Brilliant site with one of the best views around. This was the 3rd time we had visited Old Hartley - and it never disappoints!
We walked along the coast to North Shields this time - a good walk but all along the flat so it did not seem as far. I was pleasantly surprised as there was quite a bit to do there - indoor pool, Aquarium, Dolls House Museum and plenty of parks and things for kids - as well as the spotless beach.
If you don't want to walk you can catch a bus not far from the campsite into Whitley Bay and then change buses there into North Shields. We have also caught the bus into Newcastle and had a look around the shops and along the river.
I guarantee you will never be bored if you stay at Old Hartley - just don't tell everyone!

The entry into this site is a little confusing. When you turn off the main road keep to the left. The sign is a bit misleading and the Caravan Club sign can be hidden if cars are parked there.
We received a warm and friendly reception. They sell a few basic items. There is an information room and a small laundry with one washer and one dryer.
The toilet/shower block is clean with lots of hot ater. Our pitch was in a lovely position on the cliffs overlooking the sea and St mary's lighthouse. It is a lovely cliff walk into Whitley Bay.
Be careful of the gravel on the pitch. It is very deep and we got the jockey wheel stuck as it sunk right down. It is quite a sloping site. Some pitches have more slope than others.
It is also windy due to the position on the cliffs. TV, phone and internet reception good.
There is a pub just at the end of the road - The Delaval Arms. Whilst it may not look much from the outside it is one of the best pubs we have come across on our 6 month tour around the UK. The ales are good and cheap and the meals are really good value at 4. 50 for a main. The landlord was really friendly and took the time to talk to us. Very rare these days.
If you are at this site would recommend a visit to this pub.

A site with a slope and a lovely view. Probably one of the best site views we've come across. Take your binoculars!
Pitches have some 'levelling' by being cut into the slope but for some reason some still have in-built slopes needing level blocks!
Good site for a base to visit Newcastle (take the bus from the stop just near the site as cars seem to be banned from Newcastle town centre). I would not bother visiting Blythe as it has no redeeming features other than a Morrisons Supermarket with a large car park.
Good location for some coastal cycling as well, level but mind the walkers.
TV reception good and clear satellite with no obstructions.
Good wardens who were a great help and chatty (would even tow your van off your wet pitch if you asked!). They seemed to go 'above and beyond' the needed level.
Facilities absolutely spotless and snug.
We will be back at some point. Seemed to be more dogs than children when we stayed but not much for the kids to do other than walking and the beach a short walk away at Whitley Bay.

The site with a view.
The wardens are very friendly, toilets and showers spotless although small, good pubs serving great food and drinks cheaply.
Very good public transport to Newcastle and blyth. Stunning cliff top walks from outside of the site. Lots more great features but I am concerned if I tell all I will be not be able to get my usual two trips there this year

This campsite has got lovely views if that's what you are looking for. The toilets are not the best and there was always a horrible smell in them.
I didn't find it a friendly campsite and as we had our 2 children with us it was obvious that the site is not child friendly at all.
There are places to visit but as for the site I will not be returning and would not recommend it to families. If you are retired you will enjoy the peace and tranquillity.

Loved this site. I must admit I was worried by the slope at first but need not have been, each pitch was provided with near level hardstanding and did not cause any problems.
The wardens were friendly and made us feel welcome. The toilet block was small and cramped but clean. The views were breath taking and we enjoyed the walk to Seaton Sluice. Will visit again

Cant find anything bad to say about this site at all. Great views out to sea, lovely clean toilet block and friendly wardens.
Lovely 30 minute walk into Whitley Bay along the Links and the promenade.Original 60s style milk bar on prom very clean and well preserved (it was like walking back into my teenage years).
Whitley Bay itself is quite a lively little town and if you like all the usual cheap shops and charity stores to browse (like my wife) you'll love it.Spoilt for choice of pubs within walking distance from the Delaval arms just outside the site to The Kings Arms and Waterford arms just 10 minutes walk along towards Seaton Sluice harbour.
Great transport links with bus stop just outside site with buses every 15 minutes into Newcastle

Beautiful site looking out to sea right up on cliffs.
Not the most modern of club sites, but more than made up for by its location and vista.
Be aware that site is on a severe slope so levelling can be an issue on some pitches. This is not a real child friendly site as there are no facilities for children, saying that there is lots for kids to do in the surrounding area. We thoroughly enjoyed this site and would heartily recommend it.

Well start of the year, what a great site, friendly staff, great pitches (need some blocks on some of them, most are sea view) Slight problem with the toilet block {heating an hot water) Popped in to pub at top for meal an good value for money. Chippy along road GILLS is the best I have had in a long time, bit of a queue but worth it.
If you have kids with you the WAVES leisure centre is worth a visit (5 mins into whitley bay on right) Grandaughter didn't want to come out. Was our first outing this year, will be going back

We love this site but it is definitely a challenge to get the van level due to the severe slope 'down the hill'. Now I know the site conditions I recommend that visitors take with them a couple of good sized blocks about one brick high to place under the front steadies. See all the other reviews - this is a common thread but is not insurmountable.
If you like 'fish sorry, whale & chips' then Seaton Sluice is the place just along the road but did try the Delaval Arms pub next door and could not complain - good quality steaks and good cheerful service.
St Mary's Island is just a short walk away and is really great - there are lots of rock pools for the kids to explore!
