My wife, the dog and I went for 3 nights camping in mid Sept. We were looking for a site in the north east of England as that was where the weather forecast was best. So we did a search on here and found Border Forest Caravan Park. The thing that grabbed my attention was that said it was paradise for dogs. It is exactly that! There were loads of forest walks which were accessible directly from the site. Many of them were also suitable for cycling, which is what we did, Charlie loves to trot along beside us on a nice long cycle. When we arrived we pulled up outside the reception, which is just the porch on the house converted into the reception. It was small but perfectly formed and it was well signed so there was no problem identifying it or accidentally walking into the owners house. The lady who served us when we arrived was very friendly and gave us a warm welcome (even though we didn't arrive until a bit after 20:00) She gave us a good briefing of the site ie. Where various facilities were, where we would best pitch to avoid the midges etc. And said that if we needed anything at all just to come and ask. As the place was not very busy when we arrived we were allowed to pitch wherever we wanted, which was nice. Most of the pitches have electric hook up and the drinking water taps are well located to be in a short walk from all pitches. Whilst setting up the caravan we discovered that someone had forgot to pack the duvet, pillows etc. So there we were, now nearly 21:00, in the middle of nowhere with no sleeping stuff and no idea where we could get some. I was confident that if we had gone back to reception that they would have been happy to assist us. However, as it was getting late I didn't want to disturb them, but mainly I didn't want the embarrassment of saying we'd forgotten something so important. Anyway, through imaginative use of the mobile phone and friends with internet access we discovered that there was a 24hr Tesco extra in Hexham about 30 miles away, which proved to be a life saver. For general shopping in regular hours there are much closer shops but still about 10 miles. There is supposedly a bar / eating place within a mile but I never went to them. There is also a petrol station with a cafe attached about a mile away. We didn't use all the facilities on the site, in fact all we used were the toilets showers and dish washing. They do have laundry and chemical toilet disposal facilities too, but I can't comment on those. The ladies toilets had some private wet rooms which comprise of a toilet, shower and sink in a private cubicle and are fairly modern. The gents, however would benefit from some modernising and a more regular cleaning / check-up. The showers provided warm water, and the one I used you couldn't adjust the temperature. I don't know about the others because I didn’t check, the temperature on mine was fine and it did the job. Again the gents showers could do with some modernising. What would be useful is a mop and bucket in the shower areas so that everyone could mop out after themselves. The dishwashing facilities were disappointing, I only know of one on the site, but then I didn’t look for anymore. The one I used was only for one person at a time and did not have any hot water. Okay, so I boiled a kettle to get warm water for washing up, but if that was the only dish washing facilities then they could really do with improving. The guy who also runs the site, I assume it is a husband wife team, is nice and friendly too. He came over for a chat as he was passing on his mini tractor collecting the bins. I think partly this was a bit of market research to find out how we heard about the site (ukcampsite.co.uk I promptly told him) but we also had a nice chat about dogs. He has a giant schnauzer (that’s a breed of dog by the way, I’m not referring to his nose, which was perfectly normal size from what I remember). There are a number of statics on site (one was for sale when we were there – if your interested) maybe about 10-15, there was also a number of tourers which were set up but unoccupied, again maybe 10 or 15 (one of these was for sale too) and I assume these were for people who had paid for seasonal pitches. Everyone we met on the site was nice and friendly too. There are some animals on site which I think always adds a bit of interest. There are some things that look like pigmy llamas and there are some chickens. I think there must also be a big cock as it started crowing at about 4 am. That doesn’t bother me, you get that in a lot of rural places. It cost us £36 for 2 adults and a dog for 3 nights including electric hook up. Personally I think that is very reasonable. All in all I would say that this site is very good, okay the facilities are not up to C&CC standards but then they are not majorly bad either. There is nothing that would stop me going back again. In fact we did want to go back again this weekend; unfortunately we have a delivery coming on Saturday so we can’t. If you want a nice quiet site, which is very dog friendly and has some great walking on the doorstep then I would heartily recommend Border Forest Caravan Park. Just remember to pack your duvet!

This site is really peaceful and out of the way. The surrounding area is absolutely gorgeous. The site facilities for those of us in tents were not up to the standard we are used to. The new "wet room" type shower rooms are interesting. On first impressions they seem like a really good idea. However, using the loo after someone has had a shower is difficult. The toilet paper becomes damp, the toilet seat wet and also the floor is wet. There is little room to hang clothes if you don't want them wet and there is also nowhere to dry your feet. The whole of the toilet block area really smelled. I know that I am labouring the point somewhat but it is really important to get good toilet and shower facilities. The dish washing areas didn't't have any hot water and also the pricing structure was unbelievable. £1 extra a night in June, July and August and also £2.50 extra because it was a bank holiday. All in all this meant per night was £13 and I have been on much better sites that were less expensive. All said, we would probably go back just because the site is so tranquil.

Booked for 2 nights with electric hookup. 2 adults, 2 children and a dog. Great for walking with a dog as plenty of paths leading from the site. Nice site, pegs easily pushed in by hand. Basic but clean facilities. The dishwashing station had only cold water, we boiled a kettle. The shower block had hot and cold water. Friendly staff, nice views. Good base for border towns.

June 2005 It's a lovely site with a dozen or so static caravans and a hand full of pitches for tents. The owners are friendly and welcoming, as are the residents of the static's.
The facilities are somewhat basic; a couple of showers and toilets, but aren't always the cleanest - that being said, we were there at the annual Air Ambulance fund raising event, so the place was packed.
The only draw-back (apart from the guy in the next tent with a guitar and only 2 songs in his repertoire, happily strumming until 3.30am) were the mozzies! Unfortunately, it seems the only tent pitches are by the river at the bottom of the site. Picturesque it may be, but the mozzies really are unbearable!

April 2005 We have just got back from a bank holiday break and had a lovely time. There are new owners, so ignore the reviews about the funny owner, she isn't there anymore. The new owners are so friendly and helpful. There are four new shower rooms, like wet rooms with toilet, hand basin and showers in one room. We have visited before and were put off going back because of the last owner but are so glad we did.

March 2005 Comments from staff on site. Any moment now builders willing, our new ladies showers and loos will be ready. They consist 4 seperate shower / loo hand basin rooms we also have 2 further ladies showers. Later this summer we will have disabled shower and loo available. We fully agree how easy it was to mistake the reception for just a lobby, now have new reception which has just been completed. Many thanks to you all for your custom in the past and we look forward to welcoming new and old faces in the future.

August 2004 We had a great time at Border Forest. Kids loved the stream and we all enjoyed the Three Kings walk that's right on the doorstep (as is the Penine way). Highly recommended but have to echo the sentiment that the toilet\shower block is a little far from the tent pitches and the washing up point wasn't situated very well. But that's a small issue and we would certainly return. Didn't have much of a midge problem either - looks like we got lucky! The owners seemed friendly and helpful to us.

August 2004 A lovely campsite, unfortunately we stayed during August with the humidity, storms and floods and came home after one week. The owner was very friendly and helpful and the site was very clean including the showers. The only problem was the MIDGIES they were a nightmare due to the high humidity and the main reason for us coming home early. We tried every known brand of deterrent but nothing helped. I would be happy to return but only out of midgie season.

June 2004 We camped at the Border Forest Campsite in June 2004. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by the friendly staff who informed us of a number of local walks and amenities. The site is beautifully located and offers fantastic views. The drive from North Tyneside was very scenic and got us in the mood for a great outdoor weekend.
The facilities on the site are nothing special but well maintained. The shower and toilet areas are clean and well heated. Although there are only two showers in each block we did not find this to be a problem. The dishwashing area would have benefited from a more efficient hot water tap and the showers were nothing more than lukewarm.
The site is very dog friendly and offers a number of local walks where dogs can be off their leads. The one walk we went on was a very pleasant woodland trail.
This is a fantastic, basic, beautifully located, cheap camp site. But if you don’t like midges then stay away!
