I did a review on this being my favourite campsite back in 2009 and I'd like to do another.
I went back again the last time in the summer of 2013 when we had that glorious heat wave. Upon arrival nothing had changed and I like that. Well when I say nothing I mean site wise but I was a somewhat shocked and upset that Keith and his family who I've known for years has retired and I'm gutted I never got chance to say goodbye and thanks for all his years service and great holidays.
Anyway Keith if you ever read this, thanks from the Brown family who you know well. I hope you have a happy retirement.
Right, the new staff. I noticed there was a sign on the lodge stating that there is no one in the lodge until 9 or 10am, I can't remember which but it was 15 minutes past that and the curtains were still closed on the lodge so we were stuck. There was a phone number so I rang and I rang and I rang but nothing. Maybe they were still in bed?
I had two tired kids in the car and two huge dogs in the boot that had travelled for hours and needed to get out. Years ago you could turn up at any time and pitch your tent and the keeper would come to you to collect the funds but not anymore. If your there early your in for a long wait. Keith would always let you in as he was out and about from about 7am so I'm not too impressed so far but I'll give them chance to settle in.
The new management were polite although I couldn't achieve a personal friendliness like I had with Keith. Keith would ask all types of questions but these new people don't bother. Everyone is different I suppose.
The facilities were well maintained as usual and no problems there although they still desperately need a small play area for the tiny kids to keep them happy.
I'm growing a bit worried about the size of the rubbish storage area near the entrance and shower blocks. It's not a nice thing to look out of your tent window. Also I'm not liking the fact that the caravans are creeping into the tent field and spoiling it. They screwed the caravan section up years back by making it all like a gravel car park on a disused council site and they have also made most of it a static site. If more than 10 tourers turn up in one week then they shove them into the tent field. I object to this practice. Why? Give it 10 years and half the campsite will be gone to statics again I assure you. I'll be back to keep you updated as I don't use any other site. Atm. This place is sentimental to me.
Come on council, please sort this out.

I arrived at the campsite after a hard cycling day and stayed for one night. The site was exactly what I needed. The shower block was clean, the showers lovely and warm, the reception staff were friendly, the price was great value and the reception shop was able to replace my gas cannister. The riverside pitch was picturesque and flat. Overall could not have asked for more. Recommended for any tired cycle tourists.

Disappointed with facilities - toilets not clean, showers luke warm and with old plastic shower curtains and £20 per night being a tad excessive, especially as it is out of season and caravan club site charged £17 for top of range facilities.
Feel the site is old and outdated needs a refurb urgently because the position of the site is excellent in an area of outstanding natural beauty and feel sure they will lose custom.
Easy walk into town with plenty of pubs and cafes.
Play area for children close by.

As a member of a bike club, we've been meeting here annually for the past four or five years. The site has always been a nice spot, though on busy weekends they seem to keep on letting folks in until it's almost the case that tents need to be stacked to fit them all in.
The site seems to have had a change of management this year, and was brought up several times over the weekend that the toilets and showers no longer seemed so well serviced, a sentiment that I agree with - whilst they're still better than a lot of other sites I've visited, they're no longer great - at times they become pretty revolting, and regularly run out of toilet paper, etc. The absence of the radio being piped in is also much lamented! A few of the lads who arrived later found that trying to find someone to register with/pay was near impossible, and they pitched up and paid later - luckily for the wardens we're honest folk!
As with a lot of sites, the touring pitches and electric hook ups are all at the beginning end of the field, nearest to the shower block. Why is this such a general occurence? Caravans and motorhomes have their own facilities if they really need them, why not make THEM walk, rather than us schmucks who need them? A little more organisation would also be welcomed - every year it seems some prats want to park up right in the middle of the the route through to the toilet block, making it a tricky walk, particularly when it's the middle of the night and pitch dark. Use your heads, folks, please.
Some very heavy rain over one of the nights we were there created a couple of puddles to rival the smaller of the great lakes, never seen them appear before, just glad I hadn't pitched my tent there. The river Wye, which runs alongside the site (hence the name - see what they did there?) was low on the day we arrived, but after the overnight downpour it was very much in spate, though never threatened to burst its banks. The mud and puddles by the little gate to the shower/toilet block also need attending to - a bit of landscaping or paving would soon fix this issue, I'm sure.
As for location, it couldn't be better, if like us, you like pubs. Plenty of pubs in town to visit, plenty of places to go and grab a meal too - it's a bit of a hilly walk, but only five or ten minutes, though remember to take a torch if you're intending to return in the dark - the path is unlit, and there's a nice slope to fall down; a few of our lads will testify to this, though all survived unscathed!
Another point I'd like to make, and this seems to apply to a lot (most, in fact) of campsites, is the amount of toilet roll that ends up on the floor in the loos. It happens every time I go camping, and I'm fed up with it. Do people drop loo roll all over the floor at home? I suspect not. THEN WHY DO IT AT CAMPSITES? It's not nice, people - get a grip.
Despite the minus points of the site, the plus points more than make up for it, and we'll continue to come I suspect, for as long as they'll have us!

Just spent a mid week break at Wyeside. The staff and facilities were excellent. Toilets, showers, washing up areas and laundry room were very clean with no shortage of hot water. The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful. We stayed on the camping field which we thought was the best spot and there are a limited number of hookups just near the field entrance. The location can't be faulted a lovely level field next to the river and within an easy walk of Rhayader town centre which has a great selection of pubs, cafes, shops and a leisure centre with swimming pool. There is loads to do in the area and our recommendation biking the Elan Valley trail then coming back over the mountain roads. Also Gilgrin Farm to watch the red kites feeding (3pm in the summer 2pm in the winter) is well worth it. Food/pub wise we enjoyed Ty Morgans, The Crown and The Bears Head.

Visited this site 20 yrs ago in stayed the tent field and loved it. This time we had a camper and needed electric. When we booked we were offered hard standing.
When we arrived we were directed away from the main field to what I could only describe as a gravel car park. The main attraction of this site is that it is next to a very pretty river but we had to park rear end on to the river and did not benefit from a view. I was very disappointed.
On a more positive note the toilet block was great, it even had wired radio. Very clean site. Short walking distance through the park gets you to the shops, several pubs and chip shop. All children are encouraged to play in the park and not on the site.
Shame about the gravel and situation of the van and be warned that you need to pay for the hire of the aerial socket or you will not get a TV reception. It would have been useful to know this before.
We will not return unless more electric hook-ups are installed in the large tent field.

Stayed here for just 1 night as we were passing through, nice entrance with secure barrier. Very helpful and friendly warden.
Pitched our tent down the far end of the field, quite level ground, Shower blocks were nice with adjustable temps, could do with being cleaned a little more often.
Overall not a bad site, close to the town so no need to take car and a very nice chip shop nearby.
Our only quarrel was the price as it was £33 for one night without electric hookup.
However we will definitely return soon

Our first camping expedition to a proper camp site with facilities so I have no comparison but we found the facilities available an excellent benchmark for future. The toilets & showers were clean and presentable and we regularly saw staff cleaning up at varying times of day (though it was a male attendant in the ladies block)
My daughter wet the bed on her first night and although the washing machine stated n sleeping bags the warden was more than happy to let me put it in when he knew of our situation. The tumble drier was broken but they also went all out to get it fixed immediately though it was a beautiful day so I managed without.
The tent field is cosy though rather wet following the torrential rains of day one and the river running through the site was rather wild that weekend, though I understand you can swim in it on calmer days.
There was no specific pitch to set up on & we found some people pitched a bit close for comfort. A rather noisy school trip group woke us up at 6am each morning much to our disappointment seeing as our young children were unexpectedly still asleep.
Tip: Insect repellent is a must, the midges were out in force due to the damp weather & the proximity of the river but the little shop did a good line in citronella candles!
There is a children's play area right next door but you need to take small children, they can't wander over on their own.
We were with our own family group and didn't venture far, though we did walk to the Elan Valley Visitor Centre on Saturday which was the longest 3 miles I ever remember doing but well worth it. We also visited the Red Kite feeding centre which was fabulous. Feeding time is 3pm, be early to get a front row seat in the hides.
All in all we enjoyed it so I'll cut the waffle and recommend it for a visit.

Decided to go to rhayader for few days, hadn't been for years.
Wasn't disappointed lovely old town. The camp site was better than I remember, I booked in for one night, was very quiet so able to camp where I wanted, decided by river, watch out for midges on the evening.
Secure site go through barrier onto site. Clean toilets with piped in radio nice showers. Leave your motor for short walk into town lots of pubs to enjoy locals very friendly.
You have elan valley 3 miles away lovely views, plenty of pony trekking and mountain biking places well worth a good weekend away

This site was so easy to find, just straight up the A470 from where we live. Plenty of room for our tents pitched together(4 couples) right on the river Wye it was fabulous.
Ladies shower / toilet block, (think there were 4 showers in there) were clean, plenty of loo roll and plenty of hot water. There is a hair dryer but it was a bit overworked and struggled a bit.
There were reviews saying this was a noisy campsite, we did not find this to be the case.
Close to Rhyader town centre only about 5-10 minute walk, lots of pubs and food outlets. 3 miles from Elan valley and all the unspoilt countryside which is great for walking.
Would definitely return to this site.
