We stayed here for 4 nights as we had to be in Newcastle on the Friday and decided to make a long weekend of it. The site has lovely views out to sea and St Marys lighthouse from all pitches. We were right at the front which is quite a steep slope down from reception. We had to use levelling blocks and lots of wood to get the van pitched correctly. Pitches further up the slope looked to have their vans at very precarious angles to get them level.
When leaving the site we would definitely have struggled without the motor movers as the steep grass was wet and the pitches quite close together.
The toilet block was ok and fairly clean although there was always a lot of hair in the showers and the cubicles were quite small. Unless you go for a shower about 7am you will have quite a long wait as there are only three.
There is a pub The Delaval arms at the site entrance and although it states that it won pub of the year award 2008 and 2009 it looked very tired. There is a good fish and chip shop just up the road in Seaton Sluice and the portions are huge!
It is very easy to drive up along the Northumberland coast from the site and there are plenty of places to visit.
We would stay at the site again if we needed to be in the area but if you want to see Northumberland it would be better to find a site further up the coast.

Stayed here mid may weather was raining when we left home (manchester) but sun came out as we arrived.
Very small site most pitches on a slope. Picked a pitch in the middle with great view of light house. Needed a little help to pitch van but people helped.
Once set up very pleased lovely walk with the dogs to the light house and on into the bay down the beach.
The area has had a big makeover and lovely beaches great for the dogs to. Would go again maybe a little out of season as the site gets very busy.

What a great site both in location and views. The only problem we encountered was getting the caravan level side to side on an awning pitch. Because of the slope down to the sea some people struggled trying to reverse onto the pitch up hill and then level the van which can require some large amounts of blocks and should think this could be interesting in the wet. I would also say to make sure you have a selection of pegs as the hard standing for the awnings is not the normal 'Hard' material used on Caravan Club Sites and so will not always grip the pegs as you might expect. I would say that this site is not ideal for family's with children as there is no play area and a decent walk would be required to find a suitable place. The showers of which there are 3 are also a little tight if you need to supervise your child and 1 of the 3 is even smaller than the others.

Toilet Block clean & tidy, Reception no longer order newspapers-newsagents / shop a half mile away. Post Office & Fish 'n 'Chips a little further. Pub just outside site gates, we went into Taproom (only one open after meals finished) found it to be tired & weary but Bar Staff very obliging. A very nice site-we really enjoyed being there.

We agree with all of the points raised in the previous review but with one addition which maybe of interest.
The reasonably level hardstandings are accessed over grass which is sloping. When we came to leave it was raining and the grass was wet and slippery, we reversed off the hardstanding and turned to face down the slope, however it is not possible to exit by driving around the site due to other pitches / outfits being in the way. A three point turn with a reverse up the slope with much slipping on the wet grass followed by some tricky manoeuvring through the other parked units was required before we could get our wheels onto a hard surface. We managed it but not without giving a few of our neighbours something to watch during breakfast. It maybe worth walking the site and checking your exit route before siting your van onto a pitch. The wardens are helpful and a tractor is available if required.
The coast to the north is excellent if you like wild sandy beaches, dunes and castles, oh and some industrial heritage.

My husband and I stayed at this site for one night on our way up to Northumberland.
The wardens were very friendly and the site itself was very picturesque, overlooking the sea and lighthouse. The touring pitches were all placed so that you got a seaview.
There's not much to do in the immediate area and as it was raining we drove into Whitley Bay to have a look around there. What a disappointment! We found it to be very dirty, run down and not at all like a seaside town.
To summarise, I would recommend Old Hartley campsite for a short stay but be prepared to drive as it is in the middle of nowhere. Would also be ideal for walkers.

To Find Site:- Leave A19 onto A186, at A192 turn left and in a short distance turn right onto B1325. This is not a bad road but take care at railway bridge as vision towards the direction of the site is not clear. At roundabout cross over and go down the side of the Delaval Arms, go slightly right and then left to site entrance which can be seen ahead. An alternative route (as suggested by the CC) is as above but turn right onto A192 and left onto A1148 (Monkseaton Drive) signed for St Marys Lighthouse. Continue to seafront and turn left towards Seaton Sluice. Turn right at roundabout at A193/B1325 then as above.
Old Hartley is situated on a cliff top overlooking the North Sea and St Mary's Lighthouse. There are just over 60 pitches, half can accept awnings. The site slopes from reception quite steeply, however the Club has minimised the effect of this by providing, mainly, level pitches with two rows of paving slabs. The awning pitches have an additional area of gravel hardstanding. All pitches are arranged so that you have a sea view. There is one toilet block which is up to usual Club standards but it can seem under pressure when the site is full. Water and waste service points are adjacent to the toilet block which can mean a heavy haul for grey water disposal from the pitches nearest the sea. There is a service point for motorhomes. There are no onsite play facilities for children. Reception sells milk and toilet chemicals.
There are walks along the cliffs from near the site entrance, one being to St Mary's Lighthouse, where, if you are energetic enough, for a small fee you can climb to the top of the lighthouse. Be warned, its 137 steps! Also nearby are the delights of Whitley Bay (?) and also the centre of Newcastle which can be accessed by bus from near the site entrance. The Delaval Arms, within a short walk of the site, advertises that it does food. On the Blyth road out of Seaton Sluice is the Astley Arms Inn which operates an amazingly good value carvery, the only downside is that it always seems to be very busy! Also on the main road in Seaton Sluice is a good chippy but be warned they are real working men's sized portions! The nearest supermarket is Sainsburys which is at the top of Monkseaton Drive( see site directions above)

Excellent Site. This was our first visit in two years, the toilet block is now refurbished and of good standard. The site, especially the awning pitches can be difficult to set up on, experience has shown that it is best to have the warden use his tractor to site you. The local pub was once very dog friendly but unfortunately is not now. Excellent coastal walks, but beware of the cliffs, especially dog owners. This was our first year with national bus passes and we never used our car all week (dogs go free as well). Go to Whitley Bay and change there, unless you want to go to Newcastle.

Nice site with a good view, the pitches are a bit smaller than normal CC sites but big enough. You will need to use leveling block on most pitches as the site slopes a bit. When we were there the toilet block was closed but they had some excellent porta cabins in use. Which had very clean toilet and showers, they were cleaner than many other sites purpose built toilet blocks. The dog liked the site as he had a nice walk along the coastal path. We will use this site again

Excellent caravan club site, only the shower blocks were too small to take your young child in with you and not enough room for you. Site itself was great could see the sea and st mary's lighthouse from all pitches. Levelling blocks are a must, great to travel into whitley bay and newcastle. DO NOT ARRIVE BEFORE 12 as you can not get booked in and this make it harder for people to get off as it is only a single road out.
