Just a couple of points to add to my previous review (July 2011). There is now a fridge freezer for the use of campers, which is a welcome addition, especially over Sundays when the shops are closed and it's not possible to buy fresh food or milk.

On that topic, although ferries sail to and from the islands on Sundays, there is no bus service and the petrol stations and shops are closed, so be prepared.

Site prices per night are now £9 for a small tent and £11 for a large tent.

The further of the two ladies' showers seems to give a lot more time for the money than the nearer shower. The meters must be adjusted differently as I found that 60p gave a luxurious shower in one cubicle while £1.00 ran out before I had finished in the other.

I have camped here several times since the early 1990s, when there were no facilities at all (and rarely other tents either). The location is, of course, fantastic.

Facilities are basic, to say the least, but perfectly adequate. The area available for camping is huge, though unbelievably on a recent visit I had folk pitch their tent within about ten feet of mine (the next nearest tent was perhaps sixty feet away).

The terrain is such that it is possible to get a bit of shelter should it be wild. The shop which used to be here has closed, but neither Tarbert nor Leverburgh are very far. Things to do? Well, you may have heard of the beaches, and a circuit of South Harris (taking in the Golden Road) by bike is strenuous, but very rewarding. Great spot, adequate facilities.

After a few days in Skye, did not know what to expect of moonscape Harris. We had the fantastic discovery of Horgabost Campsite on the South West Coast. Words cannot describe the stunning setting. The white, white sands and turquoise shallow sea. With five of us jam packed into a motorhome and travelling with friends in their tent, we found the site to be just what we required. Great fun for the kids who played on the beach safely til sunset, cycled their bikes round the campsite and had hours of fun jumping the dunes. Plenty to do in the area, so much so, we extended our trip by an extra three nights and even so, we were all reluctant to leave.

Yes, the facilities are slightly basic, but just part of the camping experience and certainly did not detract. Having just stayed in Skye, the comparison was good, having being charged twice as much per night for only slightly better facilities. A very reasonable £12. 50 per night per motorhome, made for a cheap holiday. Only request would have been electric hook up but not a huge necessity.

Recommend the Butty Bus in Leverburgh for a tasty breakfast, Northton for a stunning walk along to a ruined chapel over deserted beaches then back for a hot choc at Temple Cafe. Buy your tea in Croft 36 - delicious homebaking and freshly caught crab. A day can be spent at Luskentyre beach doing nothing but running across the sands, and again a great cafe in Hebrides Art at Seilebost. Perfect surrounds for walking and cycling and near enough to go for day trips to Lewis and North Harris.

We can't wait to return to Horgabost, the perfect family spot for the perfect family holiday. Thankyou!

This was our third visit to the site and we spent 7 nights here this time. As other reviewers have said, the facilities may be basic when compared with other sites. However, it was busy when we were there and the showers, toilets, basins and wash ups were always clean.

The location is superb and whilst some feel the fees are pricey for what you get, I feel you have to remember how fortunate we are to be able to holiday in such a beautiful location and it remains so, because of such sites that accommodate and provide these facilities for us visitors to this glorious unspoilt island. And hence with that in mind I am happy to pay such fees.

It's great to be able to pitch where you'd like to be, to have a site that is not plastered with signs of 'do this' and 'don't do that' yet it provides water and toilets and adequate showering facilities, what more do we need on a camp site when camping!

The mobile shop which visits the site is an incredible source of supplies and the fresh fish we bought from it was delicious. The Temple Café in nearby Northton is definitely worth visiting too.

To sum up, it's just fabulous! Enjoy!

We first visited this site in May 2008 when it first opened and were very impressed at the standard of facility, although the showers were not connected then. We promised ourselves a return trip and spent 6 nights this year. The setting cannot change it is truly spectacular and we were blessed with good weather. The facilities although very clean and well cared for and maybe for some a little basic for the modern taste, but I would rather pay £1 for a shower than none at all. I found the owners very helpful and willing to listen to concerns. The privacy issue is a concern for some and on several occasions I had to share the changing area, but so what. The casual users of the beach and the shower area must be a concern, especially when the coaches call, but it didn't seem to faze the owners and the place was always well cleaned. The lack of CDP and grey water disposal is something that perhaps might be addressed, but we will certainly come back again.

The site is located in probably one of the most beautiful locations in the Western Isles, if not the UK. It is surrounded by an amphitheatre of mountains, with its own beach and views across to Taransay.

Tents can pitch in a field at the top of the dunes, and if you get the right spot, with views directly out onto the beach and water. Motorhomes and caravans however, are restricted to the field behind, which unfortunately due the height of the dunes means for the most part, no view.

Payment is by an honesty box system, with prices (which seem to change somewhat frequently judging by the reviews here) posted on the gate. The toilet/shower block and small shop are located in three shipping containers, which whilst painted a green which blends in, still look a little out of place in such a beautiful spot. The toilets/showers were clean - that is as clean as you'll get next to a beach with a lot of sand trampled in. There is no CDP disposal point.

This site looks great for tents but quite frankly in our motorhome we felt somewhat ripped off. The fees in late July were £14 a night; we've spent half as much with twice the facilities on similar certificated sites. When you add in £1 for each occupant for a shower it starts to get quite expensive for what it is. Whilst the location is great, in a motorhome or caravan you don't even get the views, so you do wonder what you're paying for.

The 'wild' camping bit also we did not really appreciate. This is not really 'wild' camping, more 'disorganised' camping. Wild camping to us is camping in a spot away from it all with no one else around; this is not the case here and at busy times the site feels quite claustrophobic - and your neighbours may be a lot closer than you think.

If the owners could create a decent toilet/shower block (perhaps a second one away from the beach in the old garage complex) and add some facilities such as CDP this would be at great site. However, it is too expensive for what it is just now, at least for motorhomes/caravans.

The site gets very busy at the weekend when the owners of the caravans left here all season arrive with their children. Space then is at a premium and you may have someone just a few feet away, spaces get filled in as the day progresses!

Stunning location though and clean if basic facilities.

The ultimate in convenience food is available with a gourmet dining delivery service to your tent/caravan/motor home! Croft 36 are just the best reason ever for visiting here with superb food also available at their croft a few miles down the road at Northton in a beach hut with an honesty box.

The only public CDP on Harris is at Leverburgh Ferry Terminal which was backed up and unusable when I was there. No telephone number to report it either.

The Golden Road on the east coast is a must see. The difference between the west and east coasts is remarkable. Also the road out to Huisinis (the north west point) is a roller coaster road with an eagle observatory half way along and beautiful bays at the end.

We stayed here for one night when we were unable to get onto the Lickisto Blackhouse site. Pitching is random and there seemed to be a lot of caravans permanently pitched there and taking the flattest spots with the best views, although no-one was using them at the time.

Toilets were clean and modern, although the shower area reminded me of the communal changing areas at school – no time to be shy as the shower cubicle is too small to get dried and dressed in, and so you are just behind a shower curtain separating you from the toilet area. Having said that the showers are good and a pound gets you plenty of hot water. There were queues morning and afternoon, and the floor became very sandy.

Next to a lovely beach. Pay by putting your money into an envelope and leaving it in a box by the gate. Would we stay again? – yes but only if Lickisto was full. Good for families – lots of room for running around and next to a nice beach.

Just returned from this Harris and stayed 5 nights on this site.

Many positive things about it most notable of which is the incredible setting. The views, the beach, the sky. Wonderful. It's worth a visit for this alone. Words can't describe the beauty of it.

The facilities really are basic. Showers have no truly private dressing area. Two showers in ladies and when you step out it's into a communal dressing area separated from the rest of the loos by a curtain. It was quiet when we were there so rarely found another person using them at the same time.

No CDP or grey water drop. You have to drive to Leverburgh (Ferry terminal) to empty the toilet cassette (about 20 minutes) but as you need to drive there to buy food you can combine both trips. People seemed to be emptying grey water onto the grass - but there's loads of space and on dunes so it drains well.

Take plenty of pound coins as the showers have coin slots. A pound is enough for two showers so there is often credit in the machine when you get there.

The owners responded to the comments in the visitors book promptly which was cheering.

Well recommended if you don't mind basic facilities.

Spent one night on this site. Fantastic setting and lovely beach. Plenty of short (or long) walks on beach or hills. Well kept site - find your own spot. No EHU or CWD. Basic but clean toilets. Forget the showers - ladies had no privacy for dressing other than a curtain separating the area from toilets. Honesty box for payment. £11 for motorhome which I felt was a bit much for such basic facilities. The owners are really lovely people and certainly kept the facilities that are there clean. Mixed feelings over this site.
