We have just returned from a 5 day stay at this campsite. We are members of the caravan club and regularly go to their sites but this was our first time here. I have to be honest and say we felt it was not up to many of the other clubs standards. There was litter strewn around the site (but to be fair it was packed, the wardens were friendly enough (not that attentive when you go into reception but it may have been because they were so busy) and the layout was good (the children loved it). We did feel that the facilities were insufficient for the number of pitches. We found 3 washing sinks for over 100 pitches and we regularly queued to wash up. The same applied to the showers but they were nice and hot when you did get in and if you time it early there are no queues. The shop held very few items and closed at 6pm. The Children's play area was closed and the infant area was open. Definitely agree with the other reviewers ideal for under 3s but even my 3 year old got bored with it. If you like your sun, choose your pitch carefully as many tend to get complete shade. Saying all that the site is very convenient and great for Carsington Reservoir (definitely recommend bringing your bikes). The children loved the adventure feel of the site. We would go again but would like to go when it is less busy.

Just returned from a 5 night break on this site. After reading the reviews below I almost switched sites having never visited Blackwall Plantation before, however we were meeting up with another family so it was to difficult to change bookings. On arrival the site was clean and tidy, the main road is tarmac with chippings on the other roads so the kids scooters are pretty useless. If you chose your pitch well you can get a sky signal but the pitches that this will work on is limited to only a handful. We found the toilets clean and tidy as you would expect from all club sites. The main play area is closed during 2007 as stated on the CC website and the smaller recently improved play area for younger children is very good for a toddler to 5 year old. The signage around the hill tells children not to use bikes on the hill and although we did not witness bikes on the hill I believe the wardens will try their best to enforce this. However it should be up to the parents to enforce this! The dog owners on the site all appeared to be responsible and no lose dogs were seen.
We would defiantly visit this site again.

Just got back from this site, spent 3 nights over the Bank Holiday. We arrived on Friday night and there were quite a few pitches available, our pitch was hard standing and flat. We couldn't get sky tv, and our caravan aerial is quite poor, there is no TV booster system as on some other CC sites, so we also couldn't use the TV cable as we normally do. Never mind, there wasn't much time for TV anyway. The dog walk through the woods is fine, but the site is very dark at night. It's on different levels. We were close to the toilet block, which is good for the kids, as there is only one block I'm glad we weren't too far away. The playground for older kids will be closed for all of 2007 - not sure why but our kids were disappointed. Older kids were still playing on the hill - which is now a dry mud bank. We were glad we didn't pitch at the bottom of this hill, as we kept expecting the bigger boys (who were running and cycling down the hill) to go straight into the vans. The small playground is for very young childrem, our 6 year wasn't interested at all. Although we have no specific gripes with the site, it wasn't up to the usual CC standards, and there were quite a few incidents of loose dogs, dog poo and loud music. I suppose that's more the fault of the people visiting than the wardens. We tried to walk down to Carsington water but had to turn back due to the unbelievable amount of large black midges, they were in swarms visible from the road! My daughter was hysterical and we went back to the caravan, thankfully we didn't see any insects there at all. Later we drove down to the Carsington Water car park, and the playground there is great, we spent a lovely afternoon there. The site is 6 miles from Ashbourne, and about 15 minutes drive from Dovedale. It's a nice part of the world. The site is fine, nothing special - it lacks the wow factor of Chatsworth Park, but at least we managed to get in for Bank Holiday weekend at short notice, that's impossible to do at Chatsworth or Clumber.

Spent 4 nights here. Found the site very peaceful once the mass exodus on Sunday lunchtime had taken place. We arrived just before appointed time and were not well received by the wardens even though there were plenty of pitches free. Toilet block very clean although some showers and wcs locked and therefore out of use (presumably the wardens do this when the site is quite empty to cut down on the cleaning) We had our faithful pooch with us and she enjoyed the good dog walk facility. When walking around the site after dusk you may need a torch as there is no lighting other than the bollards which are generally hidden behind the vans. Despite weather there is lots to do in the area and a very welcoming pub/restaurant not far away (The knockerdown) . The reservoir has lots to offer - don't forget to visit the stones on the island.

Not a good start, the warden would not allow my daughter on to the pitch with her car to unload. Bearing in mind the granddaughter was asleep in the car.S he had to park by the toilet block till I had unloaded and moved my car to the car park.
The site itself was to the usual CC standard, wonderful surroundings. Heavy rain on the Saturday flooded the awning. Avoid pitches (43,44,45,46,) near the hill behind the toilet block. Two reasons - they flood and no one takes any notice about not climbing or riding bikes on the steep slopes. We will be going back but choosing our pitch with more care.

Just returned from a long weekend here and had a lovely time. We had only one niggle and that was when we arrived at 2.30 on a Saturday, unfortunately the choice of pitches was limited. We found that a lot of the remaining pitches were quite small or awkward to manouvre into, but we luckily found one grass pitch that was ok (even though it was under a shedding pine tree) and we used that. On the Sunday and subsequent days there were loads of pitches, so if you're going on a Saturday get there for 12.00!
Anyway back to the site, it's in gradual tiers, staff were very friendly and helpful, toilet facilities good even though my OH always complains that they clean the toilets at the time most people want to go.
As said before the definate plus is the cycling around Carsington reservoir, which was great. We had a scary day out to The Heights Of Abraham in Matlock Bath (a real thrill on the cable car) caves to explore here too and adventure playgrounds for kids. Dovedale and Ilam were lovely too and well worth a visit.
We will definitely go back here!

July 2005 Just returned from this lovely site, a little bit out of the way, but for a large site very peacefully. Surrounded by tall trees (you feel as though you are in the middle of a forest). No sky tv reception because of tall trees. Kids absolutely loved it here, like a big adventure, two play parks one for the smaller ones and one for older ones. Pitches are large although much of the roads are gravel and can be a bit noisy. If you have bikes bring them and ride to the visitor centre at Carsington Water, has a great play park for the kids and a big green for picnics, ball games, etc., but takes around 45 minutes to walk to from site, we would definitely bring our bikes next time. Would definitely go again although unfortunately it will probably be next year now.

August 2004 Great site - clean tidy. Good location - Carsington Water has great facilities. Very friendly and helpful staff
A bit tricky to find though so read directions carefully. Nice dog walk around the site. Spacious pitches with plenty of room to spread out and pitch awning etc

July 2003 We recently visited this site for a long weekend; Even though this is quite a large site, the way it is set out among the plantation of pine trees, makes it quite relaxing and peaceful. The site has just one centrally positioned toilet / shower block, which seemed adequate, and kept to a high standard of cleanliness.
Most pitches are hard standing, and there are two play areas on site for children. The staff were polite & helpful on our arrival. There is a small ‘shop’ located in the reception area with very limited stock. Carsington Water Visitors Centre is nearby, which offers various shops and a restaurant, and is ideal for cyclists and walkers alike.
