Just back from three days at Walkmill over the bank holiday weekend.

This was our children's (7 & 5) introduction to camping in the UK and they thoroughly enjoyed the trip, especially the campsite trampoline!

The directions that were emailed were very easy to follow and on arrival we were directed to our spot. We had chosen to have an ehu so we were on the top half of the site, near the house, with lovely views down across the field to the river bank.

The grass pitch was nice and level and there was plenty of space between each pitch so although it was full over the weekend it didn’t seem like we had no space. The tents that were down by the river had vast amounts of space to themselves shared only with the lambs and the sheep in the field with them. The one negative I would say would be if you were camping down by the river and trekking up to the toilets at night it would be hard to avoid some of the sheep muck in the field as there was a lot of it, didn’t bother us as we were at the top part and didn’t have to walk through the field in the dark but something to be wary of if you have little kids etc.

Lots of bleating from the sheep with the lambs which we didn’t find off putting at all, our kids rather enjoyed it but I guess some people may not like it. I would certainly prefer that over loud music etc that you get at other sites. Overall a very nice peaceful site set in some lovely countryside and close to some nice attractions.

We visited Warkworth Castle which was very good and Dunstanburgh Castle which wasn’t that enjoyable as a castle but had a lovely walk along to the coast to get to it. Amble market on the Sunday morning seemed mainly to be cheap tat but there was a fish stall selling some wonderful seafood at good prices and we got some delicious Cumberland sausages from the butchers stall there.

The static caravan that is used as the toilet / shower block was exceptionally clean over the whole three days that we were there, even though the site was full for two of the nights. As well as the two toilets in the static itself there are two chemical toilets in two little huts at the end of the static and I was told that the plumbing is in for these now and the chemical ones will shortly be replaced with proper porcelain ones.

There is a large trampoline that our kids loved (and the other children on the site as well) and a box full of other outdoor games such as cricket, croquet and badminton.

We had a wonderful three day break and will be back……excellent value for money.

Set in an idyllic spot next to the river, with sheep in the fields (including young lambs) this site offers a very relaxing get away. The facilities are clean and tidy; the wife enjoyed the 'proper' bathroom located in the mobile home. The home also has a lounge that has a tv for those that feel the need. Our level pitch was nestled in a crook of the river, which whilst a bit of a walk to the facilities, and didn't have electric, was a perfect place to unwind and escape from the rest of the world.

The site is well placed to explore the beautiful Northumberland coast line.

Small convenience stores are located in nearby Amble and Shilbottle and there are 2 supermarkets in Alnwick about 15 minutes away.

We were made to feel very welcome by the owners.

The only slight negative was getting our caravan up the track at the end of our stay. It is a stone track up a fairly steep bank which caused a fair amount of consternation trying to maintain momentum.

Overall an excellent, basic site providing brilliant value for money

One of the warmest welcomes I have ever had. We have been members of the caravan club for years and always had a good welcome but the welcome the warden gave us was second to none. Nothing is a problem to her and the site is very well maintained. I would also like to thank her and other caravanners when we had a few problems. THANK YOU

This is a fantastic site especially for children. We took our two grandsons in August last year and they loved it. The trampoline is great and the static caravan is really good especially for the campers. We took our touring caravan and our son camped at the riverside the owner is very friendly and helpful it's the best site that we've been on when taking the children, it's really safe with only a track and quite a way from the main road which suited us. Will definitely be returning this year even though we only live 30 minutes away there is so much to do and the beaches are beautiful.

We chose this site as we wanted to switch off, relax and enjoy some peace and quiet. Walkmill delivered this in abundance.

The directions provided by the site were easy to follow and when we arrived we were met by Claire. The pitch for our touring caravan overlooked the lower field and river, with plenty of space for our children to enjoy (in particular the trampoline).

The static caravan was immaculate and even though they were fully booked whilst we were there, we never had to queue. There are also plenty of games & puzzles in the static for your children to enjoy on a rainy day.

We bought our bikes and cycled from the campsite to Almouth & back. A bit of a challenge with all the hills, but we and our two boys managed it (just!). Alnwick castle was fantastic, so much so we visited twice. Broomstick training was fun and our boys loved the knight training. Parking at Almouth breach for sandcastles and rock pooling was £1. 50 a day.

We would highly recommend this site and will be returning.

Thank you for a wonderful stay!

We first chanced upon Walkmill in August 2012 and were immediately entranced. We have now spent so much time here our caravan has grown roots! To say we love this place is an understatement, to us it represents everything a caravan site should be: delightful location, delightful atmosphere and, above all, the most delightful hosts in Claire and Nick. As far as we are concerned, there simply aren't enough superlatives to describe this beautiful place. It doesn't matter where we go, we always end up back here time and time again.

Most reviews of this site have been very positive but I think I need to give another less favourable view of it. It's certainly a nice location and the people running it seem really nice, but to say its 5 minutes from Warkworth is stretching it a bit. The approach road/track is pretty awful and in total must be about 3 miles. You need to drive quite slowly to be safe. Also, the facilities are limited. There is one shower that serves the caravans and the tents and the Gents toilet floor is dodgy to say the least. We went with another couple in their tourer and like us they felt that the impression given is you can fairly easily walk into Warkworth. Fortunately we do a lot of walking but it'll take you at least 45 minutes to get there. You need to be aware too that as the kids' facilities are in the middle of the site, if there any about it can be quite noisy, despite the location!

Beautiful quiet rural location. Owners are extremely friendly and helpful. Fantastic location with lots of safe space for kids to play, especially the trampoline (inspired!), plus they loved the sheep! Static caravan that is used as toilets & shower was immaculate. Will definitely return. Warkworth only 5 minute drive away, the castle is well worth seeing. Beaches around the area are gorgeous and car parking is value for money. Lovely ice cream parlour nearby. Thank you for a wonderful weeks stay.

We chose this site as it isn't too far from where we live, and we simply love rural Northumberland.

Being fairly new caravanners we are picking sites which are not too far away, and have decent reviews. We think we have found a 'jewel in the crown' which we will definitely return to.

To access the site was a little nerve racking for us first timers, some tight turns, narrow roads, a track and 3 cattle grids to negotiate plus the odd suicidal sheep. However these little quirks simply adds to the absolute charm and the idyllic location of this site.

The owner was very welcoming and showed us our Huge pitch and sorted out the hook up etc. The static caravan which acts as the toilet and shower facilities was only 15 yards away. The static was unavailable for our first morning, but Clare opened up her own family bathroom for people to use! Unbelievable!

If you get the chance to use the facilities, have a look at all the photos, including those of the house being built from a shell.

After this the static was available and was spotlessly clean with full comforts available for people to use.

For those with kids, there are outdoor toys and a trampoline in the middle of the field, which keeps them entertained while you set up, and some beautiful scenery for the adults ( the trampoline was very tempting, but her indoors gave strict orders to keep off)ha ha.

Warkworth is a 5 minute drive and has a couple of nice pubs, and the beach is gorgeous and after a good couple of hours walking, the pub simply had to be visited. Amble is another 5 minutes along the road and has a good selection of shops in the high street, however the harbour fish and chips could of been better.

Alnwick is about a 20 minute drive, and is simply lovely, the market being a bonus, mmmmmmm strawberries and cream, and a pound shop too !

So how would we sum up this site? No Wifi, no internet, no mobile signal, no TV signal. Absolutely perfect! Wandering by the river, watching herons fishing from the other bank, grass kept short by the local sheep while avoiding their little deposits, peace, beauty, small, friendly, going to sleep to the sounds of owls calling in the nearby wood.

Divine, just divine.

Brilliant little camp site. Only a hand full of pitches, half of the being on total flat ground the others on slightly sloped ground, so get there early to get the pick of the bunch!

The sheep do roam wherever they want so the field is scattered with sheep droppings, but the pitching areas are totally clean, and well mown. The ground was quite hard and damaged afew of pegs, until the rain came then the pegs went in far easier

Trampoline on site, plus a box full of footballs, bats and balls, cricket etc. Plus loads of games inside the static caravan.

The gents toilet floor is quite well soaked so feels like your going to fall through it. But the ladies is immaculate, plus that is where the shower and bath are. They do however ask £1 per person to go in the honesty box if you use the facility. There is a freezer to use for icepacks, electric for charging (donation in box), comfy surroundings if the weather isn't too kind.

All in all excellent cheap little campsite, with very friendly owners. Like their website says don't follow satnav. I aimed for warworth castle then followed the insructions on the website, plus the sat nav as back up as 'station road' isn't signposted, it's signposted shilbottle (very first left after the river coquet)
