and Brentwood is only 30 minutes from London by train, although we recommend that people use Shenfield rather than Brentwood station itself - the parking is MUCH better and quiet cheap for an all day ticket after 10.30am, although it's a bit of a hike from the car park to the platforms.
The site did survive the torrent of rain that we had on Friday 20th July, although if you camp under or near trees the drips from their branches will do your head in! The ground was nice and stone free but did go a little muddy, mainly due to the huge amounts of rain. We had booked to stay from the 20th, but the dire forecast lead us to call and book to go a day early which was easily accommodated by the manager - and for which we are SO grateful!
Go along, see what you make of it yourselves - you'll have a good time, neighbours excepted.

Just arrived back from this site. New wardens had taken over for this season and were very friendly and helpful even when we managed to blow our electricity supply twice in the space of as many minutes ( as new caravanners we now know the purpose of low wattage kettles.). Our children had a great time playing and exploring and the other campers were very friendly. Will be back.probably lots and lots.

This was our first camping expedition... 2 adults, 1 toddler and two large dogs in a trailer tent and awning.
This appeared to be a great first time site and was small, well kept, local and with very friendly and helpful staff.
The toilets and showers were very clean and even during cleaning hours there was no waiting around. The washing up area was next to the block and there was also a good water point in the middle which was ideal for us.
The dog walk was OK for a stretch out on the lead but with two large dogs we had to walk out in the lanes to find somewhere they could really get going off the lead. I guess it all depends on the size of dog and the amount of exercise they are used too.
On the site there were a few big motorhomes, lots of caravans, two or three trailer tents and a dozen or so tents... a real mix but ideal. We were aware that turning up on Fiday evening and pitching in the middle of the field (the wardens idea as we had a toddler - away away from the car track) might mean everybody sat in their caravans and stared at us struggle on... within two minutes of being there we had our first "welcome" chat, offer of help and a cuppa on the way from a friendly fellow camper. This was a godsend and made us feel very at home... in fact throughout the couple of days we noticed that everybody seemed so friendly and exchanged pleasantaries all the time, without being "in your face".
Would we go back? definitely... the only hitch is that they do appear to be so well booked for weekends, for months! We tried to see if we could get back for the August bank holiday but no chance, it was booked up solid months ago! At least we'll know for next year though and will be back like a shot!
Cheers... :-)

Our weekend stay with a group of friends here was nice enough but we have to agree with the previous reviewer in that the warden does seem to run this campsite a little like a boot-camp, which is a shame! We were told to move to the next field if we wanted to kick our sponge football around (we were considerate enough to play quietly right next to our tent anyway in respect of fellow campers) - we thought this was a bit unnecessary - after all, it's a campsite and everyone is there to enjoy themselves! He also seemed very particular on exactly where we should park our car and pitch our tent (right in the middle of the field!) and didn't offer an alternative when we asked if we could pitch elsewhere, although the campsite wasn't particularly busy. All the toilets and washrooms were completely closed for about one and a half hours in the morning for cleaning which was an inconvenience. Also we thought it was a little overpriced considering the basic amenities provided and the location - 44 pounds for 3 people in one tent for two nights (although we are non-members) We might return but only because the campsite is a few miles from our home - and only if it was a short visit.
On the plus side, the toilets and showers were kept very clean and the campsite itself was pleasant and extremely well kept, if a little too quiet for our liking.

Camped at this site for 5 nights during the school Holiday's. On arrival we were met by friendly and helpful staff. As normal we were given a large pitch, the toilets and showers were all clean and tidy. Yes it was busy at the weekend but all campers were in good humour
