A lovely site which we would definitely like to visit again. The friendly wardens work hard to keep the site clean and tidy, and the toilet block is immaculate.
We visited with family members in 2 other caravans and we all enjoyed our stay. Carsington Water visitor centre is perfect for a day out, with 2 fantastic play areas, one for toddlers and another for older kids.
There are various shops there, an outdoor shop, gift shop, ice cream, etc. Kayaks and bikes are available for hire, and if you bring your own kayak you can launch it for £5 for the day, including parking. Parking alone is £4. 75 for the day.
At Matlock Bath, about 10 miles away, there's Gulliver's Kingdom theme park and also The Heights of Abraham which we visited. It is advisable to get there early as the car park got really full, and as the entrance fee to The Heights is quite expensive it's best to go early to make sure you get your moneys worth! The entrance fee includes your cable car fare, underground tours and other entertainments and a super adventure playground.

Our first visit to this site which had just re-opened with fully refurbished shower block which piped music throughout the whole block.
The showers were spacious, hot, clean and plentiful. The heating in the building was almost too hot although it was great to dry off in warm surroundings.
One thing which would have improved it would be that the shower heads could have been fixed a little further away from the wall so that you don't bump into the piping/wall, but this is being a bit picky!
There is also a drying room which is very useful for drying off walking gear etc.
The wardens were very friendly and extremely helpful.
It was good value for money as we were able to take advantage of the saver offer for mid week bookings.
There were no pubs nearby but there is a well planned visitor centre at nearby Carsington water where you can enjoy shopping and a nice meal after a gentle saunter or more energetic cycle ride around the lake. Nb make sure you see the lovely view of the lake from the campsite (just through the trees behind the site reception. )
Although I am not sure if we will visit again because we prefer a more open campsite with the chance of enjoying the sun (when it shines). It is however a good base to explore the southern part of the peak district.

Lovely site, but be aware of pollen coming off the conifers, which coated our unit, but luckily not sticky. This is my second stay on this site, and impressed with the refurbishment of the toilet block. However they have done nothing about the low water pressure at shower heads, ie: increase height of header tank or install pump. Weekends and school holidays gets very busy, with families from urban areas bringing with them their habits of shouting normal conversation, and unruly offspring, and they seem unable to adjust to the tranquillity of the site. One annoying aspect is the behaviour of cutting across pitches via the many tracks made between the tree areas, and would suggest some of these need stopping up with fencing. One toilet block for 130 pitches, and usual supplies including papers at reception.

We stayed here in mid September 2011 and the site was fully booked. We arrived at 5pm on Friday and there was still a choice of pitches available. The wardens were very helpful and friendly.
The site has both grass and hardstanding pitches but as it was raining when we arrived and had been for the past few days we were asked to use a hard standing pitch. All pitches would accommodate a caravan, awning and car but some pitches were larger than others.
The site is quite long with lots of small clusters of pitches so it did not feel crowded like sites such as Chatsworth can. Some of the pitches are slightly sloping but nothing a few pieces of wood could not fix.
The site has two really nice playareas, one for younger children and one for older ones - our children (4&6) loved the larger of the two play areas.
The site has a nice little shop and an information kiosk. You can order newspapers. A fish and chip van comes on a Friday from around 5-7 which was nice and saved cooking on arrival.
At the top end of the site is a nice wooded area and the site has plenty of dog walk areas.
The toilet block is being re-furbished in winter 2011 but was very clean as you would expect with a caravan club site with plenty of showers, private cubicles and toilets. The block also has a pot wash area, parent/ child room and laundry.
The site has plenty of water and recycling points.
A short walk takes you to Caringston Water which has a visitor centre and fantastic children's play area. You can see Carsington Water from the site. Or a nice lazy morning.
Normal check out time was 12 but we did ask to stay and were able to stay until 2pm which made f
A lovely site to which we are already planning to return.

My daughter and I stayed here in our folding camper last week, it was our second visit and we decided that the site is close to our personal ideas of perfection.
It's easy to get to (follow guidance about routes though - satnav will take you to the wrong place and other routes may prove a problem when towing) yet very, very quiet, the views and surroundings on site are lovely,
The facilities are excellent and immaculate and the wardens so friendly and helpful. There's a small shop in reception selling sweets and ice creams and enough basics to be able to rustle up a meal.
There's an information room with tourist information about the myriad different things to do near reception too.
The site has security barriers, and is beautifully maintained with mainly hardstanding pitches(steel awning pegs essential), which are a very good size. These are grouped beautifully so that even though the site is quite big, it never feels like that.
My daughter loves the fact that its size means there are usually enough other children to play with. It has two play areas, one for tots and the other for older children. Most children there have a bike with them.
There are lovely dogs walks around the edges of the site, with bins at appropriate intervals. Although it is along the ridge of a hill, the trees around the site mean that it does not seem at all exposed or windy.
There are lots of things to do in the area to suit all budgets, tastes and the weather. We enjoyed pottering around Ashbourne, which is a pretty little town with a good number of independent shops to make it not like every other town in the UK. Choice of waitrose, sainsbury's and coop for shopping here.
Belper, about the same distance in the other direction, has a morrisons - their petrol prices were very good while we were there - and a good range of other shops as well as the converted mill just on the edge of town which houses a variety of shops and has its own parking.
It seems that parking costs across the area have been standardised and start at £1. 20 for up to an hour £1. 90 for up to two. It's pay and display and you need the correct change. We went to go to the Carsingtom Water visitor's centre, but we didn't stay when we saw that parking started at £2. 50 and many of the activities after that would have a high cost.
This was at the main visitor's centre, there are other car parks and I don't know whether they charge or not, but we thought it was a bit steep when it was going to be followed by shelling out for other activities.
We didn't eat out because of the dogs, but there seemed to be a huge range of choice in both Ashbourne and Belper (which has Mac Donald's and Subway chains) of good pubs, take aways, indian, chinese, thai and european eateries as well as chip shops.
Matlock Bath may have more chip and sweet shops than I have ever seen in one small place - it seems like dozens! They have their illuminations in September/October which we visited last year and are quaint and pretty rather than Blackpool 'glitz'.
We had a lovely holiday and I have no doubt we will be going back.

Visited the site for 1 night for a 'shakedown' trip in new van.
Found the site wardens very friendly and helpful in directing me to park outside the toilet block and then look for pitch. Found a lovely pitch that was sloping at the back but apart from adjusting the jockey wheel height did not need to adjust the side to side level.
Easily accessible electric hook-up point and just within 20 metres was a fresh water and disposal point.
I really like the secluded feel to the site which is not visible from the road and is very well kept in terms of grass cutting and rubbish collections etc. There appear to be lots of walks from the site.
The toilet block had good supply of hot water on showers with tap rather than button and although not the newest of blocks it was certainly clean and functional.
The surrounding area is lovely and really enjoyed the weekend.
The only complaint was the rudeness of a family who decided to walk through my pitch (I mean literally through my pitch between my car and caravan) as a shortcut to get to the next 'pitching area' on the Saturday afternoon and that was not the site's fault.
I would certainly go back and would like to spend a few days longer.

This is a fantastic site. Pitches are set in small groups among pine trees offering shelter from the wind but without hiding the sun. It is a well run site with very friendly and helpful wardens. The toilet block is due for replacement for 2012 which will improve facilities as present single block is showing its age, but even so is still much better than many encountered elsewhere. Ashbourne and Matlock are only a few miles away with good shops catering for every need and full of attractions such as Dovedale with its stepping stones to Matlocks cable cars. Alton Towers under half hour away

Me and my family have just returned from 5 nights at Blackwall Plantation this is my first time to a caravan club site and it certainly will not be my last this site was absolutely amazing as a member it was so easy to book on arrival everything went smoothly the wardens were all very friendly and could not do enough to help.
On arrival we were told to park outside the toilet block and have a walk around to see where we would like to pitch so this made everything easy.
We were a little concerned after reading on here that there were no pitches with sun this is untrue every pitch as the sun at some point of the day and as with anywhere some pitches are better than others for it. The views are beautiful dog walks in abundance and they are really really nice there is even a viewing area of Carsington Resevoir which is lovely to watch the sunset. We went here with me my husband my 16year old son and 7 year old daughter and all of us thoroughly enjoyed it we even ended up booking an extra night.
The only downside is there is only one toilet block which shuts for an hour in the morning. I know they need cleaning and they certainly do a good job of this but when they are closed there is nowhere else to go which sometimes can pose a problem and although I never had a problem, my husband got a little fed up with queueing for showers and toilets in a morning.
Overall this did not spoil our time in anyway and we cannot wait to go back here

Lovely site. You could be in Switzerland with the pine trees.
Beautiful views over Carsington water which is easily within walking distance, but uphill on the way back.
Been with our children and bikes many times and all love it. Teenage kids arent bothered with the play areas but love playing in the woods.
Fab chippy van calls Fridays which is our usual arrival day so an easy tea.
Locally there is so much to do. Outdoorsies can cycle around the lake, about 9 miles, or hire a canoe. Dovedale and the Manifold are only a short distance away. Then there's Matlock with all the Bath's trappings. Also Ilam and Chatsworth are both nearby if you crave a bit of culture. The Peaks have a bit for everyone.
You wont regret a visit!

Just returned from Blackwall after 2 nights stay with friends. We chose the site as it is only an hour away from home, and a good location for walking.
Check-in was straight forward, we were shown a map of the site, told not to exceed 5mph, and as per usual cc routine, left to find a pitch. We drove nearly to the top end and found 2 quiet and spacious pitches - for some reason everyone seems to want to pack themselves around the toilet block! The toilet block itself is adequate, water hot for showers (no push buttons !)and clean. We soon got used to the sound of pine needles and the odd cone landing on the roof of the van! Dont think a lot of pitches would see much sunshine, but was not really an issue in October.
Carsington Water is an enjoyable walk or cycle round, (8 miles ish the whole reservoir) and is easy walk from the site. Matlock, Crich, Chatsworth etc are all nearby to visit. Probably not an ideal site for much within walking distance.
We enjoyed our stay, and will return again for a short break, our only criticism is we all felt the wardens a little abrupt on a couple of occasions - perhaps its just us? Anyway, they seemed to work very hard all day on this busy site.
