I recently spent a night at this little gem of a site- found and booked by my other half, thanks to this website. So, I figured I would do the decent thing and write my own review.

Due to the sites isolation I decided I would research the route. The directions given on the site details page helped me to find it easily using Google earth. They are more than adequate to help you find your way should you chose the coastal route in from the East. I didn't want to come that way so I then researched the route in from the A1, direct from the West- I didn't want to go all the way out to the coast road then back in. With prior preparation beforehand, finding the site was very very easy. I would recommend doing the same if you have time, it might save you a faff on the country roads. For info, I left the A1 at the junction just North of Leamington Lane (you can turn right across the dual carriageway), followed the road into Guyzance, past Guyzance Hall, out past Togston Hall B&B and turned right after that to cross the railway bridge as described in the directions mentioned on the details page. (Google map it to see what I am talking about. )

The site itself is very secluded, next to a meandering river with rapids up and down stream which give a lovely noise, like a distant roar. The site is very quiet, well kept and set in a lovely area with abundant wildlife present. The river was in flood during our time there due to heavy rains (although it was nowhere near the level of the campsite itself, so no need to worry). The caravans were on an upper level, nearer the house and down a sort of bank nearer the river is the tent area. I can imagine this bank being quite slippery in wet weather but it shouldnt be too much of a problem for any driver worth his or her salt. The August bank holiday was a rather wet and windy one but for the night we stayed it was nice and clear, calm and dry- lucky us!

I don't think we met the owners while we were there- although we were greeted by someone, I forget his name (sorry!), but I believe he was the warden. He welcomed us, showed us to our pitch, showed us round the site and its facilities and gave us information on do's and don't's.

The facilities are of good quaility but are limited in number. In a static caravan there is one decent shower with nice hot water, which was also the ladies room and toilet (gents toilet and wash basin are separate), washing facilities, local area info and some comfy armchairs. There were two toilet tents as well. I can imagine at peak times that you may have a long wait on your hands- we were lucky I think. Recycling bins are available, along with a fresh water tap on the back of the house.

I really wanted to cross the ford that someone had mentioned in a review so I took the car down just to tick it off and it was completely unpassable. Looking at pictures I took, I think that the stormy weather may have torn some of the central part of it up as well, since there was a patch of rough water which looked like it was flowing over broken rocks and stonework. It was indicating just over 1. 5 feet deep at the time.

Parking the car back at the site, my other half and I then walked into Warkworth, ate in the Masons Arms, had a couple of pints in the Black Bull and then walked back- its just over 2 miles each way. The food was decent, reasonably priced and served quickly- I can recommend the roast of the day stottie. There wasn't much room to sit and a lot of tables were reserved so it might be worth booking before you start your journey. We did go on the only sunny day of the August bank holiday though- the Sunday. The walk was pleasant enough to do, with some decent views to enjoy en route. We had no maps so I navigated by using the Mk1 eyeball- 'lets go this way' type thing. I don't know if the maps show it but the easiest way to get to the bridge crossing the river (down by the ford) is to go into the middle of the three caravan park entrances and walk to the back of that site to meet the bridge (it is a public footpath, you wont be trespassing). Also, after you leave the bridge and walk up into the housing estate the other side you will join a road called Watershaugh Road. When you get near the end of that road, as it bears right 90 degrees, take the footpath in the field off to your left which goes alongside the field behind the houses. This path brings you into Warkworth town centre via a route taking you right next to the castle without going on the main road (although this road obviously has a footpath should you wish to take this route). In the process it cuts a bit of a corner off your walk versus this main road route.

We got back to the campsite just before dark and sat and relaxed, enjoying a couple a drinks while the sun went down. It was very peaceful, full of the sounds of nature and sometimes the other campers. At night the owls became king and there were lots of owl calls, a lovely sound- again it was nice to sit, chat and listen. The views of the night sky were fantastic in the clear weather we had the night we stayed.

I have to say that this is a lovely little site and I will be going back. It is a bit basic and facilities are a bit limited but this didn't matter to me. The gorgeous, tranquil, location meant that we thoroughly enjoyed our short stay.

Visited the campsite for one night during the summer bank holiday.

The field is very nice sits on a river and looks great. It's a very basic campsite, a grassy field with sites in a raw on level ground near the river.

All the facilities are in one stand alone caravan, which means that there is only one toilet for each sex. Additional 2 toilet tents were added. The caravan is very far from the tents line which was problematic in the rain we had.

The owner was very friendly when we arrived, showed us around.

Restaurants etc are in Workworth; 2. 5 miles away from the site.

Basically you get what you pay for

Just returned from 2 nights at this lovely site. A beautiful field with lots of space and very friendly hosts- nothing was too much trouble!

The facilities are basic but very clean- a toilet/shower in the static caravan and lovely hot water to wash up with.

On the first night we walked into warkworth, very pleasant and about 40 minutes away.

On the second day we walked to morwick ice cream parlour. It was quite a long walk but well worth it- lots of flavours to choose from.

We will definitely return!

We have just returned from our main family holiday of the year that we chose to spend at Walkmill. In our party were two units both on electric hook-up. The site was set in beautiful rural countryside which we liked as we weren't overlooked by anyone. It was well-maintained and very clean and tidy.

Our pitch was level and had it's own black bin which was a novelty to us and this was emptied daily. There was also full re-cycling available for cans, glass and cardboard that we were pleased about.

We were greeted by Claire on our arrival and shown to our pitches. After setting up we met Nick and we were shown around the facilities. Their sons Ollie and Benji made our two boys really welcome and the added attraction of a huge trampoline was greatly enjoyed by all!

Nothing was too much trouble for Nick and Claire and the freshly-laid eggs from their hens that we sampled were greatly enjoyed by all.

During our stay we visited Amble for our grocery shopping essentials. We enjoyed browsing the Sunday market at Amble harbour and found some bargains too. We decided to join the Jubilee celebrations in Amble and througly enjoyed the delicious fish and chips at the harbourside.

Our boys absolutely loved rock-pooling and we visited several coves along the coast trying to find the local sealife! including Little Shore in Amble, Cresswell, Boulmer and Embleton where we visited Dunstanburgh castle.

We spent a day at Alnwick gardens and travelled across the causeway to The Holy Islands and brought back some Lindisfarne Mead.

A favourite place for all of us was the local ice-cream parlour in Morwick where the adults could sit back and chill whilst our two boys had great fun in the playground. Their favourite flavoured ice-cream was the blue bubblegum variety.

We asked our hosts if they could recommend a local place to eat for our last night and Claire and Nick suggested The Hermitage Inn in Warkworth. The Inn was lovely, with plenty of choice for adults and children with freshly cooked food not heated up in a microwave. It was very good value for money and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed.

We were all very sad to leave and will definitely be back soon. Thanks Nick and Claire we wish you well for the future.

Overall it is very good value for money and although we didn't actually use all the facilities supplied our fellow campers all enjoyed a happy and relaxed holiday.

We have just returned home after having a spent a week at Warkmill – I am so glad we ‘found’ this fantastic site! Our party was made up of 4 adults, 2 small children and 1 well behaved dog who really enjoyed going for a walk in the field on the lead where the ‘sheep’ were and investigating all around her. We were all able to relax and know that the children were able to enjoy their surroundings and explore/play in complete safety. The large trampoline was a hit with both small children and ‘bigger kids i. E. The adults in our party!

Nick and Claire the owners of the site were very friendly and helpful – nothing was too much trouble-the eggs from their hens were delicious! It was nice to find such a pretty site in a stunning setting, the views were fantastic and we the adults in the party were able to just kick back and chill out.

The directions were more than adequate – I must brush up on my navigational map-reading skills of O. S. Maps although that could have been sleep deprivation!

Entry to the site is easy compared to some sites we have been to and the distance the site is located away from the road and out of sight of passing vehicles means you can leave your caravan/awning with the knowledge that nothing will have been disturbed whilst you are away from site.

We had an electric hook-up and the size of the pitch was excellent – fairly level so made siting the ‘van’ easy.

Chemical empty for toilet cassettes was good and the individual black bin for each pitch which the owners emptied on a regular daily basis was also an innovation, I have not encountered this on any other site to date.

This site is in the process of evolving and we can only wish both Claire and Nick all success with the plans they want to implement. This sites charm lies in its stunning location, privacy yet easy access to fantastic family attractions – beaches, castles country houses, museums etc.

We all enjoyed going into Warkworth and surrounding countryside via the ‘ford’ - the children were really impressed.

We didn’t let the rain/wind deter us, managing to explore quite a bit of Northumberland including Lindisfarne, /Seahouses/Bamburgh Castle/Amble – watching Jubilee celebrations and eating the best fish and chips at the quayside chippy – handy for the Sunday Market! We also visited Rothbury and Otterburn, Alnwick and many more places too numerous to mention.

We can highly recommend The Hermitage Pub in Warkworth – we all enjoyed a meal there on our last night (pre-book as very popular) and the staff were friendly and professional – again nothing too much trouble – will definitely make a repeat booking next time we are up.

We are already trying to juggle dates so as to make a repeat visit this year!

We just arrived home from a fantastic first visit to this site. When we arrived we were greeted by Nick, one half of the couple who own the site. He was very friendly and welcoming and personally walked us round to our pitch, which he recommended for us. We met Claire later and she was lovely too, as were their children who were very welcoming to our own kids and soon had them off exploring the furthest reaches of the site.

The views from the site are very pretty and we were treated to a fantastic sunset from the vantage point we had.

Facilities on this site are limited - the warden's static van becomes the toilet block for eg - but planning permission has been applied for to improve the facilities. Essentially, it has water, electric hook-up and a chemical toilet disposal facility as well as a huge trampoline for the kids to use.

There is also discretionary access via the owners' land to the riverbank where our kids were able to fish for tiddlers with a net.

This will never be a luxury site, however, and nor should it be. Its charm is in its setting, which is truly stunning, and its ambience, which is calm and welcoming.

We have been waiting for years for a decent touring site close to Warkworth, which is a fantastic little town on the Northumberland coast, and we are very pleased to have found one which has already become a family favourite.

Warkworth is only 1. 5 miles from the site so easily walkable but for a bit of adventure you can always take the car over the ford. Finding the site is not easy and a couple of signposts may be useful in time.

Also the gravelled slope on the road off the site is interesting, but these are minor quibbles compared to the many positives this site provides.

Claire and Nick have interesting plans for this site which they have only just begun to implement and we cannot wait to come back and see how it has changed.

What a find! We rang up on the off chance as this website said site open April onwards and we were in luck. We had the site to ourselves and what a position.

Thanks to Nick and Claire and their 2 boys who made us very welcome. Claire kindly loaned us an electric cable as ours wasn't long enough for the hook up. Our kids (age 7 & 5) also loved Joe and his girls who gave us information on the local area as well as the chickens which my daughter wanted to take home.

This site is brilliant as quiet, peaceful and in a lovely setting. Who says kids need play parks and entertainment - they spent ages at the river throwing stones in and trying not to get their feet wet - this site is now very much at the top of our kids favourite campsites list.

Site is on the river and lovely short walk around the site. Short drive to Walkworth. Fantastic Ice cream in the dairyfarm just outside of Warkworth. Lovely day out in Bamburgh which is worth a trip into the castle. Best beach around with brilliant sand dunes for the kids to climb and play in.

There are no showers/toilet blocks but no problem in a caravan but there is electric hook up. Worth sacrificing these for the site.

I can completely understand other reviewers not wanting people to find out about the site but we would not hesitate to recommend it and we will be back - no doubt about that.

Beautiful campsite in an amazing location however really, it's only for fully equipped caravans, despite the site saying tents too, because the only toilet / wash facilities are in a static caravan, which someone else was staying in.

The site is approx 40 minutes walk from Warkworth which has good selection of pubs, attractions and of course the Castle.

The site is surrounded by a river, offering a peaceful, tranquil environment.

Staff were all very friendly and accommodating but the toilet situation was the only negative.

Just returned from our 5th weekend break at Walkmill (1st this year ) I've been a little slow in leaving a review as we'd like to keep the place all to ourselves but maybe that's just being downright selfish. We're sort of new to caravanning having bought our 1st little 2 birth ( no shower or hot water ) van back in June last year. Finding this beautiful site definitely made us think if this is caravanning we want to be away every weekend so much so we took the plunge into buying a bigger van with a few mod cons in the hope we could visit Walkmill as often as we could.

Set in the most tranquil spot you could imagine surrounded on three sides by the river Coquet it is a must for anyone wishing peace & quiet not to mention the wildlife. My other half originally from the area goes on & on about about what he calls god's country, telling me how when god made the earth Northumberland was the last place created which is when he knew he had it right. ( I think I have to agree ). Walkworth, Amble, Alnwick, Bamburgh, Alnmouth, Dunstanborough, Seahouses, Craster, (fantastic crab soup at the Jolly Fisherman pub & kippers from the Smokey opposite ) Cragside, Rothbury, in fact the whole area is stunning but a must are the Farnes & Holy Island. ( check the tide table ) Sunday there is a great market in Amble on the harbor with more bargains then you can shake a stick at & a van that does a real stotty bacon sandwich.

Nick & Claire a lovely couple who have offered us a warm welcome on every visit, the 5 touring pitches are large & spacious on perfectly level ground although was quite spongy back at the end of October after heavy rain ( but what can you expect ) On that occasion Nick did offer us hard standing but it wasn't that soggy so opted for the views from the field ( did leave a few tyre tracks leaving though, sorry Nick )

This little site is absolutely spotless other then maybe standing in some rabbit or deer poo on your walk around the river. Nick keeps the grass well cut & even cuts a track down to & around the river which is a lovely short walk on a summer evening. I saw my first Kingfisher & found Otter tracks not far from the stone barbecue where you can enjoy burning your sausages as you watch the river meander by. We have also seen Owls, (one sitting on a tree above our van) watched a Heron who seemed oblivious to us sitting on the river bank fishing for his supper, lots of buzzards high in the sky putting on fantastic ariel displays, ( take your binoculars it's free)

My best experience ever was this weekend, ( January 2012 ) 9 am sitting having my morning coffee, the ground twinkling with a hard haw frost & the sun just rising over the tree tops making the whole scene look like a Christmas card, two deer came out of the trees not 20 yards from our van crossing the track onto the frost covered field before bouncing off up the hill. ( a fantastic start to any day) We will be returning time & time again I hope.

What a gem. We found Walkmill by accident in 2009 and have been back twice since then. This very quiet and secluded site is accessed a few hundred yards off a country road and surrounds the owners beautifully restored old farmhouse. The handful of pitches are all on grass, level and well spaced with stunning views over the river below. There are electric hook ups available and a place to empty toilet cassettes. The owners and their young family are very welcoming hosts and will happily impart their local knowledge if asked.

This is a stunning part of the country with easy access to so many fantastic family attractions -local pool, beaches, castles and country houses. Our children especially enjoyed Wet'n'Wild in Newcastle.

We did our main shopping in Alnwick's supermarket but there are plenty of other shops within a 10 minute drive of the site or less if you want to brave the ford into Walkworth.

Placed halfway between Berwick and Newcastle we found this an ideal place to begin to explore the diversity of Northumberland.

See if you can check out the areas near to the site on google earth.

As always do your homework prepare well and plan your visit and like our family you will keep going back.
