We visited this site for a long weekend when the site was fairly full. Most pitches are hardstanding and the few grass pitches were out of use due to the weather. There was still some mud around but not enough to be a problem.
The site is set out in mainly circular bays off central a road which is mostly only wide enough for one unit at a time. This layout meant you could take your time to look at various pitches before choosing without blocking the main road which was good as we did have some difficulty finding a pitch for our 28ft long unit. We eventually found one where we could overhang the grass at the back making the pitch long enough.
Wardens very friendly and helpful, you choose your own pitch and you can go onto the pitch forwards or backwards but not side ways.
Very easily accessible motorhome dump station – nicely positioned as you weren’t blocking anyone else so didn’t have to rush.
Toilets and showers are adequate but a little tired and old - not quite up to the usual CC standard.
You can hear the children playing on the play area but it is not an issue at all. Very occasional road noise but generally a very peaceful site.
Chip van on a Friday – portions not giant but more than adequate and very tasty!
Fabulous walks around the site –direct route to Carsington Water – and a lovely dog walk with ample poo bins – a great shame people didn’t always use them.
The woodland walk around the other side of the site was also lovely – again you had to watch where you were walking as selfish people had left mess. Some loose dogs on site but none that caused a problem.
Shop at Sainsburys or Waitrose in Ashbourne (7 miles) – both are fairly small.
All in all a nice base for visiting this area.

Spent 4 nights here at the end of July, a nice site set within a forest. We had read reviews an told to avoid a pitch around the toilet block area as it is very busy. Great location for walking the dogs and site has a good dog walking section.
If going back I would probably head to the far end of the site as we prefer it a bit quieter. Whilst we were there someone kept playing a guitar early hours. Okay to start with but then wore a bit thin when started up again at 7am!
If you go you need to head into Kirk Ireton and experienced the Barley Mow inn, honestly the strangest pub I have ever been in, don't go dressed up is all I will say and don't expect friendly welcome by the land ladies. Locals are lovely though. Another word of warning do not use your sat nav to find this site, it took us up a road unsuitable for caravans. Very scary!
There are not many pubs within walking distance, however the Knockdowner down the road is very nice and also one in Kniveton. Great welcomes and good beer. Would definitely go back as great for walking.

A good site that reflects the usual Caravan Club standard, although the toilet block showers looked a little 'tired'. Lovely location for visiting this part of Derbyshire.
The site is within easy reach of Ashbourne and Belper. Sainsbury supermarket at Ashbourne and Morrisons at Belper. Matlock Bath is within a reasonable distance too - like a seaside town without the sea. Enjoyed visiting Cromford - liked the tea shop by the side of the canal - scones and clotted cream. Mmmm at a reasonable price.
The site itself is set within pine trees and is fairly shaded in places. The shady nature of the site might not appeal to everyone and could make an awning a little more difficult to dry out if weather becomes wet. Pine needles and cones were not uncommon on the caravan and awning roof. The squirrels got into the awning one night and helped themselves to our rubbish bin.
An area ideal for walking. Carsington reservoir is close by and is walkable from the site for those more energetic than I. Nice visitors centre and good for the kids. I understand it was busy over the Bank Holiday though.
Plenty of pubs in the area. We had a meal at the Knockerdown Inn which was very enjoyable, but all food had to be paid up front and 'no tabs'. 3% surcharge for using a credit card and 50p to use a debit card. Don't let this put you off though, it was a really good meal. Just take cash.

Stayed here for 2 nights in August, some of the roads on the way in can be quite steep when tugging the van so make sure you have enough under the bonnet to pull you, especially if you are using the A52 From stoke to Ashbourn, can be a nasty route,
Site in decent condition & shower blocks are fine, brilliant dog walk on site right around the camp. Think the place could do with an uplift as it falls behind a lot of the caravan clubs standards these days
Pitches are grass & hard standing but all shapes and sizes, some at the top of the park are slopping so need to raise side of the van slightly.
Tv reception is poor & if you are like me & carry an internet dongle. I could not even get a signal using a 15 foot usb extension attached to the top of a pole.
Cattle grid on entrance feels like you are falling off cliffs so go slowly, massive lake just outside with visitor centre, must place to visit, heights of Abraham in Matlock a must for the cable car ride 800 foot to top of the mountain, guided walks down the caves as well. Was a nice visit & would return although my car wouldn't agree.

The site is usual CC standards and the pitches are well arranged and spacious.
The dog walk is excellent going all the way around the site.
The children’s play areas are good and have something for all ages.
Our 19 month old son loved the small play area while his sisters of 3 and 5 loved both areas, although the bigger play area is not that ideal for our 3 year old.
TV signal was good from our house type aerial which received several free view channels; we didn’t try the van aerial.
Carsington Reservoir is great. There is an excellent play area, again suiting all ages, a licensed restaurant, water sports, nature reserve/ bird hides, pic-nic areas, plenty of running around space and all within walking distance of the site.
The 8 mile path around the reservoir is quite hilly for about a third of the way and can be a challenge for the younger cyclist. We managed to get our bikes around it with our cycle trailer, but some hills were too steep for me (Dad) and we had to walk up them. Admittedly, I had a child seat on the back of my bike as well as the trailer – the combined weight of a 5, 3 and 1 year old was too much!
A word of warning, the road out of the site to the reservoir is a big down hill on to a fast road – watch your children, especially if they are not that good with their bike brakes. There is a fenced off foot path that follows the road, but it’s not that wide and thus not suitable for bikes if you meet someone going in the opposite direction! There is a slightly sloping grass verge you can use so you can stay off the main road if you wish.
There is plenty of parking at the visitor centre, but you have to pay. We spotted a few motorhomes in the car park, but they appeared to be less than 20ft in length. We never noticed any dedicated motorhome parking, but then again we never looked! There are coach areas and if it wasn’t busy, which it wasn’t when we visited, you would be fine to park, although check for any restriction signs.
The fish and chip van visits on a Friday (I think it was Friday). I would probably give it a miss as we didn’t feel it was good value. Fish not that big, chips of the small size you’d expect for a van, curry like water and average gravy; I don’t think they sold anything else.
Would we visit the site again – yes, but when the children are competent on their own bikes!

Fantastic site 40 mins from my home but took me the last 2 years as a caravanner to find it. Every time you step outside the warden is out doing his stuff and always has time for a chat. Site is extremely well maintained and the facilities are up to a good standard. Bit of a problem with water pressure for the showers but if that's all I've got to worry about in life....
Plenty of pubs within a few miles of the site for food but never got as far as them. Only downside is there is no direct access to Carsington from the site and you have to got out of the site, to the road and back in (10mins walk !) Will be putting it on my hitlist for when the CC open up the bookings for next year !

Beautiful site set amongst pine trees- the further into the site you go the less busy it is - so if you don't want to watch kids playing go for pitches above number 80 - although these are then further from toilet block.
Only downside to this typical caravan club site is the toilet block --- to be polite its a bit ' tired' - although kept spotless by the wardens it is small - 6 showers in the ladies for over 100 pitches not good - and now looks very dated. Nearly all the comments in the on site comment book said the same, but having said that, lovely site, beautiful walks round carsington water and easy to get to.

This is a splendid site, Good location for walks long or short and a few nice villages nearby for local pubs etc. The dog walk is one of the best going all the way round the site and some lovely views over Carsington Water on north western side of the site. Spent a good couple of hours trying to get a satellite signal and found that the normal TV signal through a booster and with the Spaceship top ariel was good enough.
As you would expect from a caravan Club site Facilities were very good however one toilet block in the middle meant if you were at the top or bottom of the site then it was a reasonable walk.
Although no kids with us the play areas were positively used and looked good plenty of grubby faces, knees and hands from playing on play areas in the woods. Gets very busy at weekends and school holidays. One to return to certainly

Just spent 3 days here over the weekend. All in all a very nice site. Cannot fault the location, very pretty with a great walk to and around Carsington Waters with plenty to do there. We pitched near the children's play area because we had friends joining us later and it was perfect. We claimed a piece if grass opposite our pitch where we had a BBQ and was a welcome shield from the stunningly hot weekend we had. The kids area did get a bit noisy but we didnt mind as they did go in at a reasonable time
Dog walk was superb all way round the camp with a bench at the top with amazing views over Carsington waters ideal to read your paper in peace with a stunning view.
Toilets and showers were average I would say compared to other cc sites although definitely not lacking in the cleanliness department but I thought a little cramped and not much water pressure no having to wait though and does its job.
Wardens as always very helpful and polite and always working
I think the only thing missing is a booster tv system as you do take pot luck to which pitch your on as to whether you get a signal or not and I don't want to have to take a big ariel on a pole. I personally think they look hideous.
I would definitely return back again and again as overall it was a fantastic break

We only live a 10 minute drive from this site and I so pleased that we do as it is ideal for a Friday afternoon bolt hole to chill.
Friendly wardens, easy access, would sometimes be helpful if they could give you a clue which 'bays' were full as not easy having to drive in, crawl round looking for deep enough pitch before crawling back out to try another 'bay' - just a thought.
All facilities are clean and well, maintained with fairly central toilet block.
Good dog walk which goes round the whole perimeter of the site with stunning views across the reservoir. The only night time disturbance was from hooting owls.
Local pubs include the Knockerdown just past the Visitors centre and the Miners Arms in Carsington Village. A further drive takes you to the Ketch at Kniveton, all do food. For those wanting a 'local' with real ale try the Barley Mow in Kirk Ireton village. Hognaston and Brassington villages are also worth a drive. If you want a chippy there are good ones in Belper, Wirksworth and Ashbourne.
Carsington reservoir has something for everyone - the 8.5 mile walk / cycle round it is worth the effort. I remember this valley before it was flooded and it is still as beautiful as it was but now with the addition of all the water sports etc. The High Peak cycle trail can also be accessed at nearby Cromford / Middleton top.
