I think this is an expensive site for what you get, we were lucky enough to get a flat, hard standing pitch as they had lost our booking. However the site is on a slope with good views across the dales.
Very pretty area but we found the surrounding footpaths overgrown with waist height grass and head height ferns and some just disappeared ! I would recommend always wearing stout footwear and walk to Masham via the road, it's easier and quicker. Black Sheep brewery is worth a visit as is the newly opened Indian restaurant at The Bruce Arms.
Staff were friendly and the pub serves a nice pint of Black sheep, pool table was cheap at 50p a go.

We have just returned from our second visit to this site. The toilet/showers are very clean and on both occasions we never experienced much noise from the pub. Granted, the pitches are very small and on weekends all of the green area is taken up but our 8 year old son had the time of his life playing in the adjoining field with all of the other older children - without this though there would have been nowhere for him to play on the site! owners very friendly. Very relaxing holiday. Will return again

We visited this site at the end of May. We were shown to our pitch which was very small. After we had pitched the tent our neighbour returned who informed us that we had pitched on his car parking space, things were very cramped. The pitches at the bottom of the site are level but the rest of the site is on a bank.
The bar is nice with a good outside area. The food in the restaurant is not great, smash potato was not what we expected when we ordered. Also the restaurant was not clean, place mats and salt and pepper dirty splattered with other people’s food.
There is one toilet block in the middle of the site, there was always plenty of toilet roll, in the three days that we never saw them cleaned. (we were camped right next to the block) The showers were not clean, the water pressure was really poor on the electric shower, the showers are 20p and are on a timer.
Electric hook ups are available, the site are also happy to lend you their hook up if yours is not long enough, this was a great first impression.
Overall a poor site, we would not return

Spent 4 nights at this campsite over Easter. Fantastic views, great for walking. Nice pint of black sheep ale in the Black Swan. No park for the kids so have to make your own entertainment.
The site itself is behind the pub and is on a slope. Showers are very poor, no pressure and the water only dribbles out.
Apart from that very friendly staff and we did have a nice time.

Spent a week here at half term. The owner was there to greet and site us on arrival, very friendly.
This is a family run business which reflects in the laid back atmosphere of the camp site. Very clean and well kept. Our two children had a fantastic time playing on the grassed areas, we felt safe as there was not much traffic around the site. Any traffic was slow moving.
The toilet block was basic but clean and functional and no problems with hot water and no queuing. There was also some sinks at the rear of the block for plate washing etc.
The pub on site served a good pint or two of Black Sheep Ale! Food here was also very good and reasonably priced. Also had a good children's menu. Breakfast is also available for campers at a good price. Highly recommended!
All in all we had an excellent week here and the views are fantastic. Some really nice walks, either long or short. Druids Temple is well worth a visit. The kids loved climbing on the rocks! Masham is only a short distance away with all the local shops you'll need.
Other reviews mentioned that the pub was noisy, neither myself, my wife or my two young children had any problems getting to sleep, very quiet.
I would recommend this site to anybody who wants to visit the Yorkshire dales or just to simply take it easy.

I have just been to the site for the 3rd year in a row, the view from the site is excellent, the site is well kept, the staff are friendly and the beer even better.
However the toilet/shower and dish washing area need some urgent TLC, I don't mind the 20p for a shower but I do like a little bit of pressure on the water, some of the female members of our party struggled with washing their hair. A shame but otherwise I've had a great weekend.

Nice site clean and tidy. Chemical toilet point is in a bad place next to the holiday cottages, a long walk if you're at the bottom of the field. Great views. The pub could do with opening earlier about 5pm to enjoy a pint after a hard days walking, but still a good site

The Black Swan is a campsite that involves camping on a grassy bank behind a pub in rural North Yorkshire.
And as such, it does exactly what it says on the tin.
If you're happy to camp behind a pub (ie a place where a few people may make a bit of a racket next to your pitch at kicking-out time. ) then you'll love it - as we did.
If you want a tranquil holiday park where your every whim will be catered for. Forget it.
This is pub camping at it's best, and if that's what you're looking for, then get yourself there!
We'll be back.

We arrived on Thursday in the last week of May for a long weekend. The site was very busy and the hard standing's that we had been on in the past in quieter times were occupied. We tried to pitch above the toilet block on the centre grass area, but there was no way that we could have got an awning up.
We eventually pitched below the toilet block parked across-ways and levelled off the van (ish). As the weekend approached, the site really maxed out, far more than the limited facilities could cope with.
The toilet block was a bit 'high', so we resorted to making full use of our van's facilities. Saying that, there was a very good atmosphere on the site between the tenters and vans, but kids playing ball games within a few feet of the van made me very twitchy. It sometimes seems that tenters have no concept of the damage that can be caused to a van by footballs.
On Saturday, there was a huge movement of vans and tents back home, and the wonderful views and tranquillity were restored to the way we remembered them on our first visit. We were able to take our small dog with us through the fields adjoining the site, so walking the dog was no problem. We did not use the pub on this visit as we had the kids with us, but the wife and I left the eldest in the van revising for GCSE's while we sloped off to the Theakstones Brewery for an educational and recreational visit!
We will visit here again, but we will avoid busy periods and stick to the quieter weekends.

Was very disappointed with this site. From the website it looks lovely. The views were superb and you can see for miles, if you can see past the other vans crammed in front of you that is! We put it down to being a bank holiday and that they had tried to fit as many in as possible. At £25 a night with a 4 night minimum I expected something special. The site itself is at the back of the pub situated on a steep slope. Be prepared to use lots of bricks! The facilities are basic but clean enough. There is no dog walk or recreation ground. The pub does serve a decent pint of Black Sheep however dogs are not allowed in. I noticed that many of the visitors to the site choose to leave their dogs yapping away in the van whilst they go out and about. There was no privacy due to your neighbour being feet away.
On a positive note the guy who checked us in was very friendly and helpful.
This site is in quite a good position although it is a good walk or a car journey to get anywhere. I can imagine it's lovely to enjoy a pint outside in the summer.
