We have just spent the easter weekend at this site and enjoyed every minute of it.
The site is on a slope but this only allows you to enjoy the view rather than staring at other caravans! The view is abolutely stunning whatever the weather you can see for miles.
The toilet block is clean and well maintained with hot running water. As opposed to the previous post I myself did not have a problem paying a measly 20 pence for a hot shower as I understand that it prevents people leaving them running and wasting water.
The pub was warm and inviting with a good selection of drinks. We also had a meal which was superb and reasonably priced.
The site was busy on this weekend but we didn't feel cramped we had enough room for a barbecue and our awning.
There is so much to explore in the local area that we WILL be visiting again.
I also disagree with the previous post that there is nowhere for children to play as there was plenty of grassed area even on a busy weekend, I don't think it is the siteowners responsibility to provide entertainment for your children.
This site is one of our favourites and definitely one for any lovers of rural countryside. We have already booked in for their beer festival we have heard so much about from locals. We will tell you about it when we return!

There was no obvious site reception to check in etc. The site was quite sloped but did have some hard standing areas for touring caravans. The toilet block wasn't very clean although the weather didn't help (rain + mud!) but no extra cleaning was done to combat the problem. It was also pretty cold in the toilets and we felt it needed modernising. It would have been a bit better if we didn't have to pay for the showers. I was glad that some family lived 3/4 hour away so we could use their showers. The play area was under rubble due to them having construction done to make (i think) holiday lets so the children had no where to play. No shops around unless you went to Masham or further but the pub was ok.

A last minute booking for us, we still managed to get a pitch ok. However, The field itself is quite sloped and there are lots of holes in the grass where the pitch was. The pub is expensive.- two pints of lager and three fruit shoots for £9.45. And there is nowhere for the children to play. There was just one seesaw. Meals were expensive too. The site is over priced at £25 for a tent pitch with hook up. There was no shop anywhere nearby. The plus points - the shower block was very clean and and warm and the staff were polite.

Well we're just back from a lovely weekend in Yorkshire - though the campsite was not the highlight! The setting is fantastic - even with the grey clouds the view was incredible. But - and this is a big but - the site doesn't really help you relax to enjoy it. The pitches are small - it's a narrow field and has 2 edge on and 2 side on caravans spanning it. They're just separated by the road. The site is on the side of a hill. It doesn't flood - which is kind of useful this year - but that's because the water is running down the steep hill. They have started to terrace the pitches for motorhomes and caravans, but that's just at the sides. In the middle the fronts were jacked up and the rears touching the ground. Tents were stuck down at the bottom of the hill! Facilities are quite poor really. The gents just had 2 showers (20 p each, broke down at least once over the weekend), 3 loos and 2 urinals. Simple frosted glass window and door opening straight into the main room. And then there's the pub at the top of the hill. So it's noisy and stays noisy until the pub closes. And even then it's noisy. Great if you're in the pub, but not if you've got small children trying to sleep. It was really busy - so busy that they commandeered the 'playing area', parked 4 cars and put 7 tents up on it - and there was really only room for 2! There are some great walks in the area. But the nearest town is Masham and that was a fair trek away. So you do need to be well prepared.

The static itself was lovely - very clean with all the equipment you would need , except for garden chairs.however it was 5 metres from the pub and pub garden AND the children's play area which consisted of a see saw.Incredibly noisy and lots of footballs bashing against static and our car. To be fair , at our request the owner did ask for football play to cease at 10.30 pm.
Everyone else was squashed in, in the van and tent area but seemed to have a good time.A couple of people who saw we were in one of the four statics commented how much space we had , and that they did not have space to put up chairs , table and BBQ .
The village of Fearby is beautiful and the views from the site are really lovely. Will try somewhere else as there was so little playing area for the children but there are loads of places to visit in this area.

A very basic site, but everything is very clean and the location is wonderful! The owners were helpful and friendly, but we found the pub incredibly smoky (we weren't allowed to go into the non-smoking section as it was being used for a domino drive, which meant we had to sit in the Competition Smoking room- not too great!). If we go back, it'll be after 1 July.

We have just returned from an Easter weekend at the Black Swan. My expectations were raised by their wonderful website. On arrival we were impressed by the beautiful views and the well kept grass. The site was on rather more of a slope than their website would imply. As always the first thing my wife went to look at was the toilet block. To say that we were less than impressed is not an understatement. Although reasonably clean they are extremely dated and are a reflection that the proprietor not wishing to re-invest in his business. On the Friday night we suffered a power cut, which it became evident that this was not a supply issue but again due to poor infrastructure! Subsequent to this the toilet block was periodically left in darkness throughout the weekend and the shower cubicles locked (by the owner)to prevent use, one assumes to reduce electric consumption. Overall the area has a lot to offer, but I would not recommend you stay at the black swan. Better sites can be found cheaper and better value for money.

It's the second time we have stayed here and we will be going again next time to try out the new hard standings we were told about. The owners hospitality is wonderful, we had a puncture and were unable to get the wheel off, he not only helped us to take it off but took it to be repaired, saving us time putting the spare on driving to a garage and then having to take it off to put the origional one on after repair! The Steak they serve is next to none, locally supplied and well presented. The pitch we occupied had views of moorland in one direction and the Vale of York in the other. We did quite a lot of walking using their published walks and apart from the odd deviation from the track they were enjoyable. We will certainly goining back next year and would recommend the park

Arrived to a pre-booked camping pitch and was shown to the bottom end of the steep bank. This was the one space that was left. We had seen pictures of this site and read the reviews and thought we were onto a real winner, but don't be deceived by these. The site was that full that the tents were practically touching. Its understandable that people want to go camping during the summer holidays but this site had surely made the most of every part of the site. If a fire broke out in one of the tents they would certainly have all gone up. We were shown to a corner pitch overlooking a corn field, which was a lot nicer than the other pitches as they overlooked the hedge and the views could not be seen unless you were up the top end of the hill, designated for caravans. We had tucked ourselves right into the corner, much to our mistake, as when we returned in from a lovely day out found we had to step over guide-ropes from a large tent that had been squeezed into a space not big enough for them. In doing this we couldn't park our car next to our tent and therefore couldn't use our light, kettle and keep our coolbox cold using the cars battery etc. It was also very annoying having to carry all our things backwards and forwards to the car when packing up. The toilet block/washing up area is halfway up the hill, the toilets were clean when we arrived but extremely small and dated, only two showers for the ladies for the whole of the site. (20p per shower) Trying to brush your teeth or use the mirror through a queue of people isn't good. Also no child facilities that I could see. Although there was a laundry room but didn't try it. We also only found the drinking water tap on the last day. Bins were at the top of the steep hill, so would suggest you take your rubbish in the car on your way out. Amenity's not very well signposted. Children's play area consists of a swing and a slide which is right next to the pub. Not very good if you are right at the bottom of the hill, as we didn't feel it safe enough to let our child out of our sight in this area. There isn't anywhere to play ball games etc unless a pitch becomes free. The surrounding area is lovely and there is a large playing field next to the river Ure on the way into Masham. Wouldn't go back to this site again, but its standard was reflected in the price, £23 for two nights.

As noted in other reviews, the site is steeply sloping, with a small toilet/shower block half way down the narrow site. The owner is very friendly and regularly walks around the site to check everything is ok. In fact, the owner is not just friendly, but very helpful and went above and beyond to make sure we had a space on a very busy weekend. As the slope is quite steep, the pitch can seem a bit cramped compared to other sites, but in reality this just stops you spreading your stuff over acres of site! The pub is very friendly and next to a small play area. The beer is good and staff friendly. To be honest, we found the food to be a little sub standard, but I'd give the place the benefit of the doubt as this was after England were knocked out of the World Cup and they were very very busy. Fearby - the village the Black Swan is in - is lovely and nearby Masham is a delightful little town. We can heartily recommend the King's Head in the centre for both beer and food. Many years ago we enjoyed the Theakston's brewery tour and I am certain this is still as good a way to pass an afternoon as any. I forgot to bring the OS map of the area so can't comment on walks etc. But I'm sure there are plenty. We're a bit torn whether to return. It's great having a "proper" pub on site - along with a small play area for the kids. We have been visiting a different site for many years and the staff at Black Swan are infinitely better. On the down side I would hesitate before ordering food again, you are on the edge of the "proper dales" (i.e. Wensleydale) and there isn't much use-able space for kicking a football about etc. On the site. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend the site and encourage all to stay!
