Found this lovely site on this very website towards the end of last season. Requested a brochure which was sent to us by return, perused it and then did nothing! What a foolish waste of the time between the end of last season and the beginning of this as this site is open all year round.

Started this season at a site in Hexham and following a delightful weekend there, knew we had to get the van out again the following weekend. We chose this site because it sounded truly wonderful and is virtually on our doorstep; only 20 miles from home and 5 minutes from our storage facility.

First impressions upon entering the site were delightful. All the pitches are hedged off, giving a feeling of more privacy as well as clearly defined pitches. So no neighbours encroaching on your little bit of heaven and nobody else’s' children able to ride their bikes in between your van and the neighbours. (Had our awning annexe caved in for us by a child not belonging to us doing this very thing at a site in Yorkshire last year).

Almost all pitches have electric hook-up (only about half a dozen don't and the wardens are doing their utmost to have electric hook-up installed to all pitches. Water points are laid out so that they serve approximately a ratio of 1:4 and bin facilities are the same. These were emptied about 3 times a day as a matter of course; more if necessary.

All of the pitches had a good dose of sun for a good part of the day, but the way the site is laid out, there are also plenty of shaded areas to enjoy, with the whole area being surrounded by woodland. Everything is kept neat and tidy and the outdoor space looks pristine all of the time. There is a notice board at the bottom of the roadway towards the shop, which is full of local information, site news and lots of information about the local wildlife you may see during your stay.

There is a separate field for tents and this is deliberate as the ground here is much more level as many of the pitches are sloping with the site being in a valley. You are very likely going to require your levellers and chocks for levelling up your van. Some pitches are suitable for tents if you require hook up facilities.

The toilet and shower blocks are perhaps the only thing that disappoints being constructed as they are. None the less, they are kept spotlessly clean and are inspected at regular intervals throughout the day, any shortcomings being addressed very quickly. The disabled toilet and shower is of a good size, (we know as we have to use it for our disabled 10 year old), and there is also a laundry room, comprising of a washer and drier. All these facilities are accessed by a code entry system to the doors. The wardens, Ian and Tracey Proudlock, are trying to persuade the owners that it would be prudent to replace these current facilities with new, more eco friendly facilities. As paying guests, we have to agree!

The wardens (aided and abetted by their family), are very probably the friendliest, kindest and most helpful we have encountered to date in over 20 years of caravanning. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for them, they always have a smile for everyone and they will do everything in their power to ensure your stay is nothing other than a highly pleasurable experience. If you require their assistance with anything, just ask. Site rules are few but as with everywhere, should be respected. If you have come for a noisy, boozy weekend, beware! Ian and Tracey are very hot on noise after 11pm to be fair to all on site.

Adjacent to the site, there is a super play park, fenced off and free from dogs, so no fear of your youngster stepping into anything unwelcome. The play park, although not exclusive to the site, it being a public area, is overlooked by the site shop and the wardens keep a very close watch on what is happening within this facility. In the same area and also fenced off from the rest of the play area, is a decent sized paddling pool which is maintained by the site wardens.

The shop on site is well stocked with all the day to day essentials, but don't be afraid to ask for anything you are unable to see; so far I have asked for bread, eggs and soap powder, all of which they supplied but were not on display. The shop is well stocked with tourist information leaflets and the wardens know their area well and can tell you of plenty of places to visit as well as point you towards places to eat. There are also tables and chairs within the shop for teas and coffees and a further couple of tables outdoors. The shop also serves the general public using the riverside walks, woodland and play area. However, the general public are not permitted to enter the site itself.

The beautiful River Wansbeck lies just behind the hedged off area of the site and provides the most tranquil setting for peace and quiet as well as leisurely strolls. Turning left out of the site and following the river path for about 2 miles, will take you to the sandy beaches at the mouth of the river at Sandy Bay.

The small town of Ashington is only a few minutes away from the site and has all the usual small town shops such as Woolworths etc, so easy to top up on anything forgotten or holiday essentials. There is a large 24 hour Asda about fifteen minutes away, via the A189 and towards Blyth. (Turn off for Blyth Beach). Hadrians Wall country is a short journey away and a good day out in some of the most beautiful landscapes. Also well worth a visit and about an hour away is the Island of Lindisfarne, or Holy Island. However, as the Island is accessed by a causeway, check the times of the tide first. If you enjoy city life and nightlife, Newcastle City is approx 20 miles away as is Whitley Bay and its nightlife, in the opposite direction. The coastline in the region is beautiful and there are plenty of places to stop and get out and stroll along the many sandy beaches and bays.

If you find you require caravan or camping bits, there are two caravan and camping places not more than half an hour from the site; UBC near Gosforth is well established and at Cramlington, a new business has opened earlier this year. Although the shop is not as well stocked, this is the nearer of the two. (We managed to leave some essential awning parts behind when in Cumbria last year!)

Dogs will be in their element with all the woodland and riverside walks and are very welcome on leads on the site.

We have just returned from our 5th weekend this season with The Proudlock family and we have chosen to spend our summer fortnight with them too. Although we live nearby, we are far from being original locals and have never explored all that beautiful Northumberland has to offer. We are quite sure, that if like us, you love quiet sites with not too much on site, you will not be disappointed here. Our young daughters adore this place and spend many happy hours making their own entertainment with our supervision.

In summary, a clean, well maintained family and dog friendly site in an idyllic riverside valley location with many local visitor attractions for all the family to enjoy. This location will permit you rest and relaxation in abundance and enough to do to keep the whole family happy for as long as you want to stay in beautiful Northumberland. Friendly, helpful wardens who have many regulars glad to assist other paying guests!

We found this site too late or we would have spent all summer here! How can anyone complain this little site is great, no pub on site, no expensive entertainment just a lovely setting right on the river. Loads of rabbits and ducks, lovely walks all round an enclosed play park and paddle pool, little shop selling all the essentials (its not a supermarket by any means but sells what you need), hot drinks and snacks and toys for the kids at pocket money prices.

Yes the toilet block is dated but this is a camp site not a 5* hotel and we found the only time they were dirty was when one of us went for a shower with our wellies on( sorry to the warden for that) they were cleaned out twice a day every day and loads of hot water FREE. We were there 4 days, kids really didnt want to leave after spending all their time playing in the woods making camps.

Wardens both very helpful giving us a choice of pitches and loads of local advice on best places to eat and visit etc. We only live 17 mile away but will be back next year (early)

We stayed here for 3 nights and used it as a base to drive up the Northumberland coast.

Nice friendly site, very quiet at night even during the August Bank Holiday.

Only slight problem is the toilets - which though clean are in need of updating (basically portkabins).

That minor grip aside, decent little site, we'd visit again.

We decided to stay here for our first time away camping after reading favourable reviews on this site. Decided to stay in the bottom field hoping our 7 month old son wouldn't wake up the whole site. On arrival, we were surprised to be told they had baby changing facilities, all be it combined with the disabled toilet. Five showers each available in the mens and womens and one in the disabled, though be warned the water is very hot thus preventing us from showering our son. Also, toilet block accessible from bottom field via pathway through the woods, which would have been better if it was lit as it was a rather daunting walk through the night, torch or no torch! Apart from that, cannot fault the site, nor the warden, who was very approachable and bent over backwards to help at any opportunity. The shop on site seemed to stock any basic essential you may need and an Asda is only about 3 mile away. Shop no longer does breakfasts due to new Health and Safety rules so don't arrive expecting a cooked breakfast! Very pleasant walks either up or down river, and site very quiet on a night time, you get the impression the campsite is getting orientated towards a family one.
Will definitely be going back.

Just got back from this site. Now I know what your thinking,Ashington!.Well we(wife and 2 girls,12/15) found the area an excellent base for visiting some of the wealth of nice places in the area.Warkworth ,just up the road with an excellent castle the kids will love running around,costs£8 for the family.Good pubs, surprisingly good beaches(avoid Newbiggen!).The site itself is a mixed bag, couple who run it are very friendly but it has to be said it could do with a little care and attention, the toilets are a case in point.Porter cabins with a well past sell by date! Not a pleasant experience but what do you expect for £10 per night. We pitched on the "tent" field, next to the river but also next to the public footpath which runs along it.There is also a set of public toilets near to the entrance, avoid at all costs, enough said! The electric hook up areas looked a little on the tight side but the site was still quite full.Little shop on site but huge ASDA just down the road.Generally, was always you get what you pay for, give it a go the areas worth it but don't expect caravan club quality.

Nt here for the weekend along with a friend in their van. We arrived somewhat late due to various reasons traffic, accidents and heavy torrential rain (no doubt reason for accidents). Phoned to inform the warden of the delay, and they understood the problem and said their would be no problem with arriving late (just after 9pm). The opened up the reception and then we paid the fee for two caravans two nights £37 with no extra charges for awnings. It was then the problems began! Pros of this site. pleasent and tidy with nice walksOn site shop.quite and plenty of water points through out the site Cons: 1. badly sloping pitches2. poor toilet and shower facilities3. electric points buried in the hedge We had been allocated the very last two pitches right at the top of the hill leading into the park. It was now dark and we both had a long drive through heavy rain. We tried to reverse the vans into the pitches and due to cars parked opposite and lampposts it was kind of difficult and I for one just gave up and made do with the position it was in. We also had my daughter and her 9 month child with us and he was badly needing to go to bed (as indeed was I) so unhitched the van and move the car. Tried to push the van on to some bricks to get it level and slipped on the wet grass. This caused the front of the van to be dragged towards me and then proceed to run down the pitch towards the water outlet which was in brick housing. The van smashed into this causing damage to the van (broken and split the front near side area).> the Campers opposite stood and watch as I and the wife tried to halt the van, but was impossible due to the incline and wet grass( I if situation was reversed would have instantly ran across to help) After pushing the van straight THE ONLY WAY to get the van sitting near level is to put a wheel on breeze blocks (plenty laying around the pitch no doubt due to others having problems), and the only way to do this was to us the car to push the van back. I manage to get the van sitting as best as I could and it was almost now near 10pm. My fried had similar problems but just left it till the next day to level the van. It was about 6 inches to raise the wheel in order to get the van level!. The next day the warden called on us to say there had been complaints about the noise when we had arrived. Now I fully understand and respect the rules about noise, but with the late arrival and the problems we had we did or best to keep the noise down. The site is built on a steep slope ONLY a few of the pitches are level some are not as bad as others, but the ones we had (29 and 30) are extremely sloped I complained that this was not suitable to have for caravan’s (or indeed tents I would have thought) and especially knowing someone was going to arrive in the dark, he just walked away. The toilets are as mentioned before are inadequate for a site of this size. It is a port cabin affair with a door entry code. The showers are hot but built for people no taller than 5ft (the nozzle cam to my chest. I am 6ft 3) and there is no room in these what so ever. Your clothes get soaked as there is two hooks behind the door and that is all there is. The floor gets covered in water and trying to change means your clean clothes also get soaked. The only place to put any sort of cleaning products is on top of the shower, this are is very small and once you have placed shower gel, shampoo ect on there I had no where to put my glasses, this meant leaving them on the floor (toiletries not glasses) trying to have a wash and bend down to have a decent shower was not the easiest thing in such a small confined space. It was also rather dirty when I was in (about 9am) and the floors quickly get covered in mud. The water though is nice and hot and the toilets bowls are clean, but for these prices I would have expected something better than what would be a temporary facility at a out door event of some sort. I have been on cheaper sites and had better toilet facilities than what was provided here. The on site shop is not too bad according to the wife and daughter, they sell the basic things and prices are not that bad. Nice walks along the riverbank and the actually lower end of the site would be great, but these sloping pitches are a disgrace and all it would need is to get a JCB in and make them level (obviously that would mean spending some money .and the council looks like they do not do that). The location of the actual site is good for visiting the surround area. We went to Alnwick and the castle, and had a great day there though a bit shocked at the £8.50 entrance it was in the end worth the money. There are plenty of good local shops about 5 minutes away from the site, including an Asda that is open to 10pm. Also a good few take-always of various sorts If you can get a bottom pitch near the reception, then your on a winner, If not (and if your going ask the location of your pitch) and you don’t mind spending time trying to get a van level on a 6 inch incline.then go for it. I for one will never go back to this site unless there is a dramatic change in the toilets and the slope of these pitches. It a shame really, as it has the potential of being a really good site, but for the sake of some money spent on correcting these downfalls it will (in my opinion) get bad reviews from others and scare people away.

A bit cramped on the tent field, would hate to go when it`s busy, no views from the tent apart from other holiday goers and trees. The public footpath running directly beside the field is busy and noisy with dog walkers and drunks coming back from the pub a mile away. Access to the footpath is through an unlocked gate with public toilets outside the gate. Campsite toilets are a walk through a wooded dark hill and the wife and children wouldn't use them on a night as they felt insecure. Toilets were clean with showers, wash room and dryer. The on site shop was well stocked and papers could be ordered the day previous. The site staff and warden were friendly and helpful were ever they could be. The river walk had good scenery but was used a lot by dog walkers who would let there dogs run free and joggers. The play park attached to the site was great for the kids during the day but groups of local kids used it on the night for a hangout.
Kids loved the stay but not what we are used to, would of been nice to have some kind of view from the tent.

We were looking for a reasonably priced site to enable us give our five grandchildren the opportunity to experience camping.  Our main area of concern was.would the reasonable price also lead to the camp site being abused by those only interested in drinking, loud music and general bad behaviour?  This often seems to be the case and also often ties up with a lack of campsite rules or a lack of will to enforce those rules by the warden.  However, the previous reviews seemed to confirm that this was not the case and after contacting the warden, we decided to take the chance.

Twice other campers complained about  issues with two separate yob culture campers, who were very quickly put right by Ian the warden and who obviously realised that he meant business, as one left (bewailing the fact that the previous wardens had been friends and didn't see anything wrong with their behaviour) and the other buckled down immediately, much to the relief of the majority of campers.  Presumably any others around who had had thought of behaving similarly quickly changed their minds!

The result is that undesirables are quickly being weeded out and the park is fast becoming a very desirable one for families.  So many parks have become really expensive which cuts down on the length of time families can afford to stay, so it is a blessing to find one of this quality, in an area with so many attractions and good beaches.
Hats off to Ian and Tracy who are doing a sterling job and keeping families at the focus of their plans.  Thank you.

The campsite was really full, but they squeezed us on.  It was my first time camping in the UK and we had a wonderful weekend.

The site itself is really picturesque and the caretakers are friendly and accommodating.  The facilities were more than adequate and clean.

We had a really good time - and no midges to speak of!  Will return again this weekend

Just came back home from a lovely stay at this site, there was 3 families who went and what a good time we have had, the site is very nice and pitching ground was perfect for tents (no lumps and bumps) the warden and his wife are really friendly (the lads went to the local pub with him to watch the England match) and sorrily got beat.

There is a great park on site for kids with a paddling pool and a well stocked shop, there is also lovely walks along the river and to top our weekend off we have had fab weather. We have booked to stay on this site again to go in a fortnight on the same pitches we had.

The only drawback to this site is the toilet block they are very dated with no windows and 4 showers so you can imagine the heat in there, the water is very very hot too so be careful.

All in all we had a great weekend and are going back. Enjoy!
