We have just spent a weekend at Goosewood holiday park and have had a fabulous time. Myself and my husband and daughters aged 9 and 12 gave our van the first run out of the season and didn't want to go too far from home but the hour's journey was well worth it. The staff are friendly and helpful as soon as you check in and the pitches are well spread out and spacious. The park has its own wood and fishing lake and an excellent adventure playground which was great for our older children who aren't always catered for. We had a lovely view of the lake and could also see the playground giving kids the freedom to go off and make friends. The shower and toilet block was clean and modern and the playbarn with pool tables and video games would come in handy if the weather was poor. Being able to hire the site's health suite privately was fab. For £15 all four of us had great fun in the spa pool and hot tub for 45 minutes. We loved the wildlife on the park and saw goslings and ducklings recently hatched as well as squirrels, toads and rabbits! The site is near lots of lovely villages but also close to both Clifton moor and Monks Cross retail and leisure parks with plenty of shops and restaurants. There are park and ride facilities close by if you want to avoid the parking problems in York although we didn't venture into the city centre. The site has recently been purchased by the Flower of May group and they are in the process of creating a bigger reception and larger site shop which I'm sure will only enhance the already great facilities at Goosewood. We can't wait to visit again and would definitely recommend the park to families and couples for a lovely countryside getaway.

We recently stayed at Goosewood during the Easter School holidays. We were a bit apprehensive after reading some of the more recent reviews. Goosewood is a small site with a mixture of wooden lodges with static and touring caravans. The touring area is at the front of the site with lodges dotted around the back of the lake. Private static caravans are right at the rear of the site hidden by the trees.
Most of the touring pitches are on paved slabs with a smaller slabbed area attached with gravel around to allow for pegging your awning. A small number are all gravel, huge and tend to be nearest to the lake.
Interestingly the site was taken over in November 2008 by May Holiday Parks and an improvement programe is already in evidence. They are already in the process of building a new reception/laundry which is attached to the back of the main washroom facilities. As a result there is no on site laundry at present but they have made an arrangement with another site nearby to use their facilities if you wish.
There are also several new plots marked out for more lodges.
The main washroom (about a 3 minute walk from any pitch!) is a bit old fashioned but was kept clean during our stay. It had several toilets plus 3 shower cubicles and 4 wash basins. The only time I saw washrooms dirty was after someone had waked in with very muddy shoes and proceeded to tap dance all over the floor and then not bother to clean it up. To me Mud and camping go hand in hand but you just have to do your bit and clean up your own mess! Water was always hot and temperature was adjustable - which is ideal when you have kids. Plenty of room in shower for all your stuff behind the curtain and it doesn't get wet!
The second smaller 'Chapel' washrooms were located right in the middle of the touring area. It consists of 2 ladies and 2 gents self contained shower rooms, these had a big fully enclosed shower, plus toilet and changing area with heated towel rails. These are brilliant if you have a couple of kids to wash and shower at the same time. They also had key code entry to stop kids using them when playing in the park. There are also 2 separate toilets. The washing up area was also located here as well as the waste water point.
Opposite the entrance to the site there is a pig farm so it was inevitable that the smell did waft into the site quite a lot. So if you don't like the smell of the country then maybe you should stick to sites in cities to avoid any offensive smells!
The site was situated in a good position for visiting all the local attractions. A large Tesco is on the York Ring Road - a 10 min drive away. We would highly recommend using the Park and ride scheme when going into York as parking in the city centre is more expensive and the traffic really bad.
My two children (7 &13) absolutely loved this site. The park is one of the best I have seen with equipment to suite little ones as well as the bigger ones. They also loved the lake with all the ducks that stroll around the site looking for a any bread that might be going. But watch out for the duck poo! If you have kids that like fishing then they will love this site too.
During our stay we had no problems with noise and all the kids left the park as soon as it got dark. It will be interesting to see what other changes the new owners make in the future.
To sum up It would be fair to say that this site is more a 3/4 star than 5, and the cost should reflect this! However we enjoyed our time there and would go consider going back in the future.

Just returned from Goosewood after having a super Easter there. Site in process of some alteration but it did not affect our stay in the slightest. Kids loved it with playground and playing field also added bonus of a great fish and chip van on Saturday nights really good value and freshly cooked food. We found the staff and the site to be great and would return.

What a truly lovely site. Not far from York. Supermarket close by. Amenities were clean. Site spotless. Staff brilliant and very friendly. In the process of building a new shower block but we weren't disturbed at all. Lots of people fishing on the lake. A good wooded area to walk the dog. Will definitely be returning and recommending this site to friends. We had a great time.

We visited this park as our friends said they enjoyed it. I had read the views on here and even though they are some negatives I went with a open mind. We are new to camping so our views are based on this and only been our third place to visit.
First views of the park are it looked quite large and had lots of pitches that were yet to fill. I had been asked on the phone if I wanted to be near the park and that's were are pitch was. It was a large pitch and I did not feel I was too close to the vans on the next pitch.
They have a small shop on the site that seemed to stock essentials, even tins of larger. You have to order a paper for morning and I think they only have them on a weekend.
The staff were very friendly and they were there to help if you needed them. You could hire the spar for £15 a family of four for 45 minutes. We did not try this so can not comment.
There is building work as you enter the site. I think it is going to be the new reception area. I under stand that the site has been taken over by The flowers of May. The old reception does also have a ramp into so it was wheelchair friendly. The site has a road all the way around it which is flat so handy for disabled there too. It has a one way system around the park and yes you do have to pass the children's park on entrance.
At the side of the site there is a woods that has a top and bottom entrance. My dogs loved it here in the woods and we saw rabbits and squirrels too, nothing too spectacular but we love to see nature as it is lol. It has large tall trees like the fairy tale woods and its the best place so far that we have taken the dogs. My 15 year old did not venture far but not many 15 year olds do lol. My 10 year old loved the kids park and made lovely new friends. There were a lots of children playing in the park but just enough so everyone got on.
You never got the feeling of over crowding but saying that it was March when we went. The Toilets consisted of 2 toilets male and female and 4 toilets / showers male / female. The toilet / showers needed a code to enter and have a small heater to warm your towels on. They were clean and cleaned daily. A mop was also between the 2 so you could mop after your shower. The water was hot and consistent, the cubicles spacious and plenty of room to hang your dry clothes. The waste Grey/chemical was also in this area and was clean with a flush system. We were quite close but the furthest away was about 3 minutes, so not that far really. They seam to cater well for the motor homes on this site too.
Goose wood also has a large lake which is adjacent to a small field, I think this is for ball games not really sure. There were many fishing here and you had to have your own license and then pay a small fee to fish. My son said that they were many fish caught the first day we were there but the day that he went to fish they must have been in hiding lol. This is the main negative I have about the park. All around the lake they have many ducks, geese which look very pretty and lots of children were throwing them bread. Unfortunately this also meant there were heaps of duck doo about. I know this makes me sound like a snob but I would not have liked it should my kids have been younger. My son had it on his top as well as his joggers and he was just fishing.
If I am going to be truthfully at £56 for 2 nights I don't think we will return either. We were allowed to stay till 2pm free of charge on our site should no one have booked it the day after but the initial price we thought was a bit OTT for this site.
So we were glad we tried it but don't think we will be going back.

Having booked Goosewood for a quiet and relaxing break for New year I feel I must write a review of this site to allow others see what one of the top 100 in Britain has to offer.
We`arrived the day after boxing day to a well laid out reception and checked in Ok with high hopes and a smile upon or faces. Upon driving past the barrier gate the smiles soon disappeared
Pitches are small, very close together and the majority are just paving slabs. Roads are narrow/potholed and in a poor state of repair. On reflection if you wish to spot hobby caravans in various levels of disrepair and covered in years of mould along with the awnings attached and the mould on them this is the place to go.
Arrived at pitch in front of one of the said hobby caravans to hear the dulcet tones of bass music. This was then fortunately replaced by the yapping of a Dog that had been left in said caravan for several hours.
To cheer ourselves up and make the most of a bad situation my partner went for a shower and returned saying I am not using that! Smelly/dirty/no hand soap and 20 years out of date.
Decision time in our caravan stay or go?
At around 5pm the bass music returned with a smettering of robbie williams, we contacted the wardens twice throughout the evening who were as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
We managed to book elsewhere for the next day and had a beer listening to Robbie Rock DJ. This went on until early hours of the morning and was then again replaced by various people singing and screaming their way back to their own hobby.
Packed up the next day to leave and went to reception to tell them of our complaints and that we were leaving and they said they went up twice and could not hear anything, this being despite the bass vibrating so much wine bottles were rattling in my caravan. I asked for a refund for the remaining nights and was told they don't keep cash and I would have to contact Head office _this is funny as they took my money by card so cant they do refunds?

Booked this site due to it being one of the Best of British sites and we wanted a site close to York for the St Nicholas Fayre.
We booked onto a fully serviced pitch due to the time of year and was pleasantly surprised with pitches which overlooked the fishing lake so was very nice and tranquil, except we was disturbed one night by a big party at one of the holiday lodges across the lake which although not the sites fault felt they could have asked the group to quieten down as the noise went on until late.
The health suite and main toilet blocks were closed sue to winter, therefore we were asked to use the facilities near reception, which were fine 2 showers and 2 toilets in both the men's and ladies however they were a very long walk from our pitches.
I agree with previous reviews about the smell you get from the local pig farm, at times this was very strong and not nice at all.
The staff on site were very friendly and location of the site was very good also.

Feel I must leave a review as I used UK campsite, with others, to make a choice to visit Goosewood.
We visited for 2 nights at the end of August 2008 and probably had the worst pitch on the whole site, it was near the entrance and behind the Spa, so the smell of chlorine and noise from the pumps was constant.
There were however some very nice pitches overlooking the fishing lake but these were only few and a lot of other pitches where surrounded on all sides by either caravans or motorhomes. It appeared the nicer pitches where for those seasonal pitches.
The children's play area was the best I have seen in all the sites we have visited.
Used the local bus service to travel into York on the Sunday, out of the site entrance and less than 10 min walk, had an excellent day.
The toilets near the entrance seem in need of an overhaul and the others towards the centre of the site, despite having a key pad for entry, where not clean and I am pleased we have on board facilities to use.
The elsan disposal area needed a good clean but the motorhome service point was fine.
The shop was disappointing and even though did stock the basics, I was surprised that there was not more available , especially with the number of statics and lodges there. However they did give a good map when we arrived explaining where all the supermarkets and pubs where locally.
Overall we, as a family, where not impressed and this certainly was not one of the Best Of British in our eyes.
At over £50 for a pitch with electric for the 2 nights,it was a great disappointment and we shall certainly not be returning

I absolutely love Goosewood!
My parents have a seasonal pitch there and have been there for around two years. They are both up there every weekend and holidays. So having the van up there is perfect, and hour's drive from Sheffield and a free van for the weekend - result!
We have now invested in our own van and for a maiden voyage are going to Goosewood to surprise my dad for his birthday.
The site is brill. The play area is great for the kids, (and drunken adults - although watch out for the wardens!) the spa is lovely (although the price has gone up to £15 for an hour) and the wardens are great. They can't do enough to help, and Jackie - one of the wardens mother is a legend - got a van next to my parents, love her to bits!
The site itself is brill, the toilets are cleaned at regular intervills, the grass is well maintained and the pond is a lovely walk. The duck have also taken a shine to my parents van and are there every morning around 9am to get feed!
I can't fault the site, but the only problem now I expect all sits to be like Goosewood!

This is an excellent site.
The staff are very friendly and helpful.
We were greeted with a friendly smile and someone who sited our caravan for us then went through the local walks and other useful tips.
It was a pleasure to visit the shop as the staff always had time to natter. Nothing was too much trouble.
The childrens play area was amazing. A huge adventure play area with every feature you can imagine plus on top an indoor play barn. There is also an ajoining wood for dog walks and the boys loved playing Robin Hood etc.
There are 2 loo/shower facilities, Both clean and well maintained.
Also a very well stocked information point and a chip van visits twice a week.
Would love to go back.
