The Cherry Hinton Caravan Club Site was the first site for us to visit without our children. Upon booking our pitch a few months in advance we asked if our arrival between 7pm and 8pm would be ok. Thankfully we were able to arrive during the afternoon about 4pm only to be told it was a good job we arrived at this time as we probably wouldn't have a pitch to offer us, so the advantages of booking early are.
The wardens definitely need to attend a peoples skill course, especially the lady. Upon entering the reception area, the lady was bad mouthing a fellow camper who wanted to change pitch and then to be greeted with the above wasn't very welcoming. We even asked whether returning late via taxi would be ok to be given a disapproving look.
A nice idea of being provided with a site map with the available pitches highlighted. You can leave your caravan and car at reception whilst you go and choose your pitch. Most pitches reminded me of being in a car park. No character at this campsite. However, you can not fault the cleanliness, its immaculate within the grounds and the shower and toilet areas. The best shower I used was the disabled one, as it had a detachable shower head and are a turn on / turn off instead of push button.
We only saw 2 children at this campsite over the weekend. However, no children's play area or space for ball games is available. It is a site I would not bring my children to due to non existence of facilities.
The approach to the campsite is very narrow, so definitely worth using the alternative road mentioned.
The Robin Hood Pub is about a 5 minute walk away, providing excellent food, service at a reasonable price. Walk was down a lane with no street lights so torches are recommended. The bus stop to Cambridge is opposite the pub that takes you directly into Cambridge.
In Cambridge we went Punting and what an experience. We didn’t use the main providers situated by the bridge outside Prezzos but a smaller outlet set back. The guide was fantastic, extremely knowledgeable and enjoyable. Could not fault them one bit and at a much cheaper rate than the bigger providers.
If I was returning for a weekend to Cambridge, adults only and not wanting to spend much time at the campsite I would return.

Stayed three nights in this quiet very well run Caravan Club Site, Excellent showers with a abundance of hot water very clean toilets & showers, good areas for the grey & Black waters. When checking in one has to walk around the site first as the roads are quite narrow and lead to dead ends. Hard & grass areas with some area for tents. Wild life skips around, with high hedges which could be a problem for sun sheltered spots. The site leads off a narrow busy road so caution is needed for entering and leaving.
Very easy for cycling around Cambridge and the outer areas.

Unlike some earlier reviews I found the wardens very pleasant and helpful. They were happy for the motorhome to go on the pitch either way round as long as it was towards the marker peg (rightly so to maintain unit spacing).
I liked the fact the pitches are in little enclaves so you don't get traffic driving right past all the time. Being down in a dip the road noise wasn't a problem either.
Facilities are fine on site and there are reasonable pubs and shops within easy walking distance.
The big benefit is that there are regular busses into the City Centre from very near the site. It's an ideal location for a visit to the area.

On arrival we had a warm welcome. We were only using this site as a short stay over but soon wished we could be here longer. The site has many trees and shrubs making it quite secluded. Good bus service into Cambridge. Cambridge itself is great, many places to eat and drink, loads to see, and of coarse the river with its punts. The day we were there they had some very good singers/buskers on the streets witch all made up to be a great day out. Yes we will come here again.

We stayed at Cherry Hinton For 3 Nights on 21 February 2014, we arrived at the site just after 12pm, to be told no arrivals until 1pm, on checking the Caravan Club Web Page it clearly said no new arrivals before 12pm, (has now been changed)we were allowed to wander around to look for the pitch we wanted & use the toilet. Once we found which pitch we wanted, we then had to sit at the barrier until 1pm. At 1pm we were allowed to book in.
The models on the counter (car & caravan) showed how to pitch our outfit, Car, Caravan, Awning in that order, as most C. C sites are.
After booking in we pitched up & put the kettle on. The Male warden appeared knocked on the caravan door & said we were pitched wrong, it should be caravan, awning car, there's a post marking where the corner of the caravan should be.
After I drunk my coffee I moved the caravan over as to the wardens request.
As my wife was on her way to fetch the water the warden stopped my wife & asked why I had moved the caravan over, to which her reply was because you told him too, he then said I didn't mean he had to move, I was just pointing out we were pitched wrong. So why say anything if he didn't want it moved !
Other than that, we found the site to be very quiet, the toilet block was kept very clean, only 1 small grumble, (not specifically aimed at Cherry Hinton, but all C. C sites) the shower head are never mounted for Tall people, being 6'2' the shower heads mounted at 5'10' & usually a fixed head makes it awkward to wash my hair. We enjoyed our visit but don't think we will be returning anytime soon. Just a word of warning the approach road to the site is narrow so as you turn into the road keep an eye out for caravans coming down the hill, as the road isn't wide enough for 2 caravans side by side

A cool green shady oasis surrounded by horrendously busy roads, this is an ideal base for exploring Cambridge and the surrounding area. A word of warning, do not turn up before 1pm or you will just be sitting there at the barrier twiddling your thumbs until the wardens have finished their lunch break! There is absolutely zero flexibility on this.
For peace and quiet, avoid the pitches nearest the toilet block because there is a noisy outdoor sports court right next to the site and these are the pitches that get the noise. Instead, head downhill and to the left after the toilet block because if there are available pitches here, this is the next best thing to being pitched in a woodland glade - here the only sound is birdsong which is delightful.
The toilet block is bang up to date and spotlessly clean but did suffer from a shortage of hot water first thing in the morning, due to high demand no doubt. Dog owners wanting to give their pooch some serious off-lead exercise should cross the road outside the entrance and walk 50 yards to the chalk pit nature reserve where the dog can run around in freedom and safety.
Cherry Hinton itself has nothing to recommend it except a handful of local shops/takeaways and a couple of pub restaurants, we tried the Robin Hood and the food is fine but the service a bit lackadaisical. Buses go into Cambridge every 10 minutes from the stops opposite the Robin Hood. Good places to visit include Grantchester on the outskirts of the city, Saffron Walden, Bury St Edmunds, Ely and St Neots. All pretty and historic towns. Basically if you are considering a visit to this area you can't really go wrong with this site.

This is a brilliant site. Great location, beautifully clean and tidy and really helpful wardens.
The amenities block is wonderful. Showers are fantastic and beautifully clean, and even radio 2 on during the day. The laundry is a great facility, and the best washing machine and dryer I think I've had the pleasure to use. The radio again is a nice touch if you're waiting for your wash.
The whole site is tarmacked and so keeps nice and clean and tidy. The pitches are large and very flat and the service points are really nicely kept.
All in all, one of the best sites we've ever stayed at.
The only downside is a outdoor football court that is in close proximity to the site, which can get a bit noisy in the evenings.

Quiet, popular site that is located mainly within a forest glade setting. Facilities are kept to the Caravan clubs normal excellence. Cycling to the City is safe and convenient.
Our only criticism was the wardens over zealous approach who would definitely benefit from a 'people skills' course.
We walked (about 5 minutes) to the the Robin Hood pub but didn't try the food although it did seem popular with the locals. Prices and choice are good. We would recommend that you take a torch if you plan to walk from the site in the evening as some drivers travel too fast on the road outside the site

We arrived here five days ago and were met with the professional greeting we have come to expect from The Caravan Club. The location has suffered from a lot of rain recently and was not as well drained I thought an old chalk pit would be. Our pitch was number 38 and was a large gravel pitch. No walking through muddy grass to the van.
The site it as good as any other club site. The amenities were very clean, closed from 10. 30 until 12. 00 daily.
With reference to a previous comment about the footpath outside the site. Yes it is not the widest but in my opinion wide enough to take a baby buggy and its only 110 yards long to the junction.
There are two local pubs. The Red Lion - a local free house and very nice inside.
The Robin Hood which is a chain but also very nice. We ate there and enjoyed our food.
There are two bus routes to Cambridge. The number 1 and 3.
The number 3 is the quickest. We purchased a day rider plus ticket and went to Ely for the day which is a worthwhile visit. Got the number 9 bus from Cambridge bus station.
We went punting with the Scudamore company. Normally £16 but we were offered a deal of £10 each which was a bargain and an enjoyable treat.
Cambridge itself is very nice and has lots of nooks and crannies to explore. We walked to Cambridge most days and is 2 miles, about a 40 min walk
There is a Tesco nearby and other local shops and take aways. We had a Chinese from the Golden Pizza which was very nice.
We have not used the car once as the public transport services are very good.

We have just returned from a 5 night stay here, and luckily had good weather ! If it had been raining/wet we would have been ticked off ! Although we had prior notice that steel pegs would be required, even with these, we were unable to peg into the hardstanding for our awning. The gravel is very shallow and appeared to be on top of concrete ! We weren't the only people to have this problem.
The site itself is pleasant, although very shaded by trees-we did ask for a 'sunny' pitch and were informed that luckily there were 2 of these to choose from.
The toilet block and veg prep areas were spotless although as the notice informed us they would all be closed from 10. 30-12. 00noon for cleaning. We thought this was quite early as a leisurely get up and breakfast (we are on holiday, after all) was not normally completed by 10. 30am ! We saw in the comment book (in the information room) that this was noted by someone else, to which the warden had just replied 'there is plenty of signage about the closing times ! This wasn't the point !
We found fellow caravanners friendly enough, but thought the site was too 'regimented' for us. For example: we were shouted at by the warden not to drive on the grass (to site our van) although we were allowed to for parking on it, also, we observed the warden insisting that people with a camper van had to move their chocks about 4 inches and relocated their van so it was right to the exact edge of the hardstanding, signs everywhere telling you to stay in 1st gear (I know how to observe the 5mph speed limit!) and very limited reception opening hours.
Overall we thought the site was OK and focussed on the cleanliness of the toilets etc (which is good) although we noticed someone hadn't cleaned up after their dog on a narrow grass verge, and this stayed there for the duration of our stay!
