Our visit was over Easter so the site was busy but despite this there was enough space to spread out, most of the pitches were generous and at this time all hardstanding. Surprisingly the site was nice and quiet in the mornings and we managed to get a lie in.
As said the woodland walk is lovely with smashing views but I do agree about the dog mess.
There is only one toilet block and the showers were stretched in the mornings this didn't bother us as we went later on in the day. The fact that there was only one block did make it a little difficult at cleaning time 10.30 to 12 especially on leaving day when the leaving time is before 12.
The reception sells essentials and ice creams.
There is loads of space for children to play around the site and up and down the banks it is a real adventure playground.
We did see though a lot of children playing ball and frisby often with parents between caravans, (parent's please take note) it's awkward to have to ask them to stop but when you get a ball dent or scuff your caravan it isn't easy getting it fixed.
We would visit again but possibly out of season.

After arriving on site to a very warm & friendly welcome we found the site to be quite busy and up to all the usual caravan standards. We found a a lovely pitch at the top of the site which had plenty of room.
Toilets were very clean and tidy showers were nice and warm. Anyone who enjoys cycling or water sports it is fantastic. Shop very basic so bring plenty of supplies as the nearest supermarket is in Ashbourne.
As a previous dog owner we know how inconvenient it is for your animal to want to go to the toilet in a public place but it is essential for the safety of our children that dog owners please watch your dog as we found on the beautiful woodland walk there was plenty of dog mess to be trod in. We were pitched up within 20 yards of the woodland walk within the first 2 hours my eldest son of 9 came back smelling of dog mess, I then took my 3 year old son on the walk I stepped in it and then found my son picking it up thinking it was a tree cone. Now please clean up after your dogs!!!!!!Please
As for a break/holiday in Derbyshire one of the best.

Just got back from a nice 2 night break, wish it was longer but site was fully booked for main Easter w/e. That said, the warden did suggest there may be space if some didn't turn up.
This is a lovely site, large hardstanding pitches well set out in woodland glens which protect you from the weather - it's only when you get out from the trees into the open that we realised how windy it was. Great dog walk round perimeter & to Carsington Water ( this is a steady 40 min walk from van to centre, rather than the 15-20 mins mentioned elsewhere though ! ). You def. Need strong awning pegs & metal hammer, which caught us out & ended up paying 80p per peg at reception ! but they kindly lent us a hammer as rubber type is useless.
Very clean, well serviced toilet block, just a shame it's closed 10.30am-12.00pm - peak time.
Would go again.

We've spent a couple of different weekends here.
Showers etc. Are great - usual CC standard. Pitches are hardstanding, with EHU and are reasonable size. There are lots of small cul de sacs and lots of trees on this site.
You can order newspapers from wardens.
Easy walk down to Carsington Water - we walked around it one day it's about 8 or 9 miles, mainly flat some areas can be a bit muddy, but there's a gravel path for most of the way around. Lots of horses and bikes - but much of the pedestrian path is separate to these.
Freeview works here.

Had a lovely time, staff very pleasant and helpful. We stayed with our 2 boxers from the Friday morning to Monday Pm, and although the weather could have been better, it only rained in the evenings, and there were about 30 caravans and motorhomes there for the weekend, so it wasn't busy, the site is lovely, there are about 6 or 7 pitches in little pods in amongst the pine trees, and it was lovely. The dogs loved going in and out of the trees, and there are lovely views either side of the site. I am absolutely sure that when the sun is shining, it would be fantastic, and we will definitely go back. There is only one small criticism, and that there is 130 pitches and only 1 toilet block, so I would imagine that you might have to queue for a shower or cubicle in the high season, and they close the block for cleaning 1030 to 1200 which also could pose a problem in the high season. There are great areas to explore all around, and plenty of information at reception. The site is dark at night so take a torch, as the only light is from the electricity bollards, but we loved that, peaceful, quite, rabbits running about. Pitches are quite large, but there is only about 3 to 4 foot of grass in between, so if its busy, it might be too close to each other for some people. Carsington water is great for all the family, wildlife, boating, sailing, coffe, tea, lunch, a couple of retail shops, quite reasonable, hubby got a fleece he has had his eye on for a while £10 cheaper than Go Outdoors, so he treated himself. All in all a very relaxing time, and we were the last caravan to leave on the Monday. Weather got abit windy on the Saturday night, and the pine trees although blowing quite freely at the top, gave you some shelter from the wind, which was nice.

Visited for 4 nights early october, & had a great time. Nice site, lots of pitches to choose from, but got very full the weekend. Well spaced out & large pitches, surrounded by large pines which made it feel damp at this time of year, as the sun struggled to get through. Quiet at night.
Less than 10 min walk to an impressive Carsington Water, which you can walk / cycle round, about 9 miles in distance. Nice pub meal at the Miners Arms in the village. Fantastic day out at the lovely Dovedale a 3 mile linear walk to Milldale from Thorpe, highly recommended & also visited Matlock Bath for a cable car ride at the Heights of Abraham.
All in all I can thoroughly recommend this site for visiting the South of the Peak District.

Most Recommended. After moving on from a very poor (none caravan club) site in the Ashbourne area, we contacted Blackwall Plantation to see if they could fit us in at very, very short notice. The warden that I spoke to was very helpful and we arrived on site later that day.
When arriving on site we could immediately see that the site looked good, before even going through the security barrier.
Most pitches are hard standing but all are a very good size with grass in between each pitch so there were no units too close together.
The Toilet and shower blocks were in good condition, however as they were only cleaned once a day and as you can't always guarantee the cleanliness of other campers on site, then on a couple of days a couple of the toilet cubicles were left littered with toilet paper until they were next cleaned.
We were on site with a 6 week old baby and were given access to the baby and toddler room, which is a great facility to have on any site.
The site was within walking distance of Carsington Water with a lovely walk along the Dam Wall to the Visitor Centre.
We thought the site was excellent and one of the best we have stayed at. When we return to Derbyshire again we shall definitely be booking in at Blackwall Plantation again.

We spent the weekend at Blackwall and loved it. We have been to a few caravan club sits now and I would say this is the best one up to now. The walk around Carsington water was nice. We have booked again for september, looking forward to it.

We managed to get in via a cancelled booking over Spring Bank Holiday. We were pleasantly suprised to be able to choose our pitch, and we tried out hardstanding for the first time which we also liked. While we were trying to decide where the other dog owners were and where the evening sun would fall, two couples almost rushed out with a glass of wine and garlic bread for us - they were really friendly, so we pitched in one of the upper tiers with them.
Don't bother bringing your satellite dish. I don't think there is a single pitch able to receive a signal due to the tall pine trees. These same trees however provided lots of shelter from the strong winds, but were not obscuring sunshine, so this was good.
The facilities were the best I've seen, although I don't think it is a good idea to be cleaning them between 10.30 and 12, as they arguably need another toilet block.
There is an excellent dog walk around the park with some stunning views. The nearby town of Ashbourne is 10 mins drive away for food shopping, although the camp shop had some excellent home-made food for sale. We visited nearby Edale. What a place of beauty this is.
Because we were non-members of the CC, we would have been charged an extra £25 or so, but we were kindly offered membership for only a little extra which I had been meaning to do anyway and I saved that charge. The staff really did want you to have a pleasant stay and were very friendly.
I've read the other reviews of this site and I didn't see a single piece of litter or dog mess. We were happy to be completely midge free too. I saw how other folks' kid's were absolutely loving the woods, den-building and the like. If you don't appreciate this kind of thing, don't worry as this was not near any of the pitches. If you do have kids, they will not be bored here.
All things considered, we can't really fault this site. We will be back!

We have just purchased our first caravan (first tow, first everything!) and wanted a weekend break not far away from where we live to test everything out. Even though this site displayed as fully booked on the CC website we phoned Thursday night and Friday morning and managed to get a cancellation.
We arrived 6pm on the Friday with about five vans promptly following up the long sweeping tarmac hill. The lady at reception was extremely helpful when we mentioned we were newbie’s and she took the time to explain everything including marking out the free spots which would be good for us and our two children 3 years and under.
First impression of the site was how nice it was to be surrounded by pine trees. Most of the site is hard standing, but we wanted grass - it was roasting hot and it seemed no-one else wanted grass! we got a great spot in front of the under 5 play area - not so great if you don't have kids and don’t like to hear then playing! – We could sit outside the van and watch them. We did not need levelling blocks but I saw plenty in use in other areas of the site.
There is a also a larger play area for over 5’s – which is basically just a wooden multi play frame, slide and net etc. The aforementioned muddy hill is now gated off. The site is large and the pitches are in between the beautiful pine trees - which create shade from the sun if required. It looks very dog friendly with a dedicated dog walk with many people walking past to say morning, afternoon or evening to. The showers were great; the child room/changing/bath with key entry is excellent. We found two service points each including a chemical waste.
Staff were very helpful, we were allowed to stay after 12 on the Sunday once they knew they had enough spaces for the 24 arrivals. It was disappointing that not many people leaving at 12 volunteered this information - it was requested on the reception sign and would have helped us plan.
No litter, did not see any dog mess. I cannot compare this to other CC sites as we haven’t been to any yet, but compared to non CC sites we have stayed on I would say this site is 100% better. It was quiet at night and early morning and I liked the darkness of the site. We felt safe with the key barrier entry and banked site boundaries. For a fully rounded review I would say that if you don’t like children, dogs or trees shielding the view of the countryside then you might not like it here.
As for the area, well I am biased as I live in Amber Valley, Derbyshire! It is obviously fantastic! Carsington Reservoir is next door and viewable from the site boundary and some pitches. The visitor center and sailing club is a 30 min slow walk with pushchair along the damn wall (15 min brisk pace). It is a great place for kids with a large play park and water sports. You can hire bikes if you don’t bring your own and can cycle all the way around the reservoir with amazing countryside views. Obviously there is plenty to see and do in Derbyshire and you are centrally placed for Matlock Bath, Chatsworth House, Kedleston Hall and Dovedale etc.
