Yet another fantastic weekend at Spen House. This is about the 5th time we have been here and each time is enjoyed thoroughly. Both my girls aged 7 and 9 spent many hours admiring the chickens, rabbits and or course the dog walk. As always the loos / showers / washing up area spotless, fridge freezer for campers in the wash room, also numerous toys for the kids in a container (bats / tennis rackets etc). Play area for the kids is fantastic and a great place for all the kids to make friends and forever memories of happy camping trips. Supermarket 5 mins drive away, Boroughbridge not far either for a mooch about. Look out for the special chicken inwhich my girls and their friend named Punk. You will know it when you see it. Jonathan and Sam are top hosts and always have time for a chat.

Fantastic site.
This was our 2nd visit to this site and we would jump at the chance to go back again. Was given the option of pitching wherever I liked. Owners are very friendly and can't do enough for you. The kids loved the new tyre swing, apparently it goes much higher than the old one, and all the kids on site seemed to enjoy the various dens made in the hedges. Kids also enjoyed helping with the dog walk, and were constantly amused by the chickens wandering about. Toilet facilities were kept very clean and my 4 year old boy was particularly impressed with the small ladder in the urinals so he could actually use them!
Loads of attractions nearby, managed to take in Knaresborough, York and Brimham rocks this time.
Would recommend this site to anyone looking for a peaceful family break.

Great small site and very child friendly. Warm and welcoming and the chickens really do make it - my wife and now still burst out laughing thinking about seeing them run around. Lots of different things to do close by, plus there is a Morrisons about 5 minutes drive away. Didn't get to use the showers, which you do have to pay for, but was never a queue for the loos. It is fairly local to us, so we intend to spend many more weekends here.

The second time I have stayed there in the last month. Initially this was just a test run for my daughter's first camping night away from home as we live locally, but she enjoyed it that much the first time we had to return and will probably do so again. It is a very friendly site with not a great deal there, but that is one of the appeals.
My daughter is 5 and on both occasions she made a friend and they spent hours playing around on the swings. Good to see kids playing outside, with no computers, ipods or TVs in the way. The second time, I had two nephews with me, aged 11 and 16. Even they were running around having fun with water pistols.
Although basic, the site has all you would need and is very clean. The toilet area was good, the washing up facilities fine, with complimentary washing -up liquid thrown in, a nice touch to save you bringing your own. It is not over-run by rules and they even provide things like stands for disposable BBQs so you don't damage the grass and there are plenty of chickens to clean up any food you may drop!
The good thing about staying here is that they don't have the minimum 2-4 night stays which all other sites locally seem to require. On both stays I also just rang on the day for a pitch, which is helpful when you require decent weather.
The only downside I was aware of, was the noise from the A1M early in the morning. This will not stop me staying again in the future.

A really lovely little site!
We (2 adults, 2 children & the family Dog)decided to just get away for an overnight stay and; based on the great reviews, decided on Spen House.
We've been spoilt in our relatively short camping history, with the bigger 'all singing, all dancing' sites and I was a little apprehensive that we'd be disappointed with a smaller site.
But this couldn't have been further from the truth; the whole stay was a delight. We pulled down the drive and were immediately greated by Jonathan, who was just what you needed - A very jolly & friendly gentleman, who showed us around.
The site is basically the fields belonging to their farm; it gives a real homely friendly feel, which for us was just perfect! - You can buy their eggs, use their freezers to store food & ice blocks and he always seems on hand, should you need any help.
We were in the first field and you can pretty much pitch where you fancy. There's a little playground area at the bottom of the field, which the kids loved (judging by the muddiness of their clothes!) and you can keep an eye on from your Tent.
There are bins/tap etc dotted nearby, which was handy.
The toilet/shower facilities are a little basic; but that said, there's everything you need there and Jonathan always seemed to be cleaning them - Given it was a rainy weekend when we went, he did a great job!
There's a lovely little wash-up area that's an old barn - It comes complete with bird nests in the eaves; it also has a little tub with sports gear in for the kids to play with.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and I wish we could have stayed there longer. I would definitely recommend this site

We stayed here for 1 night (about 10 adults + 6 kids). Owner was very friendly, toilets and showers were cleanest we have seen yet, luxury toilet tissue! Freshly laid eggs available, and lots of brochures there if needed on nearby attractions. The chickens roam free which is nice.
Site was big and we had a spot away from everyone else (so we hopefully didn't disturb them!). Good park with swings for the kids. Morrisons just round the corner and we had a nice walk round nearby knarsborough the following day.
We can highly recommend this site

Ok site, but basic, not many flat pitches. Oo lighting so torches are a must after dark. Showers 50p for 5 mins, only 1 shower between males, (looked like it had never ever been cleaned,so footwear essential in shower) and 1 shower at owners house for females, very low pressure shower (shared mine with half dozen flies-needs elec fly zapper thing) No room to dress/undress in shower room, very cramped.
Male and female toilets shared, only separated by panel with urinals behind it! (wasn't comfortable with the sharing bit, but also 1 (female only) toilet next door.
Owners friendly, chickens even friendlier, although cute, you are invaded by chickens as soon as they smell your dinner cooking, which we didn't mind as we have 3 chickens at home
The white swan pub 5mins stroll away, apparently they don't welcome children I was told, but didn't have any children with us. Only 1 lager pump, 1 beer pump (john smiths) no guinness etc, but landlord friendly enough.
If you can cope with basic then its ok

We have just returned from a three night stay at Spen house camp site. The owners are very friendly and welcoming and we were left to pitch where we wanted. This is a small family run site, very quiet, apart from the Saturday night when other campers just there for one night were making noise well into the small hours! The children loved the little play area and soon made lots of friends and were off into the bushes making dens etc. The toilets and showers were clean but basic. There were two showers taking 50p coins for 5 mins water, nice and hot-but did get bit busy when site was full. The owners had lots of friendly chickens that liked to venture into tents looking for crumbs very cute! Close by attractions are Stump Cross Caverns, Light Water Valley and Newby Hall all worth a visit. There was no rush to put the tent down on our departure day which was nice. There is no shop on site, but Morrisons is not far away. We'll most definitely be coming back here and would recommend the site if your looking for a small and very friendly place for a short stay.

Friendly people.
Spacious site.
Very good swing set for young children.
Toilets at the start of the site. Not many but clean. Didn't use the 50p showers. Lit very well at night.
If you have small children they can run through the swings into the field. Just beware if they like to run off they can run right past the toilet block, down past the house on the drive and onto the street
Chickens are amusing. The owners let you feed them at certain times. You can join in the dog walk too. My daughter got an egg for her help and she was very happy.
We cannot tell you about the surrounding area as only went for one night. We found the directions very easy.
They are making changes - more fixed EHU. Which hopefully will fix the 10pm trips to the fusebox!
But you get to meet some friendly faces with their torches
We would come back for the chickens and the friendly owners.

As stated by others an excellent little site.
Our girls loved the playground, feeding the chickens and other animals. The eggs from the chickens were also excellent.
Great access from the A1 and despite this, you could not hear any traffic or other noise to disturb the peace and quiet of the countryside.
Owners were extremely helpful and friendly - We will be booking to stay again very soon!
