We chose this site as it's just half an hours drive from the ferry from Harris. The owners are lovely people and make you feel very welcome.
It is on a working farm with Highland cattle, the site itself is fenced off, but the cattle do sometimes graze on the grass near the beach.
The pitches are mostly gravelled and flat, divided by narrow strips of grass, there are also grass pitches. There are motorhome fill and dump facilities and chemical disposal point.
The toilets and showers are modern and spotless, but for the size of the site 2 showers & 2 toilets for each sex would mean queues at busy times. There is a good laundry room and a kitchen.
There is no sea view from the site itself, to be honest it's quite bleak and exposed, but it's only a very short walk over the grass to the most beautiful white sand bay, and the nature reserve is next door, so if you get good weather it would be perfect.
It is quite isolated, so would recommend stocking up before you arrive if you don't want to drive once pitched up.

One year on from our first visit, this campsite is still a gem. The showers/toilets still immaculate, together with the wash-up area, with the added bonus of a tumble dryer this year. Free range eggs are still sold, be quick there is a high demand. Anne, the owner is a wealth of information, and very helpful in times of need. The site is on the machair so only a quick hop over the dunes to an exquisite beach, where you can start a walk around the headland. Shops at Bayhead and Sollas cater for your food needs and eating out has now got nearer with the opening of the Westford Inn (great food-book) or treat yourself at Langass Lodge. Most of the people staying have an interest in the wildlife, so if you want to see hen harriers from your porch, listen to corncrakes or feed your crumbs to the curlews, come here.

Lovely location, if you ignore the graveyard! This site is very nice, it is right next to the beach and is in the nature reserve. This does have its downsides though, as the corncrake do make a racquet during the night and the sand flies were just a tad annoying! At least they weren't midges though!
Midges stay away due to the sea breeze. The sunsets are amazing if you walk up to the dunes and look over the beach. Although it is next to the beach, you can't actually see the sea from the pitch.
The facilities are great and very clean, however for the size of site, 2 toilets and 2 showers each, just isn't enough.
There is a catering van on site which is good. Also a washing machine and tumble dryer and plenty or washing line too. The site is nice, if you don't mind graveyards, and to be honest, we got used to it and most of the time another caravan blocked our direct sight of it. You also get used to the corncrakes and the flies and the beach is lovely.
North Uist is an excellent location and there are lots of nature walks and boat trips you can do as well as visit the beautiful beaches.
There are shops nearby and petrol stations and cafes. You are limited as there aren't many campsites on the Uists, but there are some wild camping spots too. If it's the beach and sunsets you are after then this is the campsite for you.
We probably won't go back to this site though, as there are others we prefer.

On a bleak day this site may not look inspiring - pretty much a car park with some grass pitches and a wire fence! Trees and shrubs are a rare thing in the Outer Hebs. However, you're not here for the beauty of the site but its location in the RSPB reserve and fantastic beaches on the doorstep. Friendly and helpful manager/owner. Clean facilities but we mainly used our own. The only pub in North Uist (The Westport) is a short drive away and has decent food. The snack & cake van on site is open for a few hours every day and the 'Bayhead' shop is a few miles drive for supplies. Balranald makes a great base for exploring North Uist. It seems popular so book ahead.

WE stayed for just one night and although this site was not our first choice, we were very happy with it.
The woman who welcomed us was very pleasant and helpful and the facilities were clean and well maintained.
We had a lovely walk through the bird sanctuary, though really do need to take a book of birds and wild flowers with us next time.
Only criticism it that it is not the most scenic of sites, but then you don't need too travel far to get some wonderful views.

Another beautiful site in the Western Isles the plus being that it was in a RSPB nature reserve. Lovely walks from the site to catch sight of the birds and other animals. Toilet facilities were very clean and well kept

Quite the best site in the Western Isles.
All the normal facilities available and impeccably clean as well.
A previous reviewer criticised the cost of the shower at £1 because with children it could cost a lot, I think this is unfair as the site is not specifically advertised as a family site, the showers and toilets were very clean and well designed.
There is a wildcamping site at Hosta a couple of miles away, Balranald itself is 50m from a beautiful sandy beach.
The best feature of this site is the little cafe open from 11-3pm, serving great sandwiches and cakes.
Hard to beat.

Had a wonderful stay at this site. Site had all the facilities needed to make for a very enjoyable stay. The site is well kept and tidy. Toilets and showers are spotlessly clean. Owner made us feel very welcome upon arrival. Catering caravan is a must, beautiful freshly made cakes, daily. We will be back

Others have said it and I would agree, this is a gem of a site. Fabulous position on the RSPB nature reserve and a beautiful clean and modern site. We didn't have the best of weather when we were there but that didn't matter. The showers were hot and plenty long enough for the £1 charge. The site is new and very well maintained. The little food wagon has lovely cakes and was well used by walkers and site attendees alike. The beautiful beach is just a few steps away from the site and the walk around the headland is sensational. St Kilda is visible on the walk. The site is also in a great position for touring North Uist. It's also extremely good value (£18 per night). I would definitely return and the lady who runs it is lovely.

What a fantastic site! Small enough to be friendly, lovely clean and bright facilities, long showers in good sized cubicles (well worth the pound charge), fresh eggs for sale on site, warm indoor area with dishwashing sinks, books, leaflets, information board and a really big washing machine to cope with all the accumulated laundry - pity there was no tumble drier but, to be honest, the sprightly breeze up there dried our washing on the (provided) lines in next to no time! There is also a food van on site open for part of the day. The location is the type you dream of but think you will never find. Pop the dog on the lead and step through the gate - there are walks and beaches in abundance. The tour of the reserve not only offers a great variety of birds (including the elusive corncrake), but also sea views and rather splendid waves. Please do obey the request to keep the dog under control on the reserve; we were quite distressed to see a loose spaniel chasing the rare birds during our stay, and would suggest you give this one a miss if your dog is a Houdini. A truly lovely site and one which we will return to.
