WE had a 4 night stop over at 'Old Hartley' and enjoyed every minute, weather was very warm and sunny until the last night.
As mentioned in previous reviews you will need levelling blocks, the very top of the site along the wall is nearly level as with the bottom of the site near the coastal footpath.
Caravan and motorhome awning are not allowed from May this year.
Excellent sea and coastal views from most pitches, good dog walks along the sea front.
The Gents W/C and shower room looks a bit shabby with lots of tiles removed from a wall near the entrance, otherwise spotless.
The motorhome service area is located on the way out on a hill and blocks the way out for other campers.
Two well known superstores in Whitley bay, with local shops and pub nearby.

This was our first visit to the site and we can't wait to return. It's only a small site on a slope with fantastic views out to St Mary's Lighthouse. We had a level pitch right at the top of the site looking over all the other pitches. Make sure you have your levellers with you as definitely needed - some pitches more than others. The wardens were very friendly and helpful. The facilities were of a high standard as expected. The only problem to some would be the fact that the chemical disposal point was at the top of the slope.
The site is ideal for those with dogs as there were walks in both directions along the cliff top and over to St Mary's Lighthouse. When the tide is out there are beaches / bays where the dogs can run. Whitley Bay is about a 40 - 50 minute walk away. There is a lovely cafe called Relish just off the sea front that allowed us in with 3 dogs and a wheelchair!
There is no children's play area but you are only minutes from the beaches for them to have fun.
Just 2 minutes from the site entrance is a pub which is dog friendly and serves food. Very reasonably priced but you get what you pay for!
You are only an hour away from Seahouses and Bamburgh and a little further to Holy Island but also close enough for Newcastle and other attractions.
Be prepared for high winds. In 3 days we had sunshine, strong winds and driving rain! No awnings are allowed on site - making the site look more spacious and giving all pitches fantastic views.
This is certainly a site that we would be happy to visit again and in fact we are looking at booking up again next month.

Stunning views to st. Marys lighthouse from most of the pitches. The site is on a slope so make sure you have extra 'chocks' to level the caravan. There are restrictions at certain times of the year when awnings are not allowed. As with most caravan club sites well maintained grounds and clean toilet/shower facilities. Most of the pitches are hard standing but some at the top of the site are grassed. Fantastic coastal walks from the site and easy access to the beach. Whitley bay only 5mins by car. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay

We were due to attend a concert at The Sage in Gateshead and the Old Hartley site was superbly located for access to the Newcastle/Gateshead central area.
As others have said, the Old Hartley site is on a steep slope, so all the pitches are terraced and most have good views out to sea and of the St. Mary’s Island lighthouse. Levelling blocks are required on nearly all pitches. The site is also conveniently placed for the Delaval Arms which is located at the site entrance. We therefore HAD to call in for reviving refreshments after a long drive from East Anglia enroute to the Scottish Highlands, Orkney & Shetland. The site facilities are to the usual club standard
The wardens were very helpful and gave us good advice as to how to get into Gateshead for the evening concert and that was to use the bus rather than the Metro. So we caught the frequent bus service that stops just outside the site entrance. It takes just under an hour to reach the Haymarket bus station that is part of the Eldon Square shopping mall.
One recommendation of where to eat in Newcastle is The Redhouse which was in the shadow of the Tyne Bridge! What was even better than a good selection of beers was the “pie, mash & liquor” menu! Wait till 4. 00 pm when the “2 pies for a tenner” offer start! Superb freshly made pies with different mashes, a selection of peas & gravy – all served on an enamel plate that reminded us of our camping days! The Piano & Pitcher on the Quayside that overlooked the Baltic Centre, the Sage & the Gateshead/Tyne Bridge is also a great place to kill time before the concert start time.
We were only at the site for 2 nights and we had contrasting weather – scorching sun one day, gales & rain the next! Still, can’t blame the site for that. It was then the 9 hour – 330 mile trek to the Altnaharra/Grummore site in the Scottish Highlands.

This is a fairly small site set right on the cliff edge overlooking St Mary's Island and its lighthouse, so the view is great. What's not so great is the fact that it's totally exposed to the elements! According to the warden it's always windy there, the only thing that varies is the wind direction, and sure enough we were absolutely battered by an Arctic gale the entire length of our week-long stay. Our lightweight porch awning nearly self-destructed one night, such was the force of the wind, and we were lucky the van wasn't damaged. After a few days the wardens did put up a notice warning of the strong winds but it came a bit too late for us.
Other than that, this is a great little site handy for Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, Newcastle and Northumberland. The shower block is immaculately clean as all CC sites seem to be, only 3 showers each side but at this time of year it was sufficient.
Unlike other CC sites we have visited, you have to drive over the grass to reach your pitch and this does make a bit of a mess when the ground is soggy. Also the site slopes a fair bit and all the amenities are at the top of the slope, so be prepared for a struggle with the fresh and waste water containers.
The Delaval Arms pub is right outside the site entrance and does decent cheap food. The site is very handy for buses to Newcastle as the bus stop is only about 100 yards away.
The warden has a tractor which gets pressed into service quite frequently to pull vans off their pitches and onto the site roadway. Without that, we'd have still been stuck there.
This site does exactly what what it says on the tin, it's a really good base for exploring the area and we would definitely visit again but perhaps select our pitch a bit more carefully next time.

This is a Caravan Club Site, and as to be expected, the shower blocks are immaculate, and even better the showers and taps are either on or off, and you don't have to repeatedly press a button to keep water coming. I never had to wait for any of the facilities to become vacant, and the CCEP is indoors.
The information hut is well stocked, and there is a terrific caravan and accessory outlet a couple of miles away (details in the information shed).
We shopped at Sainsbury's in Whitley bay, and it is the cleanest and spacious I have been in, the handy ready meals are first class. We have dogs, and they like a good walk.
There are beaches in Whitley Bay, and there are also beaches close to the site, one north, one south where dogs can have a good run around and a dip in the sea if they like.
Views from the site are stunning, as it is on a cliff overlooking the sea, and St Mary's lighthouse. We did a beach walk to Blythe and back (10 mile) which was lovely.
We stumbled across The Waterford Arms in Seaton Sluice, and visited a couple of times. The food is excellent and well priced, with a good choice for both meat eaters and vegetarians; the ale is good, and it's dog friendly too.
Just across the road from the pub/hotel is a nature walk along a lovely river. We recommend combining either the beach walk, or the Nature reserve with a pint and something to eat.
Even closer to the site (about 100 yards) is the Delaval Arms, which is also dog friendly. The food is reasonable and cheap. It's not up to the standard of the Waterford, but I had a steak with full trimmings for £6. 99, which is the best value steak meal I have ever eaten.
As mentioned in other reviews, the site is on a steep gradient in terms of levelling a van front to back. Some pitches are so steep, the jockey wheels are perilously resting on a pile of bricks, or worst still, on some pitches the jockey wheel doesn't touch the ground at all, and steadies are used to raise the front of the vans
Another issue is waste disposal. I am retired, and not as fit and able as I once was. If you are near to the site fence, you will have an extraordinary view, but getting the waste hog, and toilet cassette to the disposal points, is very much uphill, and hard work.
The wardens are friendly, and very helpful, and the site is very well maintained. I recommend the site, but thought is required if you struggle getting out and about.
We did not find anywhere in Blythe to eat that was dog friendly.
If you have kids, there is little for them to do, and cliff top walks near to the site could present some danger, although 300 meters north of the site on the cliff top walk, is a field with 6 alpaca's which are as cute as they come, and funny to watch, and we didn't take kids!

A real gem of a site. Glad we found this one. Excellent facilities, friendly wardens, good pitches and an excellent old fashioned pub 100yds away.
We stayed with friends who had caravans too. There is a bus outside the site which runs every 15 minutes into Newcastle or the metro is a short drive into town.
It's really good for walkers and bikers with good cycle paths along the coast.
There is a really nice theatre in town with some good shows coming up. We had a nice trip on the north shields ferry to south shields where there is a market on a Saturday. This was our first visit to this site but we will be spending more time here for long weekends.
I would not take young children as its only small and no big space to play. There is a good playground in town though.

What a smashing little site this is, well placed for views of st Mary's island and lighthouse, ,
Doggy friendly pub just off site (delival arms)
On arrival staff were extremely friendly and helpful and told us to walk round and pick our own pitch. Some of the pitches weren't even, but this was easily dealt with and would be better suited for motor homes than tourers, ,
Nice clean warm showers, wash rooms and driers, ,
Site is great for walking to Whitley bay (2 miles) or seaton sluice (1 mile) check these out
All in all a very enjoyable few days and would go back, last thing make sure your dog is on the lead

Our second visit to this C. C. Site. The location cannot be faulted as it overlooks the sea and St. Mary's Lighthouse. The pitches are mainly level and a mixture of grass and hard standing.
The wardens gave a friendly welcome. The toilet facilities are modern and kept spotlessly clean.
There is excellent walking from the site along the coastal path, both North and South. To the South you can walk as far as the River Tyne, along a fairly level path. The bus stops are approx. A 5 minutes walk.
The pub close to the entrance does excellent meals at a reasonable price and has a excellent selection of real ales ( has previously been CAMRA pub of the year).
This is a site that will get a third visit and probably a few more after that.

Loved this site. Usual high CC standards, simply brilliant wardens; spotless washrooms, spacious pitches. I'd score it as 9. 999999/10 and only drops the 0. 0000001 because there is no screening or demarcation of pitches and I couldn't get the pitch I wanted because the site was really busy! I think you can tell, this was not a big deal to us?
We needed to deploy the Milenco Quattro leveling blocks on the rear wheels and sit in the top cups which was very unusual and meant I couldn't drop the rear steadies but this wasn't a major problem. There aren't many pitches on the site that require blocks for a MH though because the pitches have been well planned and constructed.
The Delavel Arms is indeed a nice pub and the real ales were very well kept. (If my memory serves me correctly, it boasts several years as CAMRA Pub of the Year and runner up in 2010).
Absolutely nothing for kids on the site and this detracts a little because there isn't even a grass area for a kick around. But hey ho, beaches are close at hand. The rock pooling in Hartley Bay was brilliant. The hardest shore crabs in the world - well it is Northumbria!
Do yourself a favour - visit this site and love it too.
