Second visit here and second review. Nothing changed about this gem of a site that's why we came back. Facilities remain the same, functional, clean and well presented whilst Colin, Bill and Alison (oh and Bess the collie!)are just so friendly and accommodating whilst running a busy dairy farm too.

Won rosettes for the most friendly welcome from CCC members two years running and well deserved too. If you like your camping uncomplicated and basic is good enough you'll love it. Stunning views nice walks peace and quiet. Bliss. We'll be back !

Absolutely lovely site, perfect for real peace and a great base for exploring. It is a working farm yet the very busy farmer/site owner was always friendly and willing to stop his work to give directions/ advice etc. The facilities were kept in tip-top condition - no mean feat on a working farm. Highly recommend this little gem of a place.

This site has been nominated as the most friendly by the CCC and we now know why. The facilities are just as listed and kept well. There are two fields, one for tents and the other for 'vans but we asked to be on the tent site with our van and Colin the owner was very obliging. He let us get set up and then brought us a fistful of leaflets about the local area.

This site is a working dairy farm which Colin runs with his dad (and Bess the collie!)but they were always on hand if we needed anything and always smiling and happy to help. We stayed for 6 nights and can't wait to go back; We were 2 adults 2 dogs, campervan with awning and EHU all for ten pounds a night, Colin even gave us a refund as he said we'd overpaid once he'd done his sums!. What excellent value and all done with a smile. Colin, dad and Bess even waved us off when we left, truly genuine people making your stay really special. That's why they've won rosettes for 'most friendly site'.

I wanted to leave a review of this site from our most recent trip. We arrived at the farm in the afternoon and received a warm welcome from the owner. After he had explained all the facilities he left us to unpack and pitch the tent. The field was clean, recently mown and had a power hook up, washing up sink with tap and plug, a chemical toilet waste facility and drinking water tap. We found these to be extremely convenient, clean and well kept.

The toilet and shower facility is in the farm courtyard and while basic, were clean and had everything we needed. The owner checked on us throughout the week periodically to make sure we were ok and had everything we needed. He was always laid-back and helpful and never bothersome. We spoke to others who were on the site and they had been coming for years, sometimes weekend after weekend all summer long because the facility was so convenient, low cost and the owner was so welcoming and helpful.

The farm is relatively remote but the nearby town (about 3-4 miles) has a Tesco etc. And so you don't have to go too far to find anything you might need.

Overall, we were extremely happy with the trip and will be going back again in the near future!

Just had to leave a review for this lovely site as it is a true gem. We were visiting friends who have just moved to the area and as its a 2 and a half hour drive from home we decided to camp the night in our VW Campervan with our 2 year old daughter.

The site was very easy to find and well signed. After parking up at the gate we were greeted by the owner who couldn't have been nicer if he tried. A genuinely nice and very helpful chap who helped us find a suitable spot for our camper and awning. Upon unpacking we realised we had left the pegs for our awning and he very kindly lent us some.

We were in the field next to the farm which was small and well enclosed (I wasn't worried about my toddler escaping). There were 3 caravans already pitched up with awnings and plenty of space between. There is a field across the road which he uses but, as it wasn't very busy, it wasn't being used. No one else turned up so we had one half of the field to ourselves. We did book for electric hook up, which are down the one side in this field (I cant comment on the other field) along the wall, our cable didn't reach from where we had pitched (its tiny) and the owner offered to lend us an extension, but after a bit of head scratching from my husband we decided we were ok without the EHU (we only use it for a heater) and he gave us a refund for the EHU - never had that before as the campsites we have been to take it regardless of whether you use it or not. There was a tap in the corner of the field with drinking water.

The field was nice and flat and the view was beautiful over the estuary which made for a gorgeous sunset.

The toilet and shower facilities were located within the farm courtyard and were very clean. It does appear from the sign on the door that the facilities are uni-sex but when you enter there are 3 cubicles containing toilet, sink and shower so its all perfectly private.

Please be aware that this site is basic, something that never bothers us but may others. There is no playground for children and it is a working farm so I made sure my daughter didn't run around the courtyard as there is farm machinery within. She absolutely loved seeing all the cows though.

There is plenty to do off site, you are spoilt for choice on where to walk, either inland or the beach and you are a very short drive away from all the Lake District attractions.

There is a pub a mile down the road in Waberthwaite called The Brown Cow which I recommend to anyone. It serves the most amazing locally sourced food and is reasonably priced. They also serve lots of real ales which my husband loved sampling. The pub is both child and dog friendly with a lovely atmosphere which can be credited to the landlord, staff and locals. If you are camping without children at a weekend the pub has a reputation for excellent entertainment on a saturday night offering live bands on most weekends. They have a beer festival twice a year for which, we were told, people travel from miles around to sample the ales and cider. We shall be getting a babysitter and returning for one of these.

The nearest shop is in bootle which is around a five minute drive and if you travel a little further down the road to Millom they have a Tesco supermarket.

We can't wait to return.

We have just returned from a long Easter break at Newbiggin Farm. This was the first time we had been here and it probably won’t be the last. The site is a mile down a narrow lane from the main road, which isn’t a problem, as there are passing places along the route.

The caravan field is next to the farm (on the left as you approach from Waberthwaite) and the tent field is across the road. Each has a CDP, tap and electric hook-ups and the tent field has an outdoor sink. The caravan field slopes slightly, so chocks will be needed. There are three showers and two toilets in the room in the corner of the farmyard and the price is still 20p for three minutes of the shower. There is also a hairdryer that operates via a 20p slot machine.

No sooner had we got through the gate than the owner was behind us offering what must be his customary welcome. He gave us some leaflets and pointed out where we could pitch and the locations of all the facilities. In the caravan field, the hook-ups are all along the wall adjacent to the farm, so the owner offered us an extra hook-up lead so that we could pitch in our desired location. In our experience it is a just reward that the owner was last year nominated for CS of the Year in the category of Best Friendly Club Welcome.

The butcher, Richard Woodall’s, in the village, doubles as a small general store (but you must get some of their Cumberland sausage). The Brown Cow, on the main road offers wholesome home cooked food as well as a friendly welcome. If you plan to eat there at the weekend, I would recommend you book in advance. Nearest fuel is on the main road just north of Ravenglass.

If you are going to go up Scarfell Pike, the best route is from Wastwater. The first car park is NT, and from here allows the route to be a bit shorter than from the second, further car park. Also, if you are going to go up, plan to start early as it can get a bit busy!

Although we arrived before the Easter weekend and departed after it, we could quite happily have stayed for longer.

We stayed in a tent on a Monday in December. The farmer, was surprisingly welcoming, and helpful, and charged the two of us, our tent, and the car £5.

The tent field was well drained, satisfactorily flat, clean and well mown. I promised my woman a sea view, but was very disappointed. Views are estuary, not sea, better than the average campsite, but not spectacular. However the hills in the far distance were admired, and we pitched to appreciate that view, thankful that we could pitch where we liked. Not all of the field would see hills. The field is next to a single track road, with noticeable tractor traffic. Cars couldn't get much over 30 mph.

The toilet block was also clean, with two toilets and three showers, although using each of two showers would remove the availability of one of the two toilets. The showers are coin operated with 20p's. Insulation was poor, but toilet roll, soap, and hot water was welcoming. There is a big radiator, but this was not on. There is a walk of about 50 metres to these facilities.

This is a nice site, with a sincere, warm welcome, at a great price.

Our favourite campsite! Tucked away down a quiet lane by the estuary, this place is perfect, and we've been about five times now. We've considered other sites in the local area, but to be honest, I think we'd all feel guilty if we stayed anywhere else now!

The owners of the farm are two of the nicest guys you could meet - always have time for a chat and show a genuine interest in what their visitors are up to. Even their dog Bess will come to meet you with a smile - yes - really!

The site itself is basic - a level mown area at the edge of a field, sheltered by a hedge on two sides There are a couple of taps in the field, and a washing up sink has been added recently. There are also a number of hookups by the hedge. Over the lane at the farm there's a small shower block with three showers and a couple of toilets - always kept very clean and rarely busy. Showers work on a coin box that gives around three minutes for 20p.

A stream runs by the side of the field, and there's a rope swing over it which keeps the kids happy for hours. Plenty of space in the long grass in the rest of the field for them to play too. If you follow the road under the railway, and past the MOD firing range, there's a very nice beach right by the road. Muncaster Castle and the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway are about ten minutes away.

Several reviews have mentioned a lack of shops anywhere near - but there's Woodalls Butchers just down the lane which sells a fair bit of stuff besides their famous sausages and bacon. There's a very friendly and pretty well stocked Spar shop in Bootle too, which opens seven days and is only five minutes by car. Staff are always very pleasant.

If you're after a club house, loud music, adventure playgrounds and loads of 'facilities' etc - this site won't be for you. If you like peace and quiet away from it all, then you'll love it.

It is incredibly expensive however, at a whopping £7 a night for a large tent! We often pay extra, and have told Colin he should charge more - we'd be happy to pay double that!

Really can't fault this site on anything - if we could only camp on one site - it would definitely be this one.

Visited Newbiggen campsite this week for a 3 night visit. As stated in other reviews this place is a little hidden gem. On arrival we were greeted by the owner and his father who even running the farm go out of there way to help you out. I forgot my tent pegs so they spent over an hour looking in there garage for some spare for me! The owner also sells freshly laid eggs if you want them(yummy)

The camping field isnt huge. Room for maybe 8 caravans/tents which is nice and the views are lovely across the estuary and surrounding cumbrian fells.

Toilets and showers are basic but very clean and hot showers. 20p gets you around about a 3 min shower.

The surrounding area is lovely but not that many amenities for supplies. The nearest decent shop is tesco around about 11 mile away. The local pub is nice and friendly and the beach is roughly a 5 min drive. All in all and lovely peaceful area and site.

Will be returning to Newbiggen in the near future as its superb.

Well, I don't really want to tell you all how great this site is. Don't want to make it too popular that I can't get in! But I must sing it's praises. We have returned to this site three times now. The drive to get there is relaxing and scenic. Upon arrival the farmer greets you in the farmyard, along with his 'smiling' border collie. (yes she really does give you a smile to say hi).

The camping field is opposite the farmyard, but it is not a busy road. Lovely views from any where on the camping field. Pitches are all pretty much flat, and not marked out. Just help yourself to go where you want. Plenty of space for children playing ball games and running about.

Not part of the campsite but it is worth a mention that there is a stream running alongside the camping field (on the other side of the hedge) and someone has hooked up a rope swing over it. Our kids found that and had a whale of a time.

Toilets and showers over at the farmyard are basic but clean and functional with plenty of hot water, and never ever a queue. Showers are coin operated, there is also a plug socket - coin operated too - so you can use your own appliances, although there is a hairdryer there. Good walks in the area, near enough to the beach, local pub seemed ok, not really any shops apart from the 'famous' butchers shop. We went to St bees from there this time, and it was lovely.

All in all, lovely hosts, lovely views, very relaxing. Nothing fancy but at £7 per night it's an absolute bargain! We will definitely be returning.
