This is a very nice site very cheap close to the canal and visitor centre not overcrowded but te only drawback is the fact that it only has 1 ladies shower, 1 mens shower which is signed as disabled shower
There is only 1 gents toilet and 1 ladies which when there is a function on in the visitor centre are used by all

Beautiful large expanse of camping field select your own pitch. Cafe available during business hours.
Due to it being run by the council you are restricted by council hours! So if you turn up on spec say after 1630 or at the weekend then you will be out of luck. It is essential to pre-book outside of business hours.
Considering the size of the camping field and the associated canal visitor centre attraction the toilet facilities are inadequate to say the least. If the local council gave the green light to build a new toilet block this site would be a must for everyone

We were a little dubious about this site after seeing some of the reviews on here but due to the cost not being too much (£8. 00 for the tent, £3. 50 for each adult and £2. 00 for the kids) so even if we weren’t fussed then it wouldn’t be so much of a problem.
We stayed in July and there was loads to do for the kids, a pirate trail that was £2. 00 per child, colouring competition 50p and pond dipping £3. 00 per child (tbh you could just pay for one and the others all join in anyway) so the on site activities were great. We didn’t spend too much time on site as the campsite is halfway on the canal so we took our bikes off for the day exploring. The site doesn’t have EHU but that was brilliant as we made the kids leave their ipods, DS’s etc at home and they spend the time playing football or rounders.
We had BBQ’s most nights and as long as they are raised from the floor then that is fine. The staff are great, come round everyday to check your permits so they know no one has sneaked on and are really informative about the canal. Portaloos were hired for the field during our stay because it got busy and just to help as there are only 3 toilets in the shower block but there are more in the visitors centre which is open in the daytimes.
We loved it here and extended our stay for a week. It was fantastic weather and as it is under the flight path of the airport we will be coming back next year during the Airshow as you see most of the air displays from the field!

We returned after 4 years to see it almost exactly the same. Peace and quiet in a beautiful setting. It does it for me to sit in a chair and hear in the distance the m3, then watch a barge go by, then hear a train, and look up at planes taking off whilst seemingly in the middle of nowhere, so beautiful ....... until.
The dogs ! It even says dogs only on leads but of course they know everyones gone by 4. 15pm so lets use it as a dog run. If you are going to sit inside your motorhome then great otherwise avoid it, and only the people running it have ruined it! What a shame, the place is beautiful. Until after 4. 15pm.

Stopped at this site as we were visiting relatives and will use it again. It is a basic site but has everything we needed and lots of interesting things around the canal to entertain the kids!
The site has got plans for a new toilet block which the council has put on hold for the moment.
My only real bug bear with this site is that for a basic site with no hook up it worked out quite expensive as they charged £6 for the unit per night then £4 each adult and classed my 14 year old as an adult and £3. 50 per child per night so for our family or 6 it was not so cheap!

Be very very wary about visiting here. The manager was very unhelpful and inflexible. There is only one WC for men (broken lid) and women to 47 pitches, the toilet block is closed for an hour each morning for cleaning, just as you need the loo!
The nappy bin is only changed once a day, in the morning, and smells (toilet block shared with public during the day), three showers for both men and women - you queue for a while. In addition the flight path to Farnborough airport goes straight over the site.
At night there is a generator constantly on for the yurt tent and the humming of the M3 is relentless, both too noisy. In all I would swerve - the price is way to high. The canal activities are very expensive too and quite frankly not worth it.
We also had a piling contractor (very noisy) on site all day with no prior warning at time of booking!

I stayed here mid week to take advantage of the canal, as I quite fancied exploring the canal in my kayak.
Fantastic basic site, with friendly staff, plenty of space, and with the benefit of the Basingstoke canal on your door step.
As mentioned before your given a key for the barrier, and a code for the toilets/showers.
There is what appears to be a couple of toilets for women with a shower, and a couple for men with a family shower room. Whilst basic the facilities were clean, and warm, with plenty of hot water. Although slightly annoying is that the showers are a push button which gives you about 20 seconds of water so your for ever pressing the button.
I paid a mere £9 for the night which is a bargain these days, although you are asked to pay a £30 deposit for the keys, and any damage that you may cause to the site.
The site does slope slightly so your be wise to pick a flat spot or use ramps.
You can hear the trains, as they are only the other side of the canal, but there certainly not loud enough to prevent you from enjoying yourself.
I'll certainly be using the site again, as its convenient for me with the kayak.

As others have said, this site is cheap and cheerful. We camped at the far end, in a corner. There were only 13 tents on the entire field, midweek in mid-July, so plenty of space for everyone. You do get some noise from low planes, MOD land, nearby roads, and trains, but overall it was very quiet.
The site could improve, by adding a dedicated shower block for campers as the family shower and one women's shower is a bit inadequate. The women's shower is tiny and mouldy, but the family shower room is fine.
The kids were delighted to see lots of wildlife here, including frogs, a fox, and plenty of bunnies. The fenced-in field next to the canal has a warning sign as this is a nesting ground for adders - added a bit of adventure!
There was a large group of young men, not staying the night, who BBQ-ed by the carpark/canal who were very rude to my young daughter as we passed. Luckily they left by 20:00 and didn't return the next night. There are no staff after 4:45 to notice problems like that.
This campsite could improve in a few areas but as others have said, then it wouldn't be so cheap and quiet!

This campsite is a hidden gem! Brilliant if you just love the simplicity of a big field and not much else!
That said it is next to a fabulous visitors centre which has lots of activities for children to do including pond dipping.
The canal is very peaceful with boats and pedalos (avoid at all costs) available for hire. It's 20 mins from home so we will definitely be coming back.
The planned new toilet block will be a huge benefit to the site. A small camp shop just for the few things that you always forget would also be a great addition.

We have just returned from spending the bank holiday on this site. We booked here, because we planned on visiting Thorpe park and chessington.
We were just using this as a base for travelling to the sites. It is very easy to locate, and when we arrived on site, there was a lot of cars using the car park. The campsite itself was fairly busy, with lots of pitching activity happening, but there was still plenty of spaces left, and we pitched in one corner not too far from the cafe.
The man in reception was very helpful, but I was taken aback when he requested a £30 deposit for the gate key. This wasn't mentioned at the time of booking, but I understand they have had a few instances in the past few months where people had abused the easy going nature of the site.
The site is basic - with only 2 showers for the men, which flooded into the utility area. There are plans for a better washroom facility, and this is one area that needs improving.
So book this site before it becomes too popular, as it was relaxing being by the river - even the occasional manoeuvres from the nearby mod land didn't spoil the atmosphere.
We will return to this site later in the year
