The Firs is a gem of a site. Wardens were helpful and very friendly,
The facilities were all clean and tidy, with privacy cubicles throughout
The site was well laid out with fantastic views from parts.
The site has super pitches, but we were not able to use these as they were full, but every pitch does have an aerial hook up point
The local pub, 3/4 mile away, served fantastic reasonably priced food and drink.
The local chippy is the award winning Georges, supposed to be very good but a little hard to find.
So all in all a fantastic site to which we will be returning to very soon

As we were new to caravanning last year this was the first site we visited with it being fairly near to home.
The welcome was excellent and the wardens couldn't do enough to help us. The facilities were excellent and the site clean and welcoming.
The surrounding area was very scenic and the views were splendid.
We enjoyed it so much the first time, we made it our first break of this year and shall definitely be returning.

A nice site in a very scenic area, spotlessly clean facilities up to the usual CC standards. At the far end of the site is a steeply sloping dog walk which is a bit of a joke really, but more importantly just above that is a dinky little picnic area with stunning views over the Derwent Valley.
Pub 'The Spanker' serves good food and is about 30 minutes walk away. Belper is an interesting town to explore if you are interested in history, particularly the Industrial Revolution as the Derwent Valley Mills is a world heritage site.
Matlock Bath, Carsington Water reservoir, and Ashbourne all within easy reach.
Recommended!

Reception: Very welcoming, helpful and friendly. Newspapers are available.
Pitch: Good sized hard-standing pitch with TV hook up (we had no30 near information building) Grass pitches at the bottom of the site have the best views over the valley.
Facilities: All of the facilities are spotless, with lots of hot water and well powered showers
Dog walk: This is at the bottom of the site, quite steep. If you would prefer, turn left out of site and follow the road along the Ridgeway, but be careful, there are places with no footpath. There is also a road into Ambergate, but it is quite a steep hill which is hard on the legs on the way back.
Pubs: Nearest pub is The Spanker Inn which is a nice pub serving 3 real ales, approx 15 minutes away. There are more in the district, Ambergate for example but we did not visit them.
Local Transport: There is a bus stop outside the site which goes to Belper, (every 2 hours) a small town with the usual variety of shops. But it does have a large retail outlet next to Morrisons along the main road which is well worth visiting.
Play Area: There is no play area, which judging by the visitors book is a sore point, but surely people read up on the site before visiting.
All in all a very nice site, open all year and would definitely return, maybe for a little longer than a weekend next time.

Absolutely brilliant site. We stayed for a weekend on pitch number 57 which whilst on the small size had the best views on the site, was close to the excellent toilet block and opposite a picnic area where you could sit and take in the views. It was like our own private terrace.
The Wardens were lovely, really friendly.
There is no play area for kids which meant there were not a lot of them at the site. This just added to the peace and quiet, although there were quite a lot of small yappy dogs!
It's a 15 minute walk to the local pub which served excellent food at very reasonable prices, but it's a bit of a puff back up the hill when you've had a couple and a big meal!
We'll definitely go again and would thoroughly recommend.

Used site as a journey breaker on our return to Lancs from E Anglia. Small site but with great facilities and great staff.
Two really good pubs about. 75 of mile in either direction. We chose Spankers Arms. Great choice. Fab food from good menu and very reasonable.
Site itself on top of hill and they have made a small sitting area where you can take in the fab views across the valley.
Everything you would need although two small gripes - as site small everyone seemed to be on top of each other and dog walk is not the best - on a steep slope and with very long grass which makes picking up cleanly a real challenge.
Would stay again

We stayed here for 1 night as we were new CC members and this is also very close to the CI Dealer - Geoff Cox, about 10 mins.
The CC booklet gives you instructions to follow for the route and advises not to follow satnav. I used the CC instructions and it was for the best. Some of the roads to access the site that a satnav takes you on are extremely steep and lined with cars and blind bends. The CC route is very easy.
The site is protected by an electric barrier, card issued for free on check in. We were warmly welcomed and told to go find a pitch and come back with a number for them to enter on their logs.
The site was very well kept, we went for a standard hardstanding pitch which was level.
The site has a bottom section where the motorhome service point is that has good views and slightly out of the way. The service point was excellent.
The toilet block was excellent and upto expected standards.
There was no kids playpark, infact I think our daughter was the only 1 on site.
There is an information block, we had the pitch in front of this. Lots of leaflets for local attractions and we stocked up for the future.
We somehow forgot our alcohol stash so I nipped to the local petrol station/spar. We had taken our car as well to get back home from the dealer the next day and I could use some of the roads from the sat nav. The petrol station was only a few mins drive. I think there is also a Morrisons quite local to the site.
All in all a nice site, £25 for 2 adults, 1 kid and a motorhome with electric so pretty expensive but I couldn't fault the site.

We visited the Firs for a 3 night stay in April over a weekend. Site was lovely with breath taking views over the valley. The site is on 2 levels with a one way system in place.
There is dedicated fenced off dog walk area which is ideal to let your dog off the lead as you know she will be safe, although it is a bit steep because it is on the hill-side.
All on-site facilities were excellent and there is an extra booster facility available for TV aerials (extension cable needed, and available at the site shop if you don't have one already)
Site is close to Belper which has some nice shops and also a Morrisons. We also visited the Peak Outlet Village which is about 13 miles away but well worth it!
The only grumble we had with the site really was the cost. It worked out at £67.50 for 3 nights which was a little on the pricey side, but our stay was enjoyable so it was money well spent I suppose!

I have just returned from 4 nights at this site. It is quite a small site in a pretty location, although the site itself is pretty and functional rather than spectacular. As ever with caravan club sites the toilet block was clean and warm, I love being able to control the shower temperature and not having to keep pressing a button.
It is immaculately kept and the staff are pleasant and helpful. The site is a mix of grass pitches and hard standings although some of the grass has that 'all weather' stuff underneath it.
The terraced field at the far end has nice views, but is away from the toilet block. There are ample hook ups, water and rubbish points etc.
To take advantage of the views some picnic tables have been beautifully situated to make a lovely place to eat in the summer. For some reason dogs are not allowed in this area, which seems a little odd! The dog walk is not great and in this weather was a little hazardous, but it did the job sort of!
It would be nice to see some work done just at the bottom of the steps to help make it less slippy in wet weather. I found a lovely footpath a few hundred yards away though (left out of site entrance, 1st right, 200yrds on right)which had fabulous views too. There is no play area for children, but it's such a small site I think this is probably sensible, the girls didn't complain about that once so I don't think it cramped their style much!
It's a 5 minute drive to Belper. I really liked Belper, it's an ordinary little town with all the things you would expect - morrisons, wilkinsons, iceland, macdonalds, subway etc - and a few nice boutique shops too. 'Bliss' sells the best range of 'smelly stuff' I have come across
There are lots and lots of 'tourist' things to do in the area, we went to the Denby visitor's centre. Be warned, if you want children to take part in their activities it's probably best to book before you even set off for the holiday as these are very popular (I also thought the route was terribly badly signposted)
We visited the illuminations at Matlock Bath which were just lovely, pretty, not gaudy. There are several great 'chippys' here too and more sweet shops than I have ever seen in one place, including 'cocoa bean' in a little arcade, where your kids can make a chocolate pizza!. Chinese restaurant 'Memories of China' on the junction of the A6 and A610 at Ambergate was not cheap, but very good food and excellent service.
Given that the weather was not great and I was with two 10 year olds I thought the site was excellent, clean, comfortable and safe and the area full of things to do no matter what the weather, most of which were very inexpensive. I would go back.

It was our first visit to a Caravan club site so we have nothing to compare it to but we found the site to be very well maintained and clean. The showers were a pleasure to use. The wardens are very welcoming and friendly. I hope all the other caravan club sites are as nice.
We ate at a local pub/restaurant 'The Fisherman's Rest' which we can highly recommend. Turn right out of the campsite, 1st right 100yds further on and it is at the bottom of the hill, only about 1/2 a mile away but it would be an uphill slog on the way back. The food is delicious (hubby said 'outstanding' ) and the staff very friendly. They also have a range of real ales.
