The road into the site is tight and steep, single track so a bit hairy if you meet someone coming the other way as reversing a motorhome down a steep winding bank isn't fun.
The check in was nice, welcoming and efficient until the point where we were told to pitch our unit with the back drivers side corner to the pitch marker - no exceptions. Well, this may suit caravanners with a front end lounge but for those with rear view lounges or like us, side opening doors it left us stuck viewing a fence, some shrubbery a the static vans on the neighbouring site. Some flexibility would have been appreciated as most CC sites allow you to pitch either way as long as it isn't side on.
The shower block was a bit dated but clean but my big problem with it was that the door to the toilet block was continually fastened open wide (it was a bit whiffy) and as the shower cubicles are the closest ones to the door this led to a rather cold and miserable shower, which was a shame as they were powerful and the water was nice and hot, but the shower curtain kept blowing onto me as I showered as there was a breeze in the shower block - I rushed back to my van to get warm (closing the toilet block door on the way, only to find it locked open again on my next visit. Not acceptable for the last weekend in October in Yorkshire!
Although there was nothing terribly wrong with this site, I doubt we will return as it didn't suit us personally but I am sure others would like it.

Had a pleasant week - first time at this site. Initially had to pitch-up in a shady spot next to the railway as it was bank holiday weekend, but several pitches became vacant the following day so we moved to a sunny spot. As the site is in a quarry, the sunny pitches are few and far between.
As mentioned in other reviews, the toilet block is a little dated - but everything in working order and I think the showers are the warmest, most powerful seen on a caravan site for some time.
We did the usual visits - Aysgarth Falls, Forbidden corner and Thorp Perrow (this was the Tue following bank hol monday and it was really quiet. Lovely walks through the trees and only our family and one other watched the pirds of prey show. This meant our 2 kids each held onto a falcon!)
Only drawback was - I got the feeling the staff couldn't allow the children to have a bit of freedom. They complained about them riding their bikes or exploring between the trees and one evening at 5.30 they were told 'it's too late to be playing around here, you should go back to your caravan now'!)
Wouldn't go again with kids.
Lovely walking country - short on bridleways for mountain-biking in the near vicinity.

We agree with most of the positive comments about this very quiet site in a great part of the country. There are loads of walks in the area and one circular 5 mile one passes the site.
The usual CC standards as expected and definitely hot showers in clean facilities. My only comments, which are general CC problems: the shop tends to be a bit pricey and very limited, eg, milk but no bread. The laundry is very costly with a very inefficient dryer.
Worth a visit if you like to get out on the hills.

This site is a CC affilliated site but run the same way as most CC sites. It's set down in a quarry and is in small(ish) sections.
On arrival you have to drive around the main reception/toilet block to avoid blocking up the one way in/out road. Nice wardens and quick, easy check in.
As with all other CC sites you get to choose your own pitch. Most, if not all of them, are hardstanding.
Facilities looked a little dated but the shower was the hottest and biggest cubicle of our 17 days trip! Never had to queue and kept spotlessly clean.
Under-cover washing up area and information room housed in a separate shed. You can order daily newspapers from reception and collect each morning.
The site is over run with wildlife and I spent many an hour in the afternoon watching the birds using our neighbours bird feeders - I even saw a coot jump up onto one of the shelves! Lots of ducklings around, although the numbers seemed to get smaller day by day. Bunnies everywhere too.
The walk to Leyburn from the site is a good 25/30 minutes (so not great for our old dog with arthritis!). Didn't warm to Leyburn as much as Hawes. For some reason it didn't feel as friendly (maybe that was just us?).
The Pheasant Inn, situated on the main road into the site was a step back in time. No till, no refrigeration but the best cider of the Northern part of our trip (Thatchers Gold!). Doggie friendly but no food - unless you count pickled eggs and nuts
Not sure that we would re-visit this site because of the proximity but it really did have a lovely friendly feel to it - just perhaps not right for us?

Had a long weekend here, having read reviews, we were looking forward to it. Greeted by wardens and given choice of pitch, thought the lady was a bit abrupt! Very quiet and peaceful lots of wildlife, a nice site. Facilities seemed tired, but clean.
A visit to Hawes and the cheese factory is worth a look, not that impressed with the museum but the shop has lots of samples to try before you buy.
Leyburn has many good pubs, some dog friendly.
You can walk into Leyburn from the site.
A nice break, would return to site.

We were a bit apprehensive about this site as we had not visited a managed site before. When we arrived the reception was closed so we drove round to find a pitch - some quite small but found one on the upper level which was ok.
Toilet block not top standard as some of the caravan club sites, but ok,if people remember to mop out afterwards! Nice and quiet (apart from the odd steam train) and we were visited by the ducks every day! Nice relaxing site, not one for young children though, and close to town for supply runs. Would probably visit again

Stayed here for a week, very nice quiet site, the pitches are set out around the old quarry with plenty of shade if you don't want sunshine all the time HA HA, we are in ENGLAND after all. Plenty of wild life about, and good walks. Toilet block was always clean and tidy, as was the rest of the site. Friendly staff on site. There is a good selection of shops in Leyburn, supermarket, walking shops etc. It takes about fifteen mins to walk into Leyburn. This is a good base to explore north Yorkshire and also County Durham.

First time we've been to the site and after reading previous comments, I was a little worried about the narrow entrance. When I arrived however, there really wasn't much of a problem; the entrance road isn't 'that' narrow, its very short and there is only one bend where you aren't sure what is coming the other way. Even there the mirrors help. So don't panic people!
Onto the site itself - loved it. Absolutely perfect. For a start its so interesting - built in a quarry where every pitch is different and many are hidden away in little nooks are crannies. Most are surrounded by trees, plants etc and wildlife abounds. At night we even heard a tawny owl hooting away. Take a torch as its very dark at night, but that only adds to the fun.
The wardens are very friendly and helpful, there is a newspaper service, information kiosk, clean (and warm!) toilet facilities and for anything else, Leyburn is a fifteen minute stroll away.
For those who like trains, the Wensleydale heritage railway runs past the bottom of the site and the station is about 10 mins walk away. Also check out the views of the disused quarry just off the track running behind the site - amazing; with its very own lagoon in the bottom. Don't try and enter it through, just peek over the wall - anything more adventurous and you will end up a very dead little camper - the drop is near vertical!
Finally - there are walks from the site straight out onto the dales.
So all in all, a most interesting, well situated and pleasant site.

Visited for a two night break in early April 2010.
Travelled from the A19 through Northalerton and Bedale roads twisty but quite wide and easy to tow on.
Site signposted from the main road, turn right at the Pheasant Inn, access to the site is very narrow and twisty with some quite steep hills so make sure you stick to the access times. Believe me you wouldn't want to meet another van coming the opposite way took it easy and didn't have a problem.
Arrived around 1pm and found reception to be very helpful and friendly. We were advised which pitches were available and requested to come back and inform them which pitch we had chosen.
Not your usual CC regimented layout.
Set in the site of an old quarry with pitches dotted around in clusters between patches of trees and hills giving it a secluded feel.
Pitches flat, hard and spacious allowing car, van and awning to be parallel to each other.
Site was full by tea time but still felt quite private.
Site is dog friendly although there is no specific dog walk on site.
No play area for children, but there are plenty of open spaces for them to do their stuff in.
Shower block was spotless and warm with plenty of hot water and un-metered showers
Plenty of water and waste points scattered around the site.
Fifteen minute stroll into Leyburn for all your shopping needs.
Village Pub the Pheasant quite quaint and oldy worldy, no food served though.
Ideal location for exploring the Dales, Masham etc. And a visit to the horse racing village of Middleham is a must.
All in all loved the place and its on our list of must visit again.

Our 3rd visit and one of our favourite sites.
If you like wildlife you will love it too. Tawney Owls hoot the night away - go armed with a good torch and you will see them close and clear.
As for the site, facilities are spotless (although showers are prone to flooding the block a bit), pitch size is generally ok but some can be a bit hard to get into and can feel a bit small.
No play area for kids but ours keep themselves busy exploring, playing hide and seek in the trees and feeding ducks, oh and they couldn't wait for dark to go owl spotting.
We will return in 2010
