Stayed over night  campsite is in a lovely position, the wardens are great and friendly. It seemed to be quite noisy up til about midnight then another disturbance at 3 am noisy people. Showers and toilets ok, if a little dirty and neglected.but my lad enjoyed it and thats what counts.

Where to start ? We are a family that are completely new to camping, having only put the tent up recently for the first time in the garden for a practice run.

So with the good weather lasting it was an ideal opportunity to go camping for real.

We scoured the UK Camp Site for somewhere to camp that was fairly local so that we could travel on a Friday night and have enough daylight hours to put the tent up (needed for the lack of practice) !

Northumberland or the Lakes seemed a fairly obvious choice. However, the combination of everybody else taking advantage of the good weather, taking so long to go through the all of the campsites and the reviews, and trying to book places at the last minute we were left with a fairly limited choice.

Wansbeck Riverside Park appeared to look interesting for location and places nearby to visit (Alwnick Castle - home to Harry Potter movies, Bamburgh and Seahouses all nearby), the surrounding views, the good reviews on UKCS, and the facilities available, so we contacted them and booked to stay on the Friday and Saturday night.

So with the car packed, off we set. Upon arrival we were very impressed with the scenery and the layout of the Park, one review likened it to a French campsite, and having been to France every year over the last six years with Canvas (staying in the large statics) we totally agreed.

The wardens were extremely helpful and gave us a choice of pitches (divided by hedging) or the field by the river, they told us that they tend to keep the pitches for families and the field for the potentially 'noisy people'. We looked around and I wasn't sure if the pitches were big enough for our tent (Vango Diablo 600) so I made the decision to opt for the field and run the risk of being with noisy people for a couple of nights. On reflection, and a bit of measuring, the pitches would have been big enough !

However, the field was very quiet with friendly neighbours and gave wonderful views of the river and the valley as the sun went down.

Obviously being a 'first timer' we were concerned about the toilet and washing facilities which did appear a little dated from outside but once inside they were clean. tidy, and fully functional with plenty of hot water. Dishwashing and laundry facilities the same. So there's nothing to worry about from that aspect.

The shop had all of the basics, but if you require much more there was an Asda superstore not far away.

The playground was good for the children and was fenced off to keeps the dogs out. There was also a paddling pool which was clean and with the warm weather getting full use !

Would definitely stay again, and use as a base to explore more of Northumberland.

Our first attempt at camping and we could not have picked a friendlier place, the people who run this site are very kind and helpful. I didnt see litter around at all the toilets and showers are kept clean hot water on tap 24/7. Set in a lovely riverside location if you have children there's lots  to keep them happy. Thankyou for a great start

What a lovely well run site, level pitches with plenty of space, great for the kids. It has everything park ,paddling pool and a lovely river. The family that run the site are very nice people will be returning soon. The toilet blocks were always kept clean, the shop was well stocked with essentials. I felt very comfortable and safe as this site is tucked away in the middle of nowhere but still accessable to Ashington town.

We booked a pitch for a couple of days and stayed 10! Wardens are fantastic, very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Setting is beautiful and lovely walks by the river. I read the previous review and agree the toilet block does look off putting BUT it is beautifully clean and showers are free and always plentiful hot water. There are also two washing machines, iron and ironing board.

We stayed over the busy Easter period and had no problem getting a pitch by the river. The shop doubles as a small cafe (excellent cooked breakfast can be ordered night before) and supplies all essentials.
Although we don't have children it would be a great place for families with a large children's play area nearby. Despite the camp being full it was a very quiet and peaceful place and we will certainly be staying again.

Site is a good base for exploring Northumberland and the town of Ashington is within walking distance.

We have just spent three nights at this site, it was great. The site was clean and well kept, the pitches were large and secluded with hedges surrounding the site. There was a small well run well stocked shop and a cafe, where hot drinks etc were available. The shower block was old and slightly cramped but there was plenty of hot water and lots of constant pressure so washing away the days grime was not a problem. We had three children , 2 dogs four adults two tents and a gazebo in our party and everyone of us had a great time. the wardens were friendly, helpful and made you feel very welcome. Nothing was too much trouble even at 10.30pm when the electric tripped?, which was speedily fixed with a smile. The park is well laid out and the river and walks are stunning. We will be returning to this site soon. Many thanks for a great stay.

We arrived at this site late at night, about 15 mins before it was due to be locked up. We got lost and the wardens wife kindly drove out to meet us to show us the way, so I was impressed by how kind and helpful the owners were. They said that this was their first busy season, so I assume that the management has changed since one of the earlier reviews. The gates now get locked at 11pm and not at 10pm.

My first impression of the overall setting and scenery was fantastic. However the shine wore off as the downfalls became obvious:

The pitches are mostly on a steep incline and it is impossible to get your caravan level, one caravanner had to use breeze blocks under his wheels! All of the level pitches are reserved in advance by regulars, so if you are a first time visitor, you have no hope of getting the best level spots by the river.

The site is council owned and the toilet block is nothing more than an extra large porta-loo... the type you see at big organised events. But these porta-loos looked like they came from the woodstock festival! But 1 poor toilet block between 40 pitches and numerous tents just isn't enough.

There is a tiny shop selling a mish mash of 'essentials' with a few toys and bits'n'bobs for kids. This also doubles up as a bit of a coffee shop. But it is really limited for space and ther isn't much choice.

Although the site was in a lovely setting and the managers were kind, I'm afraid we won't be returning.

We have just returned from an excellent break in a tent at this site. Most of the pitches are in individual hedged off bays which are on a concrete grid. You can get your pegs in but you do have to hunt around for the holes in the grids. There is an excellent park right next to the campsite with a paddling pool and the whole site is sheltered by trees.
The couple that run it go out their way to offer any assistance they can.
Only downside was there were no plugs to plug your hairdryer into, and I being just over 5ft could not see in the mirrors. The Warden said the shower block is due to be replaced over the winter.

We were in Northumberland to visit family. The site was ideal, very well kept combined with very helpful wardens. The toilets let the site down, however they were always clean with plenty of hot water available.
The comments about the pitches being hard to peg into are valid, but we managed to work round this. Overall this site offers exactly what it says it does and we will definitely be using it again next year. By the way, the weather was exceptionaly good for the whole week.

Not impressed, although the site was nice, you got locked out at 10pm and wasn't told about it also on two occasions our electric was unplugged and not replugged in. Reported to warden who wasnt really interested.
