Having just returned from a 5 night stay here we found that this is a lovely site, perfectly situated with each unit being divided by a hedge. Friendly wardens, lots of bins and water points, well stocked shop and fantastic river walks right on the doorstep. The only thing that ruined it for us was the toilet and shower block.
The wardens do their best to keep it clean but unfortunately the facilities are just far too small and in serious need of updating. The block is a neglected looking portacabin and it doesnt get better when you get inside. I am under 5ft 2inches, medium built for height and the loo cubicles were small even for me. When you open the loo door, there is about a two inch gap between the door and the toilet bowl which means lots of manouvering and walking sideways to get inside and get the door shut. Once inside, my shoulders nearly touched each side wall. Of the seven toilets, two did not have locks and a third had its lock hanging on by one screw.
There are 4 showers, one of which was out of order when we got there and still not fixed when we left. The shower cubicles were about the same size at the toilets, with a plastic shower curtain about 6 inches from the door. This meant a very small space for showering, drying and changing in and, I am told by my OH that several men just stepped outside the shower as nature intended and dried in the communal area as they did not have enough room to turn round in the shower. The block had no windows or visible means of ventilation, the only light that came in was through a really dirty skylight in the roof so the air and steam never had a chance to escape.
When I overheard one lady say that the water was too hot to stand under, I decided (taking into consideration all the delights of the showers) that we would turn our handy tent into a wash room and settled for a wash. Believe me, it takes a lot to make me forgo my daily early morning shower, but this loo block did it! My son, who came with us, is 6ft 4 and built like a rugby player. He decided that the only way he would be able to shower was to soap up first and have someone push him in sideways. Not a pretty sight! We did suggest he used the disabled facilities but all the doors had digital code locks on them and this was the only code we werent supplied with. Ironic really as it was the only door that was shut.
I would love to return to this site as the situation is perfect and the rest of the facilities really good. Unfortunately, until they revamp their loo block, it seems very unlikely. At £16 per night, I think this is quite expensive to have such primitive facilities.

After the disaster of Dunbar, it was nice to get to a busy campsite, with plenty of families having a generally good time. Friendly and welcoming, I was given a good reception from the site owners and the other campers.
Generally well-run, some attention does need to be paid to the toilet block, especially when it is busy. The combination locks are pointless and erratic, difficult to get into. More regular cleaning of the block is also encouraged to make them as welcoming as the owners.
Definitely worth going to if you are in the area.

Just returned from a week in the North East on the bank of the Wansbeck. The site is well presented with good access to the surrounding area, walking the dog along the path by the river was very pleasant.
The slush puppy drinks in the shop were a major hit with the children, as was the great play park facilities. In common with other reviewers we were subjected to rave music, but it had stopped by 11. The swearing and general attitude of some other camper's children at the play park meant ours stopped wanting to go.
Our pitch was rather small for the size of unit. The hard-standing itself was quite excellent - being concrete blocks with holes for pegs etc. Certainly the easiest to pitch up on.
The shower block and washingup/laundry room were very outdated, but quite serviceable. It could have done with a really good deep clean though.
As we had booked so far in advance the prices had gone up since we had booked, but our booked price was honoured. For the six of us plus dog and awning it was a very reasonable £112 for 7 nights - at that price you can forgive many of the other faults.
We reversed out car into a tree in the center of Newcastle and broke our towing sockets. We rang a local auto electrical company (Bedlington Auto Electrics) who came to the site within an hour and sorted it out - great service.

I have just returned from a 5 night stay on this site with my 13 year old grandson. It was chosen for it's location not for it's facilities as we tend to prefer to use our own.
The Staff were very helpful and friendly. Our pitch was close to the office and did slope a little but nothing we couldn't put up with especially as water, drainage and rubbish bin were at the front of the pitch.
TV reception was useless with our Status UFO type aerial, but when are they ever any good, so the Satellite dish came in handy. They say that the normal reception is better at the top of the site or with a long pole.
The river and woods were a definite plus with the grandson, even if he did come back covered in mud. I think he would like to go back with better weather and his canoe and our blow up boat.
The Loo Block was clean but the cubicles were a little too narrow for comfort. Locks would be a bonus on two of them however it wouldn't be too difficult to keep the doors shut with a hand. We did not use the showers as the one in the van is better and the changing facilities warmer.
The electricity supply is only 10 amp so with electic warm air heating, electric water heating and general lighting, fridge and so on the low wattage kettle was just too much. This would not present a problem in the summer as heating would not be required. It just means being a little careful with what you use. Resetting the supply is a simple flick of the switch in the box on the post at the back of the pitch.
The site is very sheltered and even with 30mph winds blowing it never reached us in the valley.
The attractions of the area are all within easy reach. Whitley Bay annd Tynemouth are just 15 miles away and the Astley Arms on Marine View, Seaton Sluice has a fantastic 3 meat carvery for £3.50 in the week. Segudunum at Wallsend and Arbeia at South Shields have reconstructions of Roman fort builings (Arbeia is FREE). Bede World is an Anglo Saxon Fort. Newbiggin by the Sea is great for rock pooling and there is the long exspanse os sand at Druridge Bay.
Walkworth Castle is a must and there is Amble Marina as well. Alnwick has that enormous Water Feature, the Tree House, walled garden and the castle itself, if you don't mind the arm and leg to get in. There is also the Hardy Museum for the fishermen and Barters Second Hand Bookshop.
Lindisfarne is another special place for a visit as is Ford and Etal. Take the coast road up to Berwick via Beadnall, Seahouses and Bamburgh. There is plenty to keep anyone busy.
Asda, Lidl, Aldi amd Netto are all within about 15 minutes.
At £12 a night it was fine, I might not be so happy at £16 (after 1st April).
My Grandson said it was the best site or the 3 I have taken him to, 1 a Caravan Club site and the other a small commercial site.
Personally I prefer Caravan Club CL sites however I think this one is fine for out of season use and wonderful for families with children.
The site managers are lovely people with wonderful local accents. It's service with a real smile.

We used this site for a short break between Christmas and new year. The warden is very helpful and friendly, it has a well stocked little shop and the whole site feels well looked after without being too manicured.
The sanitary block could do with updating but everything was clean and there was loads of hot water.
Wansbeck Riverside is a good site, great value for money and in a smashing spot. We'll definitely be returning.

We spent 4 nights here in March and chose this site due to its location to North Shields as our dog had an operation at an animal eye centre.
Our first impressions were not too good, we arrived in the rain and dark on saturday night and were directed to a pitch well away from the main 'hub' of other caravans, it was also quite a sloping pitch and when we first got out of the car there was a tent with a large family to the back of our pitch playing 'rave' music very loud. As a result we chose another pitch and the manager said if noise was still going on at 11pm to give him a ring but thankfully it stopped.
The next day we had a walk around the site and although we still felt isolated in relation to the other touring caravans, it was a very pretty site and the little shop was really well stocked, the best on site shop we have been to so far.
The site is right on the River Wansbeck and its a big river with a lovely walk - you can walk as far as the mouth of the river if you wanted to but we just stuck close by.
My partner used the shower block on the first morning and he was not impressed at all and didnt use them again. He said they were dirty and when he went there it had looked like someone had been washing a pair of boots or something that was extremely muddy as it was all over the place. He had a shower but the water was too hot to stand under and he couldnt adjust the temp so just had to dip in and out.
The massive plus side to this site was the warden who couldnt do enough for us. We rang him several times when we arrived due to the pitch and the noise and he was so helpful. We also ran out of gas and he came up in his van, and did everything for us as we hadnt done it before. And he even opened the shop for us when we wanted a few essentials.
I think in the summer this site would be a lovely base to explore Northumberland, it was dreary weather when we visited which always puts a dampner on things and I would have liked to have been a bit closer to the other caravans as we did feel isolated especially at night but all in all a very pleasant site.

A little gem of a site, the manager very helpful, toilets dated but very clean and plenty of hot water. Access to the river path was ideal for walking the dogs. The beautiful Northumberland coast or if you prefer the Metrocentre, a short drive away. Will be returning in the future.

Just come back had a really good time can not wait to go back kids aged 10, 8 and 2 did not want to come home if it were not for school would have stayed booking up again at the start of the season next year.
Very surprised when arrived was like being in the middle of the country as we drove in through Ashigton then you come to this lovely place. Went to find out were we pitched the wardens were very nice pitched close to the toilets on a good size grassed area with only enough space for 6 tents nice and sculled trees around (spot on).
Toilets and showers are dated but immaculate cleaned loads disabled toilet has shower and baby change faculty's loads of hot water free, they is a wash room with washer and drier ironing board and iron. Small shop on site which stocked the basics (bread, milk, sweets and few toys.) not expensive. Overlooking the shop there is a paddling pool and play park fenced all the way round very safe and lovely area to have a walk and a picnic on the riverside. Didn't see much of the children they were always on the park and in the pool as it was lovely sunny. Only one problem my kids had there Sunderland tops on and there was some teenagers being rather nasty to them as they were from Newcastle but they were not staying on the camp site so everything was alright after that, loads of geordies but ever one we spoke to were lovely people.
Flies were a bit of a problem when we arrived the tent had loads inside as we were putting it up thought this might spoil our break but they never really bothered us much after that we learnt to live with them.
We didn't go out of the site much as the kids were happy and we chilled excellent value for money at £13 pound a night with electric for a 6 person tent and 5 people.
CHEAP CHEERFUL AND NOT FAR TO DRIVE FOR US WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT.

This site is great for those with kids and dogs. The site is very well maintained and staff are super helpful. There is a path alongside the river, right next to the site, where you can walk with dogs off their leads. Along that path there is a lovely little play park complete with paddling pool.
