This is a lovely little site located just off the A68, 1 mile South of Byrness.
Check-in was easy and quick and access to the pitches for my twin-axle, straightforward. Dogs on leads on the site, but after crossing the small river bridge they are free to roam the miles of tracks that make up Kielder Forest Estate.
Toilets and showers were clean and the chemical disposal and grey water waste were easily accessible.
The owner makes his way around the site with his pet pig, which would appeal to small children and there are also Alpacas in the field next door.
Now the downside; midges and lots of them, if they get to you, then you'll have to avoid this site during warm, wet weather, sorry, but there it is.
Digital TV signal has not arrived yet, but is due to do so in September 2012. We did have a good 3G mobile signal that allowed us to use a mobile dongle.

Very pleasant rural location - excellent for dog walking and people who love nature and quiet.
Close to Hadrian's Wall with Pennines Way passing close to campsite.
Forestry Commission walks very close at hand.
Uninterrupted countryside - no local pub, shops or other urban conveniences.
Well kept - toilets, showers and bin areas very good. Grass cut during my stay.
Well drained despite previous heavy rain.
Modern and welcoming with barrier access.
Lack of local shopping requires forward planning,Jedburgh only 23 minutes drive.
No WiFi or 3G but adequate GPRS for email, leisurely Web browsing and RDP
Good mobile reception for O2, Vodafone, Orange and possibly more.
Nature-lovers catered for but little of interest for small children other than ponies, pigs and llamas - bring your own entertainment - especially teenagers.
Nice toilet and washing up block close to tent area but showers a short walk away
For those wishing for a quiet life with few modern distractions.

Been regular visitors at this site for a few years now. Two adults and two dogs. Great site loads of walks just off the site. Really friendly site and nice and relaxed. This is one of the few sites we go back to time and time again. This site is improving with age, and is being constantly updated, recently improving toilet and shower blocks all of which are in clean and excellent condition. This site is a haven for wild life, and hours can be spent watching the birds, crossbills are regular visitors. Deer can be seen from the site and whilst out walking. Highly recommended site. Peace and quite a little piece of heaven.

This is a lovely campsite.
The plus points
The pitches are lovely and spacious.
The location is very quiet and peaceful with a river running along the bottom and backing onto the edge of the Kielder Forest and the Otterburn Ranges across the road.
Washing up area is the best I've ever seen with bowls, brushes and washing up liquid provided.
There is a communal fridge along side.
The toilets are very clean and the hand towels and hand wash is a lovely touch.
The showers are free, clean and hot.
The down sides:
Midges are rampant
There is no children's play area so make sure you bring your own entertainment.
There is no shop on site not even for the basic milk and bread. We got caught out and ended up on a 45 min cycle ride to the nearest shop.
All in all a near perfect location. We will be back

There have been some changes recently with the addition of the small toilet block in the middle of the caravan field with wash up area and fridge/freezer,
There are even books and DVDs on a shelf, fortunately this does cut the walk from the camping field by 150m and is kept very clean, however it’s not for the shy as it is total mixed toilet block with little privacy for the individual.
The normal toilet and shower block is also very clean with the addition of a large shower which I’m told in the female side is a total wet room with toilet.
I do like the touch of the daily clean towels for use and hand cleaner which is usually stolen on other sites along with free washing up liquid (no! not left by others I know what your thinking)
Yes, it is far from shops and tailored entertainment and you do need to make sure you bring it all with you. Other reviews have stated locations and distances restaurants etc that’s why we went. You really can just sit back and relax here, and if your up early enough watch the deer in the vally fields.
There are many places to visit within a relatively short drive and on one extremely wet morning an hour’s trip to Newcastle and the movies saved the day.
An extra special touch is the Ant and Deck (horses) or bubble and squeak (pigs) pet walk most nights after tea (or dinner if you prefer) they get a walk through the site so the kids of all ages can pat them and watch some little tricks. Nice!
A point to note is the camping field cannot currently be used during the week so give them a call if your going as many passers through were unable to camp. The pictures on their website does reflect the beauty and forest walks right on your doorstep but it comes at a price - Midges “thousands of um”

We agree with most of Daveybuntu's comments. The toilet/ shower facilities weren't as roomy as some but clean and fully functioning.
We were on the tent field which is enormous but would never go to this site again with a tent because of the midges. It is the worst site (apart from one in Italy) we have ever come across for midges. We were bitten to distraction despite using anti bug repellent. I wish I had seen the reviews before going there so I knew what to expect.
As it was late we had to stay one night and there had been a notice in Reception saying no refunds for various reasons including midges!
It spoiled our holiday to be honest as we suffered from the bites for at least a week after. Also, it was over priced really.

Arrived for a two night stay and was made very welcome from outset.
Site very quiet, though might not suit those with active kids, and attractive.
As a solo traveller I was particularly pleased by pricing policy which is per individual. It can be expensive at those sites that charge a set minimum based on two people.
I was allowed to chose own gravel hard-standing which was amongst a mixture of grass pitches and tents.
Shower and shower block was superb though might benefit from some hooks in the washbasin area. There was also an extra toilet block on site.
While I was there there was improvement work being carried out on dish washing facilities (work progressed without intrusion or any disturbance at all).
Pleasant walks in and around surrounding wooded area.
I enjoyed my time there and I would go back

Decided a more up-to-date review would be useful to people!
My partner and I have just come back from a weekend at border forest campsite and I wanted to tell you all what a wonderful campsite this is. Quiet and peaceful and very relaxing, the staff are very friendly and very helpful.
The only minus point I feel I should mention is that the toilets and showers are a bit of a walk away from the tent field, but they are very clean, free, full of hot water, and are wetrooms so you can lock yourself in and do everything to get yourself ready for the day in one go!
Border Forest is located a bit of a trek from any shops or anything with the closest sho[p being a small 'premier' in Otterburn which is about 9-10 miles away, so stock up on food and drink before you go, there is a refrigerator on site which was really useful. There are a lot of historic sites within an hours drive from the campsite including hadrien's wall and some National Trust properties which we found very interesting, well worth a visit!
The site is on a farm so there are chickens, ponys, horses and either alpaccas or llamas to look at in various fields, a pretty stream and lots of walks to explore.
In all we had a wonderful stay and would definitely go again!

Visited Border Forest Park in the first week in February, the owners are upgrading the place and there are now quite a few hard stands and plenty of hookups around the site.
The owners and their family are very helpful and cheerful, happily pulling my truck out when I got it stuck!
Despite the awful weather when I was there I really liked the site, in less than a minute you can be on the Pennine way, there are endless forestry tracks to follow (mind and take an OS map with you) I walked for hours and my 2 springers loved it.
Don't know about showers & toilets as I used my own, water supply was just a few metres away in the middle of the pitches, not surprisingly the site was very quiet, but I'll be back later in the year,
There's no shop on site, but there is a village store in Otterburn, there's a cafe a couple of miles south, a pub 3 miles south and a few places in Otterburn, 8 miles south, so it's not a problem, can't comment on child friendliness as I didn't have one with me and the one I've got is 24!

Myself, my husband and our dog stayed at this site from 5th - 11th August. The site is set in a beautiful, peaceful area, and is doggy heaven with all the available trails/walks from the campsite. The site is a little remote, with nearest small shop/pub in Otterburn which is around a 15 minute drive. However, this is what we like most as what's the point of camping in the wild, only to be surrounded by towns and pubs?
The facilities here are clean and accommodating, and the owners run their site very well without making their presence known too much. We were particularly impressed when a rowdy bunch of campers were 'put to rights' immediately. Mostly, other campers were very considerate and abided by the campsite rules. We were a little disappointed that some people actually walked their dogs on site and allowed them to poop without making any effort to scoop! Not the site owners fault though as they had plenty of signage around the site, and so many walks available it beggars belief.
We would definitely return to this site and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others. We even worked out a system to 'dodge' the midges. You just gotta work around them and with nature. :o)
